When his phone rang, Wilson expected the message to be from one of the other trainees, not a division leader—especially not Allan. His face visibly paled when he examined the sender’s name. OhgoditwasthecrazysunleaderwhatdidhewantdidWilsondosomethingwrong—oh, false alarm. By now he had actually read the full text. Promotion. Wilson should have immediately hightailed it to the training fields, but…no. Just no. He couldn’t bring himself to do it. Instead he took another couple minutes to continuously stare at the message while nervously tugging at his goggles.
The more he stared the more he began to frown worriedly.
Could he change his mind about this? Maybe? No?
Wilson slooooowly made his way toward the training fields. Very. Very. Slowly. It may or may not have taken him ten more minutes than it should have.

It was hard, even yards away, to miss the bright orange and black dot that was Allan. The second he noticed Wilson he was all smiles, waiting until the trainee got close before giving them a hearty slap on the back.
Wilson may or may not have a large bruise there tomorrow.
"Okay, are you ready to show me your shikai, young shinigami? I know there comes a day, when everyone must grow up, and your squad leader Allan-taichou is so proud of you, he just wants to watch his little shinigami bud, and use their powers for good, but Allan-taichou must also make sure that they take the right path, the path of righteousness. Allan-taichou is expecting great things from you."
Was he talking about himself in third person? Yes. Was he winking and waving his hands around excessively for no good reason every single two words? Yes. Was Allan perhaps just a little bit eccentric, just a little bit? Yes.
"Now," the Sun Division leader pressed, entire ignoring the fact that Wilson was a Death trainee, because they were all in the same shinigami squad, according to him, "Before we find a place to optimize your maximum shinigami potential, we need to do squad formalities first." Without missing a beat, Allan pulled out a very familiar outfit. "After you have put on your ceremonial robes, state your name and division number!"
He simply stood there, staring straight at Wilson, expecting the trainee to just strip and change right there in front of the whole training field.

Up ahead he could see Allan, smiling brightly. In return Wilson offered the sun leader a tentative smile. Normally he would have been more amiable, but, well, he could still recall the unfortunate experience that was the ‘hollow exterminating’ mission. He sucked in air between his teeth, one of his arms reaching up to somehow rub his back. Once again, the trainee realized why Allan was in charge of the sun division.
Oh God. It was the gratuitous Japanese again. Gramps, do you know what he’s saying? [Youngin’, you’re more “Ajian” than I am, aren’t you?] Dammit. Why hadn’t Wilson read more manga when his obsessed friend had urged him too in college? So much regret. For now, Wilson figured it would do to nod and pretend he understood perfectly what Allan was saying. At least he remembered what shinigami and taichou meant.
And then he realized Allan was using third person.
Just smile and nod, Wilson. Smile and nod. It had done wonders for the man so far.
He furrowed his brows. Shinigami potential? What in the—OH GOD NO. His face filled with silent alarm at the robe’s reappearance. Wilson had thought he was finished with that! He really should have known it would come back to haunt him. Wilson put up another shaky smile as he took the outfit from Allan, who just stared. “Um…?” Waitnodidhereallyexpect—
Wilson hastily looked around the field before pulling off his jacket and shirt to put on the robe. QQ "Wilson Hopkins. Death?"

"Death?" Allan cracked up, as if this was somehow really funny. "Well close enough, but the actual term for 'death reaper' is shinigami, just pronounce it out loud syllable by syllable like I do, it'll come to you naturally. Oh yeah, I almost forgot-" The Sun Hunter had right beside him a giant bag. He began to shuffle and search in it as he talked. "- I brought something for you after the mission of course, think of it as a prize incentive."
A few seconds later, he brought out a plush backpack, holding it up in the air with a sort of 'TADAAAAAA' noise, and shocking two practicing Hunters nearby to the point where both of them almost impaled each other with their weapons. The two wisely moved away from Allan and Wilson, but not before shooting the 'prize' a few strange and resigned looks.
And because it was Allan, he decided to be as kind, helpful, and encouraging as he could, leaning in close to Wilson with the plush smothered right in front of their face. "What do you think of this, cute huh? I bought it at the last anime convention for like, twenty bucks, and the girl gave me this awesome set of notepads and erasers too for free because, guess what, she said my outfit was super original."
Yes, because everyone needed to know about Allan's hobbies. The Sun Leader seemed to think so, going on a bit regarding making his own props, while leading Wilson forward step by step. They stopped a little bit in front of the Shadow Run. "So how about this, my fellow shinigami? We can make this a sort of friendly competition run. You kill as many hollows as you can and then compare scores with me. Don't worry, I'll handicap myself by only using one sword hand okay? You won't have to worry about a thing, just focus on using your shikai."
Somehow, friendly competition with a division leader did not seem that friendly regardless of who it was not to mention, didn't Allan say earlier that he was going to give Wilson a choice on the training course?.

Wilson stared at Allan. What? And for once, Wilson actually knew what the word meant. “Naturally. Right.” The look on his face was hardly convincing and it seemed to fill more and more with thinly-veiled horror the more Allan spoke. His suspicious were confirmed when Allan finally pulled out a backpack. The trainee faked a smile to appease the hunter.
That was definitely not an incentive, but at least he actually recognized the character. Plus, maybe Em would like the backpack?
Probably not.
He noticed a pair of hunters moving away and he shot them a helpless look. Someone please save him.
“Definitely cute,” he managed to choke out as the plush was pushed into his face. Behind the backpack, Wilson managed to curiously stare at Allan. An anime convention? How did he even find the time to—nevermind. While he tried to wrap his mind around his current situation, he remained completely clueless to their final destination before he nearly dropped to his knees. It was Shadow Run.
Wow. How should he tell his superior that he absolutely failed at this training course? Let’s just say he had failed to make it past even the first wave before. Multiple times, even.
Mouth open as he vainly scrounged words together, Wilson turned toward Allan. “Uhh. Sir? Do I really have to do this particular course?” Please say no.

Sun Hunter SHADOW RUN General Information The Shadow Run is both the simplest and most dangerous training course that can be run without a golem. A flurry of continuous attacks is what the Sun Division holds in highest respect, and the course reflects that. The course itself is a simple tunnel, reached via portal. Within the tunnel await hundreds of weak, hungry shadowlings. Nothing to worry about on their own, but capable of overwhelming a Hunter through sheer numbers at the first moment of weakness. At the other end of the tunnel is another portal, leading back to the course observation booth.
If you fail: your character is KO'd, but there's always a senior hunter in the observation booth with enhanced bandages at the ready. They should reach you in time. Really. Trained and trusty professionals on-hand 24/7.
If you win: peen points and bragging rights to those who take out the greatest number of shadowlings and go the most turns without needing to attempt a recovery maneuver.
Mechanics You must get through 5 waves of attacks to make it through the tunnel. Simply roll for attack as you would in battle. If you miss, your character falters in their attacking and is overwhelmed by shadowlings. After 3 successful hits, you may use your weapon's charge attack.
Bonus Mechanics This bonus is consumable. The bonus in this course is in the form of "recoveries" ~ these are would-be missed attacks that are quickly recovered and turned into a successful hit. Basically, they can miss once and roll again for an extra try. If you keep consecutively missing, though, and run out of recoveries, it's lights out. These do not equal an automatic pass for a round, you still have to land a successful hit to proceed.

"You are a shinigami! Be proud of yourself, shyness is unbefitting of one so young and powerful!" At the portal to the Shadow Run, Allan gave Wilson another encouraging pat-
- That pushed the trainee into the portal and right into the room of shadows without even a second to mentally prepare themselves. Fortunately, before Wilson could become Shadow Spawn food forever, there was a very loud yell as Allan went charging straight at Wilson-
- And plowed right through the trainee, yelling something about how they should catch up and being left behind. And possibly something about their winning score being 10, 502 hollows.
So much for a handicap. Status Wave: (current wave number)Attack Dmg TO WILSON: 17-6 = 11 Total Shadowlings taken out: WHATEVER IS IN THE AREA Recoveries left: INFINITYYYYYYY

Wilson would have liked to have argued that he wasn’t being shy, but logical because past experience clearly told him that he just plain sucked at fighting. He would have, but Allan had already pushed him into the portal before Wilson could even think to summon his weapon. “Wha—“
“—AAAAAAAAAAT??” He tried not to panic, and surprisingly he remained calm enough to pull the goggles around his neck off and turn it into the bulky weapon he called Gramps. Wilson had only gotten to put his mask on when the shadowlings pressed closer and closer until Allan promptly ran him over like a raging truck.
It hurt like a ************. The trainee wheezed behind his mask, the backpack and cannons heaped together by his side before he disappeared under the pesky little creatures.

"Backing up already, squad member?" It would be safe to note at this point in time that the area between where Allan was currently standing and the area between Wilson, somewhere a few feet in length was notably sparse to very void of shadows. In fact the shadows were, not unlike a certain other mission the trainees had partook in very notably moving away from the Sun Division Leader.
It only took two steps for Allan to crouch next to Wilson, grabbing the trainee by one arm and literally plucking them out of the shadow masses. Wilson may or may not have hung in the air by one arm like a prize fish. "Don't give in to the darkness of your heart, despair is not the way - egads!" It seemed at that very second Allan had noticed something very, very important, pulling Wilson in closer to scrutinize. "You've already begun to hollow-fy, this is very bad bad news, shinigami, you need to search deep in your heart and really, truly, believe in yourself, this could be your last chance."
And before Wilson could ask how exactly one believed in themselves, Allan pretty much threw them. Forward. Into the next accumulating mass of shadows.
"NOW GO!" OOC - WILSON CAN NOW REROLL AND "RESTART" THE SHADOW RUN MECHANICS AGAIN, and takes -10 damage from his last try.

Backing up? How about drowning in shadowlings before he passed out? Except he wasn’t buried under them anymore. They were all gone. Wilson slowly sat up, baffled eyes peering out from behind his mask. How the hell did Allan do that? Did the division leader have superpowers? Could maybe Allan give him some of his superpowers too? He really needed it.
And then he was hanging in the air. Wilson attempted to lean down and grab his weapon. What the— “Hollow-fy? No, I’m perfectly fi—”
How horribly inconvenient for Wilson that he still had yet to reach out for his cannons when Allan threw him into another mass of shadows.
Because he could totally fight them without his weapon.

Through the mass of shadows all but smothering Wilson, the trainee would hear a voice calling to him from the distance, a soft voice, a melodic voice, followed by a burst of heavenly white and-
- No wait, that was just Allan singing an inspiration song to motivate Wilson. It sounded something like this.
"KABOSOI HI GA KOKORO NO HASHI NI TOMORU", the Sun Division Leader air guitar-ed as he sang in possibly the worst high-pitched voice possible. If the shadow monsters didn't kill Wilson, it looked like Allan might as well have, as the trainee did not even get another second to flail, or panic, or even put his hands to his ears as the Sun Lead grabbed Wilson by the foot and threw him just a little further.
"ITSU NO MA NI KA MOEHIROGARU NITSUJOU-"
And he was still singing. OOC - Wilson loses -5 HP from that lesser throw, but he better start hitting some stuff soon, preferably just to stop Allan from singing - He can roll again for shadow run, if successful, continuing applying the same mechanics until a fail.

Wilson had never been one for Japanese songs. He completely blamed it on the piss poor singing skills his friend had whenever he dragged everyone out to karaoke. Also he couldn’t read Japanese for beans because they never put the lyrics in English letters. Never.
There was nothing he could say nor anything his partner could do to console Wilson as he continued to kneel on the ground. It was very reminiscent of the OTL. He couldn’t even summon the strength to cover his ears as he cautiously reached out for his weapon. It was almost like a horror movie. Just as Wilson grabbed the strap of his pack he felt something grab onto his foot—panic—and he was thrown forward again.
“WHAT DOES THAT EVEN MEAN???” What kind of song was this?! It was the only (albeit very stupid) thought that ran through his head before he succumbed to the shadows again.

One had to wonder if Allan's sole purpose was not to test Wilson's promotion mission but to see how far he could throw the trainee with a legitimate excuse. A few moments later, still singing, the Sun Lead walked over, literally walked over taking his good ole time, and pulled Wilson out again, this time by his clothes.
"The song means," Allan finally cut off, talking to Wilson in a loud stage whisper, "That I believe in you, my fellow shinigami. Now, I know this is difficult, but you see that?" He took a second to use his free hand to tilt Wilson's head to the crawling shadow masses who were still scurrying away, "Those Hollows, they feed on our insecurities our fears. We gotta bust 'em man, we gotta conquer that fear in our hearts, and give in to the light. I believe in you man, I believe that you can use your shikai, now, make it count!"
Oh good, any longer and Wilson may or may not have died from asphyxiation from having his shirt and jacket lifted like that. He didn't have time to recover even to breathe as he was thrown forward, yet again.
This may possibly have been the worst few minutes of the trainee's existence, ever.
((OOC: Allan's throwing distance: 47 feet away goooooooo ))

He severely doubted that was the actual meaning of the song. Wilson might have been able to muster the courage—because by now he was slowly growing annoyed, but more dismayed (and ready to QQ) than annoyed—except he was being unceremoniously held mid-air by his clothes. The trainee attempted to gag, but the gas mask made this task even more difficult (fresh air, why he no haz??) He could only mutely let his head be angled toward the hoard of shadows. Insecurities? Fears? The only fear in Wilson’s heart at the moment was Allan.
Wilson gulped in air as the leader finally threw him free.
Good thing he actually held onto his weapon this time. Now he could put it on and actually try to do something, which he did. (Shocking I know).Status Wave: 1 Attack Dmg: 2 Total Shadowlings taken out: 2 Recoveries left: 0
