The sun had just risen and was beginning to warm the land. Sakura stood in its weak rays, stretching out her neck and enjoying the feel of the cool air upon her neck. The chill of the night had not quite faded, but it was not an unpleasant cold. Instead, it felt fresh. Her chest expanded as she inhaled a deep breath. The forest was light, though the sky was a cloudy shade of grey overhead. This type of day had a strange beauty to it, one that required a certain mood in order to appreciate it. It was neither freezing cold, nor unbearably hot. It was simply... new. The forest felt new.

She turned to look back behind her, to peer briefly into the cave where she made her home. Her expression softened as she thought of her son, Blair, sleeping soundly inside. Her other son was away with Adrian. She felt a prickle of worry, her eyebrows furrowing slightly at the thought. Her trust in Adrian was complete, but it still troubled her to be away from her children. It was a fair agreement though, he deserved to spend time with his sons too. Not that they knew that their great Uncle Adrian was their father.

Besides, this way she got to spend some better time alone with Blair. Her ears pivoted forwards as she smiled. What would today be filled with? Chasing butterflies? Hide and seek? Well, she wouldn't have long to wait to find out. No doubt he would be up soon.

The most pleasant thing about sleeping was that it was always comfortably warm. It did not matter if there were nightmares that woke one in the middle of the night with a start; there was still heat through the cold sweat brought on by the sheer terror of it all. Unfortunately the warm that was almost constantly beside him while he slumbered was no longer there and the little colt shivered softly in the vacant space where his mother had been not too long ago. It wasn’t that he was cold, because it wasn’t terribly frosty. It was simply that his body had become less warm.

Ashen eyes opened slowly and Blair yawned widely before he stretched his sleep stiffened limbs. He had been having the most pleasant dream about chasing a rabbit through a field of tickling flowers. It wasn’t the most normal dream, but anyone that said dreams were meant to be normal was a liar. His tail flicked behind him as he eyed around the modest home that he, his brother and mother shared. It was nothing special, but it was home. The dark colt snorted loudly and shook loose what sleep had remained in his eyes before he ventured toward the mouth of the cave.

"Mommy…?" He peeked out of the mouth of the cavern cautiously, unsure if she was around. Sometimes she needed to go off quickly but she would always come back just as quickly. At those moments he was to stay inside until she returned. This morning was not one of those cases and he spotted her with no trouble. "Mommy…!" Excitement welled in his chest as he trotted from their home to her side and buried his face into her chest. "Good morning mommy!"

((I am so sorry for taking so long to reply. I actually cannot believe how unbelievably bad I have been Dx I apologise, I was super excited about this RP and all! I shall tag faster in the future, I promise!))

Sakura didn't have long to wait. As soon as the thought of Blair passed through her mind, his excited voice rang out through the chilly air, sending a rush of joy through the mare's body. "Blair!" He was already beside her, sending a massive grin spreading over her face. "Good morning, honey."

His warm face was pressed against her chest, sending her heart flittering with sheer happiness. She ducked her head towards him, gently nuzzling the flop of white hair that crowned his neck. "Did you sleep okay? Did you have any fun dreams?" Her voice was jovial, but her full attention was on her son, ready to listen to whatever strange fantasies had danced through his slumbering mind.

It was still hard to believe that this black-and-pink colt was truly her boy. What could she possibly have done to deserve such amazing, beautiful children? And he was growing so fast! It seemed like just yesterday this full-of-energy, lovable ball of fur was taking his first steps into the world. She snorted gently, eyes brimming with the full force of her love as she pressed the side of her face against his neck, holding him close to her body for just a moment.

(( It's not a big deal, really. I know that you have a lot going on for Sakura's Elder plots and stuff. And I was aware that you're a rather busy person when I walked into this. <3 ))

Eagerly the dark pelted colt leaned into his mother’s affections. They, his brother and him, had never known the warmth of their father but each enjoyed their mother’s very much. And he had decided that he couldn’t miss what he didn’t have, but he had decided something else as well. Should anything ever happen and his mother would have to go away for a long period of time, he would miss her warmth. When she smiled, her returned that smile brilliantly, happy that the sun was still shinning and that he would have some time with his mother today without having to compete for her attention with his brother.

"Oh!" He exclaimed shortly, suddenly excited and he stomped his hooves into the ground in an involuntary display. "Yes, I did!" He seemed almost embarrassed by his little outburst as he settled down, only slightly, and spoke in a softened tone. "Yes. Yes, I did. I had a dream I chased a little rabbit through a field of flowers." White brows furrowed as he tried to remember why it was he had chased the rabbit in the first place, there was a reason. Blair had the feeling that it had been for a very important reason, but the memory slipped away like water through a cracked tortoise shell. "I… don’t remember why though." This bothered him, but he shook it off. For now, it wasn’t important.

Grinning, the small boy returned his mother’s embrace, resting his little face against her neck. "What about you, mommy?" He whispered, gently mouthing stray pieces of her hair from her braid and pushing them back into their proper place. "Did you dream about anything?"

As the colt returned her smile, Sakura felt hers grow even wider until she was grinning like a mad mare. She lapped up his words like a cat with a saucer of cream, a happy humming rising from deep within her throat. "Chasing a rabbit? What a strange thing to do!" She chortled, almost jumping along with him as he stomped his hooves. "I'm sure in another dream, it'll all make sense again"

Her eyes grew wistful for a moment as she pondered his question. How could she tell her son that whilst he had blissfully slumbered, her own mind had refused to sink into the blissful depths of unconsciousness? That when she had finally fallen into a state of half-resting, images of the past had flickered underneath her eyelids, reminding her of other warm flanks that she had once rested upon? No, the past belonged to the past, she thought with a flicker of guilt. Yet how could she honestly say that when the past was the whole reason she was still in the same cave she had been born in?

Hardening her gaze, she thrust such musings away from her. Nothing would ruin her time now. Life was perfect, more than anything she could ask for. Why was she still clinging onto things that didn't matter anymore? "Dreams are fickle things." She said softly, lowering her own head to brush her teeth through Blair's pale mane, as he groomed her mane in turn. "And you know what? I can't seem to remember a single one of them! Isn't that silly?" She snorted softly, enjoying the texture of his soft colt-fur beneath her muzzle. It wasn't entirely a lie, she consoled herself. After all, those memories were hardly dreams concocted by her imagination.

Perhaps she was right and it would eventually make sense to him in another dream. The very thought seemed to please him and his tail swayed behind him, delighted. He really wanted to know why he had chased the rabbit in the first place, so he would have to wait. "I hope so." Murmured the colt in his soft voice.

He was very pleased with the work he had done in fixing his mother's plait, it looked just as lovely as ever. "Mo~ther." He whinnied softly before he laughed. "You know it's just going to be a mess again in only a few moments." Gently he pulled away and gazed up at his mother with wide eyes full of awe. She couldn't remember her dreams? Not a single one? Well, that really was silly! Who knew dreams could be more tricky than having forgotten why you were doing something. Dreams were so strange, they could just up and make themselves disappear from your head.

"I never knew that dreams could just-just disappear like that. That really is silly!" Blair leaned against his mother, almost as if he were comforting her. "It's okay, mommy. I'm sure that you'll remember it another time, right?"

Sakura gently nuzzled another hair back into place on his mane affectionately before allowing him to pull away from her. He was right of course, she had no doubts the colt would get it all tangled up again within minutes. But that didn't stop her from wanting to fuss all over him, her perfect little son. Being with him was the highlight of her day. Her brief flash of perfection. She really wanted nothing more from life than just to stay here forever, forgetting all her problems, just getting to spend time with her son. Now that would have been something to dream about, but Sakura knew it couldn't be so. He'd grow up and have to go and live his own life eventually, she couldn't ever hold him back from that. Not to mention her own life lurked just over the horizon, all her fears and doubts.

For now though, those could cease to exist. For the moment. For the hour. For the next few months. She could hope. She could lose herself in the moment. Her mind threw itself back into the present as Blair leaned against her flank again. She let out a laugh, nuzzling him gently with her nose. "Oh you bet I will! Dreams are like that. They come and go, and some make sense and some don't. Sometimes you only remember bits of them. They are the silliest things ever."
