Mitzi peeked out one of the back entrances of the Reaper dorm, and sighed in frustration. Apparently someone had tipped off a few of the reporters that the students were using other ways in and out of the dorm, as a few had managed to find their way even to this disused path. Still, she knew she wasn't the only person using the alternate doorways in and out, and soon enough someone else would come along.

Sure enough, a group of other students passed about ten minutes later. The four of them didn't even glance at her, lounging like she was waiting for someone, and headed straight out the door. The ghoul had trouble not grinning a little as she heard the shrill voice of the female reporter start calling at them, and the students in turn trying to escape without too much harassment. Exactly the diversion she'd been hoping for. Settling her bag over her shoulder, she slipped out the door, and headed straight off the path into the thicker part of the gardens. Sure enough, the reporters were too busy to notice her, and once off the path she was relatively safe, at least for the time being.

She headed towards the hot springs, planning to relax for a while and hopefully lose some of the stress that still remained from the Trial of Famine. Her swim suit and towel were safely tucked in the bag - if the various pests on campus hadn't found the hot springs yet, Mitzi wasn't going to be the one to give it away. She was just passing the Undead dorms, her thoughts wandering, when she caught sight of a familiar zomboil.

As much as the point of this exercise was to relax, there was something she did want to talk to him about, and maybe finding out exactly what the jack had happened the other day would help. So she raised one hand in a wave and called out to him. "Hey, Alex!"

Alex had just intended to stop back in at his room, frustrated with everything that was going on at the school with all of the reporters and guests and overcrowding. It wasn't because he didn't like crowds or anything, oh no. In fact, Alex felt more comfortable around large crowds then he did when he was alone. It was the fact that these crowds were always trying to barrage him with questions, one's that he had answered time and time again, and he was too slow to get away from them.

Also he was a bit disgruntled about the library being barricaded off. No new books to read. This was not acceptable.

In any case, he had been spending far more time hiding out in a certain weremantis's room then usual, but was running out reading material over there as well, so a much debated trip back to his room was needed.

The fact that his pets also needed to be fed also factored in to this debate a little bit.

He was lucky in that most of the reporters seemed to be hanging out in different areas today, so the way from the monster dorms to the undead ones were mostly clear. He had his backpack slung over one shoulder, full to bursting with books that he would be returning to his room. His gaze was firmly fixed on the ground as he made his way to the dorm, not wanting to draw attention to himself by making eye contact with anybody. This was probably an inefficient way to deal with reporters who just didn't care and would be able to jump him unexpectedly, but the zomboil was sticking with it.

It wasn't until he heard a familiar voice calling his name that he even realised there was anybody near him. Well, as far as he knew, none of the reporters had even bothered to ask him his name, so it wouldn't be one of them. His gaze shot up from the ground and around to the source of the voice, only to spot a flash of purple hair and a scantily clad reaper ghoul.

Alex...was caught in a sudden state of awkward mental dilemma. Normally he would have had a ready smile for anybody who approached him. Normally he would be only too happy to have a familiar face to chat with. But Mitzi..the last time he had seen her, was on the beach during the trials, when he had yelled at her, blaming her for what happened with Yin. Was she here to tell him off? To apologize? Alex didn't want any apologies, he didn't want any awkward conversation. He just wanted to get rid of these books, get new ones, and get back to his boilfriend's room.

And so, he hesitated, giving her a sort of half smile that looked unsure and possibly a little worried, before answering.

"Ah..hi, Mitzi. What's up?"

The ghoul had already started heading towards Alex when he turned her way and replied, and her steps faltered for a moment at the decidedly ambivalent greeting. She continued over, although at a slightly slower pace, until she was walking alongside the zomboil. "Just on my way to the hot springs. I'm hoping all these crazy reporters haven't found it yet, and I can chill out there for a while." She shifted the bag on her shoulder, letting a moment of silence hang between them before it simply became too awkward. "Look, Alex, about what happened yesterday..."
PostPosted: Tue Mar 13, 2012 12:40 pm

Alex shifted back into movement as the ghoul walked beside him, his body tense as though if things went bad, he might be able to distract her and run. The fact that he was even considering trying to run was quite laughable, since after two steps he'd likely be sprawled out on the ground.

Seeing Alex try to run was like watching a baby learn to walk. It was quite pathetic, really.

"The hot springs." He said slowly. "To...chill.." He wanted to laugh, as it just sounded mildly absurd.

"Well..uh..have fun?" He was really really hoping she would just take off on her way. He was not in the mood for this. But no, she just got suddenly silent for a time, and the silence between them started to weigh down on him, making him feel like he should say something else. He was just about to open his mouth to do so when she said something, and his mouth snapped back shut.

Oh jack, she was really going to bring that up right now.

He wanted to say 'Look, it's not your fault, I know you were just trying to help,' to try and stop her before she could continue. He might not have believed what he was saying, not entirely, but if it would get her to move on and get over it, then he could maybe say what he had to.

Except that he couldn't do that. Even now, thinking back to it, at the devestation on Yin's face, at the way he just...wandered off into the ocean as though he just wanted to die..... It made Alex angry all over again, as much as he wanted to suppress it.

"What about it?" he almost snapped at her.

Okay, this was just not fair.

She had been trying to help. If it had been any other boil than Yin, sure, it would have been awkward as hell, but they would have just laughed about it and gotten on with things.

What was wrong with these two boils that they were treating it like it was such a big deal? And the zomboil's tone pushed her from guilty straight through defensive, and heading towards angry herself.

"I'm sorry. There, I said it. Again. I don't understand why it's such a jacking big deal. Is it because he's your boilfriend? Because, for the record, I'm not interested. But I didn't mean to upset you like that - either of you - and I wouldn't have tried so hard to catch him if I'd known it would!"
PostPosted: Tue Mar 13, 2012 1:25 pm

Great, he wasn't able to keep himself from sounding irritated, and now she was turning this into something bigger then it really was.

"You're not sorry, because you don't even understand what you did. This has nothing to do with him being my boilfriend. He's also my best friend, and if you had bothered to try and get to know him, or if you'd just, I don't know paid attention...." Alex just shook his head, completely dumbfounded by this ghouls lack of social understanding. Did she not notice how uncomfortable Yin got when she was around? Had she not had plenty of opportunity to bother to find out why that might be so? And then she had the gall to assume that Alex's reaction was born from jealousy rather then genuine concern for his bonded...

Wow.

"Jack, Mitzi just...I don't even know what to say to you right now that hasn't already been said once before. If you want my forgiveness, if you think a sweet smile and charming words are going to do the trick, then you're going to be sorely disappointed. You need to make things right with Yin, not with me. Good luck." He made as though to walk away from her then, fully expecting a retaliation but hoping she might just leave him alone.

Really? This was her fault for not magically being able to read the mantodae's mind?

She grabbed Alex's arm, not ready to let him walk away just yet. "No, I don't understand what I did. Which is why I wanted to ask you, so I could find out how to make it up to him. Because I don't know him and every time I'm around him he acts so jacking weird and I thought, you know, I've only been around Reapers all my life. Maybe that's just how he is." By this point she was yelling, venting all of her frustration about the situation at the zomboil. Of course she hadn't realized that Yin acted differently when she was around, because the rest of the time, she was, well, not around. And she still hadn't even quite picked up that point, floating behind Alex's words.

"And I wanted to apologize to you because I can't make this right on my own. I don't understand Yin at all. Nothing he does makes any sense to me. So I need your help to know what I did wrong, and how to fix it. And, well, because I did upset you too, and I'm sorry for that. But I don't want to screw things up even worse when I do go to talk to Yin, and I don't know who else I could ask. But before I could even try, you were making it plenty clear you don't want to talk to me. So yeah, I got pissed." Her voice had dropped back to normal levels, and now she paused, realizing that making him even more mad was perhaps not, actually, the best way to get his help. "And I guess I'm sorry for that, too. So will you please help me?"

And suddenly Mitzi got it, and knew exactly how Alex felt every jack damned time he somehow managed to upset Yin without knowing what it was he had done wrong. The difference? Alex never went and asked anybody for help with the situation. He figured it out for himself and managed to make things better, by himself. But here she was, pleading for an easy out, asking for Alex's advice.

Practically demanding it from him, if her tone of voice was any indication.

He shrugged her hand off of his arm, eyes suddenly narrowing. He had expected a retaliation, but not for her to grab a hold of him. "Honestly, Mitzi...I don't know how you can make it up to him. If you go anywhere near him, he'll probably run away. He won't want to see you, because it'll just remind him of what happened. Maybe if you weren't a ghoul, you'd be able to talk things out but.." He laughed, and it was a bitter sound. "If you weren't a ghoul, this wouldn't have been as big of a problem as it is."

Let her try and figure that one out. Maybe she could prove she wasn't a complete moron.

"As for understanding Yin...I can't help you." He really couldn't. All of the information the weremantis had given Alex about his culture, his background, the history of his kind...well, he knew that it wasn't information the weremantis wanted spread around. He knew that Yin had only really explained everything to him, and Alex wasn't about to betray the mantodae's trust by telling somebody that he barely knew, and was obviously quite upset about, things about them.

"Yin is probably afraid of you now. I don't know what you can do to make him not afraid of you anymore...except maybe..maybe if you had a boilfriend." He shrugged, because that would at least help Yin not be scared that Mitzi was going to 'chooose' him.

He'd still probably be mortified every time he looked at her though.

That was not at all the response she had expected.

She had expected the zomboil to get angry at her again. Perhaps to push her off - even if she hadn't dealt with it directly, she'd heard how strong zombies could be - or to continue yelling at her.

Of course, what she got was also not at all the response she had hoped for.

At least Alex was now taking her seriously, and he didn't seem to be angry anymore... but she found she couldn't blame him for the bitter tone to his voice. He'd probably been, and would continue to be, the one who had to deal with most of the fallout from what had happened. Which, from the sound of it, was much more severe even than she'd realized.

If you weren't a ghoul, this wouldn't be as big of a problem as it is.

There was no way, given her background, that Mitzi was going to fully understand what Alex meant by that line. She simply would never imagine what the mantodae had been through, and it was possible she wouldn't be able to wrap her head around it properly even if someone explained it. She could, however, get the gist of the comment, and it cast a new light on how Yin had acted around her, both the previous day and all the times before. She felt a slight flush of shame - as much as she really couldn't have figured it out, at least for that moment, she agreed with the zomboil that she ought to have. She could only hope that she hadn't done anything else to upset Yin without even realizing it.

She believed Alex when he said he couldn't help her understand the mantodae. Something about his tone, she knew he was telling the truth. What she really couldn't grasp was why her having a boilfriend might make any difference to the weremantis, but she'd been expecting that to happen once she met more boils, anyway. She could just let Alex know when it did, if it would make Yin less uncomfortable around her.

The ghoul's shoulders hunched slightly, her normally self-assured demeanor gone. "Thanks for explaining it to me, Alex. And could... could you please let Yin know that I really am sorry?" She was no longer meeting his eyes, her gaze now on the ground between them. "If there's anything I can do - for either of you - just let me know."

Alex's backpack was starting to slip off of his shoulder, so he shrugged it back up, then reached up to run his fingers through his hair, sighing. She seemed..defeated, like what he had said had completely thrown her and she had no argument left. That was certainly fine with Alex, who just wanted to get on with his day with as little drama as possible.

Though she was asking him if he could apologize to Yin for her, and his body tensed again, his posture straightening slightly as he gave her a hard, cold gaze. He was not her messenger boy, and he was not about to do her work for her. If she wanted to apologize, she was just going to have to find a way to do it, or wait long enough that Yin might not be as uncomfortable anymore.

He didn't tell her any of this, however, because he might feel different about it himself, given time, and so he just grunted his non-commitment. "He's...forgiven me for worse." He confessed, "But we are also best friends, above anything and everything else. The fact that he was willing to...to be something more with me after some of the things I've done...well, that just proves that it's possible things could be fine between the two of you someday. Given time." He emphasized the word time, because really, it could be a loooonnnng time.

He was about to walk away, and then he paused, her last words ringing in his head. He turned back to her again, voice cold as he said it "For now? Just leave him alone. That's what you can do for him, and for me. Just...stay away from him." Alex didn't want to see his boilfriend as broken as he had been that day at the beach ever again. Mitzi keeping her distance would definitely help with that.

Mitzi relaxed, slightly, at Alex's reassurance. She could wait, for her chance to make it up to him. She was the one who had jacked this up, and it wasn't fair to Yin to stress him out more trying to fix it. She just had to hope the opportunity would come, and that she would see it when it did.

She was just waiting for him to walk away so she could continue on to the hot springs - she needed time to think, and that seemed as good a place as any to do it - when the zomboil turned back to her. She bristled at his words, hurt and a little angry that he thought she still hadn't figured that out. That's why she had asked him to apologize to Yin for her. If the weremantis was going to be upset by her even being nearby, it probably would not be a good idea to try apologizing to him in person.

Trying to keep from scowling, she replied, "Yeah, I got that." It was soft, though, under her breath, and probably just as well as she could hear the trace of sarcasm in it. Like Alex, she was ready for this to be over, and if he didn't have any more advice, she'd rather he go on his way and not make any more jibes.
PostPosted: Sat Mar 17, 2012 12:33 am

Alex had to scoff inwardly. Did she really get it? Or did she just think Alex could apologize to Yin for her now and this might blow over in a few days, or even a couple of weeks? Maybe Alex was wrong, maybe Yin would be okay with her again sooner then he thought. But somehow...somehow he doubted it greatly.

So why was he still standing here, talking to the ghoul that had upset Yin as badly as she had? Well, there was really no reason to be. So, with a nod of his head, one that said 'good, I'm glad we understand each other.' he turned and began shuffling his way back up to the undead dorms, leaving the purple haired ghoul behind him.

Once Alex was clearly on his way, Mitzi continued on her way towards the hot springs. She walked slowly now, her head bowed in thought, her brows furrowed. Had she really upset the weremantis that badly? She hadn't even worried about that at the time, it hadn't occurred to her to worry about it. Every boil she had ever met would have expected her to be the one upset, and she'd been the one to make that split-second decision, so why would there be a problem?

Except she was the one who had made that split-second decision, and it was Yin who had been upset by it. And so now she had this gnawing feeling in the pit of her stomach, one to which she was not accustomed - guilt. And upsetting Yin had made Alex angry at her as well. It didn't matter that she had no reason to expect him to react the way he did, it had been her actions, her choices, that caused it. She'd been starting to think of the boils as friends, and she didn't like the idea that she had hurt her friends.

Her thoughts were still churning when she reached the hot springs, going round and round in circles in a way that was only stressing her out more, without resolving anything. She'd even reached the conclusion that she couldn't resolve anything, but it hadn't helped. So once inside, she changed and showered quickly, the actions giving her a brief respite from her guilty conscience. And once in the main room, she found a pool that felt about as hot as she thought she could take, and slipped into the water, settling in it up to her nose. She briefly considered dunking entirely, seeing how long she could hold her breath, just for something to focus on, but she was as usual trying to keep her hair dry. Avoiding the added fuss of dealing with her hair eventually won out.

She eventually managed to reach something like a sulky trance, feeling a general malaise but not actually thinking about anything. The only change over the next couple hours was when after a little while she switched to a cooler pool. Boiling herself was one thing she could be sure wouldn't help. And oddly enough... her time in the hot springs did actually help, in some ways.
