[If you want to know more about Van Argiano, click on these links...El Scientifico Caramglo]

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Welcome to the Tower between Time and Space, Between Dimensions and Realities! In your world time stands still as you compete here within my realm! And just why are you here, you may be asking? To participate in a particular experiment of mine! To observe and analyze the actions and personalities of your universe when bereft of certain elements of your character which allow you to function as you normally should. I am controlling the elements of this Tower; you are to overcome the challenges set before you. It is a simple experiment, no? And for those who participate, I've prepared fitting compensation...
As you may have noticed, this is a Tower. There are many levels, of which you will be visiting only four today. On each level there is a challenge that you must overcome using your wits, your skills, and of course, your Ultima. ...What is that you may ask? To begin the explanation, look into your left hand and note the thin needle clutched within...you're only noticing just now? This weapon is called an Ultima; it will be your weapon and your bounty...each Ultima has a unique skill, which is the power you will be permitted to use in the Tower. All your other abilities have been sealed...you must compete in good faith using the tool you have been given. But be warned...not all Ultima are equal, and if you are defeated, your conqueror will claim your Ultima.
Are you beginning to understand? Take on my Tower now, with all your skill. I look forward to seeing which of you possess the fortitude, the cunning, and the charisma to survive. I thank you all...good luck!"
Van's laboratory has papers, beakers, vials, and various unusual items strewn about haphazardly, though he seems to know just where to find everything he needs in an instant. Van is constantly moving behind desks and test tables, making notes or working on some small test.
When he addresses the contestants, it is facing a large computer screen that transmits his messages through a massive monitor in each level of the Tower.
Rules of Van's Tower
*~ You may only enter if you are selected by Van (you may volunteer to Arena Emperor Directly).
*~ There are 4 Levels of the Tower. On each level the challenge changes. You must pass the challenge to advance.
*~ Follow the rules of each Tower as they are spelled out exactly. Acting outside of the laws may result in drawing Van's ire.
*~ Winners on each level of the Tower advance.
*~ Receive one Ultima at the beginning of the Tower. This will be your weapon for the duration. All other abilities, resistances, and weapons are sealed. Tiers are irrelevant.
*~ You may obtain the Ultima of another competitor if you defeat them directly.
*~ If you complete the Tower's challenges, you may be permitted to keep your Ultimas. '
~::Welcome to Van Argiano's Tower!::~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

...Below is the list of Ultimas and those to whom they have been assigned...

Quote:
-Van's Ultimas-

*Silver January - Axe-type needle, it forms a cleaver which can carve through White February's Armor and inflict significant bleeding wounds on an enemy. These cannot be healed by Luminous June. Its wielding is a bit slower than other needles. [Holder: Karissa Kyuuban]
*White February - Armor-type needle, this long needle forms a lance, but more importantly it covers the arm in an armor that significantly reduces all damage of needles that strike it. Can completely deflect Yellow May's needles. [Holder: Shikari Hibiki]
*Black March - Long, thin piercing needle...when it pierces an enemy it inflicts a poison that will drain 1/5 of an enemy's health per-turn. Can ignite for dark damage if one chooses not to use the poison. [Holder: Deadpool]
*Green April - Green hook sword which extends to any length and can split into up to 5 separate branches. [Holder: Stein Kiyomasa]
*Yellow May - Long-range needle which projects its tip like a long, thin dart at enemies and restores itself after each attack. Hits with burning light. Can fire up to 10 darts per-turn. [Holder: Nekama Kobayashi]
*Luminous June - Thin, piercing needle which constantly restores the health of the holder by small/moderate measures when successfully striking an enemy (siphons health/endurance). Cannot heal potentially fatal or serious wounds. [Holder: Sawyer]
*Indigo July - Long, thicker, broad-type Ultima which pierces Dark September and greatly increases physical attack power and defense. [Holder: Eido Aeroda]
*Blue August - Short blue dagger-type Ultima which may unleash a powerful torrent of water from the tip that extends over great distances. [Holder: Al Azif]
*Dark September - Black fencing needle which holds the ability to deflect or nullify the ignition of other Ultimas which contact it. Must be in contact to stop ignition, and it is only a momentary prevention, not permanent. [Holder: Sano Gallen]
*Red October - Short red needle almost like a dagger, when it makes contact with another needle or a target it ignites a contained explosion which significantly burns/impacts those within a 3 meter radius. [Holder: Cierra Highland]
*Gold November - Longer, golden piercing needle which contains the highest attack/piercing power of all the Ultimas; it extends nigh-instantaneously and sends a paralyzing jolt through the target. Weakened significantly if doused by water. [Holder: Agito Mibu]
*Colorless December - Transparent piercing needle which drives the wielder into an insatiable bloodlust, making the wielder much stronger, sharper, and faster than usual. [Holder: Kazuma Koroko]
*Rainbow Thirteenth Month - Arms Inventory type, the Rainbow Thirteenth Month is a fanciful belt which holsters several items. A needle which extends to great lengths, a potion which mends small wounds, and a small staff that allows the user to cast a spell to increase speed. [Holder: Chiharu Kagura]

"...I don't care how you do it, just get it done..."

It wasn't long before the Gate of the Tower had opened and the chosen competitors began to move into the opening level; it wasn't what you would have imagined on the outside, the Gothic and almost architecturally ancient-looking monolith that extended far into the sky above them. On the first level it was actually quite pleasant, an open floor with green grass that lined the entirety of the area, flowers blooming all about, and on the far side of the level there was a thick, gray rock the size of a small elephant set before a massive maple tree. Its front was smooth and from the top there was a thin trail of smoke rising into the sky above them, which seemed to go on forever (though one must have known it couldn't, being inside the Tower). Following the trail of smoke down to its source, one might see a rather carefree-looking man in a loosely-worn military uniform, blue and unbuttoned at the top with the usual tie discarded. His red hair was lifted slightly by a wind that came from nowhere, and his green eyes peered down at the incoming troop with some mild level of amusement...as though this wasn't the first crew that he had welcomed into the Tower for his different sorts of tests. His lips curled a little, his fingers pinching at the end of his cigarette to pull it away from his mouth and let out a deep, thick plume of smoke into the sky above him. "So you lot are the new competitors? What world are you supposed to be from? You don't even look that strong," the proctor of the exam coughed slightly, holding a black-gloved hand over his lips before wiping there, smirking down at the crew once more, "For those of you who didn't listen to the Candy Man that runs this show, you've just stepped into the First Floor of Van's Tower. This Tower tests various aspects of your character, depending upon the Proctors who are chosen. Though the Tower itself has an untold number of levels, you will only be enduring Four Challenges today. Lucky you. ...Unfortunately for you, your first Proctor will be me."

Shifting his legs so that they dangled over the edge of the rock, he pinched the cigarette between his teeth and let out a toothy grin. Hands rested against the rock, his feet crossed once more, and with a spark the end of the cig exploded into a small flame that burned brightly, trailing up from the white stick in a rather unnatural manner.

"The name's Scott Wallace, Level 1 Proctor of the Tower of Van. All that you need for my challenge you already have within your possession...the Ultima Needles, that is," the uniformed man explained as he raised a hand, snapping gloved fingers so that a needle of his own appeared within his grip, "You should be familiar with the specs of your weapon before you begin. I'll give you all one minute to test out your Ultima and ask any questions you might have before we begin my challenge. But get ready...if you think this Tower is just a series of unending battle, you will be sorely mistaken."

Al Azif

Al considered the man's words for maybe half a second. Maybe. She was the kind of girl who tended to immediately act on her thoughts (this was occasionally headache-inducing for those who knew her), and if she did plan ahead, it was usually on making as fantastic an entrance as she could manage. Still, justice was not the sort of thing to let the possibility of inquiries pass by, and the girl looked over to the Proctor as he gave some very basic information about the tower while she did warm-up stretches. Warm-ups were important if you were planning on doing anything gymnastic, and she absolutely was. She'd already discreetly tested her dagger while avoiding the eyes of others; no sense letting them know what she was capable of, but if it was questions... well, Al was good at that. "For the Ultima that do something more than changing size, is there a mass or energy limit on what they're capable of emitting? Do the laws of physics in our world work normally here? Is it really particularly unlucky to have you as our first Proctor? Because if you're the Level 1 Proctor, it seems to me that everyone would have you first, so luck wouldn't have anything to do with it. Can I play music while we're doing this? Are we going straight through, or do we get to eat and rest and go to the bathroom between challenges? If there's a candy man, will there be cake for the winners?" She appeared to be completely serious about each and every question. Mmm, cake.

Impulse The Devil Power

Safe to say that Cierra was pissy about this. You don't just pull her out of her plotting of various things to tell her she was going to be a part of some weird experiment in the middle of god knows where! She scowled at the proctor speaking to them. Taking a look at the needle thing in her hand, it was red, looked kind of like a knife or a dagger. Ultima, huh? With my powers sealed...guess this better be worth my time to use. She frowned as she looked at Al. "Oi, good god, shut up." She muttered under her breath as she looked away, looking at the others. Only like, one or two of those questions were things she wanted answered. But...she was curious. She looked at the ultima again, moving it around in her grip to look over it. Aside from the appearances, they didn't look much like anything special. But then again, these guys were weirdos, on first impression. Who knew what the hell these could do? Certainly if I got the red needle it had better measure up to what I expect. Was she basing that opinion only on the fact that she had it? Yeah, she probably was.

"I'm with the chatty gal there. Just what are our limitations on these things?" She said, gesturing to the ultima. Something about hers felt...sort of right, really. Like she'd like what it did, even though she cared more to test it out once doing whatever the hell they were supposed to be doing. Oh hell, she knew better than to use some random dangerous weapon where she could hurt herself too. She cared less about the rest of the people here, but she didn't maim herself. At least, unless she's told she herself would be safe from her own weapon. But from the look of that so called "Candy Man" Van, he looked about as easy to trust as she was.

Sawyer
Servant of Chaos

Sawyer was a little more then angry that her access to Widow's powers was seeming locked away in this strange place. And she didn't have her favorite weapon, it was replaced with some sort of needle. Sawyer glared at the the needle and her eyes wandered to some of the other people around her. Each one seemed to have there own needle or 'Ultima' whatever they were being called. She didn't recognize any of the other people, well there was one person that was another Messiah, but she never had gotten to known him really, and at the moment wasn't planning to do that. Not now of all times. "So... what happens if I decided I'm fed up with one of the other competitors and try to make them less of an annoyance?" Sawyer spoke up asking a question, not that she had much of a care what the response would be she was mostly asking out of curiosity's sake. The was already someone that was talking way to much, bringing some attention to herself as Sawyer looked off to the girl who was nearing having a bad case of verbal diarrhea, something the short tempered Messiah wasn't a fan of.

Eido Aeroda

The red haired Junior had his head in his hand as he looked about, rubbing it slightly.
"I'm not dreaming again..am I?" he muttered to himself, shaking his head as he looked into the crowd, seeing a small gaggle of girls already talking to some guy....... A Mr. Wallace....
"Um....What happens to those of us that...Fail the test? he called, gripping the Ultima needle in his hand. He wasn't entirely sure what was going on, but he had a feeling the consequences were....dire.
Looking to either of his sides, and swinging the needle, he started to try to get a feel for it, noticing it was a bit longer, and thicker. Something about it seemed to fill him with a sort of strength and vitality. As if toughening him up, even. He swung it around a bit more, as he looked to the others, before focusing back on Scott.
"Is there a limit on how many people will make it through the tower? Like, is this going to be a contest or somethin, or could all of us make it out?"
He hoped it wasn't a contest....but at the same time, had a feeling tests weren't going to play in his favor either. He'd have to try hard though...He'd have to focus, and he'd have to take things seriously!!!
Otherwise, he wouldn't be able to get back to his routine, and get back with Niiya to claim his prize for the festival!!!

Karissa Kyuuban

So they were in some sort of Tower of Challenges? Karissa glanced down trying to figure out the power of the 'Ultima' she was given. It was taking her awhile to figure out how to access the power of the thing. It just seemed like some sort of Oddly shaped needle until she figured out that it changed shape to something more weapon like and appealing to her. Sure it wasn't a gun like she was used to, but there were plenty of times she had used a close range weapon normally with good results. With the best slight of hand she could manage, she let the weapon change back to its normal small needle like form. A few people were asking the guy in charge of the room some questions, nothing came to mind for her to ask, but she was paying attention to any answers given to the others. She didn't exactly want to die trying to do this. Dying was defiantly high on her list of 'Stuff I really don't want to happen to me'

"...I don't care how you do it, just get it done..."

Despite his somewhat careless expression, the Proctor didn't seem to mind the slew of questions that descended upon him the moment that he opened the floor to these kids and their questions; he had invited them to ask whatever they thought they needed to know in this minute that they had to prepare, so they were doing just that. Following his orders...that was a good thing, really. His fingers flicked the torch-lit cigarette on his lips and the flame died, black smoke rising from the charred end in a plume, and a smoky sigh escaped him. "What an Ultima can do is dependent upon the Ultima. For instance, your Blue August will release a single torrent of water each time you activate it with roughly the circumference of a beach ball and enough pressure to do fairly significant damage to any normal human. Each Ultima tends to have a simplistic function...it's up to you to discover any creative applications thereafter. You can activate your Ultima's special ability once every swing (turn); if you carry an ignition type Ultima, your Ultima will mostly protect you from the worst of the damage your own Ultima might inflict upon you. If you want to know more, you're just going to have to test it out in battle," the Proctor answered calmly, folding his hands behind his head as he looked up into the calm sky above him, "As for Physics, I wouldn't say that the rules don't exist here; however, with regards to your bodies directly you will find that the air of the Tower is particularly compatible with human beings on the lower floors. Your bodies will become significantly more durable in this air, more agile, more swift, and stronger...you will remain yourself with your usual parameters, only enhanced. For example, this rock I am sitting on is roughly 10 feet high...normally, it would be impossible for you to leap to the top and land on your feet. In this Tower, however...I expect you should all be capable, or nearly capable, of that."

Tapping his heel back against the rock, he realized that the questions were taking a bit longer than he had actually given them. "To answer the rest of your questions: Yes, you are unlucky to have me. I am not the Level 1 Proctor, I am a Level 1 Proctor in the Tower. This Tower has upwards of 100 Levels, and until you reach Level 20 nearly every test you are given will be administered by a Level 1 Proctor...and not every Floor of the Tower is limited to one Proctor, so those administering the test rotate frequently. ...There will be no music when you begin the examination. You will break only when given permission by a Proctor, and if you are not given such, you will not break. If you win, you will receive something far more worthwhile than cake. If you fail the test, and most of you will fail the test, you will be ejected from the Tower at the least...there may be more than one who reaches the Top, but such a thing is a rarity. And I should not have to say this, but if you deign to fight amongst yourselves between challenges and without the permission of the Proctor, your punishment will be quite steep. ...I believe that was all your questions, was it not?" running a large hand through his red hair, the man took a deep inhale of his cigarette before flicking it to the grass at the base of the rock and immediately replacing it with another that sparked to life without the use of a lighter. His toothy grin returned as he looked down at the competitors with an analytical eye, "We will now begin your Level 1 Examination. From this point on, act only as instructed. Do not ask questions, and do not attempt to bend the rules. Your success in this tower is dependent upon your compliance with the instructor's directions. Are you ready?"

"Your first examination is simple; 13 of you cannot escape the first level of this Tower...it would be a stain on my pride. Therefore, by some measure we are going to reduce the number of competitors to 9. That means 4 of you will not pass my test...see what I mean by unlucky? Here are your goals; you must either force your fellow competitors to say the words, 'I quit!' by whatever means you can and automatically disqualify them...or, you must force me to say the words 'You pass!' When 9 competitors have passed, or 4 have quit, the Exam will end. ...Oh, and as a bonus, any of you who can land a single blow upon me will automatically pass the exam. Just remember...there's a world of difference between a Proctor, a Ranked resident who has cleared every level of this Tower, and newbies like yourselves. The odds of you landing a strike on me are less than one in a million..."

Cracking his neck to the side, the Proctor hopped back atop the rock and stretched his upper body to either side.

"Examination One...Commence!"

Eido nodded quietly, watching as the figure went about explaining things, talking about the ultimas, showing that they had enhanced abilities in the town, and how their test was going.
There were....several ways to go about it it seemed....Though, he couldn't help but wonder..
"So...like......uhh" he called, scratching his head "What happens if I can hit you again?"
At this, he figured he'd give the whole enhancement part a whirl. He jumped up a bit, seeing how high he could move, surprised at the....difference.

Oh man, if only Miina could see this!! he thought, gripping his Ultima tightly. It was an experience, for sure. Though, how the other people would react, he wasn't sure. He just hoped he could pass this test for once.

He could see the competitors thinking over their options, testing out their skills, eyes shifting about as they decided how to go about the test that would best suit them. There were certainly many ways to win, and more than one way to lose, so it was important to have a game play of some sort before you got started. Often times, this test was one of the most chaotic that he administered to the newcomers who entered into the Tower. Eido's question was not lost upon the uniformed man atop the rock, however; picking the cigarette from between his teeth, he let out a tendril of smoke from between his lips and smirked. "That's a precocious question now, isn't it? Hit me and you advance automatically," his grin grew wolfish as he clamped down once more on his thin, white cancer stick, "Think you got what it takes to hit a Ranker, fireball?"

His gloved fingers cracked for a moment and his green eyes flashed. Was this kid really going to take on such a suicide mission with so many other opponents more his level standing around him as they spoke? He seemed the energetic sort, maybe not the sort that thought out all of his moves ahead of time. A gambler? Well, only time would tell, he supposed.

Don't say the words 'I quit.' Make the others beg for that. Or get Mr. Proctor here to say 'you pass.' Simple enough rules. The trouble was getting it to happen. Especially the automatic pass for landing a blow on him. She looked at her red weapon, and then peeked at the others. Oh, they'd have to go through hell and high water to get her to give. She's never let other people stop her from climbing the ladder before, she won't start now.

And so, as soon as the words 'Commence!' rang through the area, there was a brief moment's tension in the air. She wasn't immediately sure what it would take to get Wallace to say someone passed. What would it take to get the others to squeal then? As long as four of them gave, or nine people passed, the challenge would end. Her eyes were watching the dying smoke of the discarded cigarette from earlier that the proctor had thrown. Her focus was somewhere between getting the Proctor to approve, or getting her enemies to beg. She spotted the red haired boy moving first, seemingly asking a question as he went to test a jump up the massive boulder. Her expression didn't change that much as she looked up, stepping back. Oh, what was that about finding out what our Ultimas did? She jumped, hand touching the boulder's face as she slid down near where Eido was. Her shoes touched ground, and she turned to him. "Why don't we see if one of us cries uncle first before you go after the bigger fish?" She said. If none of these other ingrates were going to do s**t, then allow her to be the first one to do something productive. She smirked and moved her arm, swinging her ultima's needle towards him, expecting more to aim for his ultima as well. But if she hit any part of him that was fine with her. The hopeful sound of the weapons coming into slight contact with each other was met with Cierra's answer about her own ultima. The red needle sparked, and immediately ignited, forcing Cierra to jump back as a controlled explosion went off between her and Eido. She smirked. That had to be the most lovely chance combination she's ever had. Maybe now she'd encouraged some action in this place. Make this more exciting, why don't you all? As much as she liked the idea of going after that confident Proctor, she wanted to see some piggies squeal.

"Damn! I mean.." Eido's voice called, snapping his fingers a bit as he heard a voice calling out. As he turned, the girl was swinging a small, dagger like Needle at him!
Shitshitshitshit! He called, Opting to jump away from the girl with the psycho weapon, his weapon coming into contact with hers the slightest bit. And....well...
Talk about starting things off with a Bang! he thought, feeling the explosion singe him as he tumble-rolled a bit, before getting back on his feet.
"So....I take it that's a 'No' on working together as a team from you then? he called, nervously chuckling as he looked about. Surely someone...anyone would get between them? He pushed himself back up, as he gripped his weapon tightly. He had to focus...he had to give it a try...he had to fight!!!!
......
Oh god why me?

SHADOW ARBITER

What was he doing here? He didn’t know for sure, all that he could remember was that there was a mission to be done. Yet, here he was, the Shadow Arbiter was now a contestant in some sort of game, but for what purpose. Questions began to shroud his mind, but then they began to fade away. Why question things? Kazuma began to block the suspicions away from his head. His sword arm was not attached to him, his wings seemed to fail him, his abilities were locked away, but he was given something as a trade; a single weapon, a rapier of some sort. There was curiosity within the his mind, but he dared not question them. There wasn’t any need to question them, there was just one thing to do, "Kill." The only thing that would be going through his mind was the thought of blood, he wanted to spilt all over the floor. He could hear it, the faint sound of beating hearts, they were like bugs flying around his eardrums. Kazuma wanted them to stop, that noise that drove his head mad, the hearts that beat with life. Clenching his teeth together, the warrior growled out in annoyance, the noise of life was pounding against his head. "It needs to stop, " he muttered, "I will rip their Hearts out," that pleased them more than it should. Really it did, the thought was so pleasing that it managed Kazuma to smile with delight. It was all set now; he would rip their hearts out, and make sure he would dine on their blood. The feast was going to be great; he knew that to be true; licking his lips in excitement the psychopath waited. Fingers began to twitch, legs shaking with ecstasy, eyes widened and staring at everyone that came into view; his cattle for the slaughter. His belly began to growl, roar even, for the feast! "The Blood….it will be…wonderful." Oh yes, the beating of life was an annoyance, but it was okay. Kazuma was going to enjoy ceasing that noise, and shred their bodies limb From Limb! "Hehehehe…." Oh it was funny even, when was the last time he was able to express his emotions in such a straight forward manner, it was exquisite. The mysterious man said that it was time to begin, and Kazuma didn’t waste no time in dashing forward. The target was already found, it was a girl, young and petite. It didn’t matter about how she looked now, it meant nothing to him! Once Kazuma is done with her, she will really look pretty! Something felt different though, not in a bad way, He felt faster. More Agile, stronger even, his mind was accelerating and it felt Great! Within moments Kazuma was right in front of the girl, driving his needle/rapier weapon straight into the torso.
