I loved the constume, the action, the sets....it was all done very well, and you could tell it was pretty high budget. But they covered so many of the things that happened in the book that it felt packed and too short, despite it's 2.25 hour length!! And there was little to no character or relationship development! I wasn't crying when Rue died! I should have been. It's like.....if Twilight was waaayyy too much romantic looks and too little story plot, the Hunger games was too much action, not enough relationship. I enjoyed it A LOT. I just wanted to pause the movie and look at all of the capitol's costumes!! But it lacked all of the emotional plot of the book, and they didn't even thouch on (what I consider to be) the most important relationship of the trilogy, Haymitch and Katniss!!

I loved it. I think as far as fitting everything important in and sticking to the book, they did wonderful. There were somethings I was disappointed about but those are things that I don't think could have been helped. Like, the fights were disappointing. I think they lacked intensity and, well for lack of a better word, gruesomeness. Like, it was almost too soft, it didn't make me feel the way it did when I was reading the book. That thought of 'Oh my gosh, these are kids doing this to each other.' But there's only so much you can do with PG-13 rating. I think if they had truly stuck to producing everything the way the book did, it would be rated R. (Which is often why I find myself thinking it's quite shocking that this considered a young adult book) For a while I was also disappointed with the relationships. Mostly, the relationship between Peeta. I think they portrayed the friendship between Cinna, the sacrificial love for Prim, and the distant relationship with her mother all very well. Actually, they did well with portraying her relationships with all the characters. At first I thought the Peeta/Katniss relationship lacked something but then I remembered that this isn't the book, we aren't reading Katniss's inner most thoughts, but rather watching how she is and, from what I had gathered from the book, her actions do not always reflect her thoughts. So I dropped my unsettled feeling about that relationship and realized Jennifer Lawrence did wonderful with that! I've seen a lot of people complain about it though and it's kind of frustrating because this is not a love story. The relationships built in the books are important yes, but this isn't Twilight. As far as the actual themes go: the exaggerated take on the grotesque part of our modern day society (the shallowness, the materialism, ect) the savageness of humans, opression, severe poverty, effects of war, government control. I think those all were portrayed in such an exceptional manner.
The only thing that really bothered me was the lack of music through most of the movie.
I also really LOVED the cast. I couldn't picture anyone better for most of the roles. I especially loved Woody Harrelson as Haymitch and I am now in love Josh Hutcherson.
