DAILY STATUS EFFECT

DAILY STATUS EFFECT MARCH 11TH TRIALS CONCLUSION PART 1:

The kraken left very few castles alive: and even those that survived looked ready to fall apart any second, hanging on by their bare foundations. At last, seconds, minutes, hours later, the attack receded, as each tentacle, even the beaten and bludgeoned ones, retreated back into the ocean.

A moment of silence and then:

"All participants and spectators! The Trials of Famine portion is now closed and judging has commenced! All spectators can now take a thirty minute break before they will be promptly ask to return to their seats for the scoring results. All students in the trials will be returned to their regular - ahem - size and may also walk around, pat each other on the backs, and of course, assess the damage. Be mindful as you walk around of the judges that are looking at each structure. Don't forget to buy some last minute refreshments before you leave, now half prize until the end of the hour!"

True to the announcer's words, the students thankfully, found themselves returned rather happily to their normal compact humanoid forms. From their size, the damage to their castle looked even more abysmal: in fact it was a miracle that some of the structures even stood. That really, only a scant few structures stood.

OOC: REMAINING DAMAGE TALLY

- IF YOUR SANDCASTLE REMAINS STANDING, but you are out of turns and the kraken's HP is not at 0, before it left, its tentacle swings one particularly nasty blow as your castle simply COLLAPSES (INSTANT KO)! If you have a sea turtle you can save your castle, but unfortunately a pearl does nothing.

OOC: ALL

SPECTATORS:
- ALL SPECTATORS CAN NOW WALK AROUND and talk to the participants (By visiting any thread in this subforum marked OPEN). IF the thread is marked CLOSED, please do not enter it! Also please note which characters are entering an EXITING the thread. IF you are ENTERING the thread, please post at the top in bold, if you are EXITING the thread please do so as well. Make sure to quote whomever you are talking to!

TRIALS PARTICIPANTS:
- A few of you have survived three waves of onslaughts, though many of you have persevered to try your best! Congratulations! An overall tally will be made tomorrow, and points and rankings will be giving out ICly for each group. This will determine the advantage they get in the next Trials
- The next trials will not ICly be happening until MARCH 13TH 2012, so participants please take a few days to take a break, stretch, and enjoy that OOC world. I will post results tomorrow, once again, to which your student can post a reaction to IN THE SPECTATOR THREAD.
- After results have been posted, all TRIALS threads other than the SPECTATOR ONE will be closed off and archived to make way for the next Trials.
- At this point in time, students are welcome to show off the... remains (or not!) of their castle or wander around to see others. Simply post OPEN to open your thread to visitors, and EXIT and ENTER threads as you need to!
- IF YOUR CASTLE SURVIVED, PLEASE MAKE SURE TO EDIT THE FIRST POST OF YOUR THREAD AS IN BOLD RED SOMEWHERE: THE REMAINING HP VALUE OF YOUR CASTLE.
- ALL OTHER THREADS PLEASE UPDATE THE FRONT POST OF YOUR THREAD WITH THE REMAINING HP VALUE (0) OF YOUR CASTLE THANK YOU.
- IF team members have not rolled yet, subtract -5 HP from your kraken AND YOUR CASTLE for EACH time the team member did NOT roll. Apply the result, do the damage to your castle as necessary and update the first post with the FINAL HP.

Taryn stood on the beach, her hands defiantly placed on her hips. She was an image of unusual confidence for her usual manner, and she surveyed her team with pride. They were here too win, regardless of how silly the challenge seemed. It would be glorious.

"As you may have noticed, we did not solve the pre-trial puzzle correctly," she began, "We haven't received any bonuses, or any special recognition, but I we have no reason to be disappointed." Wait, what? Oh, Jack, inspirational speech incoming!

"What we failed to do was translate a convoluted cipher. What we have succeeded in doing is proving ourselves otherwise. Allow me to explain." The ghoul began to gesture as she spoke, making eye contact with each team member in turn. "What we've proven, is that we function as a team. We're capable of coming to a conclusion under the pressure of time, under the stress of the situation. Whether said conclusion was correct doesn't matter. What does solving a puzzle have to do with coming of age? What does it have to do with strength, or even intelligence? Colors and numbers, it's all irrelevant. We're not here to take handouts from the Horsemen. What the others 'won' was an easier path through the trials. What does that prove?!"

Taryn was growing louder and more animated with each word. She needed to drive this point home. She needed them to realize that not only could they win this, they deserved it. "We need no handouts. We're going to win this! We're going to take what's ours with blood and sweat and tears, not with free passes! We're going to prove that we're the best, by winning this with raw skill! We're going to pass these trials because, Jack damn it, we deserve it! Because we ******** can!" With a little puff of nasal smoke, it was finished, and Taryn was left in silence to consider what she had just done, and how awkward she now felt.

A beach. A Jackdamn beach. Hadn't he had enough water-related happenings lately? Graaaaaa . . . Mort squinted in the strong sunlight, immediately pulling the hood on his jacket up. Heat wasn't an issue anymore, but a permanent condition - he'd rather have his head in the shade if he was going to have to suffer the sun, and there was no further complaint.

This, along with feeling like he was a distraction during the puzzling process, had the zomboil not in the best of spirits or hopes before Taryn began her rousing speech. It was hard for him not to be charmed, however, by her logic as she spoke: of court everything she said made sense! Who needed a shortcut anyway! "Zombies p-persevere. We protect horde n' not stop until unable to move," he added, nodding to Alex. "N' even then, keep going! Monsters be strong, whatever size has. Don't n-need magic bonus when have best of offense n' defense!" He fist pumped the air, excited - speeches were actually fun!

"Honey Badgers not give a-a s**t! Let's m-make best sandcastle ever, mkay?"

And all the while, he silently trembled - the cloying smell of the undead would probably soon be upon them.

While the others were talking about building a sandcastle, while Taryn was giving off her speech, Chuppi was currently digging as hole in the sand about deep enough to fit in yet keep her head above the surface. The sun felt wonderful on her skin, to the point she almost wanted to shift forms to feel it all but somehow or another she felt like it was best to stay in this shape. People were watching after all and she needed to be professional.

Being professional of course meant she buried herself up to her neck in the warm sand. She was about to fall asleep, it was horrible.

Alex, who had been previously useless during the puzzling phase, was more then a little excited to see what lay ahead for them now. He hoped fervently that it would be something that he could actually help out with this time...though he honestly couldn't think of much that he could be useful for beyond eating and reading.

So it was with much chagrin that he found himself stumbling along through the hot sand of a beach, of all things, with the hot sun beating down on his rotting flesh uncomfortably. His skin was getting sticky and his shirt was clinging uncomfortably to his arms, back, and chest, new stains already appearing where his flesh began to ooze.

This sucked.

His already horrible balance was thrown off more so by the sand beneath his feet, and he found himself reaching out to clutch on the person nearest to him for support, which was, of course, Yin. He only did this anytime he stumbled, however, which was...well, quite often. Like every second step or so. When they arrived to their assigned destination, he only too gladly stopped, letting go of Yin's arm and trying very hard to listen to Taryn's words but finding that attempting to focus was much more difficult now with a real sun beating down on his head. He actually envied Mort's hooded Jacket, wishing he could at least have that small respite.

His eyes wandered to Chuppi, who was burying herself in the sand. All he could wonder is if it might be cooler underground and how it might be nice to explore that option further.

Yin had never been to the beach, at least, not one connected to the ocean. And the heat? The heat felt fantastic, and with a nice breeze off of the water to make everything rather spectacular. Whatever the sun was in the human world it was infinitely better than the pumpkin sun in Halloween. He might have spared a thought for Alexander, wondering how he would hold up in the heat as the zomboil kept grabbing him to steady himself.

Miss Taryn was giving a rather nice speech, and he listened to it, feeling an odd sense of pride in their group, even if he had been next to useless during the puzzle round. The ghoul may have said a few things that rather horrified him (ladies should not use those words, no one really should), but she was inspirational.

Apparently they were going to make a sandcastle. He knew what sand was. He knew what a castle was. He had no idea how they were going to make such a magnificent structure out of sand, or in the amount of time given to them. Even if it was a relatively small castle there were still the various rooms to consider, and would it need to be two stories or three? How tall for the towers? "Excuse me, but other than sand do we require any materials to make a sandcastle?"

"We're going to need some water to firm up the sand," Taryn nodded. "I think we should go for support and structure. Decoration is nice and all, but I doubt that Famine is hosting an art contest, and height is just a spectacle. We should make a fortress, not a palace." Like real castles were meant to be, damn it! "Yin, do you think you could start gathering some water?" She offered the boil a bucket and then looked over Chuppi, who seemed entirely content, and Alex and Mort, who looked like maybe they wanted to die again.

"Chuppi, can you search the beach for items to fortify the castle?" She'd be hot up there, and she wouldn't hate Taryn forever for it. "Mort, check the tidal pools up by those rocks, if you would?" It'd be cooler there, higher up for a better breeze rolling off the ocean and out of the pools, which weren't deep enough to warrant terror. "Alex... go with Yin. See if you can't find something in the sea." Was he afraid of water too? Well, he'd have the green boil to switch with, if he so desired. "I'll be right back."

The ghoul, chest swelled with pride, approached a gnome who grumpily glared and offered her a starfish. She smirked, remembering a time when gold stars were the most exciting thing, the best prize for a job well done. How appropriate. She returned to their castle site to check on her team, and began digging a hole with her hands. If she could reach the wet sand, they could begin more quickly.

[[ OOC: looking for a sand dollar, a coconut, a tiny hermit crab, and two "seaweeds" - everyone can find one of the above, kind of sent you in different directions! <3 ]]

Water? Meeep. But water meant something cool, and so without any delay the zomboil saluted, winced as he turned towards the sun again for a moment, and began shuffling his way towards a small lathering of tidal pools not far from them. The sand felt awful against his sneakers, and each step made him a little anxious that it might somehow suck him in. He bent his head against the sun and kept an eye on his path.

Eventually he found himself at the lip of the tidal pools, which looked both inviting and slightly terrifying. Who knew what laid within? Carefully Mort got to a knee and scanned the depths, pushing some bangs out of his face; his glasses felt like soon they would slip, with the humidity cooling on his skin. Something began to scuttle along the edges towards him, and Mort saw a tiny hermit crab make its way towards him. Blinking, he plucked the thing up by its shell, watching its legs wiggle in the air.

Er. Better than nothing he supposed? "This okay?" he called to Taryn as he made his way back, holding the crab in his palm, his fingers a cage. "Could be, er . . . guard?"

He didn't know the first thing about sandcastles, or whether they needed guards or not. But he was antsy about having to go back to the pool . . . And those claws looked formidable in his eyes.

Taryn was talking again, telling them what they needed to do, and the little monster pulled herself from her sand nest and dusted off her dress. She did feel cooler from having all that moist sand on her scales and with the sun now pushing down on her Chuppi was practically in heaven. Or...whatever Halloweeners had for a version of heaven. She stretched her arms above her head before turning to look at the rest of the group, smiling faintly and nodding her head. "I shall return with the items, please leave it to me."

She started down the beach, digging her toes into the turf here and there as she enjoyed it all. Lately getting out was a good thing, she liked seeing all these people and trying stuff, and since this trial wasn't as scary as she thought it would be she didn't really have anything to fear, right? Plus she had some of her friends with her, they'd protect her if needed yes? Well she was sort of capable of dealing lots of heavy damage on her own, so...well....

In the middle of thinking about things Chuppi managed to find a coconut, something she'd never seen before. She didn't really like how it felt in her hands, all hard and hairy, and she tapped at it a few times to see if it made noise. It had a hollow sort of thump to it and she frowned. Would this be any use to her group?

She gathered the object against her chest and scampered back to her group, a smile of hope on her face. "Everyone, I have found this items! Will it be okay to be used?"

Fetching water? What Miss Taryn was asking him to do was very much verging on a demand but it was still a question, and she was their leader. He nodded and took the bucket from her, looking back at the sea. She seemed to be dividing them up, which certainly made sense, and he had already turned to go get the water when he heard her tell Alexander to accompany him. Knowing how the zomboil had seemed to struggle with the sand (which was bizarre but not too hard to navigate) he waited to walk next to him, easily able to stabilize the zomboil if necessary.

"I have never seen anything like this," he pointed out, though it really probably was not that unusual or unexpected. When they were getting fairly close the sand began to grow damp under his feet, oddly cool but still feeling nice with the sun blazing down on him. Whether the zomboil stayed in the area that the tide sometimes swept debris or followed him to the water Yin just walked straight out into the water until it was deep enough to fill the bucket and turned around and walked back, waiting for Alexander before retracing their steps back to the group.

"I have obtained the water," he informed the others and then noticed something as he set the bucket down. A piece of seaweed had apparently made its way into the bucket of water he had brought back.

Going with Yin to the water sounded absolutely fine to the zomboil, who was feeling quite miserable at the moment and would have done pretty much anything to distract himself from the heat. Actually, the thought of water was almost comforting. This wasn't a hotspring, so the water was likely cool, and he almost eagerly scrambled after Yin, tripping and stumbling in the sand until he could grab a hold of the other boils shoulder with a damp and sticky hand and follow him along to the waters edge. "Me neither," he replied to Yin's comment, though the zomboil was hardly in any mood to talk right at the moment.

The walking got slightly easier as they reached the cooler, firmer, wet sand closest to the water. His skeletal foot still wanted to dig into the ground, however, and caused him some trouble as he couldn't seem to keep it on the surface. That was rather annoying so he tried not to put as much weight on it, forcing him to hobble along to the waters edge and let go of Yin as the other boil made his way into the water.

Though the mantodae moved away so rapidly that Alex suddenly began falling to his right, so he leaned hard on his left, which resulted in his foot digging deep into the wet sand.

Oh..well....that probably wasn't good.

The zomboil attempted to extract himself, using both of his hands to pull up on his leg just below the knee, but he seemed to be fast stuck in the ground. Becoming slightly more frantic he wrenched harder, only to have the same result, which was nothing. With a sigh, he let his arms drop to his sides, and steeling himself...suddenly jerked and twisted his left leg all at once so that the skeletal part became detached. Unfortunatly this meant that Alex only had one leg to stand on, and with his bad balance combined with dizziness from the sun and the odd textured ground beneath his foot...he hopped, flailed spun, and fell into the ocean water.

And then a wave crashed over him.

On the plus side? He was cooled off. On the flipside, he was down a leg, and he was wet.

Crawling out of the water before he could get hit with another wave, the zomboil made his way over to his leg and dug it out of the wet sand as quickly as he could, pulling it out and inspecting it to make sure all bones were still in place before reattaching it to his knee and waiting for Yin...who by now was pretty much just waiting for Alex though the zomboil didn't know it and probably looked like he was just playing in the sand to the weremantis.

Eventually, he got to his feet, his skeltal leg a bit shakey but since Alex was trying not to put weight on it anyways, it would hold. He hobble-stumbled to Yin, grabbed the weremantis's arm again, and made his way back to the group. It wasn't until he reached them that he realised he had a peice of seaweed resting on his shoulder, and he plucked it off to add to the one in Yin's bucket.

Her team was excellent. Taryn watched proudly as they all returned, grinning and nodding to each in turn.

"Perfect," she told Mort, looking down at the little crab he'd found, "Make sure he has a high wall so he won't escape, and maybe a little water so he can survive the day." Did hermit crabs live specifically under water? She couldn't be sure, so it was better safe than sorry.

Then came Chuppi, with her big odd coconut. While it may not have much aesthetic value, or even defensive, it was a big hard projectile. "This'll make a good weapon. We can leave it to our guard to roll it through the enemies. Or, uh. Yenno. We could just chuck it. Good hunting."

Poor Alex stumbled back with Yin, and Taryn gave him an apologetic smile. it couldn't be all that fun to lose limbs in the sand. Two long strands of seaweed would be mostly aesthetic, but maybe the stink would frighten away enemies. Who knew? It was a snack for their guard if nothing else. "Good, good. Maybe decorate the towers? Thank you, Yin."

The bucket of water went into the hole she'd dug, creating a grand slurry of useable sand. She began to build a raised inner platform for their castle to go on. "We'll need defenses. Maybe a wall? Definitely a gate... I trust you guys! We'll make our guard the best fortress we can, and then we'll... well, we'll beat up whatever tries to get inside." There was no way this trial only consisted of building the castle, after all. The ghoul plucked a sand dollar from the sand with plans to harden their defenses, to fill an entryway.

"Right . . ." Mort's eye twitched as the hermit crab saw fit to pinch the skin of his thumb, shuffling to the small pool Taryn had created and creating an extra platform nearby for the thing to go by. It took a bit of shaking to make it let go of him, though - Jack, those claws had as much strength as a zombie's grip! "Weird, n-not having underwear . . . c-crab, meaning," he explained hastily as he got back. "N' birds look normal too. Humans has strange mini pets."

"I'm not really sure what all of this is for, this building and have all. Back home we do not have beaches or sand so I've never built a castle before. Did I help okay?" She was nervous, worried that somehow her weird coconut might end up being what cost her team victory. Everyone was finding things and everyone was building them the best they could, so she...well, it was in her nature to be paranoid.

Even if the sun was out. Even if the sun felt really, really nice. "So...what are we to do now? Why are we going to battle over a sand something? Is this a normal activity for people to do? I do not think I have been reading about anything like it in books."

Chuppi wasn't really sure what books she needed to read in order to get a good deal of information on that but none the less she did like to read all about the human world and all other places. "The human world is okay, not as scary as I had thought. I really, really like the sun. Hace muy calor. - I'm very warm." She sounded pleased to be warm, not upset. "Let me know what am to be doing, okay."

Yin really was not sure why it had taken Alexander so long to play around in the sand, but he had appeared to be having difficulties walking back. He decided not to say anything, not wishing to upset him by being tactless, but mentally crossing off the beach as a place that Alexander would probably like to go with him in the future. Well, at least putting the idea on probation.

Miss Taryn seemed pleased with their findings, even though it was just a bucket of water and some strips of green. Apparently they were going to work on actually building the castle now, and after watching her for a few moments he began to join in, the claw-like tips of his fingers slicing through the sand. "I believe that a wall would be a very good idea Miss Taryn," he acknowledged, trying to shore up some of the sand.

However, most of the good wet sand was next to the ghoul, and the bucket had been emptied. "Can you assist Miss Taryn with building some defenses while I go fetch some more water?" He asked Alexander, before realizing how utterly pointless it was for him to even ask and hoping that the zomboil did not think he was being ridiculous or bossy. He all but scurried down to the ocean and back, bringing a nice full bucket of water to work with as he tried to help where he could, mostly just mimicking the others working on the sand castle.
