Lesedi had spent the last few days thinking about his disastrous first attempt at joining the Vikings and he had decided the dark lion he’d fought on that day was on his mind more often than he liked. Remembering his mistakes and Ru’s abilities in equal terms, the green-eyed lion kept reviewing the previous match on his head over and over again.

It didn’t take long for him to recover from the fight as the dark lion’s blows hadn’t been particularly deep… the ones he’d landed before he’d managed to fit Lesedi’s neck so nicely between his fangs. Lesedi growled, still fairly annoyed at the whole thing. Now was not the time to think about his defeat! He was at the pride’s border once again, looking for a rematch and this time he’d play things differently.

“Oi, anyone here?” he asked the wind, wondering how quickly it would take to get a reply. Maybe he’d get one quicker if he used that odd Viking greeting. “Today, I will kill you.” Wait, that didn’t sound right.

Ru looked down from his perch, surveying the obvious approach to the pride below. He had never told anyone, not even Kazul, but he didn't like extreme heights like the ones on the cliffs that Kazul so loved. Since coming to the pride he had quickly learned that such a fear was not one to be spoken of and so he'd worked to combat it, perching whenever the opportunity presented itself despite the discomfort it brought him to do so.

The approach of a lion he had already fought once before was a welcome distraction, for although his perch was not so very high, it was high enough to give him a slight sensation of vertigo to look straight down. It was weakness to let himself off so easily, perhaps, but this was a challenge, and so it was only to be expected that he would meet it. There was no shame in that.

"And whose death are you plotting?" he asked, dropping from his perch to the rocky ground below without actually landing on any of the rocks that could so easily bruise the pads of his paws, despite the thick calluses building up on them. "Mine? Good luck with that."

There he was, the same dark lion from before. Lesedi could feel his throat itching at the mere sight of him. About the same size and age as himself. Unusual tolerance to pain, if he remembered correctly. It was hard to contain the excitement that took over him in that moment but he remained in place, determined not to repeat the mistakes from the last fight. It was not like him, one so used to push through by simply using brute force and relying on luck.

“You, again. Good. I was hoping for that.” The spotted lion lowered his head as his body tensed up in anticipation of the fight that would soon start. “Do you have a name?”

It wasn’t really like to ask for someone’s name. But the dark lion had defeated him in a fair fight and that earned him some respect in Lesedi’s eyes. He would the name of the lion he was about to beat up, after all.

"Should I be flattered?" Ru asked. Because secretly he was. This would be the first time he had faced an opponent returning to try their luck against him for a second time in their askorun. That he had made such an impression couldn't be anything but good.

He licked his lips and continued, pacing a little bit without being so gauche as to cross behind the tawny lion who had already lost once to him. He was content to move back and forth within his opponent's view and let him get a look at how fit he was, and how unconcerned he was about the upcoming fight.

"Are you asking for my name so that you can specifically request my attention whenever you come seeking pain and humiliation?" he continued. "I admit, I am good at inflicting pain and exacting humiliation, but I have better things to do with my time than wait around for you to come seeking me."

He grinned, enjoying the sham he was acting out. In truth, he would not have the least problem being called upon just for the act of hurting others, but he would prefer to do so with a certain female nearby so that he could also deal with the other feelings pain stirred in him.

"Still. If I'm available, I suppose you could tell whatever lion you meet in these lands that you're looking for Ruzanski."

A low growl rumbled within Lesedi’s chest as the dark lion spoke but he grinned, the fire of competition burning in his eyes. Pain and humiliation? He would make him eat those words! Or better yet, he would make him feel them instead!

“Just curious.” His voice was low, barely a whisper this time but it quickly grew in volume and confidence as she continued. “Ruzanski. I am Lesedi. It will end differently today.”

He was determined to achieve a favorable outcome this time. With a roar, the spotted lion’s back leg pushed heavily against the ground and propelled Lesedi towards the dark Viking, one paw with unsheathed claws ready to deliver the first blow, another guarding his neck and chest.

Lesedi. Hm. Ru supposed he would probably want to remember the name. The lion was determined to win his way into the Stormborn, it seemed, and someday he might have the good sense to face someone he could beat. So at some point Ru would probably have to address him as a brother Stormborn. It might be nice if he could do so by name.

"We'll see," Ru said with a quick smirk.

Ru wasn't quite sure what to make of the unusual mode of attack Lesedi chose to employ in his charge. One paw extended and the other tucked to his chest. was he injured? What kind of moron got into this sort of fight with an injury?

A more honorable lion would have inquired, or at least avoided striking the potentially injured limb, but Ru had learned most of his fighting skills from the Stormborn, and they only afforded honor to their own, and Lesedi was not yet one of them. Thus, Ru twitched to the side and made the paw Lesedi had drawn back his target, seeking it with his teeth and the intent to worsen whatever damage had already been done.

Lesedi’s paw was guarding the neck that had once been caught by the dark lion and not so much of a threat as the one who was aiming for Ru’s face. As such, he hadn’t really expected to have to protect it, on the contrary but in the end it mattered little whether Ruzanski was aiming for his neck or the paw before it. In a rare moment of clear thought, Lesedi decided what to do in a spit second. He would allow his paw to be grabbed and in that same instant grab the dark lion’s head with his other paw and with his maw latch himself into whatever piece of Ru’s head he could get. Well, that was the plan, at least.

His roar betrayed the pain Lesedi felt as his paw was took the hit – he honestly hadn’t expected it hurt so much – and in that moment, he made his move.

Ru's blood sang as Lesedi's teeth caught on his ear but didn't latch on quite enough to do more than nick the edge. Well. That would be a permanent mark, but it wasn't something to bother him. He was more likely to be distracted bu that sharp, sweet burst of pain. His eyes flashed greener with it and his heart beat harder in his chest.

He was not aiming for Lesedi's throat or chest though. Just the paw protecting them. Paws were such delicate things, with so many tiny parts that went crunch, after all. A good bite could mangle or maim a lion permanently if it crushed the right bones and severed the right tendons.

Ru recalled just as his teeth closed around the paw that he was not supposed to cripple his opponent, but he did not release the captive extremity. He simply didn't tighten his bite on it. That was something of a challenge, with his head being once again under attack and Lesedi's free paw stretched to slash him.

So that he could do more than worry at Lesedi's paw, Ru pushed forward, perhaps trying to overbalance his opponent, who could only make use of three limbs to full effect at the moment anyway. At the same time he made use of his own forepaws to try to dig into Lesedi's shoulders to control any fall the spotted lion might suffer, which was as much for Lesedi's protection as anything. Tearing his paw out of Ru's jaws at this point would probably not turn out well for him.

Lesedi groaned when he realized how utterly pointless his attack had been. Ears bled a lot but ear injuries didn’t hurt that much – and he knew from experience that pain didn’t really bother this particular opponent all that much. What was worse, the paw that should’ve been ready to strike the moment Ruzanski’s mouth neared it, had actually been caught in the dark lion’s jaws. That actually scared Lesedi more than a mouthful of teeth around his throat had before. A lion with a crippled paw was a lion who couldn’t hunt, couldn’t survive on his own. It meant the worst kind of ungracious and slow death in existence.

Lesedi struggled to keep his balance as Ruzanski pushed forward which was no easy feat considering the Viking was still holding his paw. In the end when he was already trembling with the effort, he started falling backwards – his paw still tightly held in the dark lion’s mouth!
As he finished his eerily slow descent and ended up once again with his back against the ground, he kept trying to grab something more substantial or at the very least use his remaining paw to give more effective blow to Ru’s head. His shoulders hurt and his paw was still in the most vulnerable position possible but Lesedi kept fighting the inevitable with all he had, hoping he could grab something that would force Ruzanski to let go of his limb.

Lesedi's claws hurt, but not enough to worry Ru, which meant he took no steps to avoid the pain or the claws that inflicted it. In fact, if Lesedi could have seen Ru's expression he might have been confused, uncomfortable, or both. The dark lion's eyes were bright and glossy as though feverish or aroused. Such was the effect of the pain blazing from Lesedi's attacks and the blood in his mouth.

Speaking would have been impossible with Lesedi's paw in his mouth, but Ru wanted to warn him that if he didn't submit soon, there would be some serious damage done there. Striking Ru around the head and neck was not making it any easier for the reaver to avoid causing permanent damage, for reasons of control if nothing else.

Unable to formulate words properly, he growled low and rumbly, the sort of growl that was usually meant as a warning. Sort of like Ru was saying, "I'm here and you should be careful," as he sought to draw Lesedi's attention to his predicament. Just in case he somehow wasn't aware, as perhaps he might not have been, as gravity could be distracting when it took effect.

In the instant before they hit the ground, Ru released Lesedi and panted, "Give up. I could've maimed you."

He should give in. That much was obvious even before Ru had pointed it out to him. But Lesedi was… well, a bit of an idiot. A frustrated idiot. Young and overly proud, he couldn’t believe he’d lost to the same lion twice! And he had to consider – probably because he wasn’t able to see the dark lion’s expression – that Ruzanski was actually a rather patient lion. If their roles had been reversed, Lesedi knew he would probably have already broken a few bones in Ru’s paw, had the dark lion been acting the way he was at the moment.

“You win. Again.” He said after one brief pause where he’d ceased all movement. He was panting though not much…. Because he wasn’t really that tired! Oh, he felt like roaring his anger out for all the world to hear! It had ended too quickly, far too quickly. The dark lion had been too fast, read the battle too well. And in the end, Lesedi had lost… again. “But I’ll return…Ruzanski.”

There was obvious anger as he said the dark lion’s name but there was also a hint of respect in there. In his mind, he was thinking how the dark lion could've already killed him twice had he wanted to.

Ru was relieved that Lesedi had realized the fight was over, and had not attempted to continue it when Ru released his paw. Ru could taste his blood on the tips of his teeth if he ran his tongue over the sharp points, but he resisted the urge. For now.

He still couldn't believe how easy that had been, comparatively. This match had ended much more quickly, and Ru didn't know if it was because Lesedi had been careless, or if there was something else. Perhaps the paw tucked up had been a ploy that hadn't gone over as planned.

"You gave me an obvious opening to exploit," Ru explained. "If you let your opponent do that, and actually allow them to get a grip on you with their teeth, there's not too much you can do."

The advice was the best he could think to give. There was potential in Lesedi, or at least determination, and Ru thought he would probably manage well among the Stormborn, though not to the point where he was willing to lose to give him the chance to find out. Upon hearing Lesedi's vow to return Ru smirked and said in an undertone, "I expected nothing less."

It was with a deep sense of humiliation that Lesedi stood up this time, his mind reviewing the moment his paw had been caught – the decisive moment of the short fight – over and over again.

“It did not go as planned.” Because he’d had a plan, even if he hadn’t manage to make it work as he’d expected. Now he didn’t really feel like explaining it to Ru or blabbering excuses like an idiot. He’d never been a gracious winner but losing didn’t suit the young lion either. He felt even younger next to Ruzanski now, greener and a little silly, too. But he took the dark lion’s words and little smirk without displaying much emotion. “Till next time.” Lesedi turned to leave and, if he were to dismiss a few small piercing wounds on his shoulders, completely uninjured. That, perhaps, was what annoyed him most of all.
