Eventually Rainart had to call it quits on the elusive wildcat hunt. He had followed it past the forests that he was used to and into the oppressive yet dangerously open desert, and nothing. After that he crashed back into the forest but even that was not meant for him that day. He had met a strange traveller looking for her forever-home and helped lead her into the swamp. A strange mare. Took a feather from him as thanks for helping her find a good spot. He would have been fine without any thanks at all. After that he gave the wildcat a quick track back to the edges of the desert, but found nothing to go off of.

Patience was not what kept him from tracking it down, it was family. He was gone for a few days now and didn't want to keep his mate waiting. It was strange how one changed when family came into the picture, but it took hold almost overnight and he was changed for good. His was a slow evolution, but as he walked through the forest nearing his home he thought about it, tried to analyze it. This is what he came up with:

Before Ariadne, he was a loner. Not knowing any social graces, and just headbutting his way through conversations if he needed to. Had the world to himself, and did what he wanted, when he wanted.

Since he met the love of his life, he had become... attached. He never wanted to be away from her for too long. Not like he couldn't leave her side whenever he liked, but he didn't take long journeys or hunts by himself. Didn't want to be that far away from her. Didn't feel right to be away from her for too long.

What a strange concept.

Flickering lights followed the stallion. She lurked in the shadows, her coat barely moving with the subtle grimm figures that usually moved. She was hungry, ready to feed on fear. Grauen Kerze felt that he was a worthy opponent, someone it would be difficult and finally satisfying to inspire fear in.

The stronger, the more fierce the opponent the greater the feeling and feeding when she elicted their fear. He felt so...empty, so distant. How could she bother him? How could she...attack him mentally or physically to inspire fear?

She stepped into the clearing and faced him, her eyes flickering and assessing. "What brings you to my woods mortal?"

Deep in thought, he had not noticed the flickering lights until they were standing in front of him in plain sight. Stopping dead with one foot in the air poised to take the next step, Rainart's thoughts escaped him. Mind blank except for what he was taking in about this stranger.

Mortal? She looked mortal to him, so why would she be singling him out as mortal? Everything dies, so it was strange for her to be claiming otherwise. He supposed she was special, what with the wandering figures on her coat, but even that could just be a trick of his eyes, or the flickering lights in her mane.

He thought about just passing by without a word and continuing on his way... but Ariadne would have pushed him to at least answer the question, be even a little social. So he dropped his lifted foot with a heavy thud, before looking down to the sturdy mare and replying in a calm, gruff voice, "Passing through."

Grauen watched him. He was tall, bulky. He was...dangerous and interesting. He would be a great challenge to provoke. Did he even have fear in his body? Has he ever felt fear at all?

He didn't appear the kind to. She could understand though, she'd never felt fear either. She couldn't recall a time where she felt swayed or motivated by fear. She had long used it as a weapon against others, a weapon she was great at wielding.

How best to use it against him? What weaknesses would he have? Some fear of darkness? Not likely. Fear of loud noises? That was quite laughable. What then could he be afraid of?

How best to speak? How best to use him? She breathed deeply, trying to think of it. Best to be demure to figure it out. "Just passing through? Heading to where?"

All she had to do was keep him talking, keep him friendly. Explore his complexes, find out what it was he feared and use it against him. The feeding would be...most delicious. What was it exactly about fear that made her feel so alive like it was a tangible and edible meat.

Delicious. She had never found anyone else who fed like she did--not that she wanted to share. But the harder it was to feed, the better the feed--the more fufilling. She could not survive on it alone--she of course needed food, but she needed more than that too.

He stood still, only his tail flicking back and forth naturally every so often. He had answered her first question, but yet here were more. Why was it that most others wanted to stop and talk so often? Was there really that much appeal in making small-talk? He had never understood it. Seemed like it was just something pointless to do instead of doing something constructive like practicing things, for example, or training, or eating or anything for that matter.

But the mare asked him more questions, and she stood there looking expectant of an answer. Very well, then. He could manage an answer.

"Back." Nodding behind the mare he added, just in case his first answer wasn't very clear, "That way." He didn't speak sarcastically nor did he speak as if he was suspicious of her. He simply spoke what needed to be said, and generally nothing more. Important things he would take notes on, like the size and color of the prey he was hunting, but details like what color the daisies were blooming in this part of the forest? Well he might as well be colorblind. It didn't matter, and it wasn't worth putting in extra details where they need not be, in his opinion. Why say a really long sentence when one can express the same thing in a single word?

Grauen could feel a different kind of heat rising, the hot coursing pulse of anger deep in where others had hearts. What was this? Why would he not even answer her questions? There had to be a way to make him answer more...

She was of no use at seduction and he did not seem the type to want it. May-She paused. That was it, surely his nature--his urge to keep on going meant he was going to someone. A friend? No the drive was too much. Family? It was possible...but it seemed more like a love for something. Probably a girl, a female he loved and adored--someone he needed to get to.

She moved forward more delicately. "So is she waiting for you?" She waited to see what he said, to see if she was correct. She wanted to see if somehwo...maybe she could evoke fear in him this way.

Perhaps a pause in conversation would be noticed by most --if not by all-- but if it really was there... it flew right over Rainart's head. Social graces were... well he was barely aware of their definition. And even then, well... how was he supposed to know whether they applied to him or not? And when and where? No, it all seemed arbitrary to him, it just didn't make sense. So why rack his brain with it?

He gazed at the mare after he finished answering her first set of questions, expecting that she --like most-- would probably continue with a new set. Her eyes were so... orange, but not quite... hmm.... as if they were on... fire. Yes! It was fire that they reminded him of! But how did that happen.... Maybe it had something to do with the burning things in her mane... candles. Maybe it had something to do with them. His thoughts were cut short when she did indeed interrupt them with a new set of questions. Short, this time, surprisingly!

His head lowered slightly and tilted to one side in question. "Who?" His lips shifted, he licked them but as he did so he tried to rack his brain and figure out if he missed something as he often did. No... he couldn't recall anything that would help fill in the blanks. Once more, he added to clarify, "Who is 'she'?" He thought about asking why 'she' would be waiting for him, but first he wanted the more important (or at least interesting), answer. He was beginning to think that all females speak in some sort of unknown language... or maybe just a code or something...

Grauen felt the lights in her eyes flicker for a different reason than normal--annoyance. She was angry. How could he be so foolish and dumb. He had to know who she meant, unless she was wrong...But she wasn't wrong, she was never wrong like this.

She breathed deeply, able to contain most of the anger in her voice, "Your mate. She's the one waiting for you...right?" She could feel the chill icy tone starting to creep in.

Maybe he'd answer...maybe he wouldn't, but the truth of it was. She knew there was a she. Would threatening her safety bring something or would he be just as stoic as before? Would he acknowledge there was a girl? Or we he keep playing dumb? Would her threats have to become...something more?

Whoooooosh.

Everything changed. Not significantly, but it was as if a breeze had strolled through and taken the care to flip everything over just once to a new side. This new side was... cold. But hot at the same time. Flame. Yes, flame was there, just as it seemed to be in her eyes for a split moment. But apart from that and the warm shimmer of oranges and reds from the mare's coat everything was suddenly chilly. He swore if he could reach out and touch the mare, she would actually be cold. And there was only one thing he could identify with this contradiction of feelings: anger.

Oh, yes, he had felt and seen this before, but he had not been studying it, not following it along so it came as a bit of a surprise when it exploded like this. Well, to a hunter this was an explosion, but perhaps to prey it had been the smallest flicker of indecision. But he was not prey, and he was beginning to think that neither was she.

Lifting his head once more he straightened up a little but still stood comfortably, unperturbed by the mare's state-... question...?

"'Suppose." A small pause as his eyes narrowed to watch the mare's reactions more curious now to find out whether she was indeed prey or predator. "Didn't want to hunt with me this time." Perhaps the suavest comment he had contributed to conversation in quite some time.

The fire flickered in her eyes again as she mulled over his words. He seemed more attentive, more interested in what she was saying. Somehow, she had aroused his suspicions.

When the word hunter fell from his lips, she knew he'd caught the scent of her--of what she truly was at least a flicker anyways. She calmly smiled, "That's nice. It must be very fun to hunt with each other. Does she stay behind...often?"

It came out almost too sickly sweet, too kind...But better than too harsh maybe. There would be plenty of time to circle him to find out what his weaknesses were.

She definitely did not move like prey, and with the tones she chose to use, she certainly didn't sounds like prey. Well, regular prey, anyway. He didn't like the way she was talking, the way she was trying to get him to say something. She may prove to be prey to someone like him... if he were the sort to hunt and kill other soquili. He was not quite that far gone though. Didn't seem right to kill his own kind unless it was in self-defense or defense of others perhaps.

Rather smugly, the draft replies, "When she's had her fill." Ariadne would not be someone to come across and anger. Sure, she didn't have the temper that many kalona had, but she did have that fiery blood when it came down to a good fight or hunt. "Wouldn't be a good idea t'go looking for her." Rainart added with a smirk.

The shadows played on her side as the orbs of her eyes flickered, "I assure you that I would never go looking...not for her anyways." She could feel the corners of her mouth sneaking up into a smile. She'd had her fill, probably sleeping--unworried. He cared about her greatly. Was his view of her all lies or was it truth?

She could feel no fear in the air, so it felt distinctly real and true. But the truth was she was not here, and she could be useable. "I have never had such a partner before," she lied easily as she thought of Brutus. He was a partner of a kind, the perfect servant.
PostPosted: Wed May 30, 2012 9:37 pm

He nodded, acknowledging what may or may not be truth of her going after Ariadne. Either way, he wasn't worried. Even if she were to come across this mare by herself, she stood a very good chance of coming out on top, in Rainart's opinion anyway. And if he were there also, well there wouldn't even be a second date.

"Someone else, then?" He left his question there. It was sort of an asking of if she was looking for someone, while at the same time leaving it open for her to interpret it as him asking if she had someone else that wasn't exactly a partner or at least not the kind he has. It would ultimately be upto her how to tackle his question, but in truth he wasn't sure where this was going. His feet began to alternate holding his weight as he entertained the thought of moving on. She was interesting to him, for sure, but she wasn't prey... and she wasn't really getting to any sort of point now, was she? All she had done so far is interrogate him, ask direct questions about him having family and poke about the idea of stalking his mate. Hardly an entertaining path of conversation.

"I'm always looking for someone," she said lightly. It was the truth. She was always looking for someone else to torment, someone else to use for her own pleasures. Not that he needed to know any of that exactly. He just needed to think of her as non-threateing. Maybe, he would think that she had someone out there waiting to help her--or that she was looking for something. Whatever he wanted to think really. The truth was both, in a way.

"So no foals then yet?" She asked, the corners of her mouth tilting up again. None of the questions seemed to bother him in any way at all. He didn't seem to care or mind at anything she applied. She wasn't yet prepared to attack him verbally or physically--at least not directly.
