The chill of winter clung stubbornly to the plains of the main lands. Even though the sun had risen high into the sky and there wasn’t a cloud to be seen it felt like warmth never existed at all. Nexus raised his head to glare at the bright ball as if that would somehow make it warmer. All the bright maned stallion got was a gust of cold air to the face. He shivered, scowled, and then made his way back to where part of his family had gathered. Of the three, two of them stood huddled together their pale bodies doing little to help them keep warm. For a moment Nexus thought about joining them before reconsidering. It was fine for the mares to cuddle but acting like a little kid and snuggling against him mom and grandmother seemed stupid to say the least. Instead he opted to go mingle with his black bodied uncle who had undoubtedly separated himself for different reasons than Nexus was.
“Sure is chilly out,” he called to his uncle in his usually lazy and cocky drawl. He could practically taste the other’s aura of ‘go away’ as he approached. It didn’t even cause Nexus to pause. There was something undeniably fun about bugging a person who didn’t want to be bugged. “I bet it would be better with some company, don’t ya think?” He trotted directly over to Cain’s side before draping a red-tipped wing over his back blocking his escape. He could feel his mother’s curious gaze on his back but didn’t worry. This was Cain he was bothering, not Zareen, not Karius, not even Ciar, but Cain. Neither of the mares cared about Cain, his dark coat somehow made him less precious to them and that suited Nexus just fine.

The cold had never bothered Cain as much as it seemed to bother any of his relatives. His dark coat helped warm him even on the coldest of days. However, it was not the lack of a chill that kept him away from his sister and mother. No. What kept him away was the fact that if he tried to get near they would almost certainly fault the action. Such was the way of his family. From what he had heard most mothers try to avoid playing favorites. His mother made no such effort. Really it seemed she went above and beyond just to show whom she liked best. Some of his other family members had picked up on this system of favoritism with great enthusiasm much to Cain's chagrin.
It was one of those members that saw fit to approach him now. Nexus. He considered running or flying away but as the boy could also fly he couldn't see how that would actually help. Once Nexus had picked a target nothing would change his mind.
"Get off me, Nexus." He said voice practically dripping with disdain. His golden eyes locked onto the brilliant wing tips of his nephew's and wondered what ill fate would befall him if he were to pull a few of those feathers out. The images his mind cooked up were enough to beat back the impulse. "I think the day is perfectly suited for solitude if you don't mind." He prayed that for once in Nexus's life the boy would take a hint.

Nexus pretended not to hear the order and left his wing where it was, leeching heat. If they weren't family he suspected he'd have a broken wing by now. Magically they were though, and Nexus could annoy him on a whim. "Don't be like that ya old sour puss." He grinned at the irony. They were close to the same age after all. The only old one here was his grandmother. "You always say that."
The moment the words had left his mouth Nexus paused in thought. Cain really did always say that. Any time someone mentioned company his retort was that he'd rather be alone. It was almost like he hated all of them. Nexus smirked at the thought. Why on Earth would Cain hate them? It couldn't possibly have anything to do with all the wicked things they did to him like the thing Nexus was currently cooking up.
"So..." He pulled his wing back adopting a more reserved and concerned expression. "Why is it that you never want company? You never come around any of us and you never go anywhere with friends either. You do have friends right? Any kind. Guy friends...lady friends...you do have some of those right?"

For a brief, fleeting moment Cain actually thought Nexus was extending an olive branch. What had possessed him that made him think that was even a possibility? There was no peace with Nexus. There were times when Nexus was blessedly absent and times when he was around causing trouble for anything within a 12 mile radius. As this was clearly one of those times Cain was now wondering if he could quickly break Nexus's wings and take off before his sister and mother rushed over. The odds were slim but it might be worth the gamble.
"And why would I want your company?" He asked with a snort. "You're loud, your hair's an eye sore and your voice grates on my ears." He ruffled his wings clearly offended by the subject at hand. "I suspect the rest of the population is the same as you. Now tell me, nephew, why would I want to subject myself willingly to more idiocy than I already have to endure?"

Nexus had to fight back the urge to retort. There would be plenty of time for throwing insults around later after he beat Cain. Even if his 'dear' uncle wasn't aware of it Nexus's line of thought did actually have some purpose. "I think you'll find there are a lot of people out there that aren't like me." Which was probably a good thing, Nexus would hate having to compete with someone like him. "I also think...that you're really just, I dunno, scared of everyone." The smile that had settled on his lips somehow managed to be both charming and impish.
"But that's ridiculous isn't it? I mean, we're descendants of angels, what do we have to be scared of? We're better than everyone else. Aren't we?" He fixed his eyes on Cain issuing a silent challenge. He needed his uncle to take the bait no matter how ridiculous it was. The pride card usually worked with everyone in his family but Cain had always been the odd one out.

Cain knew his nephew well enough to recognize his baiting tactics when he saw them. Unfortunately he also knew Nexus well enough to understand that no matter what he did at this point Cain was in for it. He had been, quite successfully, targeted. The look he shot Nexus managed to convey all of this. Whether Nexus cared that Cain was not up for his games or not, however, was a different story entirely.
"I'm not scared of anyone, Nexus, regardless of heritage. I just don't see the point in spending time in meaningless conversation with meaningless, empty-headed, people." Hoping to put a quick end to this conversation he gave his head a quick nod before hastily making his way away from his family.

Cain was leaving and Nexus wasn't having it. The was more than one way into coercing people to play along with his little games. Black mail was one of them.
"So you think mother, grandmother, grandfather and everyone else in our family are meaningless?" He said with a sly grin as he took a few steps after his retreating uncle. "I don't imagine they'd much like to hear that, now would they?" He watched utterly delighted as Cain came to a halt. They both understood exactly what would happen if Nexus reported this information back. Nexus was pretty sure Thorn wouldn't beat Cain into a pulp, she didn't like bruises, but then again he was awfully dark.
The best case scenario would probably be temporary banishment until someone with a level head came around. Though, for Cain that might actually be a worst case scenario.

As Cain turned around his face looked completely normal. It showed a general dislike of the world paired with an uncaring air. Inside, however, he was plotting Nexus's murder. He would lead him off into the woods somewhere, knock him out, snap a wing and leave him to the wolves, bears or any kalona in the area. No one would ever need to know of Cain's involvement in what would be considered a devastating betrayal to his family. A shame.
"No, I don't imagine they would." He retorted struggling to keep his voice even. If the only way to stop this was to play Nexus's little game then so be it. He would play for now. "So, you want me to have company. What is it that you propose?"
Nexus didn't bother to hide the gigantic grin on his face when Cain caved in. "It's simple." . . .
