Etymology: Laerad derives from the alternate name of Yggdrasil, most famously known as the World Tree or the Tree of Life. Irminsul, Mimameid, Cabala and Laeradr are other names associated with the World Tree. Although the Tree of Life is generally depicted as an ash, scholars think that there has been a mistake in interpreting the ancient text of the Norse, and believe that it is a yew. Its ancient origins, longevity, and the fact that it is an evergreen further confirm this belief.

(Yay! It's a new picture, even though it's only a head-sketch).

Name: Higashi
Age: 23
Birthday: May 27
Hair Color: Brown
Eye Color: Green
Height: 6'3''
Weight: ?
Likes: Forests, nature, traveling, children, family, peace and quiet, helping others, sunrises
Dislikes: pain and suffering, having loved ones die, feeling helpless, ones who abuse their power, killing
Talents: Gardening, playing the lute and piano, singing, able to wield almost any weapon with precision, can feel the auras of plants; has a hidden power (?)
Weaknesses: suffers from depression, dwells too much on the past, too overprotective, constantly blames himself
Personality: Higashi is a very kindhearted and friendly individual, who, regardless of his unhappy past, is emotionally strong enough to support himself and the others around him. He is naturally strong-willed, though there are times when he loses his self-confidence and resolve. Currently, he lives/travels alone, and the loneliness of having no one in his life often triggers him into a depression. Often, he reminisces on years gone by, never able to purge his thoughts away from the events done to him in the past. So not to worry any of those who meet him or communicate with him, he displays a mask of presentation, a mask that attempts to hide his sorrowful eyes and strives to keep a gentle smile upon his face. Nature is his only solace in times where he has no one else in whom to confide. However, if one is to befriend him, one has found a reliable person whose selfless nature will do anything to protect those from danger. Perhaps, then, he has found an irreplaceable companion in the form of a leaf, a companion who will chase away the unwanted loneliness and despair from his past.
Past/Background: Higashi was born as the first child of loving, but poverty-ridden parents. He lived in a ramshackle three-room cabin built by his father, where he spent his first years living a carefree life of a child. When he was three, his mother died from giving birth to his sister, Kita, and things were drastically altered for the rest of his life. His father, grief stricken by the news that his loved one was no longer living, turned to alcohol and abused his son almost daily. Higashi found that he needed to grow up quickly, for the sake of looking after Kita, who his father neglected, and for the sake of his dead mother to whom he made this promise. Although Higashi was abused, his father taught him the way of the warrior, and he learned many techniques of which he knows till this day. Higashi truly loved and cared for Kita, and did everything to keep her from all harm. Because of her existence, Higashi was able to stay kindhearted, loving, and protective; traits that would have faded away with the harsh abuse and training his father made him endure.

Kita was a very sickly child, and when she was seven, she passed away from malnourishment. Higashi, heartbroken and shattered, no longer had a true goal in life, and considered joining her in death. However, he remembered that, despite the treatment he received from his father, he loved him and had to look out for him. For the first time since he was three, Higashi developed a bond with his father, who slowly turned away from alcoholism to better care for his son that he felt he could now relate to; after all, his son also lost someone dear. Nonetheless, the grief that plagued the father's mind was too great, and shortly after Kita's death, he took a sword and ended his own life. Lost and alone, Higashi again contemplated killing himself to join his family, but he made a promise to their graves that he would survive and live to honor the lives of his loved ones who passed on. (This summary just focuses on the first ten years of his life, as there is much, much more to it than what I have written here. However, it's a lot to explain, and it's irrelevant to add, since the first ten years is all one needs in order to define his character and to justify his actions.)

Taxus baccata is a conifer native to western, central and southern Europe, northwest Africa, northern Iran and southwest Asia.

It is a small to medium-sized evergreen tree, growing 10-20 m (exceptionally up to 28 m) tall, with a trunk up to 2 m (exceptionally 4 m) diameter. The bark is thin, scaly brown, coming off in small flakes aligned with the stem. The leaves are lanceolate, flat, dark green, 1-4 cm long and 2-3 mm broad, arranged spirally on the stem. The leaves are highly poisonous.

It is relatively slow growing, but can be very long-lived, with the maximum recorded trunk diameter of 4 m probably only being reached in about 2,000 years. There are unconfirmed claims as high as 5,000-9,500 years, but other evidence based on growth rates and archaeological work of surrounding structures suggests the oldest trees (such as the Fortingall Yew in Perthshire, Scotland) are more likely to be in the range of 2,000 years. Even with this lower estimate, Taxus baccata is the longest living plant in Europe.

Most parts of the tree are toxic, except the bright red aril surrounding the seed, enabling ingestion and dispersal by birds. The major toxin is the alkaloid taxine. The foliage remains toxic even when wilted or dried. Symptoms include staggering gait, muscle tremors, convulsions, collapse, difficulty breathing, and eventually heart failure. However, death occurs so rapidly that many times the symptoms are missed.

The yew is often found in churchyards from England and Ireland to Galicia. Yew is also associated with Wales and England because of the longbow, an early weapon of war developed in northern Europe, and as the English longbow the basis for a mediaeval tactical system. Yew is the wood of choice for longbow making (taken from Wikipedia).
