There was a sandwich sitting on one table in the cafeteria. It looked inviting. For that matter, it looked extremely inviting, considering it was freshly toasted, and there was melted cheese and mayonnaise, not to mention layers of ham and chicken slices and crunchy lettuce and tomatoes. It was like an oasis in the middle of the otherwise empty cafeteria.

Or, it could also have been... a trap.

Dillon couldn't help but notice that sandwich that sat there on that table. He looked at the sandwich in his hand, and back at the one over there, and then back at the one in his hand. Some might say that he was stricken with a rather strong case of Sandwich Jealousy. The mist trainee looked on longingly at the sandwich yonder. Alas, they couldn't be.

The young man sat down at his table, gazing forlornly at the egg and tuna sandwich he had. It was delicious too, but nothing could compare to such beauty that was the sandwich over there. Maybe he could swap them? Would anybody notice? He had been here for a whole five minutes and the sandwich remained untouched and unclaimed.

Slowly, slowly, he crept towards the table, looking around for the owner. Still. No one. He was right in front of it now. Dillon stood there, stunned in a moment of conflict. Was he to disregard his moral ethics and swap them .... or even make away with both? Or should he do the right thing.

<< ... Oh dear Jack look at the poor boil. Just take it already. >> Inez hissed.

He hesitated. But slowly, he hand began moving towards the sandwich on the table. Be mine now my precioussssssss

About thirty seconds later, Dillon might feel a sort of presence behind him. It was clutching a half-finished can of iced lemon tea, and it was very, very angry, to the point where it had almost acquired a sort of aura around it, and was practically radiating rage.

The hand holding the can of iced tea was trembling, and Reine might actually have crushed the can just a little, the odd crinkly sound of metal crumpling just somewhat threatening. In fact, it was almost as if Reine was imagining crushing Dillon's skull, considering the expression on her face.

"That," she said coolly, though the corners of her mouth were twitching, as if she was trying extremely hard to keep the smile on her face a smile. "Is mine."

There was a strong emphasis on 'mine'.

The mist trainee felt a chill run down his spine. Something was here, behind him, radiating an aura of ragenergy, kind of like how he felt when he heard the Boss Monster approach him in the labyrinth, but only much worse and more powerful.

Sorry I uh, I didn't see you there,” he replied nervously, clearly very intimidated by the girl who was giving him a very deadly death glare. “I uhm.” he started to apologise, his eyes flitting back to the sandwich momentarily to avoid her gaze. They remained on the sandwich for a while. “I'm sorry ....” he looked back at the sandwich again. WAS THIS THE END? Shouldn't he at least try to fight for his love?

Do you think we could swap sandwiches?” he asked almost too politely, holding up the ones in his hand. There was a flash of puppy dog eyes and his dignity level went down by 20 points. But still.

Please Please Please Please ?

She stared at him, appearing to almost consider his offer, but no- no sandwich would suffice but the one she had painstakingly put together, ten whole minutes of careful arranging and making sure all the components of the sandwich went well together, which, as she could guess from Dillon's reaction to it, seemed to have been a success.

If Reine had not already met Justin, she might be slightly more tolerant of cute boys stealing her food, unfortunately because of that ice-cream experience, any inclination to simply smile and say 'okay, fine' was gone. Encouraging thievery wouldn't really get anyone anywhere anyway, would it? Instead she pointed out the window, which might have meant anything from 'get out' to 'your sandwich isn't good enough throw it away' or.. well, anything really. Until the life trainee finally made what she meant clear by summoning her weapon.

"If you win, you can have it."

Dillon was a little nervous as to what she had meant when she pointed out of the window, until she summoned her weapon. Well actually, now that he got her idea, it didn't make him any less nervous. Nevermind that he was going to fight a girl ... and his superior on top of that ... but he was about to do it over a sandwich.

Well you know what?

BRING IT ON.

The mist trainee summoned his weapon and lashed it out at her, not meaning to do too much damage but unfortunately, he was currently far too passionate.

<< Bring the fight outside will you? >> she reminded him dryly. He really didn't have the means to pay for the potential damages.

I'll hold on to this for now alright?” he said, swooping down to pick up the sandwich and jumping out of the window.

God I hope the cafeteria is on the first floor.

Maybe it was a bit extreme sparring over a sandwich, Reine was already beginning to have her doubts. After all, it was just a sandwich-- or not just a sandwich, it was the masterpiece of her life, the highest possible pinnacle of sandwich-making she could achieve. Which meant that things like honour and glory were involved, as well as standing up for your rights.

The trainee, at least, seemed competent; he'd struck out first, before actually hopping out the window, and Reine winced from the blow- the blades had cut across her arm. She'd had some time to recover, at least, before following him out the window- it was lucky no broken glass was involved.

It didn't take her too long to catch up with the mysterious sandwich thief, though she had the decency to wait until he'd turned back to face her before slashing out at him. The jagged edge of the blade caught his jacket, and she frowned, pulling the swordbreaker back close to her. Maybe someday she'd actually master using the weapon. For now, though, as long as she was managing to hold her own, that was good enough.

"So, you like sandwiches, huh?"

Not once did he ever think of running off with the sandwich and not honouring the spar. Really. Dillon winced in pain as he felt the weapon gash a hole in his side as she pulled the swordbreaker back in. Looks like she really meant business as well.

I'll just leave it over here so the victor can claim it later alright?” he called out, walking a few paces forward and setting the sandwich nicely and carefully down on the floor before taking his stance again. The entire way he acted and that look in his eyes would tell Reine that yes, the answer was yes.

<< You're really not serious about this are you? >>
Hush now.

The mist trainee struck out at her again, landing a pretty decent hit. That may or may not have been due to the extra training he had been doing since his spar with Wilson ... or that the sandwich at stake was having such an effect on him. Either way, it was working, and he was determined not to lose.

Just in case you were wondering, yes, this is a fight over a sandwich.

Whether Dillon realised it or not, the spar was actually cheering Reine up, or at least it was taking her attention away from sandwich, and towards winning. Winning was always more important than actually getting a prize. Sort of. On the bright side, that meant that whatever the outcome of the spar was, Dillon was likely to be able to walk away with the sandwich he so desired.

The dark side to that was that Dillon might find himself unable to walk at all, because when Reine meant business, she meant business. The scowl on her face had been replaced by a slightly more creepy grin of sorts. All her focus was on Dillon, though that didn't quite help her evade his attacks- arguably this was the first experience she'd had with a weapon like this, and it was hard enough to predict where the whip would strike.

To the life trainee, that just meant she had to hit harder than he did.

The creepy grin on his opponent's face didn't bode well. Well, it didn't. Another gash on his leg and the mist trainee was really starting to feel the severity of what would be seen in the eyes of others as “a petty fight over a sandwich”.

<< ... I don't normally say this but, just walk away. It's only a sandwich and you're so cut up already >>
I don't .... nevermind

Dillon rocked himself back and forth on his feet to concentrate, which was starting to get a little hard with his injuries. He was paying for the sandwich with his own blood. Steadying himself, he poised to strike, sending out a weaker but still effective lash at the girl.

Who he had just realised he didn't even know her name.

.... He'll save the introductions for later he supposed ... if there were any introductions to do then at all.

Whether Reine even remembered the sandwich or not was questionable. A few times she'd come dangerously close to stepping on it, it simply did not matter that much, it wasn't as if it had been a tub of Haagen Dazs ice-cream that she had traded 6 months of duties for.

On the priority list, ice-cream beat sandwiches by far. Dillon's priorities, though, did seem to be very different from hers, not that Reine particularly cared. She was just slightly starting to get the hang of his fighting style, and she approved very much of the fact that he was managing to land hits consistently- when she'd started out, she'd found it hard to get used to Alynthe, and the whole attacking thing..

So Dillon was earning a bit of respect from her, but she was still intent on not losing. This time the jagged edge of the swordbreaker clashed with the blades on the whip, and with a flick of her wrist Reine deflected the blow before lunging in for another slash.

It took him only three really hard hits and halfway through the fight for him to truly realise that he was actually sparring with a really strong opponent. He may or may not have gotten a feeling about this beforehand just from the way she was glaring at him at the cafeteria. The deflection of the previous attack had thrown him off-balance and caused him to stagger back, aggravating his open wounds and costing him a twisted ankle.

<< ... Look, I'll help you alright? Just swing the whip out and leave the rest to me >>

And so he did. But nothing happened.

<< ... not like that you doofus ... >>

By that time the mist trainee was already having a hard time trying to keep steady and was shifting his weight onto his better leg. Whether or not the epic fail of the last attack was his fault or Inez not living up to her promise ... that didn't matter anymore. All he could see was that sandwich that lay there from the corner of his eyes...

He seemed to be faltering a little, weakening, but Reine shrugged it off. Maybe he was hungry. Come to think of it, she was pretty hungry, too. And that might have explained how she hadn't noticed the stone on the ground. Tripping over, her swing went wide, and she barely managed to graze Dillon.

His head was starting to feeling very .... light. Everything around him was getting rather woozy...

Sandwich ... the sandwich ...

The mist trainee swung the whip sword out blindly and began moving towards the sandwich as if in a trance. Cue the slow mo and dramatic music.

Oh my love, my darling
I've hungered for your touch
A long lonely time,
And time goes by so slowly
And time can do so much,
Are you still mine?
I need your love,
I need your love
God speed your love to me

So close... yet so far ....

Wait, where was he going? From someone who seemed competent enough, Dillon was fighting half-heartedly now, even quarter-heartedly, and that annoyed Reine slightly. The whip curled around her ankle, tripping her up, and the blades cut into her making it hard for her to break free, though after a bit of fiddling, she managed to get back up.

Cursesssss. Maybe she should end this quickly.
