He decided, quite on a whim, to ask Candace to spar with him.

It took Gale quite a bit to come to this decision, not because it was a difficult one, but because he hadn't been entirely certain as to whether or not he'd actually wanted to ask her. Half of the reason being he had never actually sparred with any of the female hunters before, and half because for some reason, Candace had seemed a little...down, lately. It was neither his place to ask, nor to even wonder, but he couldn't help but feel a bit worried about her anyway. He had only just begun to figure out Candace - sort of - and he liked her more than he had initially thought he would.

Not to mention that mission that had ended with her and the two others up in front of everyone else.

But in the end, Gale decided they could both use a good distraction and hopefully Candace felt somewhat the same way.

Maybe. Hopefully.

He stood outside on the training grounds, fidgeting a little with his phone, and then, with only a bit of hesitation, typed out a text message, tucking his gun beneath his arm and letting it dissipate back into ring form.

Text to Candace
Hey - It's Gale. I wanted to know if you would maybe be up for a little bit of sparring? I'm down on the training field if you're interested. If you're not, that's okay too.

Candace had a lot to think about. Aria had told her so much the other day, things she needed to know and things she didn't want to know despite knowing it was for the better. There was just so much she didn't agree with namely the 'we are nothing' parts. They weren't nothing. Their division was great! Why didn't Aria..

Her phone signalling her to a new text got her attention and she made a grab for it, checking who the sender was. Ohhh? A spar with Gale? That sounded fun! The last time she'd sparred someone with a long-ranged weapon had been Jerry while she had Circe. Her chest tightened at the thought of Jerry. The last time she sparred him she had been so cruel...they needed a rematch. Maybe a rematch would be good to do when he hated her? When she didn't have to worry about him holding back because he loved her and didn't want to hurt her.

..He probably didn't love her anymore but would love to hurt her. A spar between them would be great.

No. Stop thinking about that. Stop it. This was Gale, she liked Gale. She had to make up for her atrocious behavior as well, rework whatever image anyone had of her right now. She was better than that behavior..

Text to Gale
I'd love to! I'll see you there. <3

Text sent, Candace changed into more spar acceptable clothing, tight workout pants, sneakers and a tank top, and tossed on her scarf and coat. She also tried a pair of fingerless gloves, stretching her fingers and humming softly as she made her way down to the training grounds. She flashed Gale a smile when she spotted him, holding her arms out for him to come to her for a hug. "Hey, you~!" A spar with her little Gale. This was going to be..interesting. She'd have to remember to put personal feelings aside.

He was starting to expect two things from Candace. One, that she was not quite the person he had thought she was and always had a good retort ready (most of the time, at least), and two - she was a hugger.

At least with him. Which, surprisingly enough, didn't really bother him all that much. In fact, if he were being honest with himself, Gale would even go so far as to say he liked them. There was something about Candace hugs that made him feel as though she genuinely cared about his well-being.

But he would never admit that, of course.

So, with a small, halfway there smile, Gale crossed the field over towards Candace and stepped into her arms, wrapping his own lightly around her waist.

"Good morning," he said, and drew back, his face slightly pink. "I'm sorry, I know this must seem a strange request, but I've never...fought...a girl before, and..."

He trailed off, feeling stupid, and then added hastily "But thanks for, you know, saying yes anyway."

Candace couldn't help but feel terribly excited when Gale willingly came to her for the hug she wanted, curling her arms around the boy and nuzzling her cheek against his hair. Might as well give him his daily dose of affection before they kicked each other's asses. She let him decided when the hug was over, grinning and patting his head. "Pfft, it's fine! I don't think it's strange at all!" She waved a hand dismissively. "I haven't sparred with many long-ranged weapon users. Bix and Jerry...and Jerry wasn't exactly a normal fight. So this'll be new for both of us!" See? Not so bad!

When he thanked her she smiled and nodded, backing away a few steps. "But remember, just because I'm a girl? Don't hold back on me. I'm not going to hold back either, okay?" She didn't think she had to tell him to call it quits if he couldn't handle it anymore, though. She hoped she didn't.

Candace had a way of making him feel both cared about and childish simultaneously. It wasn't a bad thing, really, since he didn't mind, but it was still a little...difficult to get used to. There wasn't anyone quite like Candace on the island, and already Gale was starting to think of her as less of an imposing, slightly intimidating hunter and more of what might have been an older sister figure.

Not that he would ever admit that in a million years.

<< You're so cute when you bluuuushh~~ >>

Shaddup, Ginny.

Glancing down at the gun in his hand, Gale lifted his eyes back to Candace and gave a little half shrug with one shoulder. "I, er...don't use it as often during spars as people think. Or rather...sometimes I just hold the barrel and swing it, like a bat. Jinhai doesn't appreciate it, but whatever works, right?"

Her comment almost got a smile out of him - almost - but what appeared instead might have actually been an amused smirk.

"I wouldn't dream of holding back on you," he said, the thrill of the fight already beginning to grow in his veins. Despite the fact that his partner was a girl, which he wasn't used to, the adrenaline rush of a good, solid spar between two friends was what Gale enjoyed.

Mostly. Unless he was losing to Marcus again. Then it was just annoying.

But at least Gale wasn't ignorant enough to think that Candace was anything but kickass with her weapon and he was not about to let either of them go easy on each other. The playing field, at least, was equal.

For the most part.

His first shot at Candace was not a gunshot, but rather a somewhat weak-aimed kick at her legs, trying to knock her off balance. He was still a bit rusty when it came to hand-to-hand combat, but they were just getting started, after all. He'd use the gun when he got a little less stiff and some of the tension eased from his shoulders.

"You don't? I see...how's your shot though? Can you afford to not practice actually using her for shooting?" Candace was actually very serious about her question, reaching into her pocket and slipping on a pair of plain fingerless gloves. She didn't have anything runic but she could certainly practice with normal gloves! She was pleased to hear what Gale was telling her, grinning at her small friend as she summoned Atropos. "Very good, I'm glad."

Suddenly Gale came at her in a way she wasn't expecting and she easily jumped over him, laughing. This was fun! "Don't leave yourself open, sweetie." She told him, spinning on her heel and raising her foot to smack Gale with the blunt side of Atropos' blade. She would use the sharp edge, sure, but not in the head or neck area. The last thing she wanted was to seriously hurt someone during a spar.

...Again.

Gale shrugged.

"I like to teach myself more than one way to use a gun, just in case," he said, and unexpectedly grinned. "That way, if I don't have room to shoot, I can just use it to smack people with. It's come in handy quite a bit, actually."

And then the fight was on, and Candace was leaping towards him, her leg outstretched. Gale felt the side of her foot connect with his head, and he staggered sideways, seeing stars. It took him a moment to regain his bearings, Gale shaking his head a little - which wasn't the smartest idea, since it sent a nice, fresh wave of dizziness through him, but once that passed he felt a tad better.

A tad.

One advantage of being short was that it was easy to duck down below Candace. Gale gripped the barrel of his rifle, spun it around in his hands, and threw it upwards, slamming the butt of the gun quickly and precisely into Candace's stomach.

Well she had said not to go easy on her.

"Like that."

"I suppose that's true, but don't not practice using her as a proper gun, okay? Me? I suck with a gun. Like, I don't know what it is but...I can use a scythe, I can use sickles, I can use Atropos but I can't use a goddamn gun." She sighed, shaking her head. It was a mystery.

When Gale staggered she did pause a moment, worried she'd overdone it somehow. Would he be okay? Did she need to stop and take him to the infirmary? She waited until he seemed stable again before letting her guard up once more. Bring it.

Apparently he was ready to bring it! She grunted and doubled forward as he hit her with the butt of his gun, her hands pressing against her middle. "No s**t! ******** hit. But here's why I'm saying practice your shot." Candace then proceeded to put her weight into the heel of one foot and spun, aiming the heel of her boot at Gale. The talon got him right in the side, stabbing and slashing as she continued her spin and then hopped a few few away from him.

"Because if you can keep me away from you? I can't do that."

He was really very satisfied with his hit - at least until Candace's foot slammed into his side with the force of a javelin. Gale staggered, losing his footing, and wound up sprawled non the ground, gasping for breath. She had completely knocked the wind out of him, and for a moment he just lay there on his back, propped up on his forearms.

"...weren't you an Epsilon before?" he asked her, tilting his head as his breath slowly returned, and Gale shook his head, as though trying to clear it. "In the...trials I mean, the ones before we awoke."

He was already pushing himself up, however, Gale spinning the rifle into position. There was a loud bang as he pulled the trigger, but his aim was slightly off - the bullet was directed towards one of her arms.

"This is weird, shooting someone I like."

Ah, damn. Did she overdo it? Candace waited patiently for Gale to get up, listening for a sign of if she had to hurry to his side and carry him to the infirmary. Oh, good. He sat up. "Uh huh. Epsilon Ten. Why?" What did that have to do with anything? Aw, damn! Did she kill her Chipmunk? That was terrible.

Oop! There was the bang! Candace cursed and turned to avoid the bullet, but it grazed her arm. "s**t! That stings like a motherfffff..goddamn! I've never been shot with a bullet before!" Candace laughed and rubbed her arm, shaking her head and grinning at Gale. "Aw, you like me? That's sweet."

Candace came at him again, taking advantage of Gale being on the ground by sliding across the grass low to the ground. She dropped down, one leg extended out before her as she let momentum send her straight at him with the bladed edge of Atropos pointed toward him. "It's strange fighting someone with a long-ranged weapon."

Epsilon Ten. Well that certainly explained a lot. Gale gave Candace a little smile.

"I remember you," he said. "Er. Well. I remember the...shooting."

A pause.

"Or rather, the lack of shooting."

He didn't really feel any particular need to add "and the giant mass attack all of the Epsilons did to me and wound up killing me." The trials had been ages ago, after all - it was in the past, and it was staying in the past. Besides, he liked Candace the way she was.

His face flamed instantly.

"Not like that," he sputtered, clearly flustered and then gave a small ouch as Candace's next swing hit, Gale throwing up his arms automatically to try and block her from hitting his face. He lowered them slowly again after a second, biting his lip.

"I just meant - that you're - you know - nice."

<< By all means, keep digging that whole deeper. >>

Shut up, thought Gale, but his next kick towards Candace missed entirely.

The shooting. So it wasn't--

...Waaaaaait! "..I shot you! You're the only person I managed to shoot!" Candace laughed, remembering very clearly what he was talking about. She'd shot the cornfields around one of the other trial participants and then finally shot them. She remembered! Ahahaha! That was ******** rich!

Candace~. Atropos crooned. I'm ready. Don't miss this time. Plllllleeeeeeeeeeeeeease~. Candace sighed. Right. Don't miss. She could do this.

Candace smiled as Gale called her nice again. She wasn't as nice as he made her out to be, but it was nice to hear all the same. It made her happy that someone would say that about her. "It means a lot to me to hear that, Gale. Really." Candace had been about to attack him when he kicked out at her, cursing and forcing herself to throw herself over his leg. She landed awkwardly on her hand and slammed to the ground as her arm gave out underneath her, laying on the ground on her back and staring up at the sky.

Well then.

"Sorry, Atropos..."

So she did remember. Gale's lips - for once - quirked upwards into a half smile, slightly rueful.

"Yeah, you did," he said. "You got me pretty good, too. It hurt pretty badly, if I remember right. But everything worked out in the end."

There was a somewhat wistful expression on his face now - a mixture of sadness and bemusement, and Gale shook his head, attempting to scoot backwards, out of Candace's reach - but it turned out not to be necessary, since she wound up sprawled across his leg and then onto the ground.

Ouch.

Gale pushed himself up into a sitting position, then quickly kicked his leg up, twisting around and slamming his elbow into Candace's side. Then he rolled over, climbing back to his feet and brushing dirt off of his pants. He looked down at her.

"For what it's worth," he said quietly. "I think of you...kind of like a sister."

A slight pause. Gale looked away, his face back in Tomato Land.

"You know," he muttered, embarrassed. "The annoying older sister kind."

"Yeah, well consider yourself special because other than corn you are the only thing I have managed to hit with a gun that wasn't a netted gun. I suck with those things." Candace laughed, moving to get up until his elbow came down in her middle and forced the air out of her. She grunted. Damn! He packed one serious punch! "********," Candace coughed. "Your elbows are like knives. Jesus that'll bruise for a little while." Of course that was when he decided to inform her of he felt, and her cheeks flushed darker. A sister? She'd never been called a sisterly figure before. She'd always been an only child, and she didn't even ever get the 'you're like a sister to me' speech from guys she wanted to hang out with. But Gale already had a sister, he'd said so himself. For him to call her his sister...

Candace smiled, a warm smile as opposed to her usual cocky grin. "I'm honored, even of you did just call me annoying. I'll let it slide this once." If only because they were in the middle of a very good spar. Candace pushed her weight into her shoulders and then her elbows, kicking Gale in the gut with both feet and she continued her little backwards roll before hopping back up onto her feet.

"You're a good kid." Candace smiled. "I'll be the best sister to you I can be, okay? After I kick your a**, of course. Nothing personal...though you have apparently been keeping a secret from me." She tsked, putting her hands on her hips. "Naughty!"

He hadn't meant to get so serious in a fight that was supposed to be a friendly spar, but it had just slipped out anyway, and Gale was more than a little embarrassed. His face was a nice shade of red now - a very violent shade of red, as Jinhai so helpfully pointed out inside of his mind.

But the smile was nice, and Gale felt his face heat even more. At least until Candace's foot connected with his stomach, sending him staggering backwards several feet, his feet slipping in the grass until he collapsed onto the ground, gasping for breath.

He grinned up at her - a wide, genuine smile that was almost obscenely rare in Gale's book of facial expressions.

"I look forward to it," he said, and then pushed himself to his feet, firing a quick shot. It missed entirely, Gale distracted by the last comment.

"Secret?" he said, frowning. "What secret?"
