xxxxxxxxxxxSomewhere, in the deep reaches of space, there floats an asteroid. Yes, there are hundreds of thousands (even millions), but this isn’t any ordinary asteroid. Built into the side of one seemingly unassuming space rock, is a seemingly unassuming bar (tavern, saloon, pub, what-have you). Simple in appearance, it is home to a rag-tag bunch of beings that are simply making a living.

xxxSolitarySirenxxxxxxxxGreetings traveler, I am SolitarySiren, your gracious host for this lovely little RP. You may call me Siren, Soli, Cheese, or Si. I have been known to respond to many more things, but that’s besides the point. Anyway, this is a RP that is LOOSELY based off an out of print RPG called The Tales of the Floating Vagabond. How might this work? Well, you’ll just have to read and find out, then, won’t you? So, sit back, relax and please keep all hands, arms, limbs, and appendages inside the thread at all times.

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. Oops. Wrong record.

Space. Claustrophobic in its expanses it is a thick blanket of blackness speckled with light. In a forgotten time, beings had always dreamed of exploring space and as time progressed, technologies progressed that made this possible. And as the new frontiers opened, businesses began to boom. This is not one of them.

The Space Dust Saloon was opened roughly twenty years ago, and its age is starting to show. And, after a few change of hands, the bar has fallen in the hands of one woman. Who doesn’t really want it but she tries her best to keep the doors open for business.

While many of the patrons visit the bar for a drink and to refuel not only their ships but their bodies, some bring their problems with them. Growing around a rough and tumble sort of crowd, this woman took it upon herself to found a group of Bounty Hunter/Mercenaries, these members not only comprise the group, but also the staff of the Space Dust Saloon.

Every adventure beings within the confines of the four walls of the Saloon, every adventure ends somewhere completely different, but as always, adventures are had. And, at the end of the day, the staff returns to the Space Dust Saloon to settle down and serve their patrons. After all, Customer Service is key.

“Order up a mug of ale; fancy yourself a shot of tequila? What about a nice pina colada? Well, the Space Dust Saloon is just the place for you! With its wide selection of drinks and snacks it will keep you coming back for more. Coupled with its friendly and attentive wait staff the Space Dust Saloon boasts a record of excellence among the galaxies. The Saloon has it all! Atmosphere, drinks and fun! All you have to do is find us. We’re located within the asteroid belt of Bodes Galaxy. Come visit us today!”

The Space Dust Saloon is carved into the side of a free floating asteroid. It is a small structure in which food, drinks, and advice can be served. It is the permanent home to a handful of staff members and boasts a trans-dimensional teleportation device that sits along one of its walls. Now, this device can seemingly zap in anyone, from any century, from any galaxy and any dimension. It was first used as a way to increase popularity of the place, and although it is still active, it might do more harm than good.

Aside from serving the humble patron who had flown in off the beat and path, Space Dust is home to a band of mercenaries that call themselves The Knights of Phoenix First. They also work as the routine staff of the Saloon. They serve drinks, cook food, clean, entertain; the typical sort of work. However, after hours, they are normally confronted with an array of problems. Their patrons have a habit of dumping their worries onto the tender, who will (for a price), volunteer to help said patron. This often leads to all sorts of odd happenings and violent encounters, or might lead them to the land of plush pillows and gum drops. It all depends on what sort of being walks through that trans-dimensional teleporter.

The Space Dust Saloon

The Saloon itself is of a modest size, maximum capacity of 100 patrons, though it is very seldom that full capacity is met. The exterior is solid, of course it has to be, and the interior is rather worn with age. Hardwood floors desperately need to be refinished and tables and chairs that look very close to the end of their lives. The bar is made of a rare sort of wood, and is the only thing kept polished, and behind it all sorts of bottles and glasses sit on a wall of shelves.

In the corner, there is a stage and small sound unit, and anyone who is gutsy enough to step on it can feel free to entertain. Just be aware of the dangers: if the owner doesn't like you, you're out. There is only one small unisex bathroom in the space, but due to lack of patronage it doesn't seem to be a problem.

The kitchen and store rooms are forbidden to patrons, the kitchen has a back staircase that leads upstairs to the bedrooms of the staff, but few have seen those as well.

Through the windows on the far wall, the deep reaches of space allow a perfect backdrop to this poor desolate space.

A mash-up of people's favorite characters, ripped from their homeworlds, now working as Mercs/Bar personnel--going to missions on strange worlds?

Um, AWESOME.

I'm in.

Indeed.
It leaves a lot of wiggle room for people.

That is awesome. I had a setting like this once in a novel. Could possibly pull a character from that project, provided I knew what exactly was possible (that novel was crazy imaginative...)

Well, the bar is meant to be the backdrop.
Just gives us a starting point and a place to come back and re-group.

The missions need to be really collaborative in order to work.
I figure we could rotate through people for different missions.

With the trans-dimentional teleporter it leaves a lot of possibilities.

With the setting, people could even drop in established characters from other RPs as well.

But, I'm a little apprehensive about 'tavern' style RPs. My past experiences with them have been rather boring and tedious as the things tends to end up quite stagnant quickly.
So, my question iiis, how would you keep this RP fresh and exciting?

Wellllll.
I was planning for the bar just to be the backdrop.
Maybe for downtime.

But, the teleporter is responsible for bringing people in to hire them for the missions.
I'm pretty sure in a space-age era robots could keep it running pretty well letting the characters to go off and do crazy things.

Strictly tavern based RPs can get rather boring very quickly.
I dunno if you read my intro post, but I started RPing in a chatroom called the Outlaw Star Cafe. A lot of times, that was just the gathering point for all the characters, then we'd go off and write our own stories, but we'd all end up back at the cafe for the next round.

Like 'home base' or something? Yeah that could work quite well smile

Soooo, this would be like a series of mini RPs featuring the same cast? Each Mission being in a different setting with a different plot?

Yes! That's a very good way of putting it.

Think like Cowboy Bebop or something.
Bounty missions
Personal missions
Interwoven characters.
Story weaving.

It has the potential to be awesome.
It failed the time I tried though, because the RPers I found had....
Dissenting opinions of how things really worked.

Well, this is awesome.

Last time I spent forever bumping my ooc thread in barton town.

So, anybody have any character ideas?

I made a character a long time ago who I'd love to be able to use again.

=/ I'm confused... What's the plot of the rp? What's the overall goal of the rp? You've got a setting... but that's it. Unless I missed something.

But this just gave me a really cool idea... ninja
