Hi all! Ixy here! No fancy banners or anything, just me announcing the...

NOVEL ACCOUNTABILITY GROUP

This thread is where you share your triumphs and your writer's-block woes, as well as any tips for overcoming the dreaded pen-stoppage. Don't forget it encourage your fellow authors... after all, someday it may be their book that you check out from the library!

Start off by talking about your novel. What's the general plot? You don't have to spoil the ending. Who are the main characters? What scene is your favorite?

I'll kick it off!

My novel's name is The School of Swords: Nightshade. It's about a young girl named Magda who has been orphaned since she was small. However, she is suddenly reclaimed by her next of kin, her aunt Seraphina, who is a councilor at a school of warfare named D'Mar. Assisting in her 'kidnapping' is a moody and generally dislikable guy named Falco (who has a sort of sense that helps him see 'true natures' and such) and an older woman named Martha. Other main characters include an eight-year-old boy named Mox (modeled after my brother) and her best friend Dove.

Though Magda generally just has a bad attitude, Seraphina is convinced something is wrong with her beyond this.

Though I've finished the story (and it's more... fleshed out than this sounds, honest), I'm not satisfied with a lot of it. So I'd love encouragement to get it edited and finished!

What about y'all?

Falco isn't dislikable! He's totally hot. ninja

Anyway. I guess my problem is that I don't have an idea for a novel, and every time I start one, I get about 30 pages in then give up because I feel like it's garbage. Bleh.

But currently, no ideas. How do you even think of plots and things? I mean I'm good at organizing role plays and such, but the whole idea is pretty...daunting.

One thing I heard which has really helped me is: NEVER throw away anything.

Keep it in a binder. Shove it under your bed. Then, a month or a year or whenever later you find it again, and the idea has marinated a little, try it again. If you still hate it, still keep it. But sometimes you get great ideas from ideas you've already had that failed previously.

Well, Ixxy, you know that we're working on a novel together....it's still untitled, though. We should work on that.

But, for those of you who don't know, we're working on a story about these people called the Fae....there are four different races of Fae: Earth, Fire, Water, and Air. The four main characters are Terra, an Earth Fae, Sol, a Fire, Marissa, a Water, and Aerial, an Air.

That's all I can think of to say right now.......

It can be daunting, Harx. But you just have to stick with it. That's why Ixxy made this thread....accountability is awesome...it helps you stick to it.

And when we finish our novel... MUAHAHA fame and fortune.

But ja, Harx. I know you rock at writing. Just be confident.

I know I'm new 'round these parts, and that I don't have much credibility because I've never tried for a novel past 30-some odd pages, but what I do when I write is just take the initial idea and see where the story leads me. Like, I take the roleplay idea, and I would set up a few basic characters and have their 'skeletons' made out, and then I would try to come up with something fitting for the character(s) to do to start out, that pertains to the plot/is engaging/fits the character, and then go from there. When you hit a snag, you reconfigure, but don't give up. Even if what comes to mind to do next is complete crap, literally your character(s) getting sick and taking a dump in the street/forest/car/nearest homeless man's cart, write it anyway, it could lead to something brilliant that brings the story around again, and from there you can always edit the crap (literal or figurative) out later. When it comes to long works of fiction, it's all about endeavoring to persevere.

M-D (can I call ya that?), you said you did Nanowrimo, didn't you? Even though I never make it all the way, since November is a finals' month, it's a good motivator, and you can come up with the weirdest, and sometimes best, ideas. I'm hanging onto my rewrite of Beauty and the Beast... I'm planning to finish it someday... after Nightshade. And school stuff.

Yeah, that's a pretty jazzy nickname, I can jive with that ;D And yes, I've done NaNoWriMo, but I did the Young Writers Program, so I set my own goal and matched it; 25,000 words! I ended up trashing my first idea, too. It may or may not have included the main character having conversations with her mother's girlfriend's breast implants...You're definitely right, weirdest ideas, most certainly! I hear they're doing two summer camp programs for NaNoWriMo too this year, one in June, the other August, or July, I think! Maybe we could try for that together here; I could totally use some actual support from people participating.

Good luck with your rewrite, I'm sure it'll come along once you have the time to actually sit down and have a come-to-jesus meeting with it xD Sorry, I just love that phrase, it makes me giggle so violently rofl
