General debriefing: Witnesses reported incidents of a sighting of potentially a black dog in the remote woods of a neighbourhood in northern *YOU CHOOSE A CITY/LOCATION*. Local animals have been found mangled or missing. Dispose of the creature and return with a report of the occurrence.
* C class difficulty level (must have a team of three, at least one of them must be an intermediate trainee)

MECHANICS

* MECHANICS: RP assembling a team, as necessary, before heading towards the Lighthouse portal to request a portal to Survey Mission 3A. Once there, roll a 100-sided dice and match the roleplay to the results below, as well as any reactions. Players can continue rolling until any of the players roll a HALLOWEEN ENCOUNTER, in which case the BATTLE PHASE begins. See below for battle phase mechanics.
1- 20: You look around the scant neighbourhood, everything seems normal. You do notice how some of the fences, though they say "beware of dog", are lacking actual dogs in their yards.
21 - 40: You hit a rocky crossroad junction between two neighbourhoods and what seemed like an abandoned railway line. The crossroads center however, is bumpy and uneven, as if something was buried underneath it. If you decide to uncover it, you find odd enough, a silver tray with thick black ashes.
41 - 60: You notice that the signs, the neighbourhood stop signs and posts have all been painted and engraved with a strange symbol, a backwards arced spiral. They line up almost eerily against each other as far as you can see.
61 - 80: You see something from the corner of your eyes, a black fleeting shadow. As you turn around, you notice that this entire neighbourhood is lacking in any residents
81- 100: BOSS ENCOUNTER:
- You spot a large black dog, larger than any you've seen: in fact, it is nearly the size of a horse. Its form seems to waver in and out of existence, though upon spotting you, it solidifies, ready to attack.
- BOSS MECHANICS: This boss has 50 HP. Every time you attack it (following the general battle rules), you TAKE 8 damage. Make sure to tally the boss's total HP (the damage you did to it) at the bottom of your post as well as your total HP and the damage you did that round. If the boss's HP hits 0, you have defeated it, and your team can now take the portal back.

Normally, Madison would have been overjoyed to visit Lake Tahoe - but nothing about her life was remotely normal any more. The mission assignment bleeped on her phone, insisting on a reply. She had a job to due, and none of it involved skiing, gambling, or anything remotely fun...

We might get to bite something! That would be fun, Kouki insisted. Madison chose to ignore that. Instead, she paged through the names on her phone. Usually, she'd ping her Phoenixes, but... this time, she had to lead. And if Jordan were there, she'd naturally defer to his judgement. And she didn't trust Robert within twenty miles of a casino, Ennea wasn't answering her calls, and she had a hard time imagining Petra without Robert...

The decision was spontaneous. Candace... well, they'd had a good time shopping, right? Even under the influence of Joy? And Cass... Madison had admired her style of work. Girl time. It sounded like an excellent idea. Too bad it was off to investigate murders instead of getting manicures.

She quickly sent the texts off with the mission details; at the appointed time, she headed to the portal to meet with the other girls. They'd solve this. How could they not?

Well, well, well! This was a name she hadn't gotten a message from before!

Cass would have let the message go unnoticed due to being in the gym if Nicodemus hadn't been inclined to tell her that her phone had beeped at her. The trainee leaned back over the weight bench to grab the phone out of the front pocket of her bag.

Message from Madison

You should go, Cassandra. I would imagine that this would be a much more productive use of time on the books for when promotions roll around again.

<>

Yes

It had been an easy enough decision, and it had left Cass with enough time to take a quick shower to get the sweat funk off of her, try her hair off, and then get her uniform on to head off towards the portal for the meet up, a small bounce in her step. They got to go see interesting stuff and she'd get to have some nice ol' girltime.

Candace was in the Life labs..actually doing some kind of work. It had kind of bothered her that people kept getting on her case about how much time she spent in the Life labs without actually doing any work. Well here she was! Sitting at a computer watching different kinds of fighting techniques she could use. Did Dwight often make training videos? Geeze. He had an addiction.

She was interrupted by a text from..oh hey! Madison? What did she want. She paused the video and read it over, making an excited little noise when she got to the point. A mission! She'd love to! She sent a text back in reply letting Madison know she was on her way, heading for her room to grab her supply pack before heading for the lighthouse portal.

Plus...local animals, huh? This sounded like when Robert had taken her and Jordan to New York because of the stolen animals. Perhaps this was related? It'd make sense, though it was way off from New York.

"Yo~." Candace called out as she approached the Madison and Cass. This would be interesting, she'd never done an external mission with the two of them before. "Been awhile, Madison!" She grinned, happy to see her. Madison had been the first person in a long while to make Candace feel like a woman in December. It'd been an amazing day. Of course she wanted to see her again!

Madison couldn't help but be relieved when both Cass and Candace actually showed up; she didn't know either girl that well, Cass hardly at all. "Thanks for coming," she said, that relief audible in her voice. "I, um... this one's in the Lake Tahoe area. California side? I went there once when I was pretty little. In the summer, though... I did some research. It's chilly and a little snowy, but not much on the ground. Drought, and stuff." Probably good, after the North Pole mission and the entirety of Christmas, she didn't really want to see snow any more.

And now she was out of awkward stuff to say, so instead she gestured at the portal. It had already been keyed in, just waiting for them. "Ready to go?"

Upon stepping through, the girls would find themselves standing on a paved mountain road, with tall spindly pines stretching up around cabin-style houses. The only snow on the ground was muddy and pathetic scrapings on the side of the road, the asphalt streaked with mud and faintly crunchy with the remains of salt - but the sky above was gray, the tops of the trees swaying in the wind. A storm was coming, and there was a cold, fresh snap in the air that meant more snow. Good for the ski resorts. Not so good for them.

"We're looking for a black dog, something that's been going after game. And pets," Madison repeated, somewhat redundantly since all that information had been in the texts she'd sent earlier.

"That's some pretty good recon, Mad." Cass said, already assigning the girl a nickname. "Nice to have even a small heads up on where we're going before we go." Even if sometimes she wished Caelius actually told them something instead of just 'Hi, u is gonna die heer' that tended to be his normal fare of 'this is what is going down' spiel.

Either way, she was ready to go the second she'd gone out the door, stepping through the portal after Madison. The scenery was kind of a pleasant change to Cass, having somehow always ended up in dark dreary and overheated places or the hustle and bustle of some city when going out that the outdoor air was pleasant to her. Sure the island was scenic in a similar manner, but this was different - the atmosphere was much more liberating.

Even if the snow was a bit nasty. It slid slightly underneath her boots, and Cass made a mental note to be careful to not slide around in it.

"A black dog? Wait...pets......" Cass seemed to be making a mental connection - was this in anyway related to the incident in New York? Still, she looked around quickly and then immediately drew still, reaching out for both Madison and Candace's sleeves, giving them a tug.

"Guys." Her voice was quiet, as to try and not draw undue attention, and looking would prove why - Cass had already spotted it. Massive, black, flickering.... and when it realized Cass's eyes were on it, it seemed to stabilize, whirling its head around to look back at them.

"I've never been here before, it sounds interesting." Candace said with a smile, glad to hear of the research Madison had done. She seemed more suited for Death than Life. It was a good thing she'd been transferred! She deserved it. "Yeah, I'm good to go." She replied before following Madison and Cass through the portal.

It was always interesting to step out into new areas on the other side of a portal. She never knew what to expect.

For example: One does not expect to walk right into a gigantic ******** horse of a black dog.

"You've got to be kidding me." Candace sighed, summoning Atropos. "Well...let's take care of it quickly so we can continue our investigation." She wanted to see if this had any relation to the animals in New York. Candace was quick to hurry in, gliding over the ground until she was close enough to jump. She lifted her leg in the air and brought it back down, striking the dog's back with the talon on Atropos' heel. It let out a pained howl and bit down on the woman's arm as she tried to move away, tossing her aside like a doll.

Oh what. Madison swore under her breath and summoned Kouki in a flare of light. That was the shortest damn investigation ever, but it wasn't because they were amazing at their jobs-

The black dog threw back its head and howled, the sound strangely toned, as if multiple faint canine voices were joining in. Then it lunged at her, jaws snapping; she dodged, but not fast enough. The beast's teeth missed her but the swing of its head was more than powerful enough to knock Madison off her feet.

Still, that meant the dog's head was at close range. As she fell, Madison swung both arms not to regain her balance but to slice into the creature's head, blades biting into the monster's ear and head. It yelped and jerked away, but the damage was done - one ear nearly severed from the head, deep cuts in the flesh below.

She fell hard, then twisted and came up with both swords crossed in front of her. "Candace! You okay?"

"Yeah, I'm good! Just a bite, I'm fine." Not like it was venomous or anything. Candace went at it again, this time sliding across the ground with a leg extended out and her foot pointed. This seemed to be a move she did at least once every battle; take out the enemies legs while protecting her own.

The dog gave a pained yelp as its legs buckled underneath it and it stumbled, whining and swiping at Candace with one of its clawed paws.

"s**t, that thing is huge." Cass commented - quite obviously, but it was one of those expressions that couldn't be stopped from surprise as she ran towards it, shifting her weight in the snow and digging Nicodemus deeply into the creature. It hissed in pain, whipping its head back before it turned one paw onto Cass, swiping and biting, even as she pulled back, bringing Nicodemus back with her and sliding in the snow.

"Damn, this isn't the best of conditions to be fighting in." she hissed, panting as her FEAR shield knitted over itself, spreading the weight out over her skin. Nicodemus had her covered, but she'd only be taking so many blows like that.

"Could be worse. Could be a blizzard," Madison managed. The tail swished towards her, thick as a tree trunk; she jumped just a few seconds too soon, and it swatted her feet out of the air, sending her tumbling to the ground hard. She gasped, fighting to breathe as the wind rushed out of her, rolling to one side- and there was the dog looming over her, paws braced on either side.

She didn't so much act consciously as react on reflex, driving both swords up into the soft belly arcing overhead. The monster reared backwards with a sharp cry, and she lunged out from underneath it as quickly as she possibly could. It was really hurting now. "We can take it down!"

Cass moved to strike the beast again when it whirled around and struck her down, causing the mist trainee to literally go flying. She probably would have hit it harder, except flying was sort of a task that required all of her attention.

She hit the ground with a sickening 'CRUNCH' and went rolling.

She tried!!

Candace laughed. "At least I know how to use Atropos in snow. Not so good with rocky terrain." Something she would need to work on, obviously.

Madison and Cass did a good job pissing it off. The dog's attention was on them, which Candace took thorough advantage of. She jumped again, this time aiming a blade right above the dog's neck and..SLICE! The blade cut cleanly through the black dog's neck, the beast's head falling to the ground though not before giving one swipe directed at the woman and sending her away.

As her weapon blade connected with the neck of the creature, a thick black liquid began to spray out, a burst of putrid, vicious blood that splattered all over Candace. Though she didn't drop her weapon, as the second slice bit deeper, so did the blood, until she was all but covered in it, the acid burning through her fear shield and her skin. Moments later the entire body dissipated into raw fear. Atropos purred with delight, her gems pulsating with bright light. Delicious. Candace chuckled. That was much better than the last few battles. Atropos purred again. It was. Good job, Candace. A shame you killed it though. We could've had one more taste.

"Greaaaaat. Atropos is all charged up and I've got nothing to use her on. She'll be so pissed if I don't give her some kind of release." Candace frowned, looking down at her feet. s**t. "I'm sorry.." She said as she unsummoned her weapon, wincing at the unhappy shriek that rang through her head. I'msorryI'msorry!

"Okay, so..now that we've gotten the dog out of the way let's see if we can find anything?"

Madison relaxed as the dog tore itself apart and vanished, leaving behind only a foul scent in the air. "Nice," she said, "and yeah, Kouki's about to be pretty pissed too." True to form, the serpent-sword was hissing grumpily as she sheathed the blades, though she did not unsummon the weapon just yet. "Maybe we can find some evidence about how or why that thing was here..."

The tall, thin pine trees rattled in the wind, and a few fresh flakes were starting to drift down from the clouds. Madison pulled her coat around herself a bit more tightly and started slowly walking down the road, peering this way and that. It occurred to her, belatedly, that people could have seen them flailing at the air with swords and guns and things, but there was no indication of alarm from the closest cabins. Hrm.

Her boots crunched against the asphalt as she walked along. There was a crossroads up ahead, two streets and an out of service railroad crossing, old icicles dangling from the crossbars. Something about it felt weird, though. As Madison crossed over the tracks, the ground rose and fell under her feet.

"... I think something's here. Underneath," she said, crouching and running her fingers over the rise in the road. It didn't feel like a railroad tie. The road here was scuffed and cracked as if it had been removed and then put back haphazardly. She felt at the cracks with her fingertips until she found purchase, then lifted a palm-size chunk of asphalt out of the way. "What the..."

There was something under there - a slab of... metal? Something silvery, and no, it wasn't a slab. It was a tray...? Okay, a tray, its surface smeared thickly with black ashes that didn't seem like the kind of thing you'd get out of a normal, friendly fireplace. "The hell?"

((So what happens if we roll the boss again? Do we just ignore it and roll again since we're data collecting for completeness?))

"Hopefully it takes a while to respawn...." Cass grumbled as she got up, wincing as she put her weight into her non-dominant arm. Damn, that thing was sore. She could already see a bruise forming along it - but again, Nicodemus reassured her that he was already on it, the hunter getting up and brushing the slick snow-snot off of her as she desummoned the weapon, the chain reforming around her waist as she moved to start walking along after Madison.

"Still, that thing was just nasty." she frowned, her body sore from the smackdown it had tried to dish out. Damn, her coat looked completely gross, she'd have to fix that in the future...maybe. Still, as she looked around, she noticed a familiar sign, frowning at it as she stepped back to take in the same 'lining up' shape it seemed to do.

"Okay, I have seen this sign all over the place, guys. This...inversed spiral thing. I swear I saw it in Las Vegas, and even before that I took Sydney and Ami out to a farmhouse and they had it underneath the beds too.

This is getting kind of annoying. It has to mean something. Is this a 'Something was here' symbol for some group of something?"

((I think if we roll the boss again we have to Strife again, but can flee from it. ))
