Okay so it had been ... around one week? Maybe? Danny was bad at keeping track of time to begin with. One week though, since she'd gotten in a fight with Roch. She'd made up with Rikki- that part was nice right? It didn't feel as nice as it should've though. After all, she was still missing something. Well no, someone.
The horsemen trials seemed like a reasonable place to make up. Clearly she was going to be on a team with Roch and Rikki, her two favorite people. Maybe Yin and Michi and Bea and - ... Well she would work that out later. But definitely Roch.
She got a tip off from someone that he was in the music room. As she walked through the doorway, she cautiously said, "Roch?" Was he still mad at her?
... Was she still mad at him?

Roch was lounging in his usual spot, a frown on his face as he eyed the edge of Desiree. It was dull. He'd been sharpening it regularly, and yet it still came out dull whenever he summoned her. He knew what it meant. Well, it couldn't be helped, he thought, still staring at the edge as Danny walked in. He had a lot of s**t dulling his mind.
Like Danny. Danny was definitely dulling his edge at the moment. He sighed and looked up. "Yo."
He didn't seem that happy with what was about to happen.

Ouch. That was cold, even for Roch. Danny's attempted smile turned back into a frown at his sigh. Well if he wasn't even going to try maybe she should just leave!
A similar sigh came out of her own mouth though, and she walked over to Roch and pulled up a beanbag next to where Roch was sitting. "I'm uh. Sorry. For the emblem thing." Best to just get it out in the open from the beginning.
Danny never really knew when to talk or when to leave things alone. Social timing wasn't her strong suit. She continued though, noticing that Roch was fiddling with his guitar. "Something wrong with Desiree?" she said, her hand reaching out to touch the guitar.

"Danny, I--" He took a deep breath, feeling like an a*****e and not knowing what to do about it. "I just... when I was ten..." He even let her touch his guitar, he was so out of it. "Look, I need to explain somethin' about the emblem. Will you let me? Actually I gotta explain a lot of things, I think."

Danny knew that look.
Her hand immediately retracted from the guitar, and she squished both hands in between her legs. Roch was about to tell her something serious. He always got that look when he was going to say something serious- usually about his dad, sometimes about Xiu- one time with Taryn. Even if they were in a fight, Danny knew him better than most.
"Yeah .... I mean uh. Yeah just go," she said, looking down at her lap. She wasn't quite ready to met his gaze yet.

"I didn't grow up like you did," he said. "You know that, right? Well fact is, I grew up spending most of my time on the streets. When I was eight... well, this don't have to do with the emblem, but it will explain the ghost problem. When I was eight three of the ghost kids from my neighborhood trapped me in a well. I summoned Desiree for the first time. And with a weapon I could fight, y'know?"
He was making a hash of this. But he trudged on stubbornly. "And a few years later the local gang decided I was interesting enough to make join. They were criminals--they did some really, really bad stuff. And I helped them."

"I know all that," she said quite honestly. Well not entirely. She knew he was in a gang, not that he did bad stuff. She knew he hated ghosts because of something that happened when he was little- not that it had to do with Desiree and a well. As a best friend, she'd picked up bits and pieces.
She rubbed the back of her head and said, "If you think I'm not going to like you because of it-"

"That ain't it!" he said quickly. "That ain't... that ain't the problem. The problem is the years went on, and I did more and more bad stuff. And I got a... a juvie record because of all of it. I saw it a while ago, right after the haunted house field trip. It's seriously thick, y'know?"
He frowned. "Those emblems... I dunno how seriously everyone else is about them, but I don't want to screw up. I can't screw up, Danny. Not when it's my best friend's life on the line."

If she was smart, she would've known what a juvie record meant, why Roch didn't want her emblem, and left the entire situation alone.
Danny wasn't smart.
"What's a ... juvie record?" she asked, confused and eyebrows furrowed, "I don't remember anything about a juvie record in the haunted house." She tapped her temples, as though that would help her remember. Maybe he meant after they split up? She never did find out what happened to him afterwards. Roch never liked to talk about it. Then again, she didn't like talking about what happened to Red either.
She shifted her weight slightly on the beanbag so that she was sitting a little closer to Roch. It still wasn't laying on top of him like she normally was, but it certainly wasn't the awkward foot or so like it had been all week. Tiny victories.

"A juvie record is a list of s**t that should get you tossed into prison, if you were old enough, see?" Roch said bluntly. "They got a LOT of stuff on me. Some stuff I might not have even done, but enough that I DID do that they could toss me into prison for scarelings any time they got the urge. Hell, in another year they'll be able to toss me into adult prison," he added.

Danny looked at Roch, a little horrified, but not for the reasons he was thinking of most likely. "They can't send you to jail!" she said abruptly. It was just unthinkable, like Roch dying. No. Just no.
"I'd come save you, don't worry," she added, nodding with a smile. That was a good plan. If Roch ever got captured, she would just come save him! Easy as pie. Mmmm pie-
Seeing that Roch was still completely serious, Danny sat in silence for a moment, and then said, "But ... what if that happened to me?" Another pause, then, "The record thing I mean. If they had enough stuff to throw me in jail ... would you vouch for me?"
Quite frankly, Danny probably did have a record of her own. She'd destroyed more than a few pieces of furniture back home. The only difference was that she had two very wealthy parents that could slide it all under the table. She was lucky. Roch wasn't.

"You're a demon from a super wealthy family, Danny. You got lawyers that can do that sort of stuff for that," he said simply. "I'm broke, from a broke family, with a granddad that's probably deeper into more illegal stuff than I am," he told her. "My word wouldn't do s**t to help you out, it'd probably get you in even more trouble than you were in the first place. And breaking me out of prison wouldn't help, it'd just cause even more problems."
He shook his head. "I'll deal with it. I don't want you to, got it? This is my problem, not yours or anyone else's."

Danny looked down at her lap again. Roch's words sort of stung. Not so much because of the logic in his words, but more because ... She knew she had lawyers and things to fix it up. Her deadie could probably buy a freakin' court if he wanted to. She wanted Roch to say he'd vouch for her, that was the bottom line. She could care less about lawyers if it meant Roch would stick up for her.
She was finally beginning to see how steadfast Roch was in this emblem business. Her fingers wove themselves together as she fidgeted nervously. "I guess I get it," she said confidently, but then her shoulders slumped. "I don't get it at all." Chalk that up to the list of things she didn't understand.
"But ... if you want it that way ... I guess ... Well its not something I want to fight my best friend over." She smiled a little as she spoke, and then turned to face him. "We uh. We are best friends still right?" Her smile turned into a worried, frantic frown. It took Roch a lot to spit it out the first time- would he say it again?

"It smart?" he asked after thinking for a moment. "You're makin' some new pals, and I got nothin' against that, but I'll tell you now, they might start liking each other, but I sure as hell ain't gonna like them," he told her bluntly. "I want nothin' to do with either Yin or Michi. You hang out with them, I ain't goin' over. Don't drag them to my parties, either," he said. "So if you wanna pick one of them as your new best friend I wouldn't blame you."

Roch ... didn't like her friends? She knew Roch didn't like Yin, but she thought it was like how some people just had a bad feeling about others. Like when you see someone and say "I don't like them." Not like ... Not like Edel!
A frown crossed her face. Roch was ... making her pick? Well Roch was her best friend- she loved him more than she loved Rikki for Jack's sake. On the other hand, Yin had been there for her whenever she wanted to talk, and thanks to Michi she was becoming slightly more coherent in talking to ghouls, instead of awkwardly running off every time...
There was no real competition though, as sad as that was. "Okay. I'll try and do that ... the avoiding thing.." She frowned. This didn't feel quite right, but she couldn't give up Roch. If it meant losing a few friends ... Well she'd bare with it somehow. She'd do it for Roch.
She sat in silence for moment, just thinking about the decision she'd made offhand, then decided to switch the subject. "So did you hear about the horsemen trials?" She scratched her leg and said, "Well I mean, of course you did. There was an assembly and all ..." she was just babbling to get her mind off things now, "Are you nervous?"
