So, today, before I went to my micro lab, I saw this thread on 4chan's Random forum dedicated solely to people gaining weight rather than losing it. I think most of them were like, "Senior in HS" --> "Senior in College", post-marriage photos, post-college photos, etc.
So, I was wondering if anyone has seen this happen in real life? Like, size 2 girls or fit young men completely transforming into huge... huges? Some of them didn't look healthy at all. Does college life have that large of an effect on people? How common is it, I'm wondering?
And how did the girls heep their facial structure? That was interesting, it almost didn't change when they went from small-->large, but I noticed (with some of my friend's, family member's, and my own face), that going from large --> small had a really big impact on the way the face just... looked. Like completely different people.
Is this a trend that is desired? Or is it just because of the lifestyles? How much did you change when you went to higher education/got married/etc?
It seemed like a big thing, so I was just wondering about you guys.

First off 4chan's random should never be visited (It's just not health, personal experience). And how much do you want to bet that the images were altered, sorry but I don't believe anyone would willingly gain that weight because it's not going to come off easily and they won't ever look the same again. Though another thing with these people what has happened is their metabolism changed and instead of changing what they eat they are gaining the weight. So I very much doubt that anyone would willingly gain weight. There are a lot of thing socially and physically wrong with it.
And before anyone starts chewing me out and dragging me on the floor on this I have a friend who was a 4x, and another friend who is 6x and I'm a size 16 L/XL/2XL depending on the brand. While I am that size I still hear about needing to loose weight. I have family members who are constantly criticizing my eating habits telling me I need to stop eating at fast food (I don't eat out period), I just don't have a fast metabolism and I exercise every day.

MonstrousMelee So, I was wondering if anyone has seen this happen in real life? Like, size 2 girls or fit young men completely transforming into huge... huges? Some of them didn't look healthy at all. Some people want to gain weight because they know they're underweight to the point of being unhealthy and they want to get back up to a healthy weight. Sometimes actors gain weight for a certain role. Sometimes bodybuilders gain weight, then lose it all again so that they can do before and after photos for a a certain diet, pill, exercise routine, etc. Some people want to gain weight to break a world record. Some people want to pack on muscle mass. So yeah, I have heard of people gaining weight on purpose. Sometimes it's for healthy reasons, and sometimes it's for unhealthy reasons. MonstrousMelee Does college life have that large of an effect on people? How common is it, I'm wondering? I don't think college really has anything to do with it. There are so many movies that portray college as a big crazy party, but that certainly wasn't my experience. I didn't really see any craziness or drastic changes in personality for the worse. If anything, people seemed to get a lot more mature after high school/while in college. MonstrousMelee And how did the girls heep their facial structure? That was interesting, it almost didn't change when they went from small-->large, but I noticed (with some of my friend's, family member's, and my own face), that going from large --> small had a really big impact on the way the face just... looked. Like completely different people. Some people's faces change drastically when their weight changes, but other people's faces don't change much. It really depends on the person and how their fat is distributed. Also I'm not familiar with that forum so I can't say for sure, but like StateAlchemist mentioned it's certainly possible that some of those pictures were faked. MonstrousMelee Is this a trend that is desired? Or is it just because of the lifestyles? How much did you change when you went to higher education/got married/etc? Some people want to gain weight, but I definitely don't think it's the norm. I don't think it really has to do with school or marriage either. I mean, a lot of people do put on weight as they get older, but most of them were not trying to put on weight. I've been wearing a lot of the same clothes for 10 years or more. But lately I've been noticing that I don't fit into a lot of my pants as well as I used to. There are a couple of pairs that I usually can't fit into at all anymore. I'm not trying to gain weight. I walk, I bike, and I eat healthy. I probably eat healthier now than I ever have before. But sometimes your body changes when you get older.

Well, my boyfriend used to be a skinny, skinny guy. When he got to college, he got really sick of the way he looked and started taking weight gainers, increased his daily intake of calories, and lifted lots of heavy things at the gym. He's 5'8" and use to be 120 lbs but now he's like 155-170lbs, most of which is muscle weight. It's kind of sad that I would say this, but if he hadn't gained that weight, I probably wouldn't have found him physically attractive, so I was pretty surprised when he told me he used to be skinny. So I guess there is quite a bit of pressure for skinny guys to bulk up :X
I actually do think that just being in college can effect your mentality about your body image. When I entered college, I was finally free from the constraint of my parents. I could come and go as I please (usually to the gym or biking outdoors) and I was no longer yelled at when I didn't finish my dinner. That really helped me lose quite a bit of weight (you can check it out in the Before & After thread).

Okay, you're right about the 4chan thing. Old addiction. And they could have very well been edited, but the weight gain looked extremely natural; exactly like my aunt [from a size 4 to about 18 in just a couple years]. Some of them were photoshopped, out of about 40, I'd say about seven to twelve were shopped. And about four of them were going the other way; fat to thin. I think the metabolism could be slowing down, but after noticing your pants don't quite fit, wouldn't you change something? I don't know. Some people do gain weight for show, though. Did you see that article about the woman who wants to become the world's fattest woman marrying a cook, or something? Mother of two, and dead-set on becoming the fattest woman. Of course, not everyone has that mindset. I think most of it is stress or accidental or just not realizing that the body is slowing down.

LorienLlewellyn Some people want to gain weight because they know they're underweight to the point of being unhealthy and they want to get back up to a healthy weight. Some people want to pack on muscle mass. So yeah, I have heard of people gaining weight on purpose. Sometimes it's for healthy reasons, and sometimes it's for unhealthy reasons. Yes, I'll admit, putting on weight for health reasons is totally fine. I really would never want to be thin-thin, because I really just don't think it's healthy. I read an article some years ago about having just a little extra weight is better for you by about 2-5 years. (Said the pack-a-week smoker.) I meant more like, going from an acceptable weight to something edging on the health risk of obesity. Gaining muscle is fine, too. This was all just straight-up, adipose, white fat. LorienLlewellyn I don't think college really has anything to do with it. There are so many movies that portray college as a big crazy party, but that certainly wasn't my experience. I didn't really see any craziness or drastic changes in personality for the worse. If anything, people seemed to get a lot more mature after high school/while in college. At first, I didn't think so either. College, for most people, it seems, isn't a big crazy party. However, I do know a lot of people in this city tend to go out a lot, and this school is not considered a party school whatsoever. But, I've seen at least three acquaintances go from nice, healthy 10-14s to 18-20s, which is still healthy if it fits your body mass index, but if it's damaging because it's too big proportional to your size, then I think it's kind of unhealthy. They, however, are high-science majors; Chemistry, Physics, Medical, and I guess I could count Psychology, and don't go out. So, it'd be stress rather than wanting to. And...There are others, like the Comm major I met who went from 22/24 to about a 16. But those seem a lot rarer. Here. I, myself, went from a 14 to an 8, and I'm not done with school yet. LorienLlewellyn Some people's faces change drastically when their weight changes, but other people's faces don't change much. It really depends on the person and how their fat is distributed. The body's metabolic functions naturally decline with age. But, I was referring more to the change over less than three to five years by extreme amounts.

So I guess there is quite a bit of pressure for skinny guys to bulk up :X Oh, gaining muscle mass is fine. I meant like, full-on adipose tissue. Fat. I think that if you want to turn your body into stone and muscles, that's okay. And you're right - there is a huge pressure on young men to bulk up right now. It's just as bad as the anorexia craze that hooks young women. And just as unhealthy if they don't know what they're doing. Or if they become obsessed. Spicy Camel I actually do think that just being in college can effect your mentality about your body image. When I entered college, I was finally free from the constraint of my parents. I could come and go as I please (usually to the gym or biking outdoors) and I was no longer yelled at when I didn't finish my dinner. That really helped me lose quite a bit of weight (you can check it out in the Before & After thread). I definitely agree with you. Being able to leave or stay whenever, being able to buy your own groceries, and decide when and what you want to eat can have an impact on your image. In addition to that, you've either got more or less peers to come out to - new peers, for the most part. And what kind of person you are and what kind of person you want to be will mix in with that new freedom, and it's probably going to have some impact on your body. Of course, that could be negative or positive, there are about a jillion variables, but yeah.
