UPDATE!

Quote:
Ohio used to have some of the weakest regulations for wild and exotic animal ownership in the nation, but after more than 50 animals -- including lions, tigers, leopards, wolves and bears -- were released from a private farm and killed in October, more than 100,000 people joined Ohio native and college student Liz Dumler in asking for stronger laws. The Ohio legislature just passed the Dangerous Wild Animal Act, which bans new ownership of certain exotic animals and places restrictions on current owners. Governor Kasich has given the bill his full support.

Liz writes: "I am beyond ecstatic that Ohio legislators and Gov. Kasich have come to this decision that significantly improves the lives and safety of both humans and animals in the state of Ohio. This event closes an ugly chapter in Ohio's animal welfare history. I hope that the memories of the Zanesville animals who lost their lives in October will not be forgotten, and that they will continue to be remembered through this legislation. Thank you to all of you who showed your support through Change.org, you definitely made a difference for the lives of animals in Ohio!"

Some of you may have heard of the recent escape of 73 exotic cats in an Ohio region that were shot down and killed thanks to the paranoia and dis-concern of the safety of these animals to prevent them and the people and animals in the area at the time of the escape. Whenever an idiot with a pet tiger gets mauled the police barge in and kill the animal simply to retrieve the body of it's owner. The only way to stop this stupid slaughter is to pressure Ohio Governor John Kasich stricter laws regarding citizens owning and selling exotic animals as pets. If this makes you angry then sign it.

wait, is this in favor of banning exotic animals? or is it just trying to make it a bit harder to obtain exotics?

The petition has more details than I provided but it's to add stricter laws about it. I think it said something along the lines of more regulations to make sure the people owning the animals are kept properly and the owner isn't doing something stupid with them.
And I also see I misread how many of those animals died. There were 73 and 48 were killed.

We won! The Ohio legislature has passed a new law that places more restrictions on current owners of exotic animals and bans new ownership of certain exotic species! Disasters like the one in Zanesville are much less possible now. I love that people aren't able to obtain more wild animals in Ohio. The fact that there's so many tragic incidents ending in death of an animal or their stupid owners is proof that average citizens can't be trusted to care for exotic wild pets.

Yeah, I'm not so happy about this. It's exactly the kind of knee-jerk legislation I was afraid of. The ban in it is so broad that it could cover domestic cats like Bengals and savannahs as well as wolf hybrids. It could potentially cover animals like Fennec foxes and red/silver foxes as well.

Zanesville was a tragedy. But it happened not because the animals were there, but because the individual who owned them was mentally disturbed, had a criminal record and was allowed to keep these animals when local authorities knew just how unstable he was. They didn't want to deal with the situation because they didn't know how to deal with such large exotics, so they turned a blind eye. If anything the failure to enforce the laws that were already on the books led to the tragedy, not the presence of the animals.

Blanket bans do not work.

Ohio traded one BSL for another.

yeah, bans like this really suck. there are probably alot of people in ohio worried about their pets right now.

also probably means less vet care for the exotics there sad

They just put fourth stricter regulations and made it required that you would have to have a permit to obtain such animals.
I like this, it means idiots that just want the animals for the cool factor wont be able to get said animal.
It's good and bad, good because it means it will be harder for idiots to get big cats and other potentially dangerous animals bad because there will be some out there that will refuse to cooperate with the bill.
I see this working out for the better side of things though.
