Finally she was starting to really be okay with her new, fabulous short hair…and realized that she was in dire need of something wonderful to adorn it with. Maybe she could start wearing hats. Hats were fashionable after all, at least sometimes. Or, or maybe she could wear cute little hairclips or something.
Something.
She wondered through the store, hand reaching out and gliding over a rather ugly feathered headdress. Well, at least the feathers felt nice…didn’t mean they were nice or anything. No, they were really quite ugly. Maybe this store wasn’t really the right one for what she was looking for…there were always other stores though…that was the point of the mall.
The blonde walked out of the store she was in and saw a girl with brown hair nearby. Now…that girl looked familiar. Who was she…
Raven folded her arms across her chest and pursed her lips, clearly thinking hard on this. The girl was very familiar to her…but…
Ah! Finally it clicked. “Mayumi!” The girl was Japanese or something. Something Asian at the very least…and always had the most beautiful hair. Maybe she’d be able to point out something that Raven could use to make her shortened hair look less…Childish. That was a good word.

Mayumi had been out shopping at, of all places, Hot Topic, to purchase a new pair of fishnet tights. Roller derby took its toll on pairs fairly regularly, but fortunately they were not too terribly expensive. It was always just a little bit weird for her to stop by that store, a girl in pinks, plaids, and strawberry prints passing by shelves of black studded leather.
On her way to another store for further shopping (she would find something she had to have), Mayumi caught a familiar voice calling her name, and paused as she looked around for the source of it. Then, spotting Raven, she wondered momentarily if she should feel self-conscious about the Hot Topic bag, decided it wasn't worth it, and hurried over to join the other girl.
"Hey!" she chimed, glossy lips parting in a genuine smile. "You cut your hair! It looks adorable!" Spreading her arms, Mayumi settled for it being an appraising gesture as she had not seen Raven in a while; if the other girl wanted it to be a hug invitation, the dark-haired girl was not opposed.

Ouch. Now, there was a pang out guilt. She had completely forgotten the other girl’s name, but here she was, knowing who she was right away, and knowing that her hair was shorter than it had been before. Well. She was just a bit of a b***h now, wasn’t she. Raven chose to interpret the outstretched arms as an invitation for a hug, and went right into them, hugging Mayumi tightly for a moment before pulling away.
“How have you been? I haven’t seen you for years, you got transferred to…Saint Mags, right? What’s it like there? As terrible as the rumors say?” She was pleased that she remembered that at the very least.
She’d wait to ask for the hair advice…but, since the other girl had mentioned her hair…maybe she wouldn’t have to wait too long. “Yeah, actually, it was an accident that it got cut. I got some…um. Some honey in it and it was totally ruined. It was one of the worst days in my life to be honest. But, it’s grown on me some. I’m here looking for some sort of…something to make it a bit cuter. I feel like with my hair this length I look like I’m twelve again or something.”

Mayumi reciprocated the hug, and grinned at the other girl once greetings were made.
"I've been alright. And yeah, Saint Mags." She shrugged a little and fiddled with a lock of her hair. "It's alright. I was afraid I'd feel all out of place there since it's not like I actually did anything bad to land myself there, but there are some other girls who are there because their parents are crazy, too."
An immediate look of sympathy crossed Mayumi's face as her old friend brought up the reason for the haircut, and she shook her head. "Oh, that sucks. I really think it looks cute, though. There are some short styles that are 'in' this season." She brightened a moment later. "But if you want some help finding a hairpin or something for it, I am always up for more shopping."

Raven grinned, nodding. That, would be completely wonderful. I’ve always been partial to headbands, but…I don’t know. I’m just not sure they look as good with short hair as they do with long hair, you know? To me it just seems they make people look like a schoolgirl. A young schoolgirl. She grinned. “But, yeah. Where do you recommend we go? And what do you think looks best with short hair?”
She looked at Mayumi’s long brown hair and gave an envious sigh. “I can’t wait until mine grows back. Having it this short is a disgrace for a girl like me. At least in my mind. My boyfriend keeps giving me crap for it too. He keeps saying that he liked me more with my hair long.” The blonde laughed. “Maybe I should just dye it and really freak him out.”

Mayumi nodded in reply, standing back to appraise Raven's new look, placing one hand on her hip. "I guess it depends what you want to wear with it, you, know? Maybe a headband with a big silly flower on it for spring, with some sort of sun dress?"
She started to walk, slowly, to be sure her friend followed. "Otherwise, maybe you could get a bunch of simple plain plastic clips in fun colors? Then you'd have something to go with everything. Or, what's your school uniform like? Definitely get a color to go with that, too, so you can at least stand out a little from the rest of the sheep." With a little laugh, she casually brushed her fingers through her own hair near her own hairpin, her favorite butterfly; she had figured that it said something about her standing with the nuns that none of them had asked her to take it out yet. Though compared to some of the jewelry her classmates wore (seriously, who needed twelve earrings?), the silvery hairpin was hardly 'disruptive'.
At the mention of a boyfriend, Mayumi frowned. "There's really not much you can do if you get honey in it, though," she replied. "I mean, would he like it better all messed up with sticky stuff? And it's not like you went like, Brittney Spears crazy and shaved your head or whatever." The grey-eyed girl had heard all manner of stories about people dumping or getting dumped because the significant other decided to change their look, but that did not mean she thought it was generally a dumb thing.
She offered an encouraging smile and patted her friend on the shoulder. "It'll still be nice when it grows back. Or maybe he'll get used to the cute little bob."

A headband with a flower…now that did sound cute, and it sounded right up Raven’s ally. Yeah…a cute sun dress, maybe blue or purple, and a gaudy, but awesome headband. She knew that talking to Mayumi about this would fix things right up, the girl was a hair genius…at least a little. She was just…kind of awesome for that.
“Oh, well, I’m over at DCU now, so I don’t have a uniform, which is wonderful…you know, they tried to make me go to that new school, HITS? Oh it was horrible. The uniform was this ugly grey color, and the skirt was long and just…there was this jacket, and…completely not form fitting one bit. At least Saint Mags has a pretty nice uniform.”
She nodded at her talking about how completely not her fault this haircut was. And she was so right. If that little brat hadn’t gotten the honey in her hair, and the honey hadn’t…shattered all over the place and chopped off that stupid huge piece…this wouldn’t have happened. “Well, he’s just a dumb guy…you should meet him someday. I think you’d like him. Though, you know. I’m sure I can at least have a little leverage over him, now that his hair is quite a bit longer than mine. He really needs to cut it. He’s so girly.”
She laughed then fluffed her hair out some. It was growing on her, she had to admit, and it would be cooler now that it was slowly getting into summertime…maybe this wouldn’t be such a bad thing.
“We should hang out more often, Mayumi. I’ve really missed you, I don’t know why I haven’t made any plans with you before now…but that has to change right away.” She made a face, then laughed once more, looping arms with the other girl, following her deeper into the mall.

"Ugh, I can't wait to go someplace where I can wear what I want to class, though," Mayumi lamented. "I mean, I do all this hard work-" She held up her Hot Topic bag for a moment with two fingers, then gestured them in a circle, hoping to indicate shopping in general. "-to look good on weekends, at least, but whenever I'm in class, nope, I look just like everyone else."
She then conceded, "I guess the Saint Mags uniforms aren't so bad compared to some of the other schools'. It's just that when you've worn them for more than a year every school day, they just get so boring, you know?."
Raven's teasing assessment of her boyfriend earned a light chuckle from Mayumi. "I was never a fan of long hair on guys." She stuck out her tongue playfully and added, "If he won't cut it, shave it off."
Cheerfully, she hooked her elbow with Raven's and briefly stepped close for a leaning sort of hug as they walked. "I missed you, too. Let's go get parfaits or something after we get your hairpins!"
