He awoke with no pain.

It was a good sign, Ren decided, as he blinked blearily, his gaze slightly fuzzy. For a few moments he just lay there without moving, his arms feeling too heavy to try and move. After a while his vision started to clear, moving away from the sleep smeared haze and he could make out the familiar lines of his dorm room, the red walls and the soft snuffling of little creatures on the floor.

Something wriggled beside him. Ren blinked again and then twisted his head, catching sight of something red and gold nestled against his side - Trickster was sound asleep, his nose pressed into Ren's arm, the scarf around his neck trailing off onto the floor.

Ren smiled. His eyes traveled towards his desk, where an unfamiliar sheet of impressive looking parchment paper lay neatly on the edge, a heavy, elaborate scrawl visible from his position. Curious, Ren reached out, his fingers touching the edge of the paper as he pulled it towards him and smoothed it out.

EXAM AUTHENTICATION APPROVAL.

He stared at it.

Exam Authentication Approval. Does this mean...?

Ren pushed himself up, sliding his legs over the side of the bed. Trickster gave a small whine in protest, but Ren had already reached to pick him up, nestling the little fracs against his shoulder as he set the paper back down on his desk.

The dream. It was the final trial, wasn't it?

The trial of Death.

It was disheartening. Ren closed his eyes briefly, inhaling slowly. Then he slipped from his bed and made his way across the room and out the door.

Jove's room was easy to find - after all, Ren went there at least several times a week, just to check in on his little brother. He supposed that one day the whole "doting older brother" stuff would have to slow down and he'd have to face the reality of Jove growing up and not needing him, but for now he was going to enjoy it while it lasted.

He didn't bother to knock, instead stepping inside of the dark room quietly, Trick still cradled in his arms. An all-too-familiar lump under the blankets made Ren move towards the bed, looking down at the sleeping face of his little brother. Relief coursed through Ren, almost as tangible as something solid, and silently sat down, laying down beside the boil atop the covers. He curled up on his side and closed his eyes, Trick nosing against his abdomen, and folded his wings down against his shoulders.

He's still alive. Just like LW. Thank Jack.

Fear, anger, maybe even a bit of insanity, that had been what Jove had died with. He had been killed by hunters, wiped out just the same as LW had, and surely hundreds of Halloweeners before them. But he had gone with blood on his fangs.

So when he began to wake up from his dreamless sleep, his first instinct was to fight against the weight that was keeping him trapped. He struggled against the blankets, thrashing violently until he freed one arm from it's blanketed bounds. He had to get his foe off of him, get loose so he could once again get his teeth on those hated hunters!

Closing his hand into a fist, he punched at his assailant with all his might.

It was starting to sink in, the softness under him, the familiar scent of mushrooms and foxfires, but his room was still rather dark, and cavelike. Just the same as where he had been killed. And the pup was too far into his rage to realize this was his bed, his home, and his brother whom he had just punched in the nose.

Something was wrong.

Even as Ren was starting to drift off into sleep again, he could feel Jove's restlessness, the way he twisted about in his sleep, kicking his legs and flailing his arms. Trickster made a soft mewling sound and leapt from the bed, looking startled, and Ren pushed himself upwards, grappling with the blankets to get them away from Jove.

Smack.

A fist - Jove's fist - collided with Ren's face, smack dab into his nose. He reeled backwards, completely taken aback, but one look at Jove's face and he knew it hadn't been on purpose. Eyes watering, Ren reached up a hand, fingers brushing over the bridge of his nose.

Something's wrong.

Ren's hands shot out, fingers closing around his little brother's wrists tightly, though without trying to cause him physical harm.

"JOVE," said Ren, in a very strong, fiercely determined voice. "Stop."

He didn't like this side of his little brother - this crazed panic, with wild eyes and flailing. Ren did not know what had happened to Jove in the dream, other than what he had surmised from the fact that he hadn't shown up, and LW's agonized howl that still haunted him.

"Stop," he said again, and tightened his grip just a little. "Jove. It's me. It's Ren. I'm not a hunter, you're not being captured. We're back at Amityville and you're just fine."

Jove let out a growl as he was pinned down thoroughly, but Ren's voice quickly seeped into his consciousness. No, he had to stop. The growl died in his throat, and he relaxed slowly, as though he was fighting every step of it. There was just so much anger, it ached and burned inside of him without any way to vent it.

The pup let out a little whine, clarity seeping back in his eyes as he looked up at his brother. And the ugly red on his face. Oh, he had been a Bad Dog again... But how had they ended up back here? How did here even exist anymore? Was it part of the trials? It felt so vivid, so real...

As though sensing the change in their owner's mental state, several foxfires came out of hiding and hopped up onto the bed, clustering protectively around the little ghost. They tried to comfort as best they could, pressing against him in a fluffy, writhing hug.

One poor, confused creature pressed itself against the tuft of fluff on Ren's tail, with just as much determination as the others.

He had a feeling he knew why Jove was lashing out, though the specifics as to exactly why were hazy, vague, and uncertain. Ren had not been there at the end, he had not seen what had happened after he and Tybalt had somehow gotten free, lost in the fog.

But he recognized that ferocity - the half crazed panic. Ren's fingers tightened again around Jove's wrist, nearly to the bruising point, but he would not go that far - not if he didn't have to.

Jove, however, was already beginning to calm down, a small whine escaping. Ren leaned his head back against the pillows and closed his eyes briefly, exhaling slowly before he looked back at his little brother.

His nose was still smarting.

There was a soft rustling noise as a few of Jove's foxfires clambered their way up onto the bed, giving small mewling noises, snuffling up to their owner - well, most of them, Ren noted, eyeing the one foxfire that was snuggling his tail, not Jove. Ren wrapped it around the little creature and lifted it, setting it down on his stomach and rubbed his nose into its little, cold one.

"Are you all right?" he asked Jove quietly, gaze flickering back to his little brother, still holding his wrists.

Jove growled a little, eyeing the room around him before taking a deep breath, and nodding. He was okay... Not happy, but unharmed at the very least.

One errant little foxfire crawled over his head, and he flicked his ears back. How did he get here after the trials? Had he... actually died? Then a panicked thought struck him, was LW okay?

The pup began struggling anew, whining and making half-hearted pleading growls as he tried to push himself out of bed. With Ren holding his wrists, he got as far as overtop the gryphon's body, and then fell face-first into the sheets. That was when the foxfires swarmed again, this time crawling on both him and Ren with little regard for tender areas and breathing ability.

Once Jove had nodded, Ren relaxed his grip a little.

Except apparently not enough, since the boil was struggling, got tangled in the sheets, and came crashing back down, half flopped across Ren, who gave a small oomph. This was followed by a series of small grunts as the rest of Jove's foxfires came bouncing over, and Ren suddenly found quite a bit of fur in his face.

"Ouch!"

Slightly exasperated, Ren attempted to sweep them away - but was unsuccessful, and the sudden movement only managed to catch him off balance. With a slight yelp and a flap of his wings, Ren fell off the side of the bed, dragging Jove, several foxfires, and half of the blankets with him in the process in one big, tangled mess.

"...okay, that hurt."

Jove let out a nearly comical wheeze in reply. He had landed under the gryphon, too tangled up to even make an escape to the dark under-the-bed space nearby. Instead, more little blinky eyes peered out, the foxfires who hadn't been entirely convinced to come out while there was such a commotion going on. The ones who hadn't been pulled over the edge simply blinked down at them.

The little wisp struggled a bit, but Ren was simply too heavy, and the tangle of sheets was taking away his leverage. His ruined side would probably bruise up worse after this tumble too... He writhed a bit more, with no success.

With a cough, Ren rolled off of Jove, his legs still stuck in the sheet. He had the feeling he'd somewhat smushed Jove, so he reached out a hand, pulling the blankets away from his pale, freckled face.

"...you okay?" he asked quietly, the faintest hint of a smile on his lips, and it was obvious he wasn't just talking about accidentally squashing his little brother. Ren's fingers brushed against Jove's cheek, moving some of his stray, mussed hair away from his face so that he could see his glowing eyes.

The vague smile shifted into a more serious expression, Ren letting his hand drop and he sighed, closing his eyes again.

"...I'm sorry I left you behind."

Once Ren's weight was off of him, Jove tentatively explored his bruised side with his fingers. Thankfully it was only more tender than normal. Was that from being landed on, or from the trials? Everything was so confusing, he couldn't quite separate reality from those... dreams.

He looked up at Ren with a confused expression. Was he okay? Were all of them okay? Him and LW and Tybalt, was everyone still here and whole?

The pup's expression twisted into a scowl, and he wanted to punch his brother all over again. What sort of apology is that? Apologizing for getting out of there, so Jove didn't have to watch both his brother and LW die? He pushed himself up to a sitting position against the bed, smacked Ren in the shoulder, and then wrapped his arms around him in a hug. Translation: You're being stupid, but I'll love you anyway.

Ren had to stop beating himself up for these things.

"They're all fine," said Ren, catching sight of Jove's face, the worried expression in his eyes. "I talked to them. Everyone's fine. It was just a dream - just another trial."

But it felt real, thought Ren, and sighed, pushing himself up so that he was sitting, leaning back against the bed with one leg up and his arm resting across his knee. He pushed his hair - newly short, but still as curly as ever - away from his face and frowned a little, seeing Jove's scowl.

"Wha - ow!" he squawked, Jove's hand smacking across his arm. "What did you do that f..."

Ren trailed off, his expression softening. Jove had pushed forward to give him a hug, though the scowl on his face was still there. Relaxing a little, Ren wrapped his arms around his little brother, his face in Jove's hair.

"I know, I know," he said, and gave a small, rueful laugh, leaning back and pecking Jove on the forehead. "I'll stop blaming myself for everything - one day. But really, I'm glad you're okay."

Jove snorted at Ren's words, but it was clear he was relieved. The anger still burned inside him, over the pains they had been put through. It flared up when he thought about it, how they had been pitted against the hunters time and time again, always struggling, always losing. The thought of being driven to such extremes by those monsters in their white coats...

That was when Jove noticed a sheet of parchment sitting on the floor, where it had fluttered off his nightstand during their flailing. It didn't belong to the pup. The hair on the back of his neck bristled, and he began growling low and threatening. That paper hadn't been there before the trials, it was a foreign object in his designated safe place, and served as a bold declaration that things were not right.

Jove's foxfires, sensing the swift change in his mood, all crammed themselves under his bed. All except Fruitloup, who puffed up right alongside it's owner and began to growl at the small coffee table across the room.

Ren gave another sigh (they were really becoming quite prominent in his everyday vocabulary), and reached out, idly tugging at some of Jove's hair.

"We'll be okay," he said, and for the first time, in a very long time, he meant it. Ren had not enjoyed the last trial, not in the slightest bit, but he could not help but feel almost as though it had been some sort of turning point. Hearing the agonized howl from LW had made his heart break into a thousand pieces, and Ren could still hear it, deep within his dreams. But he also could not admit that it was not as bad as it could have been.

It was not as bad as the island, or the time when he had been trapped within the cages. But maybe that was because he had not witnessed LW and Jove's "deaths" - he had not seen what had happened to them, though he utterly loathed the idea of either of them in pain. And his heart still ached at the thought.

Lost in his thoughts, Ren almost missed Jove's sudden growling, but after a few seconds he realized his little brother's attention was elsewhere. Eyebrows drawing together in confusion, Ren reached out a hand and touched his shoulder gently.

"Jo..." he started to say, but then he saw where the boil's gaze had landed. His eyes grew wide, and Ren lunged forward, snatching up the piece of parchment paper, quickly scanning it.

His heart lifted, just a little. Ren felt a smile tugging at his lips.

"Here," he said, and thrust the paper towards Jove, now hardly able to conceal his happiness. "I think you'll want to read this."
PostPosted: Sat Mar 24, 2012 7:59 pm

Jove did not want to read it, he leaped up when Ren reached for the suspicious piece of paper, stumbling backwards onto the bed as it was waved in his direction. His growl increased in intensity and pitch as he backed himself into the farthest corner. Across the room, Fruitloup continued to growl at the furniture.

He bared his teeth, if Ren continued to wave the page in his direction he would shred it without a second thought.

"Jove," said Ren, slightly alarmed at the ferocity his little brother was displaying.

Just what happened in that dream? he thought, his heart aching in his chest. But he reached out a hand, very gently taking ahold of one of Jove's wrists and tugging him forward.

"I promise it's all good," he said. "I got one too. It's not bad, I promise."

A small, slight smile crossed Ren's face.

"Trust me."
