Soaring across the cloudless blue sky the pale hawk's aquamarine stare targeted the commotion that had drawn her peculiar lioness friend's attention. Shouting to the cream dash of color that jogged beneath her, nearly blending into the golden yellow grass of the savannah. I see them! Keep heading east.. and a little north and you'll run straight into them!
East and.. and n-north, okay! Panting with the effort to keep pace with her gliding escort Chai scrambled noisily across the grasslands towards the sounds of distress that echoed on the plains. The familiar shrill of a prey animal being tormented. A sound that made the female's heart pound in her ears with panic, veering slightly in one direction only to be reprimanded by the avian above.
I SAID NORTH, CHAI! Rin scowled in exasperation at her companion, wondering how on earth the feline had managed to survive this long without anyone's help. Swooping low and allowing the wind to drag on her feathers, slowing her until she hovered just over a backside marked by sprawling wings.
Veering in the opposite direction she had previously leaned towards Chai bashfully ducked her head. I.. r-right, thanks..!
Honestly, she was finding it hard to think as the sounds of violence drew nearer, strides stretching to cover more ground as quickly as possible, nearly stumbling over the scene she had been struggling to reach in a hurry.

Slavering jaws snapped at the frightened and trembling zebra foal he had managed to corner away from its mother. A growl rumbling deep in his chest as the tiny creature wailed in fright and weaved back and forth looking for a way to escape.
There wasn't one.
Ninavunja had every intention of tearing the bleating creature apart. Would enjoy listening to the sound of its bones splintering in his jaws. Scattering the entrails in a bloody mess. There was definitely no escape. Circling around to one side and then the other the hyena lunged at stork-like limbs, plucking at them and enjoying the torment he caused as the little foal teetered off balance and nearly collapsed each time his teeth tugged at one of its limbs.
He never expected for even a moment that some stray lioness would come wandering into his business, butting her nose in where it didn't belong. Yet much to his surprise, white ears swiveled as the small, cream-colored figure appeared through the grass, putting her body between Nina and his prey. Amber eyes narrowing with immediate annoyance, What the hell is this? Go find your own meat bag. This is mine.

I-I can't... let you do that. Chai stammered uneasily. Her heart went out to the young zebra. Even if it was a prey beast it didn't deserve to be treated this way, her body squaring off against the hyena, making it clear that she would not let him pass. Y-you can't have this one. You'll just have to go.. go hunt something else!
Powder blue eyes wavered with unease. He may not have been as bulky as the females of his kind, but he was still fairly large in size and far better nourished than she was. One hyena may not have been something to fear for most males, but the pale lioness had never grown very large even if he appeared to be alone, he was still a threat to her safety. Timid words of dismissal didn't seem to be getting through to the aggressive bone-gnawer as he flashed his teeth and the fur along his spine bristled with growing impatience.
Why couldn't they understand? This was wrong! It was all wrong! Soft voice beginning to plead rather pathetically as she paced, shifting her weight repeatedly from one forepaw to the other. Please, don't do this.. it's just a baby! Th-there are plenty of weak, older zebra for you to hunt. Surely you can spare this little one.. he hasn't even had a chance to live yet!
While Asali'kama Chai kept the brute at bay Rin proceeded to do her part in rescuing the little tyke. Fluttering down to land lightly on the stunned foal's back, hopping two and fro with urgency. Time to make a break for it! Now! While that rock head is distracted!
When the trembling youth remained frozen in place, too frightened to move the hawk pinched his rear with her talons. From where she sat he didn't appear too heavily damaged, though there was a bit of blood upon his legs from where the hyena's teeth had scraped them raw. Get going I said!
None too gently beating her wings at the dumb equine's head Rin quickly took flight when the little one finally jumped into action and sprung. Making a mad dash to return to the herd and mother he had been separated from. Another successful rescue!

Can't? Can't let me do? Can't let me have? Nina sneezed indignantly at the foolish lioness, taking in the length of her skinny frame with confidence. The scars on her shoulder drew his eyes, apparently this wasn't the first meal she'd interrupted. If the aggravated hyena had his way though, this would be the last. Don't know the meaning of can't.
Don't remember askin' permission, either. Convinced this was a clever ploy to steal the foal for her own meal, the golden-eyed canine wrinkled his muzzle, revealing wet, white teeth. Her act was a believable one with the way her quiet voice trembled, striving to sound bolder than she was. It wasn't until he noticed the bird shoving his captive prey away from the scene that he realized this bizarre cat was serious about saving the young zebra from him. A wide-eyed stare leaping from the scampering monochrome rear back to that pink nose and innocent blue eyes in utter---betrayal! Damnit!
Charging past the figure in his way Nina drew up short in the tall grass, snarling as the striped figure disappeared amongst the rest of the herd. DAMNIT!
With a howl the dark hunter whipped around, surprised to find the brazen kitty already trying to make an escape as well. Oh there was no way in hell that b***h was going to get away with this! Nina wasn't opposed to trading up for a feast of lion for lunch, lurching after the little female with jaws parted, emitting a frightening cackle.
And despite the shortness of his stride, the burst of speed that accompanied the outrage that surged in his chest helped Nina to gain enough ground to sink his teeth into the blonde rump. Growling around the rush of blood that filled his mouth, You ain't gettin' away that easy!

Not unlike his ancestors in the firekin, Dooley was a huge lion, his soft brown mane was thick and ruffled, giving him a bed head look, permanently. Despite his extreme size though his soft blue eyes smiled, in a pleased, calm gentle way, a way that spoke of being a gentle giant. At his side a white jackal padded, her large ears twitching "Hey Dooley, somethings coming." She states turning her gaze to the horizon and the flashing blond shape, a lioness, followed closely by a very irate hyena. "Dooley, Dooley I think that lioness is in trouble." The big pale male with his mottled dark and bronze fur turns his sky blue gaze. He frowns and flickers his tail. The lioness was almost running straight towards him, she seemed so frightened and the scent of her blood hit his nose. Well he wasn't about to see the little female get hurt by the hyena. He didn't have much experience with hyenas but he easily out sized this one and though he wasn't much for violence, he had always been a gentle guy, he wouldn't let the beast hurt the poor lioness. "Come on Wes, lets see if we can't help her out." Braking in to a run the giant male lion roars a loud roar to hopefully capture the attention of the lioness and the hyena. The little Jackal nods and speeds after the big lion she yaps a bark and howls a long wolf like howl. She probably couldn't help much but she could shuffle the lioness off to one side while Dooley saw the hyena off. She knew her friend wasn't much for fighting, that wasn't to say he couldn't. She had first met Dooley as a youngster in the firekin and he had been taught how to fight how to kill and how to hunt, and how to survive alone when he became a rogue. Dooley was strong and if the hyena chose to fight the creature probably wouldn't have much of a chance. She hoped it would quickly see sense and run off.

A soft cry of surprise and anguish spilled across the grassland as pale blue eyes went round with the sensation of teeth sinking into her backside. Even if it had happened unintentionally, it was clear Chai had underestimated this hyena's tenacity. Gaze twisting over her shoulder as the weight of the canine caused her legs to wobble and sink to the ground. It was proving a tremendous effort simply to keep moving, let alone get her hind end out from under the angry male whose jaws refused to dislodge. The pain was beginning to cripple the little lioness, causing her awkward gait to slow with the only reprieve being Rin's efforts to distract and dislodge the hyena.
Get off her you filthy mongrel! A shrieking caw was near deafening in those giant ears as her talons raked at the stranger's vulnerable face. Tugging at whatever she could grab as her wings flapped and fluttered noisily, struggling to keep up with the pair as they crossed the savannah in their jointed way. Just let go right now!
Worried for the safety of the hawk that had inexplicably adhered herself to the less-than-capable lioness, Chai's voice trembled. R-Rin don't! Get away from here! I... I can---
Just shut up! I'm not leaving you alone! Rin hissed in annoyance, breathless with her effort to distract the attacker and cutting off whatever self-sacrificing speech her companion was prepared to make. There was no way she could leave the lioness in good conscience, even if Chai didn't believe herself worth rescuing. Prepared to argue further when those gentle eyes seemed to silently plead with her, the words never came. Instead, a roar shook the landscape, startling the trio.
Caught off guard by the booming, masculine sound that trumpeted, announcing the arrival of another lion in accompaniment of thundering steps, the wing-marked female dropped to the ground immediately. Fear seemed to paralyze her, wondering how she could have accidentally wandered unknowingly into a pride territory. There was probably an entire guard coming to dispatch her troublesome self and the hyena she had dragged onto their land with her. Leaning onto her side, half pinned beneath the savage beast the cornered mink bared her teeth and hissed both in fright and pain at the brute that refused to release her flesh. L-Let go! If you're any kind of hunter you can catch s-something else!

The strange kitty's rump was soft and warm beneath Ninavunja's tongue and her strangled sounds of despair and pain only fueled the sadistic creature to sink his teeth deeper. A giddy cackle bubbling in his chest, nearly strangling himself on the blood that slid down his throat. There was a reason his father had given him such a name as the one he bore now.
I destroy.
Oh yes, often whether he intended to or not, but today this lioness would know what it was like to be on the opposite end of the jaws of a destroyer. A growl of annoyance vibrating in the air, ears pinning as her hawk friend decided to attack. Pointless as that was. Clawed up or not by scything talons, Nina had suffered worse for the sake of revenge, forcing his fangs deeper as a means to teach the damn feather-brain a lesson for interfering. The savannah cat beneath him flinching under the added pressure, her legs nearly giving out beneath them. Like taking down any other prey the white-faced hyena knew when his prey was about to go down, another minute or two and the feline would be his to do with as he pleased or--so Nina thought.
Not quite as startled by the roar as the other two seemed to be, his vice-like grip only jarred when the stupid female dropped to the ground suddenly enough that Nina nearly bit his own tongue. Eyes rolling at the pitiful plea, unlikely to feel any sense of remorse for what he planned to do to the one that had allowed his meal to escape. Heh.. pretty sure I just did.

The big pale lion came to a stop in a flurry of dust and fur his teeth barred his mane bristeling. "Let, the girl, go." He growls through tightly clenched teeth, his pale eyes narrowed to mere slits as he eyed the dark hyena. "Release her." He barks his voice dropping a couple of octaves as he eyed the male musteladid.
Wessex slips beneath her companion and smiles a little doggy smile at the lioness, she wags her tail gently hoping to calm the lioness down. "Don't worry Dooley will see it off." She whispers her deep brown eyes smiling. She sends a sideways glance at the male hyena and barks bravely at the beast her ears flattening.
Unsheathing his claws the giant of a male rolls his shoulders, ready to take on the hyena. He didn't particularly want to fight but that didn't mean he couldn't, far from it, he was decended from firekin blood he had fight built in to his DNA. "Start moving hyena, or you'll taste my claws." He lowers his body slightly ready to pounce the big eared beast should it decide to stand its ground.

Something akin to horror lit Chai's face, simultaneously at the thought that this hyena had every intention to kill and eat her and that the entire scene was about to be discovered by a horde of angry lions. This was the story of Asali'kama Chai's life. No wonder her mother was always so disappointed in her, a tragic failure from the very beginning. Awkwardly swatting at the wrinkled muzzle to try and dislodge the crazed beast, Chai cried out. I didn't mean m-meee!
Stop crying and fight back you ninny! An exasperated voice growled from above where the pale Hawk circled overhead, flaring beige-tipped wings as she dove to tug at the nasty poacher's tail in an attempt to divert his attention. Anything to give the cowering lioness time to escape. Muttering under her breath. If you're going to be interrupting stranger's meals like this, you should probably learn how to protect yourself Chai, honestly!
A pacifistic lioness. Why did she always attract the oddballs? Thrown off the violently thrashing tail Rin hit the dirt with barely a sound and skidded across the grass, disappearing into the cloud of dust that was thrown by the sudden stop of the lion that had announced his presence earlier.
If it were possible Chai's already saucer-shaped eyes grew all the rounder, watching voicelessly as the bundle of feathers disappeared into the veil of settling earth. Gaze drawn to giant paws with the realization that the barreling force that inhabited this territory was already upon them. Yet as a wide, innocent stare traveled up the length of the behemoth lion the pale female was beginning to realize that it wasn't an entire troupe, but a single entity. Larger than either Mng or Talamo had been--and neither one of the two had been particularly dainty males--the calico was a frightening sight with fangs gleaming and fur raised. Her head falling in submission so quickly that her teeth clicked when her chin hit the ground. I'm sorry, I didn't mean to bring trouble to your lands.
An honest expression spoke the words her mouth couldn't form, from the upward gaze that peered at the towering stranger, noticing only afterwards the monochrome jackal that stood in his shadow. Her smile was calm and reassuring, and only afterward did Chai realize that she was being rescued. Again.
This.. this isn't supposed to happen! Flinching--though whether it was due to the mouth that had inflicted a nice imprint of the hyena's jaws upon her cream pelt, now matted with wetness and stained a diluted red from the combination of saliva and blood or the thought of involving a perfect stranger in her affairs--Chai struggled to find her voice. I.. I can.. handle this. Please. Get my friend away from here.. I d-don't want her to get hurt anymore... not for me.

Rending at fur and muscle as he twisted his head to avoid the swat, the little lioness really was a piece of work. A sinister sort of amusement curling thin lips at her protest, as if she really thought it might work. Her little parrot proved more of a nuisance than she was, swatting the noisy bird aside with a grunt.
Nina happened to notice the lion a second before his prey did, a brow arching towards the giant skeptically. He wasn't sure if the pair were somehow involved and even despite the fact that this feline was several times larger than any other he'd ever had the displeasure of encountering, amber stare remained stoic and without fear. After all, big or not he was still just a lonely rogue like this female, like Nina who was prepared to take the bossy stray if need be. Releasing his hold, finally, on his victim. It wasn't to let her go, rather, instead he stood over the crouched lioness intently, brazenly refusing the orders that were directed at him. Let go? You all got some nerve, trying to tell me what to do. Get lost! I don't feel like dealing with you, too. Though..
Nina stared down the lion with a disjointed smile. I will, if I gotta.

Clearly this hyena was stupid. That didn't necessarily mean that he couldn't fight of course, but Dooley was a hero, he was a protector and he knew all too well how to fight. This was clearly going to come down to a fight and looking over the hyena he quickly assessed where to bite the beast best to see it off without too much injury too it. He didn't want to kill the hyena after all, there was no need for that but if it chose to continue to tower over the poor little lioness, he was going to have to open a can of whoop a** on it and see it off.
Wessex smiles gently at the lioness and moves quietly on dainty toes between her friends legs to move the bird out of the way. She very, very gently mouths the little hawk and lifts her ever so carefully out of the way of the ensuing battle. Setting the bird down she smiles in a very motherly fashion." I'm sorry I got your feathers wet ma'am I promise Dooley won't leave until your friend is safe, it's not his way." She wags her tail at the dainty lioness her nose wrinkling happily. "I think that hyena has never heard of the firekin." She whispers to the bird. "He'd be going the other way if he knew."
Dooley moves forwards a couple of steps glancing only briefly at the lioness, listening to her pleas. He paid attention while Wessex saw the bird out of the line of fire so to speak, he could smell her blood on her fur and on the scavengers lips, it raised his anger. "I warn you only once more creature, step away." He flashes his large teeth, his tail slowly lashing behind him, he would have to be careful in his pounce so as not to catch the little lioness but he gauged that he he would be able to tackle the hyena away without touching the lioness just so long as she stayed still.
Without another word the massive lion launched an attack. Despite his size, Dooley could move quickly, every inch of that massive body was pure muscle, there wasn't an ounce of fat on him, he knew how to hunt, he knew how to fight and he knew how to toss away a creature smaller than him.
His huge paws opened wide and he embraced the hyena, his teeth fastening around the ruff of the creature as he barrelled his whole massive weight upon the beast. The landing was smooth and now that he was straddling the hyena he released his toothy hold and pressed one massive paw to the smaller males throat. "I ask you again to leave. Go or I will see you dead here and the lady will eat your heart for breakfast."

Stirring to consciousness--after clocking her head--in the mouth of a predator, no matter how small it may have been, was not how Rin preferred to wake up. Her pale body wriggling against the gentle hold, wings attempting to spread to pry unfamiliar jaws off in a state of confusion. What happened in those brief few seconds she had blacked out? Let go of me! Get off! I'm not dead yet!!
When she was released a few feet away from the fray perfectly unharmed, except for what damage she had taken from the scavenger, the Hawk clicked her beak, feeling only mildly abashed. You're with that big lion? I suppose.. I owe you an apology then.
Ruffling her feathers in an attempt to dry the dampness on them soaring blue eyes examined the jackal and then her companion with critical eyes before nodding. It's fine, they'll dry. I hope you're right. Chai is well meaning, but runs into trouble where ever she goes.
Clucking in blatant exasperation at the thought of the lioness she accompanied she mused over the name. Firekin. It may or may not have been familiar to her, but then before meeting with Asali'kama, Rin had barely paid much mind to the affairs of lions. Perhaps, but then.. perhaps not, that one may be brazen, but he doesn't appear to have much of a brain in his head.
Barely several feet away from their casual conversation Chai stared at the hyena hovering over her and grimaced. The heroic stranger didn't give her much more time to react then that before leaping into action, taking her captor with him as he sprung in a surprisingly graceful arc overhead. Bravely threatening the hyena that he now pinned to the ground beneath one immense paw, despite her plea that he not involve himself.
Why were males so stubborn?
Unable to do much more than stare at the lion that had selflessly assumed the role of her protector, pinned to the ground and jaw hanging agape, Chai probably looked rather foolish. Brows furrowed with worry for the safety of her savior, even if he was certainly big enough to capably handle a fight.

Every demand rolled off Nina like water, gaze cold and hard as he watched every step of the titan's advancement, sniffing derisively. Go to hell!
Baring his teeth in defiance those bone crushing jaws had barely begun to descend--prepared to show just what he thought of the lion's orders by sinking his teeth into the pale neck just below him. His teeth, however, failed to scrape the silky pelt of the feminine cat when his entire body was thrown to one side as if hit by a wrecking ball. With fangs piercing his hide it was impossible for Nina to rip himself free, growling in frustration as he hit the ground. Muzzle wrinkled into an ugly snarl as his hind paws kicked at the solid belly above him, paws jabbing at the face that came too close to his own for comfort. Whoever this guy was, Nina didn't appreciate his meddlesome personality or his request that he leave the premises--granted it wasn't as much a question as it was a statement. Voice strained due to the lack of air that seemed to be reaching straining lungs. Even without it Nina seemed able to make his point clear enough through gritted scowl. I was here first, you leave! Take that pathetic piece of tail with you while you're at it!

The giant pale male laughed. "You are stupid yes? You know I could just kill you here and now?" He raises a curious brow those soft blue eyes fixed firmly upon the hyena whos life he held in his ample paws. He barely noticed the back paws at his belly or the paws flailing wildy at his face. He supposed he was lucky this was not another cat he had pinned, really hyenas had one weapon and it was that powerful jaw. "Now you listen to me, I am going to let you up and you start walking, do you understand that? Cause if you turn around and come back towards the lady and her friend I'll make sure you forget how to walk."
Dooley steps slowly away keeping his pale blue, very stern gaze upon the hyena, he thwaps at the prone shape his claws leaping out of their sheaths "Off with you!" He barks his order and waits , his massive muscular form still tense as he waited for the hyena to retreat.
Wessex smiles lightly at the bird "Oh yes, Dooley and I have been together for a long time he protects me I protect him." She laughs softly, it was sort of a joke, after all the powerhouse that was Dooley didn't need any real protection from a small jackal.
The monochrome Jackal wrinkles her nose in a doggish smile and pads on over to the pale lioness laying prone on the ground. "Would it be okay if I look at that bite ma'am? I'm not much of a healer but I can patch up a bite wound quite easily." she whispers her voice calm relaxed, sweet and motherly.
"Your friend was very brave, that hyena could have broken her neck." She looks at Rin and sends a similarly calm nose wrinkle at the bird. "Open your wings up ma'am your feathers will dry faster." She whispers, seemingly ignoreing the conflict barely feet from where they stood together. "Don't worry about Dooley he's a very powerful fighter, you have to be if you grow up on the sands."

Rin, understanding the amusement in the jackal's statement but not possessing much of a sense of humor, simply nodded to prove she was paying attention. Deciding to follow awkwardly along the ground as the friendly canine approached Chai her gaze drifted only once to the pair of males settling the tiff the lioness had started before her interest in them waned.
Chai on the other hand, couldn't seem to draw her wide-eyed stare from the rump of the enormous lion the jackal repeatedly referred to as "Dooley". She'd honestly never seen a male so large, nor one that seemed to drip with a silent air of masculinity, mouth pinching shut with a soft click when Rin hopped up to perch lightly on her back, just behind her shoulders. Realizing that the pair had been talking to her as she stammered dazedly. I.. uhm.. w-what?
Pay attention! She asked to see your wound, Chai! Rin scolded, wings held open as per the clever jackal's suggestion as she sunned herself to dry her pale feathers.
O-oh... Bashfully tucking her chin to her chest, the shy female frowned and shook her head gently, ears flat and forelock falling across her eyes. I.. mhh.. n-no.. it's okay. I'll be fine.. I couldn't impose.
Truthfully, she had seen worse injuries, though as the shock began to wear off--leaving behind a sharp, throbbing ache in the thin muscle of her skinny hindquarters--she couldn't help but wonder if having a plump figure might have saved her some agony. A tiny smile accepting the compliment for the hawk perched upon her back, eyes closed as she concentrated on sunning herself. She is, isn't she? Rin is always trying to help me out of trouble..
Which I seem to get into rather often. The thought crossed the mind of the angelic feline as her gaze traveled back to this Dooley stranger, her face scrunched with lines of worry. W-will.. he really be okay?
