Ami rolled her glaive up and down her arm nervously, waiting for her opponent. She had requested someone other than a rookie, someone who knew more than "well weapons hurt people." Seriously, some of her rookie acquaintances were just dumb with their weapons. She saw one kid hitting things with her bow point blank. Seriously.
The only downside to this meeting was that ... well she didn't know who she was meeting with. They'd set her up with an intermediate hunter, but she didn't know if it was a boy, a girl, old, young. She could get someone completely horrendous for all she knew.

Shut up Jumpy.

If Ami wanted to spar with someone experienced, she probably should have specified in what area. Before was certainly experienced in sparring but it usually did not end well for the Misty. Ah well, this was probably going to be a great confidence booster for the Moonie. He jogged up to the training field for his training assignment, his intermediate coat tied to his waist, Vanna already summoned.
"Oh hey, you Ami?" Before asked with a smile. "The name's Before. Please don't use sir, 'cuz that just sounds weird," he introduced.

Ami blinked as the boy called out her name. So they'd assigned her to a guy? Seriously, why were all her mentors men. Couldn't she just get a nice badass, but still polite lady? Would that be too much to ask for?
Still, Ami was never one to be rude. "Ah, yes. That's me." She sent the boy a courteous smile. "Nice to meet you ... Before." What an odd name. Before definitely wasn't a run-of-the-mill name. She could appreciate uniqueness.
Her eyes scanned the large wheel he had. That must've been his weapon, right? It had the same glowing runes that all the other weapons had. "So ... ready?" she asked, holding Junpei a bit more offensively, if not still somewhat awkwardly. She still hadn't quite figured this out.

Before sensed no immediate hostility from the woman. Good. Very good. He wanted to come out of this in one piece. Or relatively in one piece. "Oooh, your weapon's got some reach!" he observed, taking a few steps back and shifting into a defensive stance. "Show me whatchu got!" He declared, holding out the wheel as if his partner was some make-shift shield.

Ami didn't waste any more of her words on small talk, instead running towards Before with her glaive outstretched. Obviously she couldn't go straight for the giant wheel- that would just be stupid.
< Aim for his head. >
What? Why?
< I dunno- it'd be funny? >
Instead of taking her weapon's advice (which was, in all seriousness, somewhat intelligent), she tried to hit his side, swinging her weapon to the left, as she was left-handed. Turns out that wasn't the smartest idea though, as the weapon just rebounded off the side of the wheel.
Welp. Back to square one.

Before had stayed still the entire time, partly to see how strong the girl was and partly to help build up her confidence in herself. "Not bad, totes not bad! At least you didn't miss me entirely?" he noted, "Maybe you should try making stabby motions instead of swinging? Uh, kinda like this," Before angled his hold on his partner, turning her sideways and suddenly charging at her. He thrust his weapon at Ami, using the spikes as makeshift daggers, and felt him connect.
That sounds rather competent of you, silly Before! I approve~ Vanna cooed.

Ami felt the edges of his weapon digging into her arm. At least it was her right arm and not her left arm. Besides, it was just a scratch. Nothing a bandaid couldn't fix.
"Like this?" Ami said tentatively, trying to thrust forward like she had watched her sparring partner perform. It wasn't nearly as effective as his thrust, most likely because he had more momentum and weight when he did it.
She made a note to herself to put more momentum into it next time. Maybe she could ...

Before winced at the thrust, well, it felt more like a poke but Ami didn't need to know that. "Yeah, try figuring out other ways to wield your partner. You got one of the more conventional types, not that that's a bad thing!" he quickly added, "But it took me some time to figure out how to properly use Vanna, like so."
He gripped the handle tightly as he suddenly raised his arms overhead to slam the wheel's broadside against Ami's head. He was hoping his movement was deliberate and large enough for her to notice his intention in time but he guessed it wasn't...

Ami went flying as the broad side of the wheel smacked into her head. She didn't even see it coming- he moved so fast! She could feel a lump forming on the side of her head, even as she hit the ground. That was going to sting.
Standing up, Ami wobbled a bit and said, "Nice uh. Nice swing." Jesus was she really complimenting a guy that just knocked her lights out? Maybe he was that type of guy who looked really sweet on the outside but was actually a total sadist on the inside. Either way, Ami was suspicious.
She decided to just go back to her original way of striking things- swinging. It seemed to work much better with her body- less thrusting, more fluid motions. Ami brought the glaive around and swung at his shins like it was a baseball bat. She aimed low so as to ensure the wheel wouldn't get in the way- a direct hit!

Any stronger and the blow would have swept Before off his feet. But he'd planted his feet when he landed and was expecting a retaliation. It didn't change the fact that it hurt but he was still standing.
"Good hit! The moment you start to feel like your FEAR shield is on it's last leg, don't hesitate to swing me a notice," he reminded her, feeling somewhat happy with the pun. The pun may or may not have added the extra oomph in the Misty's swing as he stepped in close to the Moonie, stabbed her with one of the spikes, and sharply pulled upward, causing more damage to her FEAR shield than to her.

Ami reeled backwards as the dagger came towards her. She wasn't a fighter at all, but even she knew that body + dagger = bad. Seriously though, she wasn't a fighter. Ami spent most of her days reading books, not reading up on battle strategies. How she managed to survive the pod games must've been a fluke. Perhaps she simply waited out all the other contestants. Maybe she'd fought someone and by chance won with a lucky throw of a weapon. It couldn't matter less.
The point was, as soon as Before sent his wheel towards her, she was doomed. The dagger raked upwards along her stomach, and she felt the immense pain from it. A long scratch ran up her stomach, but she couldn't do anything about it.
She got back up and wearily struck some sort of offensive pose, but it wasn't very effective. She looked far more pitiful than what the ideal huntress was supposed to look like. She threw her glaive in Before's direction, completely missing her target. With a begrudging sigh, she ran over and picked it up, turning to face Before once more. She tucked the fact that Junpei could be used as a projectile in the back of her mind. If only she was a bit more experienced with this s**t. She threw tantrums, not glaives! Maybe over time she'd just learn to master her weaponry skills.
Too bad we were starting from the ground and working our way up.

Due to several instances in the past, Before had decided his BEST course of action when projectiles were aimed at him was to stand. ********. Still. Preferably while using Vanna as some sort of shield but hey sometimes just staying put was equally effective in completely avoiding danger.
"Not a bad idea that, but uh, mebbe you should have fixed your footing before hurling? And um, you should totes consider how the ******** you supposed to retrieve your partner in case he, she? gets stuck in your target. Those Halloweeners take a lotta beatings before they go poof."
And to prove his point, Before took several steps back and began to spin on one leg, waiting until the centripetal force was enough that when he released his wheel, the spikes lodged themselves on her FEAR shield upon impact.

Now Ami was annoyed. Not only was he continually beating her up, he was using the word totes. It was a total faux pas in Ami's book, and she just couldn't stand it. "Please..." she panted, "Don't use the word totes. Anything but totes."
He was right though. Though the projectile idea had been creative, it wasn't useful in battle at all. She could easily loose her partner in the midst of a big mission (like say ... in the ******** arctic), and then where would she be?
Oh! But hey! She thought of something. "Hey ... couldn't I just desummon the weapon and bring it back to me?" She looked at the glaive down in her hand, "Don't they work like that ... ?" With her words, she tapped him on the shoulder with her glaive, only to remember that it had a ******** point on it. "Oops. Uh. Sorry!"
Ami was seriously the biggest newb to this fighting ordeal.

The Misty rubbed the spot that was poke-stabbed :/ oh well, Ami looked like she didn't mean any malice by it so he shrugged it off, "You can desummon your partner but you lose your charge that way. Didn't your partner tell you that?" O.oa he asked with a tilt of his head. "Anyhoo, how's your FEAR shield holding up? Aaaaand have you ever used your charge attack before? Or on Before?" THE PUN OMG STOP IT BEFORE D<
He held Vanna aloft, letting the runes on her surface glow for a moment and the suddenly released a bright, blinding flash. The released FEAR suddenly enveloping Ami's weapon. The Moonie will find it much easier to hit Before now. "Figured you asked for an Intermediate to practice fighting with but it'll be a shame if you don't get to experience the waaaaay awesome rush of actually hitting with it."

Ami looked down at the weapon in her hands. So if she desummoned him, she lost ... charge. Whatever that was. Fear shield- she knew that one. That was what kept her from retaining any damage. If it dropped, she was screwed. She was actually rather curious to the mechanics of it all, but didn't question it. As long as it kept her alive, who cared.
Why didn't you tell me that?
< Slipped my mind. I guess it was too obvious- I thought you'd figure it out Ami! >
Oh shut up.
She tried focusing for a moment, but couldn't really feel the "status" of her shield. "Well, considering I'm not bleeding and dying," she reasoned, "I assume it's holding up." Hopefully it was. Otherwise Before might have to plan a funeral for a gal he just met.
As Before cast his FEAR over her, Ami couldn't help but feel quicker. Smarter. She could see more openings in his stance.
< Ami. Ami. Amiiiii. Go swing me at him- I'll do the rest okay. >
Jumpy this really isn't the time to mess arou-
< Just do it! >
Ami sighed, but did as he told her to. Junpei's tone told her he was actually being serious for once. She ran forward and her weapon began to glow lightly. Instead of stabbing like she had tried earlier, she twisted to hold it like a bat and swung it. Suddenly Before was being hit by a tidal wave of energy (were those ocean sounds? Nah it must've been her imagination), whacking him sideways. Oh s**t that looked like it hurt. "Are you okay?" she said worriedly.
< That. Was. Awesome. >
