Finally, the sun had set; it had taken its sweet time to cross the sky and dip under the horizon. There would be a day when Valentino had his revenge on that ball of light, but it would require far more concentration than Valentino had to spare, there were too many shiny things to distract him in the night's sky. While waiting Valentino had been pacing around for what had seemed like hours; sally reminded him that it had only been fifteen minutes. Valentino didn't care as time dragged on for eternity, Valentino had a hot date with a cold corpse.
Valentino was running low on parts in is lab, his lab's last left arm had been lost to the hungry mouths of the local rats, they were unionizing and demanding more and more from Valentino. Valentino was going to have to ether feed them or bring in the cats.
Sighing, Valentino rummaged through his bag until his found what he was a looking for. It was a small shovel, slightly rusted and the handle cracked, it was no different than the hundreds found at dubious gardening stores. This one was special however, " hello Sally " Valentino loving whispered to the shovel.
Before she could reply, Valentino stuffed Sally into his coat pocket. Her muffled protests were sweet sweet music to Valentino's ears. Diving into a pile of dirty clothes and unmentionable lab equipment, Valentino whistled a little tune to himself. Suddenly the tune stopped and from out of the pile, Valentino's hand emerged with a dark student sized bag.
The bag and shovel ready, Valentino opened the door of his lab and walked quickly outside. Taking a look around, he didn't see anybody. Breathing a sigh of relief, Valentino took sally out of his pocket and shushed her.
" tonight we dig " Valentino bit his lower lip in anticipation. He couldn't wait for tonight's event. The soft dirt would at first resist his protruding shovel, but it would be no match for him. Slowly the soil would break, and allow for him to discover the secrets beneath.
Turning, Valentino began to stroll towards the local graveyard. Tonight nobody as going to stop him. Tonight Valentino had a date six feet under.

Try as she might to focus on something else, Xiu found her mind wandering back to the last few days--more specifically, the Hunters--no matter what she did. The matter of the Hunters troubled her: whereas they had once seemed like a group who preferred to do things in the shadows, it was clear that they were no longer as shy as they once were. They had even had the gall to show up at the Trials, and from what she had heard, it had not just been her group that had fallen victim to them either.
Needless to say, the baku was far more wary than usual. She was not the only one either--a number of students seemed to be more nervous than usual. Some would skitter into the (supposed) safety of their dorms the moment it got dark, while others chose to travel about in a large group. After all, safety in numbers, right?
It was because of this that Xiu had been so thrown off-guard when she chose to look out of her window late that evening. The campus grounds seemed to be empty, the students having all retired to their rooms for the night...except one? At first, she had been doubtful, squinting at the figure that was making its way off the school grounds. And then, when she was certain that she was not seeing things, a sense of alarm overtook her. What are they doing? Don't they know how dangerous it is to--!
There was little hesitation in her actions as she whirled around, letting the curtain drop back into place as she hastily threw a jacket on over her pajamas, slipped on some shoes, and went rushing out of the demon dorms. The figure seemed as if they had been headed towards the graveyard, a place that Xiu had only been to once before. The place filled her with unpleasant memories, but it could not be helped. Hopefully she would be able to catch up with them before they got too far.
And so, being the hypocrite that she was, the ghoul wandered off of the campus alone to follow after the other student.

Such darkness, it was enveloping Valentino, soothing caressing him and sending shivers down his spine. The cooling sky was as still as the school at night. Ever since Valentino had emerged from his lab, he had noticed that once night fell, students left for the safety of their dorms. All the better for him to sneak around. Taking the path towards the graveyard, Valentino couldn't wait to start digging, there was a smorgasbord of new parts waiting for him.
As he walked, in the back of his throat there was a stirring, a desire that Valentino had always denied; but all alone, with no boil or ghoul nearby, there was no denying the impulse this time.
With a hop, skip, and a jump, an old rhyme left his lips "One arm, two arms, three arms, four; five arms, six arms, seven arms more!"
Sally was groaning at the sheer indignity of being around this skipping boil, she preferred to be shoved under the dirt than have to listen to Valentino sing about body parts.

Her footsteps were quick and light as she made her way down the path, her tapir-shaped ears pricking upwards slightly as she listened for the student. How far ahead were they? Would she be able to catch up? Her greatest concern was the possibility of an ambush attack from the Hunters, and judging by their latest actions, that wasn't an unlikely possibility.
The thought of another student being turned into a weapon sent a shiver up her spine. She picked up her pace.
Soon enough, the sound of...something reached her ears. A song? No--a rhyme? It didn't matter--rather than waste time dwelling on what it was, she was just thankful that she now had a clear way to track down the student. She let the voice guide her forward, and then--ah ha!
"Pardon me," She called out, hoping that he would stop or at least slow down as she made her way up to him. Her brows were knit together as she cast a wary look towards their surroundings, "I apologize for my sudden intrusion, but...you shouldn't be out here alone right now. It's dangerous." She pulled her coat tighter around her as she spoke, and while the silence of the night usually made her feel at peace, it only unnerved her now. Her gaze flickered back towards the boil, and she gestured towards the direction of the school.
"I'm...not sure what business you have at the graveyard, but could it wait until daybreak?"

At the sound of an unfamiliar voice, Valentino's legs froze in their place causing him to stop in pace. A cold sweat began to form on him and his eyes snapped wide open. Valentino had been caught in a most compromising position, singing. Maybe if Jack was merciful, Valentino would be struck down quickly by a falling tree, or a meteor would come crashing down, ending this unfortunate situation. After waiting for some sort of rescue from this embarrassment, Valentino soon realized that only he could rescue himself from this terrible predicament. Turning around slowly, Valentino's mouth was showing a frozen grin. His dilated pupils focused for a moment on the ghoul in-front of him, she seemed just as scared as he was. " Daybreak? You want me to sneak around at day break?" Valentino's whispered loudly out this interloping ghoul. " You can't sneak around when the sun is out!" Valentino began to wave his hands in the air at the absurdity of the suggestion that he even be out during the day. " Tell me, how could a boil like me dig in peace with all the student body able to see me?" Valentino stated as matter a-factually as he could. This ghoul obviously had other motives for being out at night. Then a thought came to Valentino, a dark thought, one full of suspicion and jealousy. Was this ghoul trying to scare him into leaving, just so she could have the graveyard tonight? Valentino pulled sally out from his front pocket, she was not pleased that he had been found, but she wasn't surprised at his inability to deal with the situation. Pointing Sally in the ghoul's general direction. He slowly growled. " If it's so dangerous as you say it is, why are you out here alone as well?"

All of Xiu's bravery went out of the window when she realized that the boil was about to turn around. The thought that hit her--the realization of how stupid she had been to come out after this boil alone--caused her to stiffen up. How could she have forgotten? The Hunters usually had disguises when they showed up here! For all she knew, she had been following Hunter bait and had just walked straight into a trap.
The thought made her take a nervous step back, her hands clutched to her chest. Even as the boil answered her, she found herself paying little mind to his actual words, her attention focused solely on taking in his appearance. He...he doesn't look like he's one of those fake bodies that the Hunters occupy. I mean, there are no cracks, and he doesn't--!
The growl caused her to flinch in shock, successfully snapping her out of her thoughts. Her pink-red eyes widened as she drew back even further, taking a moment to process his question before she managed to get out an answer. "I...I saw you leaving the campus from my window," She spoke quickly and quietly, her gaze focused on the shovel that was pointed towards her, "And I became worried. If a Hunter found you out here alone..." Though as it was, even with two of them out here, they were still easy prey for any lurking Hunters. While Xiu didn't know how the boil was at fighting, she knew for a fact that she could only hold off one or two Hunters. Any more than that, and...
"Let's go back. Please." Her request was accompanied by another nervous, darting glance at their surroundings.

This Ghoul was scared and her fear exhilarated Valentino. oh how he enjoyed it when others dropped their pretenses and showed their true selves. The only sad part was that she wasn't scared of him. Something outside in this darkness was what scared her. Could he still use that to his advantage? Yes. Valentino put his arm around the ghoul, Val could feel the fear shivering off of her. How he wished it was because of him. Taking in a quick breathe Valentino did something that Sally would later categorize as class-A stupid. " It's too late to go back now little ghoul." Valentino giggled as he envisioned the ghoul running off in terror.

Why was he moving closer? Why was his arm sliding around her shoulders? The baku visibly tensed up, murmuring soft, awkward apologies and excuses as she immediately tried to detach herself from the boil. "Erm. Y-yes, I, well...why don't we talk back at the school? It's much warmer, and brighter and--"
--and what did he just say?
A few months ago, Xiu would have thrown off the boil's arm and bolted towards the school in a panic. However, that was then, and this was now--if there was one thing that she had learned about the Hunters' false bodies, it was that they were easily breakable with the right amount of force. Without any hesitation, the petite ghoul shrugged off the boil's arm, whirled around and--in the same movement--swung her fist right into his face.
...
It only took her a few seconds to process the fact that he felt nothing like what the Hunters' false bodies were supposed to feel like.

What are dreams? Since the dawn of memory and sleep, boils and ghouls have experienced these nighttime phenomenon. The great jack himself dreamed. From the lowliest undead to the most haughty demon, there were dreams that equalized them. Some dreamed of riches, some dreamed of love, and some dreamed of flying. Those who dreamed of flying would be quite jealous of Valentino at this exact moment. Having left most of his organs at the lab, it turned out that Valentino's weight was optimized for flight. Sally could only marvel at Valentino's hang time, was at least in the top ten if not the new record for boil flight. Valentino's landing, to be generous, was not graceful. Having once been buried under the ground, it was not as welcoming the second time. Valentino landed like a sack of pumpkins that twitched. " that's it?" Valentino groggily mumbled to the ground, he had at least expected a broken bone or two. His teeth weren't even loose. At was at this time that the darkness known as unconsciousness started to take hold. " little ghouls hit harder than this" he said half consciously.

Xiu's eyes were wide in horror, but for a completely different reason from before. No longer was her mind focused on the possibility of Hunters lurking around these parts. No, instead, she was completely distracted by the fact that she had just punched another student in the face.
A student. Not a Hunter in disguise, as she had thought. The fact that the zombie had not crumbled like the fake Hunter bodies was proof of that fact.
She was frozen in place, her hands cupped over her mouth as she gaped at the boil on the ground. There was a long pause, and then she immediately stumbled over, falling to a crouch beside him. "Oh Jack, I--! I'm sorry! You just...I thought you were a Hunter, and...can you stand?"
Xiu reached out, trying to grab his arm and haul him to his feet as gently as she could. "I'm so terribly, terribly sorry. We...we really must get out of here, though. What do you say we head to the demon dorms? I'll, um, treat you to some tea?" She extended the offer meekly, her face burning from embarrassment and from guilt. If he agreed to her offer, she just prayed to Jack that he wouldn't lose consciousness before they made it back. While she had just proven that she had a decent arm for punches, the Xiu doubted her ability to carry a boil all the way back to school by herself.

" mmrrppphhhtt, let go I'm trying to sleep" Valentino hazilly mumbled to the ghoul who was trying to lift him up by his arm. That warm darkness was finally embracing him, telling him that sleep was here to stay. The tugging on his arm was only thing that kept him awake. The ghoul's didn't know her own strength, or Valentino wasn't going to admit that his connective tissues were sort of weak. The end result was the same, with a hollow popping sounds, ghoul, instead of helping Val up, was now carrying Valentino's newly severed arm. The rip was clean, and barely any embalming fluid leaked out. Valentino's jacket was ruined however and so was his shirt. The tugging sensation in his arm finally gone, Valentino was able to concentrate on how much simpler it was to close his eyes and go to sleep than it was to deal with this ghoul. Letting the now comforting ground embrace him, Valentino closed his eyes and let the sweet darkness overwhelm him.

"I...I'll let you go as soon as we get back to the school, I promise." Or rather, if they made it back to the school. Xiu was having some trouble trying to haul the boil to his feet--clearly her punch had done more damage than she ever could have anticipated--but she refused to even consider the option of simply leaving him here. That would be far too dangerous, and Jack knows that she wouldn't be able to live with the guilt if something happened.
So, she continued with her efforts, attempting to drag him up. Just...a little more--
And suddenly Xiu was holding an arm--an arm that wasn't connected to a body--in her hand. The limb received a blank stare, and then the baku felt a sense of panic well up inside of her at the realization that she had just torn off the undead boil's arm. Not that he seemed to mind much, but that was likely due to the fact that he seemed to want nothing but to sleep.
Which was...also her fault.
She told herself not to panic. After all, she had her fair share of undead friends, and this happened to them all the time, so surely it wasn't that big of a deal (hopefully). Mouth setting into a thin line, Xiu tucked the boil's arm under her own, reached down, and grabbed the collar of his jacket. Ensuring that there weren't any branches or rocks on the path, she used both hands and started dragging him back into the direction of Amityville. "I'm so sorry, but really, we can't stay here for long in case a Hunter is lurking around these parts."
