Shrivatsa plucked the herbs almost mindlessly. She had been working on this long enough that her mind had mostly divorced itself from the action. She had several of her bags already full of fragrant or pungent plants and was working on her final one. It wasn't enough to just keep small stores of useful herbs now. Ever since she had become alpha, Shrivatsa strove to keep the medicinal provisions well-stocked. Even the unicorns couldn't heal everything. It gave her a nice chance to be away from things too. She valued her time to herself, which was in short supply lately.
She plucked the herbs and thought of her departed great-grandparents. It was awful to think that she was missing them a little less every day. She didn't think that she'd ever be able to go a day without thinking about them, but now she wondered. The idea that she could eventually get used to her duties as alpha was just as intimidating as getting the position to begin with. What sort of person might she be in just a few years time?

Sakura had been watching the mare curiously for a little while now. At first, she'd walked over with the intent of saying hello, but the stranger seemed so enveloped in what she was doing that Sakura hadn't wanted to interrupt. Even so, the stranger's actions sparked her interest.
The white and red mare was picking flowers. Or so it appeared at first glance. This wouldn't have been something that Sakura would have thought odd, or even particularly noteworthy. No, it the manner in which the flowers were being gathered. It was methodical, as though she was just picking to fill some sort of quota. It wasn't the kind of flower-picking that Sakura did to find flowers to adorn her mane, or her cave.
In fact, the mare wasn't even collecting flowers all the time. Some of them seemed to be leaves and small green shrubs. She pricked up her ears, interest finally overcoming the silence. "Excuse me, what are you doing?" Her voice was friendly, but it strained just enough to betray her intense curiosity.

Shrivatsa had no idea she was being watched. She was focused on her work and the part of her mind that was left kept wandering to her great-grandparents and what they might think of her. It was easy to get bogged down in hypotheticals, but there was no way to stop herself from wondering. She liked to think that Vara would be proud, but... But there was a mare standing right there talking to her.
Shrivatsa stared at the pink and the leaves she picked fell from her mouth. It was a mortifying situation. The herd had been attacked still fairly recently, and she was so distracted that she didn't notice the mare until she was chatting with her. Shrivatsa doubted the mare had exactly sneaked up on her, either. Trying to regain her dignity, Shrivatsa straightened up.
"I am... was picking herbs. They're medicinal herbs for the herd stores."
