The heavy weight of his old gladiolus felt awkward against his hip. He hadn't taken it out since he had arrived in the Kodo region, much less practiced with it. Rory still didn't understand why his coordinator forced him to learn how to use the thing. It'll go with your costume, she said. It'll make you look like a man.....you know what I mean, she said.
Luckily it did come in handy now. He had left Pinkie back at the base with Ally and her Pikachu and had gone to Camphoreon City to relax and work on his skills. He had slowly been learning to love his life on the base but it was nice to get out in his old clothes and be alone for a while.

Rory wasn't the only one with the thought to practice swordsmanship in Camphoreon. Luke stood off to the side of the city's wide park, clear of any of the wandering pedestrians, playing children, or frolicking pokemon. The long flat of steel was sharp and perfectly capable of cutting anything that it impacted, and its wielder was always conscious of that when it came out of its sheath. At the moment, he grasped the hilt firmly in his hand, practicing lunges to polish his speed. Mieu and Tenebrae watched from the side, the two eeveelutions enjoying the sunshine more than their master's performance. Of course to them this was just the same as any other day; their task was merely to keep an eye out for their human while his focus was elsewhere.

Rory entered the park and took a look around. This place looked to be a good spot to practice for a while; nice and open. There was enough space for training and for people to enjoy themselves, he noted spotting kids over on the opposite edge of the park. Out of the corner of his eye he spotted the sheen coming from a glint of metal. He blinked and turned towards the area it was coming from to find a guy practicing his lunges while a strange colored Flareon and Umbreon looked on.

Though Mieu was distracted watching his master's practice, Tenebrae's ears folded forward alertly at the sound of an approach. He summed up the stranger quickly and critically, honey eyes lingering at the familiar form at his hip. Its form was different, but its resemblance to Lord Luke's own sheath was too uncanny to overlook, and the possibility that this unknown individual was approaching his human while bearing a weapon was too dangerous to ignore. He rose to his feet with a bark to attract the swordsman's attention and direct it toward the stranger.
Luke fluidly exited his motion at Tenebrae's call, and he followed the Umbreon's gaze to the recent arrival. A faint suspicion passed through his eyes, but he made no move to challenge or question the other male. For all he knew, after all, the guy was just passing through anyway.

Rory heard the Umbreon bark and looked around. Nothing seemed to be out of sorts; he wondered what set the Umbreon off. He noticed a man with flame red hair look down at the pokemon when it barked and tried to remember if he had seen the other man around the HQ. Maybe he would be willing to spar with him. It had been a while since Rory had a sparring partner.
He took a deep breath and headed in the direction of the man and the pokemon.

Well, if he was passing through, he was passing through straight in Luke's direction. The way the stranger had noticed him and his pokemon, though, led to the conclusion that he indeed had some kind of business with him. This was sort of an awkward situation, though. What was he supposed to do? Say hi? He waited expectantly, and with a degree of hesitation, before he was distracted by the sudden forward motion of a teal and white shape. Mieu, far more friendly than his master and his eeveelution companion, moved to meet the newcomer with a sweet "faaa" in greeting, leaving Tenebrae to breathe an exasperated sigh and Luke to call a warning to the Flareon, "Hey, thing! Don't just go off on your own!"

Rory heard the pokemon call and stopped in his tracks when he saw the Flareon start running his way. He smiled slightly at the pokemon and bent down to pet it when it was close enough.
"Look at that coat. You must have all the other Flareons after you looking like that" he commented as he looked the Flareon over. The teal and white coloring looked amazing on its coat. He wondered where the trainer had gotten it.
When he heard the trainer call to the pokemon, Rory bristled. Who would call any pokemon that was partnered with them a 'thing'?

Mieu, in recognition of the compliment, beamed brightly and answered with a happy "fieuuu." It wasn't often they were approached by others while their master was doing his sword training. This made things much more interesting!
In the past, Luke might have waited to see what happened before bothering to interfere - if he interfered at all. Knowing what he did about just how safe Camphoreon was, though, he did not wait long before following after his runaway Flareon. He came to a stop a few meters from the stranger, meeting blue eyes with his own of green, a critical glint to his gaze and tone to his words, "Sorry, he's like that." Overly-friendly, that is. Luke wasted no words reprimanding the fire-type; Tenebrae already had that underway, a disapproving series of quiet sounds bringing Mieu to lower his head in apology.

Rory raised an eyebrow at the redhead as he stood up. First he calls his own pokemon a thing and then apologizes for it being friendly? Since when was having a loving pokemon partner a bad thing? He watched as the Umbreon reprimanded the Flareon and saw the teal and white fox-like creature's face fall.
"Why are you apologizing?" Rory asked as he attempted to mask the hint of anger in his voice.

"Huh?" The question was confusing, and Luke sensed that he was being accused of doing something wrong. He became indignant himself as a result. "Well I dunno - maybe 'cause not everyone wants some random pokemon running up to them for attention? For all I know you were in the middle of something and his running up to say 'hi' for no reason messed up your schedule. Sorry for trying to be considerate, I guess."
Tenebrae winced at the human's tone. Considerate indeed.

Rory tried to hold his temper in check. Considerate? Where was his considerate for his pokemon when he tried to call him back? He was amazed at the Flareon's loving personality with having this guy as his trainer.
"But what about the way you address him?" Rory pointed to the Flareon. He couldn't let it go unspoken. He had been raised to respect the creatures that humans trained to fight in their place. "Is it considerate to label your partner a thing?"

Luke raised an eyebrow, somewhat taken aback that a perfect stranger would be so offended by the way he talked to his own pokemon. He shrugged, "He doesn't mind it." Besides, it was less embarrassing then randomly calling out some cutesy name like Mieu. "And it's not like I call him that all the time or anything. Just when he's being annoying." Like he often did.
Mieu glanced up at the two humans apologetically, vaguely aware that he bore some fault for the tension between then. But what was there that he could do about it now?

Rory took a deep breath and tried to calm down after all it wasn't his problem. If the pokemon was happy with his trainer and how he was treated there was nothing he could do. He looked down at the Flareon's apologetic face once more and pet the top of his head.
"Maybe a nickname instead? Does he have a nickname?" Rory asked curiously.

The fire-type nuzzled into the hand that reached down to pet him. He liked this human; he was a nice human!
"A nickname?" Luke was silent for a brief moment, as if trying to call up the memory of the nickname. More likely, though, he was attempting to find a way to avoid having to tell such an embarrassingly cute name to a stranger. He could think of nothing. "Well it's... He's Mieu."
As though verifying his address, the named followed up with an energetic "fieuu!"

"Mieu?" He ran the name through his head as he continued petting the friendly pokemon. Mieu's coat was soft to the touch, but not as soft as it could have been. Rory brushed that thought away quickly; not all trainers groomed their pokemon like coordinators did. "It fits him."
