Rider Name: I'an
Age: 29
Gender: Male
Sexual Orientation: Straight
Rank: Wingrider (Potential Candidate master)
History: I'an was born in Malvren Weyr. A weyrbrat, he grew up having little to call his own. Once every turn, his parents would send him small trinkets. Whether or not the firelizards delivering them showed up on his birthingday was another matter. He never really spoke to them, but did see them from a distance. He had enough of a relationship to acknowledge that they had given him life--otherwise, they were like any other rider in the Weyr. He respected them. Having from a young age a thirst to prove himself as the best in everything he did, when he did get to standing at the age of twelve turns, he firmly believed he would Impress a bronze. At least a silver! A crimson, perhaps.
Whatever color he might have anticipated, he certainly hadn't thought he would be left standing. He couldn't believe it. Though he had always been told that the dragons chose--surely it could be on his timing! He had planned reactions to Impressing. How could the dragons not see--? He stood again, same result. And again. And again. By the time he was sixteen turns, he had seen five hatchings. He was hesitant to stand again. His past failures seemed to speak volumes. His confidence had shrunk; there was no planning to be had. He walked onto the sands with his fellow candidates with uncertainty.
A self-fulfilling prophecy was left unfulfilled. Believing he would not Impress, I'an had attempted to stay close to friends during the hatching. He had difficulty watching others leave once they were claimed by their dragons. Surely he would be chosen this time?
Will a blue do? The voice in his head was whiny, angry--and hurt?
You have waited a long time, Ionan. I am Licerth! Will you feed me now? Or must I wait longer? With a hesitance that might have been noted by onlookers (and certainly was noticed by his dragon), he led Licerth to the table set out for the newly Impressed.
Looking back, I'an feels that he did most of his growing up as a Weyrling. He was no longer a candidate; and no longer could get away with causing small disruptions. He matured, though not quite a beacon of light to all others. He retained his flaws. He preferred assisting Weyrlings younger than he was. Having been born in the Weyr meant he understood some concepts enough that he could (if needed) assist someone who had recently come from a hold or hall. He enjoyed this time more than he would have believed as a younger boy.
That isn't to say he didn't cause his share of mischief. Oh, yes. I'an was not without mistakes. He gave the weyrfolk just as much trouble as any other Weyrling. He learned from it. From his experiences, he will be able to tell candidates and Weyrlings alike whether or not they should participate in such things. Often, he may mention how much trouble he got into. There is a time where his candidates may need to learn something for themselves; but he will attempt in all ways possible to prevent this. He will tell stories, and share punishments he endured as a boy.
I'an has been through his share of romantics. He hasn't really shared a relationship with any woman--but he desires it. He is content to charm and woo females until he finds the right one--or one Licerth approves of.
A close friend of I'an's nominated him for leadership. She believed he would make a fine candidatemaster. With all he did for the candidates already; with his spending his free time with them as often as he could, it wouldn't be too much of a change for him. Though he avoided responsibility whenever he could, he would be able to relate to them and share his own experiences. I'an, at first, was against the idea. Cleaning up after the candidates? He didn't fancy that! The position would give him the ability to spend the majority of his time with them. She nominated him due to the fact that when he did mysteriously disappear when he was supposed to be cleaning, he would be found assisting a candidate or instructing someone. Despite his claims, she believed he was responsible--in a different sense.
Description:I'an is slender in build, and of medium height. His hair is often found falling into his eyes when he's forgotten to comb it back. This, however, is rare. Though I'an is still a young man, he seems to possess the need to share his finery (for viewing purposes only, no touching please!). When not participating in drills, when not spending long hours bathing his blue, he may be found fixing his hair, fussing over his dragon's hide, anything to make them look better. Brushing off dust from his trousers. Picking stray hair from his tunic. The thing that may stand out most about I'an is--that he's clean.
He's not an especially handsome man, being average in height, and too slender in build for some tastes. I'an has a narrow, pointed face that makes his brown eyes appear larger, framed by thick lashes. His hair is a soft golden brown, and sometimes hides his eyes from view. Freckles lightly line his nose (which turns upward) and cheeks.
He may dress elaborately. He certainly has the appearance of someone who foolishly spends all their marks on his clothing--when it comes to I'an, he has no "best gather tunic".
Personality: I'an is an impossibly egotistical bluerider. When using the word 'egotistical' when concerning I'an, it isn't meant that he believes he's talented. He
knows he is. See how well he can dance! How he charms the ladies! How well Licerth flies! Surely that reflects upon his rider! Whether it be something I'an's done for turns--or something he's just decided to try, he
will be the best at it. (If he feels he is not; if he has failed at a task he set out to do, if he lost a bet gambling concerning what egg contains what color; expect a loud, cacophonous event in which he bemoans his flaws and carries on about how he should have done better. He may perhaps, during this time, seek out those he believes will praise his work.)
I'an is an active sort. He seems to enjoy racing about, appearing busy even if he is not currently. He will, however, always find something to be busy about. Whether it be bathing Licerth or gently instructing a candidate on how to properly peel tubers, I'an is unlikely to be caught standing still.
Oh, he moans and groans about duties with the rest of them! I'an, though careful about his appearance, prefers to hand cleansing duties to other riders. He doesn't want to clean; he has more important things to do. He wants nothing more than to be able to spend time with the younger set. When not conversing with weyrlings and candidates, he prefers to keep to himself. This bluerider is often quiet. Unless someone provokes him into speaking; and they may be surprised when they manage it. I'an can be long winded, hoping to bore those around him enough that they will go away; there may be some truth in the blather, but he hopes those who listen won't be clever enough to piece those truths together. Not exactly shy, he is pleasant around those he feels he can relate to; and spending the majority of his free time with candidates and the younger Weyrlings, he is most likely to confide in one of them.
You never want to give I'an marks and ask him to specifically purchase certain items. This bluerider has a tendency to believe he has found something the purchaser would like more than what they originally requested. Did someone ask for a redfruit? He found bubblypies for the same price! He has little moneysense. Instead of perhaps saving a large amount, he will spend marks on clothing. He intends to help others when asked, but may not always be so successful in doing so.
I'an delights in the company of women. Oh no, no, he wouldn't set a bad example for his companions; those younger than he. I'an (unless caught after Licerth's flown a green) is particularly chaste. He seems to take great care in choosing his words when speaking to women. He can be tactful and charming; but he will leave a lady's side at the first sign of tears. How awkward! I'an is not comfortable witnessing emotional displays. He may attempt to comfort those he is close to, awkwardly. He will not ask what happened, no. He will not try to guess. When cracking jokes in hopes to catch a glimpse of a smile fails, he may offer a number of other things up to and not excluding; a short trip around the Weyr on Licerth, a warm bubblypie...
I'an delights in gossip. Not spreading it, hearing it. Spending time with candidates and Weyrlings means he will be hearing much of the Weyr's gossip. Count on I'an to know if there's a blossoming romance between two candidates, or which green the Weyrlings think will rise first. If he will share this information--well, that would be telling, wouldn't it? Tending to be silent unless provoked or in the company of his chosen group, I'an hears many things. If he feels the information he gleans from the word-twisted rumors is important, he will report it promptly.
I'an is a caring sort, if one can get past his distant behavior when first getting to know him. He is kind to the candidates, at times helpfully telling them how they could make their chores pass by faster--how they could improve. Though he does not dote, and perhaps will not assist anyone if they did something terribly dimglowed. If he himself catches them causing mischief, he will have little trouble providing a list of things for the troublemaker in question to do. He encourages independance. If he was there to help them constantly, if he did not correct them of their wrongdoings, he feels they would rely on him too heavily when they graduated.
Despite his cool exterior towards other riders, when it comes down to it, I'an blossoms when around candidates. He can relate better to them, it seems, with their desires to skiff off responsibilities; with their tendencies toward pranks and getting into untold amounts of trouble. He enjoys spending time with them, helping them--telling them stories of his own candidancy. He may not be able to always help them with their emotional needs, but can be supportive in his attempts to make them smile.
Other: Dragon Name: Licerth
Age: 13
Colour: Blue
Description: CC. Below average build, below average size. Would prefer a brighter blue.
Personality:Licerth is a malcontent. It is difficult to get him to show outward signs of approval, though inwardly he may admit to himself the value of something or someone's varying opinion. From the moment he hatched no one was safe from his snippiness and cutting wit; for despite his complaints Licerth is an excellent speaker. It's not uncommon for him to leave a conversation with the other dragon staring after him. Never argue with Licerth, because he can twist his words and the meaning of words. Beware!
On top of his attitude, Licerth is stubborn. When he makes his mind up about something, he sticks to it. Only his rider could convince him otherwise.
Physically he's easy to bully, but no one can best him in a challenge of wits and words (in his opinion!): he considers his mind to be his private domain and is jealously possessive of his right to have an opinion. He may have a terrible time making friends. For one thing, his first impression is almost always set as long as his memory lasts- if he decides he doesn't like you, it's best to wait until he forgets why he didn't like you in the first place. He's not malicious, despite the fact that he's unpleasant. Rather, he is almost always condescendingly amused and cynical: a patronizing critic observing the antics of lesser mortals from his elevated pedestal.
When Licerth does decide he likes someone, his unpleasantness becomes softer; but does not completely disappear. His friendship may be sincere, but that certainly won't show if he can help it! He will make hints about his affections; but this riddling dragon is a hard nut to crack. He takes great pride in being able to make hints concerning events and how he feels without others being able to guess what he means.
If as a hatchling Licerth was stubborn, as an adult he has mellowed down to a quiet slyness that seems to permeate the air around him. Only in the most tender moments with his rider does this aura leave him and reveal the love that he is capable of feeling. To all outsiders, meaning everyone but his I'an, Licerth may present an abrasive, somewhat obnoxious face. Wherever he goes, Licerth loves to stir up a bit of conflict - for entertainment purposes.
Not surprisingly, Licerth is unlikely to be a very popular dragon. Dragons who admire his talent, who praise him may in fact gain his affection. He does so like to be told he's nice! However, he will never show the same care and devotion that he shows his bonded to anyone else.
Any flights he joins will be for the thrill of the chase. His small size may allow him to outmaneuver other dragons and stay right on the tails of greens and crimsons. There is very little give and take in these relationships, however. He pays little to no attention to his flight mates before and after; if necessary he will attempt to drive them away.
Licerth is quite often entertained by the antics of his rider. Especially when it comes to I'an's relationships. While Licerth is abrassive and will rid himself from potential mates when not caught up in the wave of instinct that hits during a flight, I'an is the opposite. Licerth may tease I'an for his behavior--attempting to charm women, pah! A plain man with dirt colored hair... I'an is lucky human females do not rise to mate. There would be no end to Licerth's affectionate teasing.
Other: Props to you if you can name what I caught inspiration from!
List -
1. He preferred assisting Weyrlings younger than he was. Having been born in the Weyr meant he understood some concepts enough that he could (if needed) assist someone who had recently come from a hold or hall. He enjoyed this time more than he would have believed as a younger boy.
2. Though I'an neglects some responsibility, he genuinely cares for others (distance aside, as it doesn't come into play around candidates and weyrlings, with whom he feels he can relate best).
3. I'an will often compare his candidancy with those around him. He will attempt to use this to guide others. He will use his experiences both positive and negative to assist others.
