This. Was. Ridiculous.

That was Alice's first thought when she jolted awake from the most vivid dream she'd had in a long, long time. And it wasn't just any dream, no, it was..it was... Flushing, she rubbed her face with her hands, futilely trying to scrub the lingering images from her mind. She'd take crazy past-life dreams over this any day! The nature of the dream would have been bad enough regardless, but it involved someone she barely knew. Had met all of twice. And he was a priest.

Hoping to clear her head, she rose and dressed and headed down into the gardens. Maybe the cool night air would help.

Whoever thought drinking was an enjoyable past-time clearly needed much better hobbies. Laurence wasn't exactly completely wasted, but his balance was off, and he found himself stumbling even as he forced himself to make his way back to the Pantheon. He had been drinking, had gotten to talking with some of the people there... and then, after a while, his thoughts had turned to the young woman he'd met fairly recently. Alice.

He would be the first to admit that his thoughts were extraordinarily impure--it had to be the influence of the alcohol. The Devil's nectar, Emeric had called it. He could see why. Her legs, were what he was thinking of currently. Long and creamy-pale. All of her skin was, really, and when paired with that sleek, dark hair...

The priest shook his head roughly, slurring a loud curse at himself. He was losing his focus. He was tired. Stressed. That was all. He'd pray for forgiveness later, when he could actually think properly.

He had no idea that by rounding the corner, he was going to make his own life impossibly harder. Laurence froze in his tracks when he saw Alice, and his heart... flipped, or something like it. His throat closed up, and yet, in that moment, he was almost deliriously happy to see her. She was beautiful.

The rational side of Alice's brain was fighting hard, cycling through all the reasons she should not be thinking about Laurence, and of course, that only had her thinking about him more. It was a miserable, vicious cycle that she wasn't completely unfamiliar with, but this time it seemed a hundred times worse. Or was it really so bad? God help her, but she didn't want to stop thinking about him.

Alternately trying to wrap her head around these thoughts and shake them loose, the last thing she expected was for the subject of them to appear out of nowhere. Laurence wasn't the only one who froze; Alice abruptly halted and stood rooted to the spot, staring back. Whatever rational thoughts she'd had left promptly fled, leaving her with equal parts joy and terror.

What was she supposed to do?

His throat was incredibly dry, and Laurence wished he was not so painfully aware of the alcohol sloshing around in his gut. It made him feel like he wanted to vomit--and that was not the way to impress a young woman. "Evenin'." He slurred quietly, hoping he didn't look half as nervous as he felt. His experience when it came to women was... painfully limited, as far as courting situations went--and why would any sane woman want to involve herself with a man knocking on death's door?

Still, Laurence couldn't deny that his heart was still pounding in a way that was not entirely unpleasant.

"Couldn't... Couldn't sleep?" It was late. Maybe. He didn't know.

When he spoke, breaking the silence, it shook her from that moment of shock, at least partially. It was enough that she could finally remind herself to breathe and relax her stance instead of standing stiff like a spotlighted deer...although, fortunately, the wide-eyed portion of that expression was hidden. It was a small blessing.

Alice looked down for a moment and dragged one hand through her hair, fingers curling close to the scalp and pulling just a little. "Yeah." The admission was barely above a whisper. If he had any idea why...God, who knew how he'd react? Poorly, she was guessing, and that was probably an understatement. "You?"

"Yeah," His smile was a mixture of relieved and sheepish when she didn't go running off into the gardens to get away from him. Not that she seemed the sort to shy away from any situation. Even if it just meant talking to her for a little while, that'd be enough to satisfy him. For tonight, anyway.

He paused for a moment, debating, then continued. He was too drunk to probably think it over and decide against it. "Tryin' to forget how much time 've got left. Didn't work so well." Not until she'd showed up, anyway. Every second was worth it now.

He smiled, and her heart soared, but soon dropped. How much time he had left. She didn't want to think about that, either, didn't want to think that his god would take and change him when he was already perfect.

"Oh. I was just, um." Wait, wait, that was a terrible idea. If she shared why she was having trouble sleeping, even vaguely, he might ask about it, and then what she was supposed to do? Except she'd already started talking, so she had to finish it somehow. "I couldn't stop thinking, that's all. You know, how everything you think about starts you thinking about something else, and..."

Wow, that sounded really stupid. "Uh, nevermind."

An actual grin broke out over Laurence's face at that, and he eagerly added his own thoughts on the subject. "Yeah... Chain-reacting, sorta. One thing leads to 'nother and then it just kinda keeps goin' on and on..." Sort of like his rambling. He wasn't aware of it though, rubbing the back of his head.

"No, no, it's okay." He reassured her hastily, not wanting her to feel uncomfortable. "I gotcha. I do that a lot. Like, all the time." Or something. He finally seemed to realize he was talking a lot and shut up, resisting the urge to stuff his hands into his pockets.

"...D....D'ya want to go on a walk?" The priest finally asked, forcing himself to meet her blindfolded gaze. It couldn't hurt to try!

"Oh, good." She was visibly relieved that he understood, and as such, she sounded a little less stupid. "I thought it was just kind of a me thing, 'cause I worry about stuff all the time anyway, but I guess not." Well, she still worried about stuff, but at least she wasn't the only one kept awake by that sort of thing.

Alice wasn't usually one to ramble quite so readily, but...something about being around Laurence was as comfortable as it was frightening, somehow. "Sure. I was walking anyway, might as well have company."

She tried to make the response more casual than she felt. He was just being friendly, she reminded herself. That was all it was.

Those few seconds before Alice gave her answer were the most stressful points of his entire life. What if she said no? What if she laughed at him and left? Laurence didn't understand why that would matter... but, somehow, he felt like he was wound up tight. Fortunately, he nearly melted with relief when she said yes, and he bit down hard on the inside of his cheek to keep from grinning like an idiot.

It was easy enough to step beside Alice, the silence filling the space between them as his thoughts tumbled and whirled over what to say next. It was hard when he kept getting distracted by how long her legs were, and he jerked his head upright to keep from staring.

"You're still doin' okay? With all of... this?" He gestured vaguely at the gem set in his chest, hidden by cloth as it was.

"With..." It took her a few moments to realize he was referring to the whole god and host thing, since he'd more or less gestured at himself, and... "Oh, with that, yeah. As okay as it gets, I guess. It's never not weird, but my life's been weird for years, so. What's a voice in my head?"

He was close, and she wanted to reach between them and take his hand...but no, that was a terrible idea. Instead, she clasped her hands behind her back to help stifle the urge.

"Amen to that." It was a mutter, and his hand dragged briefly over his face, reflecting on everything that had happened to him. Slaughtering his companions, possession by a demon... but no. That was in the past. He'd been forgiven--and he was going to sacrifice All to repent for his sins. It was the best he could do. The only thing he could do.

Somehow, that seemed to help make up his mind.

Hesitantly, carefully, he reached out to brush his fingers against one smooth cheek. "Best... Best kinda weird I've dealt with in a while, though."

Alice watched, partly because she was curious as to what he was thinking about, but also just to look at him - which she shouldn't be doing, it was weird. This was weird, and all kinds of a bad idea. Just as she started to force herself to look away, however, he touched her. That was...startling, and brought rational thought to an abrupt halt (not that it had been doing especially well in the first place).

As her cheeks flushed beneath his fingers, she reached up to lay her hand over his. "...Yeah. It's turning out alright, I guess."

It was taking all of his effort to keep his fingertips from trembling, but all of his nerves melted away as her hand smoothly covered his own. He could feel the heat of her face, the softness of her skin, and his shoulders slowly slumped as the tension eased from them. There was the wild impulse to kiss her fluttering in the back of his mind, but Laurence knew that would be going too far. Where these thoughts had come from, he couldn't say, but he'd rather not embarrass himself by demonstrating his lack of kissing skills.

"You're really beautiful." He did manage to say once he'd regained something of his wits.

As it happened, Alice wasn't anything even remotely close to an expert on kissing, or on anything else that was going on here. And what little experience she did have, well, she tried not to think about. It was too complicated and too far behind her. She took a deep breath to steady herself - though it didn't actually work - and smiled, self-conscious but also elated. Laurence thought she was beautiful. Her, of all people. It hardly seemed possible, but he'd said it.

"Thank you," she said softly, and turned her head to kiss his palm...which seemed like less of a good idea once she realized she'd done it, and she quickly took a step back, looking away.
