User ImageThe female cub was again pouncing at bugs. One of her favorite pass times when she wasn't with anyone in particular. There was a sorrow though that no one wanted to do anything with her. So many brothers and sisters and yet they always seemed to be busy. The golden cub gave a huff of annoyance, usually she was hanging around her family but today she had decided that she wanted to spend time in the grasslands a bit further from the adults to stare at the grazing antelope.

Long grass making her hard to see when a shadow fell upon her. She looked up and grinned. "Hello!"

Rei was returning home at the end of a long but peaceful day at the borders. The large golden lion yawned more than once before he had almost reached the mouth of his den before he spotted a familiar yellow blur in the grass. The sun behind his back, a tall shadow was cast over the red-eyed cub as Rei stepped closer to the little lioness. He couldn’t help but smile as his daughter looked up.

“Hello.” he mirrored her grin with ease, one paw landing gently on Ayo’s head. “What are you doing, sweetie?”

"Chasing bugs." Came her prompt reply before she gave a purr and went to n** at his paws. "Now chasing you!" Weaving between his feet to catch his brown tuft of fur between her paws. Her father was out a lot doing his scouting duties, but that was ok. It was times like this when he came home that really made her day. She liked the time she had with her father.

"All done today?" she asked, stopping her relenting pawing at his tail. "Does that mean you can play with me and take me out around the lands?" She scurried to where he could get a good look at her begging face. Red eyes filled with the slightest sparkle of tears and her face contorted in a plea.

“Bugs?” Rei chuckled, swaying his tail around as he tried to keep Ayo from grabbing it and he stood very still as she moved under his legs. She was small, after all. It was hard to believe one day she’d be just big as her mother and older sisters when right now she could fit so neatly in his paws. He wished he could’ve seen his older daughters Zahara and Danuwa when they were this small.

“Yes, I’m done for the day. You want to go for a walk?” he asked lightly clearly not really considering the obvious reply. But… dear gods. That face was just not fair. How could he ever say no to her when she asked it like that? Especially when he loved to spend some one-on-one time with each one of his children anyway.

“A short walk maybe…” Rei said with some forced hesitation, trying play the part of the undecided who still needed a lot of convincing – when in fact, he could never deny such a heartfelt request from one of his cubs.

Bouncing she grinned, "You don't have to sound so disheartened dad." She did grin at him though knowing that deep down he was joking. "Where are we going to go?" Wondering where they could go without being gone too long. She ran off a little and stopped, sinking to the dirt and then pouncing at another bug, this time catching it under her paws. "I caught you a bug!" She called loudly over her shoulder.

“You did?” Rei asked as if the fact his daughter had managed to catch an insect was one of the most amazing things he’d ever heard. “You’re going to be one fine huntress one day.”

He stepped closer to his daughter, looking for what he expected to be the remains of the little creature. “Where is it?” he sniffed at her paws with a curious expression. Was she keeping it there? For a brief moment, he wondered if she was playing a prank on him and perhaps there was nothing under her paws. “Is it for me?”

Her father praise made her puff up again with pride in herself. "That's because you're a great scout!" She cried out, careful not to put pressure on the bug. When he came closer she lifted one paw, then the other. The beetle was there before it decided to move again, she put a paw gently to hold it still. "See! Yes yes its for you. Though he seems to want to get away." She felt kinda bad that she was keeping it there. "Should I release him so you can take us for a walk?" They seemed to be dawdling anyway.

Releasing the bug, she skipped a few paces. The light reflecting off the grass and water looked amazing, dazzling. She could see the herds roaming and grazing. What an amazing sight!

Rei chuckled as he watched his little spitfire, wondering with some regret that maybe the boyish Zahara had been like this when she was little and that he had missed it completely. His muzzle dropped almost to the ground as he took a look at the cub’s catch, trying to clear such thoughs.

“I can see that.” He chuckled again. Poor little thing. It was a good thing his daughter was kind as many cubs would’ve squashed the insect without a hint of regret. “Yes, let the poor thing go. For all you know, he might be late for something.” He grinned at his little joke as he watched the beetle disappear from view and then followed after the bouncy cub.

“Everything the light touches. The Pridelands, our pride.” He smiled gently at her look of wonder as he stopped by her side and looked around with a content expression. This was his home and it was certainly beautiful.

The compliment for releasing the bug made her smile. She didn't like hurting things but she did like scaring and playing with them a lot. "I hope I didn't make him too late." Her face dropped just a tad but then she smiled. "Well at least he'll return to his family and do what he needs to."

The beauty of the land as the sun bathed it in gold made her proud. This is what she would grow up to know more about as opposed to sticking close she would be out there with the other hunters and huntresses catching food for the hungry mouths like her own. Maybe after that she could be like her father, a scout.

"It is our home." She said as she walked slowly next to her father, "Can you take me to see all of it?"

Being able to put herself in the insect’s position was a good thing as far Rei could tell. It showed some measure of creativity and empathy in a very young cub and the Scout was proud of her. Even if he suspected the small bug was being attributed a lot more intelligence than it deserved in her mind now, he liked to see that none of his children displayed signs of cruelty despite having spent a small but critical period of their youth in war times.

“I’ll show you all there is to see. No matter how many days that takes.” The adult said in a more serious tone of promise, looking down at the red-eyed cub. There would come a time when his little cubs would grow out of this adorable phase at which point he’d be one seeking them out in order to spend time with them. He knew he’d miss these little moments one day but for now, things were perfect just the way they were. “One day you will know all the lands and even more if you want.”

The small cub beamed at her father before she lunged at him playfully. Days like this should go on forever she thought. Having fun and playing with all that the land provided for them with no worries in the world. "Even more?" She asked wondering what that could mean. "I just want to go and do whatever you do papa." She gave her best roar which was quite impressive she thought. "I'm gonna be super strong and bring home lots of food when I get older." Maybe... maybe she'd turn out to be a scout like her father, she had plenty of time to think about her life choices later right now it was just spending time with dad.

Rei dropped to the ground dramatically as if he'd been defeated by the weight of the tiny cub that jumped on him but she was so small he still had to look down to meet her gaze.

“Even more. Our lands are great and full of prey but I haven’t always lived here. There is a whole world out there and it’s beautiful and different.” His eyes dropped to his daughter, a sudden worry creeping up from a dark corner of his mind. She was spunky and adventurous, as a cub had every right to be, but Rei couldn’t help but fear his descriptions of the outside world might encourage his little girl to one day leave his sight. It was a relief to hear Aya say she wanted to follow his example.

“It was… great to find this place. The land of my ancestors. Our ancestors.” He tilted his head with a small smirk, trying very hard not to laugh at the not-yet-very-impressive roar. “This is where I met your mother, after all.

Ayodele gave her father a grin, "Maybe I'll explore it a bit but I'd rather stay here with you guys." That's when she decided to venture away from her father going exploring a little bit and then finding a large enough rock that she believed would hide her from his view. A game of hide and seek, sort of. "Father I am lost!" She called out. "Come find me!" She was ready to pounce at him again when he came around and then dart away. What a dainty little cub with a fiery spirit. She was going to be a handful for whatever mate she had in the future.

Rei was pleased beyond words to hear his daughter say she had no plans for permanently leaving the Pridelands. Obviously, he was still concerned she wished to explore the world outside their borders and many things could still change as Aya grew but, hopefully, she would retain the strong familial bonds he shared with his second Pridelands litter. As someone who had wandered for quite some time, it would be hypocritical to hold on to his children and not let them go but as a father that was exactly what he wished he could do. The idea that one of his children could be alone or injured on one such adventure or simply never return – forever letting him wonder if they were safe, happy, alive! – was nothing short of heartbreaking.

“Oh, where oh where, could my daughter be? She disappeared right before my eyes! Mommy will be so angry I lost her!”
Rei said from the short distance before taking his nose to the ground and tracking Aya’s scent all the way to a large rock. His tail hovered on one side while his head peeked from the other. “Mmm, I wonder where she could be…? Oh no, maybe she was snatched by a nasty hyena!”

The little cub leapt out as her father a flash of tiny baby teeth and small prickly claws. She was a handful for sure. But she was doing her best to be as ferocious as she could as she attacked her father. "I don't want mama to be mad at you." She said as she licked his face. "Let's go hunting and bring something back for the others!"

Twirling around she could barely make out a few herds in the distance. Or at least she believed them to be herds out there. Some sort of African beast was out there ripe for the hunting.

"What do you think papa? I could help you spot them." Her prowess of climbing trees had gotten better and she had a rather decent eye.
