For someone of her rank and position, the status of the kitchens wasn't a problem. Aria had her own pantry and kitchenette to cook in. She was well-off. The rest of Deus Ex? Not so much. Lance had reported to her that the vending machines were often hit upon, and someone had consumed the free complimentary crackers he had stocked in the Mist Lounge as a joke. In addition, all of this was told over her table while he ate her food while breaking in to her suite.

There were days when Aria regretted teaching Lance how to pick locks. It was an essential part of Mist training, one that Aria did not expect to have used against her. And yet... It did come with its perks. One of which Aria would need some help with.

Hey Cass. Sick of a lack of kitchen? Need gun practice? If yes, text me back. -Aria

She figured the eating situation could have been a lot worse. However, she was kind of sick of people breaking everything. The bathroom, the kitchen, her poor coffee machine she'd bought the hallway for Christmas...... Everything got broken, and while living off of a stash of fruit snacks and tea was an alright alternative to starving to death, it was not the best alternative to actually taking care of herself in reasonable ways.

She made a note to actually get better 'emergency' food to hide in her room her next time shore-side while she munched on one of the last pieces of candy she had from Valentines, looking up from writing in her journal to look at the message on her phone.

It didn't sound like a trap.....

Marushii

Yes, and always! -- Cass

As long as she didn't need to break into Caelius's room to achieve either, at least.

Aria breathed a sigh of relief at the prompt reply. Excellent.

demon_pachabel

Excellent. Wear clothes you won't mind getting dirty. Pants and boots recommended. Meet me at the portal room in 10.

When Cass arrived, she would find Aria waiting for her in a blank shirt, dark blue jeans and boots. "Hey," Aria greeted with a wave. "Hope you don't mind getting dirty a bit. Ready for some gun practice with your weapon?"

'Pants and boots recommended'

That sounded like they were going to be making a mess, and yet Cass couldn't help but get excited. She was going to go do something fun! With Aria, even! That was like bonus points to the Cass-excitement-level going on. Albeit it required a small wardrobe change, but her old boots and pants she wore as a trainee would do good enough for the job. Maybe a last huzzah for them.

Though finding a shirt she would bear to part with when she had so little int he ways of clothing to begin with was a bit more of a task which she eventually reneged to as well.

Clothing would be sacrificed all over, it would be like a viking funeral for it.

Seeing anybody in an equivalent of 'civvies' around the island was a bit of a shock to Cass always, and it went doubly so for Aria who was normally well dressed to be in work-clothes like that. However, she made a point to not express that slight surprise she had, just grinning as she waved to the older hunter.

"Hello, hello! Sorry if I kept you waiting! I certainly don't mind getting dirty. Can't be worse than some of the missions they send us on, right?" she laughed. She'd been wading around in corpse-water and corpse-sand, so as long as she wasn't going grave robbing, it'd be fine.

"You would be surprised," Aria began as she lead Cass into the portal room. "Sometimes the most mundane missions turn out to be the ones with the most action. Hopefully we won't run into anything this time around. Speaking of..." The Mist lead stopped to key in their destination before pulling Cass with her through the portal.

The other side could be described as... cozy. Originally it was probably a small log cabin of sorts. Now it was plain to see that the hunters had made their mark on the place, expanding and updating the rural building with runic wards and modern-day equipment. Despite this, there was still a rustic quality about the cabin. Aria paused long enough to close the portal behind them before gesturing for Cass to follow her further into the room.

"There's a closet over there with some overalls and orange vests in them. Could you grab a couple? We'll need to put them on before we go hunting," Aria began as she moved towards the gun cabinet. She didn't bother with a key: she withdrew a set of lock-picks and sorted through them until she found the ones she was looking for. She picked the lock and selected a rather mundane non-runic rifle. The division leader paused awkwardly, turning to face Cass. "Er, you're not a vegetarian are you?" She asked worriedly, "Or wouldn't mind hunting a bit? It might take us awhile, but it'd get you some practice with your weapon while also scoring us some food while the kitchen's down. Think of this as some training in survival, just in case a portal's down and you're stuck in a specific location for awhile."

Outside, the barking of dogs could be heard followed by the muffled shout of someone trying to quiet them down. This seemed to encourage the dogs, who proceeded to bark even louder.
PostPosted: Mon Mar 19, 2012 2:51 pm

And oh what an adventure they were going on! Cass was more and easy to pull along through the portal and she seemed to be all sorts of excited on the other side. She could definitely tell how it had once been a log cabin of sorts, giving it all a long and interesting look, taking a moment to take in the details of things while Aria closed up the portal.

When she was beckoned, Cass followed further into the Cabin, going over to the closet to pull out a pair of both the overalls and the orange vests, giving them both a sniff curiously, before she looked to the other woman. "I've never been hunting before." She meant the 'go outside with a rifle and shoot animals' kind, as she'd been doing the other kind quite often for a year. "I'm not Vegetarian. I like meat too much for that." she added with a small laugh. "It'll be an experience for sure."

Still, it sounded like there were other people around and Cass walked towards a window to peer outside curiously. "Where are we? What is it the season for, hunting wise? I know there are a few different 'seasons' for Deer and Ducks and other things like that too....." she asked, moving from the window to go over to Aria and offer her a set of the overalls and a vest.

Cass' response drew a nod from Aria, followed with a sigh of relief. "Good. I should have asked you earlier whether you were a vegan or not -- I'd have hated to drag you out here only to find out that you were." Of course then for her troubles Aria probably would have dragged Cass to a resteraunt to make up for the awkward.

"We're in Manitoba, Canada. Some hunters pitched together to buy this land in order to have a place to do some hunting -- the normal kind, at least." Aria explained. "Technically we're out of season, and water fowl is next month. But since we're on private land..." Aria grinned. "It's technically breaking the law, but not many hunters come out here to hunt anyway. I think most of them have forgotten about this place in light of recent events."

Aria set the non-runic rifle down and accepted the overalls, slipping into them with a fair amount of wiggling. "Tch, I hate these things." She complained as she adjusted the straps. "There! Alright. Since Deus Ex isn't exactly the best in terms of food right now, we're going to have a crash course in roughing it. That is, hunting, cleaning, skinning, and cooking food the rough old fashioned way."

The division leader swung the rifle over her shoulder and grabbed a couple boxes of extra ammunition before closing and locking the cabinet. "Do you have a knife? Flint and tinder or swedish fire steel?" Aria asked, glancing over to Cass. "Also, what are your thoughts on duck?"
PostPosted: Tue Mar 20, 2012 5:27 pm

"If I was vegan, I don't think I'd be eating very much around home base anyways. Unless I learned the art of the wild grasses of the island or something." Which part of her wondered if she should invest in that sort of knowledge anyways, given how things had a way of going around the facilities. What with the same people destroying the same things.

"Recent events?" Cass inquired for clarification as she also pulled the overalls on tripping herself over to hit the floor at one point. Which just resulted in her hilariously rolling on the floor to pull them on over her normal pants before she sat up and shifted them in various locations where they'd just gotten plain uncomfortable. But she seemed no worse for wear for it and ever more energetic.

"Sounds like a safe set of life skills to have right there." again, excitement laced her voice as she started to go through the bag she'd brought with her - her emergency out-the-door kit she had - rifled around in it. "Have the fire steel and will a combat knife work?" she asked, pulling it out and offer out to the Mist Hunter. "Or should I be investing in another knife for this kit next time I get a chance to be shoreside on a weekend off?" It seemed to her like she should have been investing in a few things already for the sake of survival besides a knife.

Once she'd offered the knife for examination, she pulled on the obnoxiously orange vest. Cass knew exactly what that was for, so not getting shot was probably somewhere in the plans for hunting. Even if nobody else was out hunting too - that they knew of.

"As for Duck, I've never had it."

"Not worth it," Aria responded automatically, "Most of the edible plants on the island are already claimed or plucked. Or they're staked out by Life hunters." She made a face, shaking her head. "Trust me, you're better off learning and experimenting with edible plants elsewhere. If it grows on the island, chances are someone already discovered it before you and..." She waved her hands vaguely. "Trust me. Leave those plants alone."

"Recent events as in the kitchen blowing up," she offered. "It's turned into every hunter for themself." Aria grimaced, "I should have kept a better eye on you Mists. How have you been surviving without the kitchens?" Or should she even ask? She knew Cass was with Marcus, and he seemed like the reliable sort. Perhaps they had teamed up? Or something else.

Aria accepted the combat knife and examined it. "This will do. I'd suggest keeping it on your person. A knife is very useful, and it doesn't do you much good if it's in your bag when you lose it, right?" Aria handed the knife back to her, pulling on her own orange vest at the same time. Aria herself did not take anything more than the rifle. Either she had everything already in her pockets, or she was really roughing it. Or depending on Cass to bring everything they needed in her bag.

The division leader gestured for Cass to follow her as she lead the way out of the cabin and around to the back. Here the source of the barking dogs were revealed. The dogs barked louder upon catching sight of the two ladies, tails wagging as they were almost set beside themselves. Aria exchanged words with another hunter who came out of a nearby shed, their conversation lost to the barking din. Finally Aria pulled away as the hunter went to release a dog. The dog was a yellow labrador with a blue collar that bounded next to Aria, nearly tripping her before giving Cass the same treatment.

"Meet Beau," Aria laughed. "She's Lance's little retriever. Come on, girl! We're gonna get some ducsk! Yeah ducks!" The word "duck" had the retriever's tail swishing madly from side to side as she danced in place, excited.

"Once we get down to the lake, we'll need to be quiet." The division leader added, glancing over towards Cass. "Do you have any questions you've been dying to ask anyone or anything? Either about Deus or myself, the Mists, or...?"
PostPosted: Tue Mar 20, 2012 7:50 pm

"Ohhh...that's true." Cass relented a bit too easily. She didn't want to know what the Lifers were doing to the plants if she didn't know already. Definitely safer from the route they seemed to be taking anyways. When Aria mentioned the very incidents she was familiar with as the recent events, Cass nearly facepalmed. "Right. You meant... those..." she waved her hand vaguely towards the portal. "hunters, not....." clearly Cass was starting to get her 'Hunters' mixed up in the context of things and she laughed slightly apologetically for her mix up.

"I've been managing here and there. Not the best, but it could be a lot worse. Marcus has been taking pretty good care to make sure I don't completely neglect myself." she smiled awkwardly, but didn't seem to mind confirming Aria's suspicions. Cass was pretty obvious about things, after all. She tried to not be, but she was.

Taking the knife back, Cass seemed to puzzle over where she should keep it, looking at the overalls, then the vest. She ultimately tucked it on an inner pocket of the vest, keeping the blade itself inside the pocket to keep it from jostling out, but taking Aria's advice to heart - it was solid advice, after all.

After a moment, she fished a few other things out of her bag and also shoved them into the pockets of her pants under the overalls as well as inside the vest as well. Apparently there were a few things she liked having on her person better under the idea that her bag was a possible loss.

With her preparation complete, she followed after Aria, only to be greeted with DOGS. DOGS. DOGDOGDOGDOGDOGPUPPYYYYYYY!!!! Cass was like a little kid, baby-talking them and cooing and generally turning into a complete dog-person. Cass liked dogs. She liked them a lot.

Beau was about to become Cass's best friend, lavished with pets. She'd never had a pet of her own, so even a hunting dog made an exciting companion in animaldom for the trainee. "Nice to meet you! Who's a pretty girl! Who's a pretty girl! You are! You are! Are we gonna get get some ducks??" Cass nearly mirrored the retriever's excitement. She could hardly contain it. This venture was getting better and better!

However, she was able to get somewhat more serious as Aria explained that they'd need to quiet down as they progressed nodding obediently, but the prompting about any questions she might have had seemed to actually throw her off guard a little bit, frowning. "Well, I've had a couple of thoughts floating around, like...

How long have you been a hunter? What can I do as a trainee that I'm not already doing to be prepared to be a good Mist Hunter? How does Deus fund itself? How does the runic technology work? How do the pods connect us to the golems? They say the world is going to end in December and....." she trailed off and made a face, shaking her head. "Umm...nevermind..that...." there was a frown as she actually hesitated to give the rest of her thought on that last question.

As Cass tucked the knife into her pocket, she signaled for her attention again. Aria twisted to one side and moved her overalls down, showing off her own knife. "While she's also my weapon, consider getting a sheathe like this," Aria touched the knife strapped to her leg, stroking it before pulling her overalls back up. "She's always with me, and with a sheathe you can easily shift it onto your arm and attach it to your belt. Whichever is comfortable."

Aria only beamed when Cass reacted to the dogs as she did. Congratulations, Cass -- looks like you just acquired extra doggy-duty in your near future. "They're useful for hunting, but our kind of hunting? Nooot so much. Dogs run away from Fear, hence why we don't keep any at Deus Ex. They dislike the island too much, so we keep them at outposts like this one."

The division leader stopped and knelt down to fondly rub Beau behind the ears when the dog came back to her, lavishing attention before the canine darted off ahead of them. Aria stood up, brushing her knees clear of debris before laughing at Cass's questions. "I've been a Hunter for about... sixteen years, I think?" Aria answered, shrugging. "Pure Mist, I was taken in by the Mists as soon as I enlisted. Everything I learned I had to learn either on my own or I had to shadow someone for training, too. I recommend doing that too -- just buddy up with someone that's not a Mist and shadow them for a day. Or volunteer to help them out. It means more work, but it's also more hands-on experience."

"Funds? Runes? Dunno. And the Life division is in charge of the golems, they'll know." Aria shot back her answers with a grin, a grin which faltered and faded. The division leader had stopped and was staring into the forest, seeming to fight with herself. "The world," she began softly, "Actually very nearly did end in December once."

Cass was making notes of things she needed to get for her future ventures shoreside. She'd have to get used to wearing the knife around and find out where it would be the most comfortable as well. It probably wouldn't hurt her to get used to using it, if only because there was a chance someday she'd be using the Runic Knives as well. Shoot, she needed to get her clearance on those again, didn't she? She'd figure it out.

This was just sort of crash-course teaching her things she needed to do to prepare herself. It was a good learning experience yet and they'd only barely gotten out of the cabin, even.

"I've noticed in my...ah...experience...growing up that animals were sensitive to haunted places." she crinkled her face. "Cameras like to pick up on them freaking out, kind of broke my heart a bit. So it makes sense they'd prefer to be out somewhere here where there are duuucckkssss..." the tail end of that statement deteriorated into baby-talk at Beau again. Yeah, Cass was excited about the dog. Really really excited about the dog. "Too bad you don't like the island, girl, or we'd be able to surprise-visit Unicoorrrnnnnnnnnn.." she rubbed Beau's back. Yes, Lance was being labelled Unicorn. For how long? She didn't know.

"Sixteen years? That's almost how old I a-...mm......." Cass seemed to realize that was almost a statement that would be an 'Oh god, I'm so old' moment waiting to happen a bit too late, but grinned. Okay, so shadowing the other divisions? She could do that, she felt. She'd just have to talk up the other division hunters a little bit and see what she could do to be helpful. She was young and small, she needed to pick up and pull her weight. Getting hands-on experience probably meant she had an increased chance of dying, but with that '8 months' concern lingering over her head, she'd take every chance she could to survive and be as good as she could be.

However, Cass found herself stopping when it seemed her statement she'd begun actually had a reaction to it - the 1999 files that Rep had mentioned. She'd looked into them after that discussion they'd had, and yet there was something numbingly real about how Aria reacted. It was solid, not some computer file.

"I..." what? 'I know?', I what, Cass? It may have been the first time she wasn't sure how to proceed, leaving her frowning briefly.

Aria took another slow breath as she forced herself to keep walking, glancing towards Cass. How much should she tell her? How much should the younger trainee know? She didn't know the trainees had access and had seen the reports from 1999. What could she even say?

"I was only a trainee when it happened. I had about a year's worth of training as a Mist. It wasn't the training you received. It was..." She trailed off, then shook her head before finishing with, "I survived."
PostPosted: Tue Mar 20, 2012 10:34 pm

"Two out of Two Hundred." Cass frowned, giving Aria a sad look. Was she not supposed to mention she had read those files? She didn't know. Nobody had told her to be hush-hush about it, so she simply trailed after Aria. She didn't clarify how she knew, simply that she did. "And that's why I'm worried about my abilities as I am now."

It certainly did create this awkward hanging heaviness in the air, but Cass forced herself to push through it. "That's why I need to get better, and do as much as I can to keep it from repeating, or even having a chance of repeating." she nodded once. "And I will. I'll do you proud."

Her breath caught. Aria stopped and very carefully set the rifle on the ground before kneeling, wrapping her arms around herself tightly. "That was the main force," Aria corrected quietly. "The Mists... The inner Mists, all Fear hunters. All dead except for me. And I? Barely." It had taken her months to reach Deus Ex again on foot. She did not trust the portals as a trainee, nor did she know how to work them. She was always given the vague promise of soon. It was a promise that was never kept.

"You need more than strength to survive against the likes of them. You need your wits, allies -- anything and everything." It will not be enough. Aria looked at Cass, really looked at her. Cass was roughly the same age Aria was when the events of 1999 unfolded. But there the similarities ended; Aria had the Mists at the time. Who did Cass have? Not her. Aria closed her eyes and bowed her head. "I'm sorry. I've failed you."
