It had taken a lot of effort. Marie had been running around the city like a headless chicken these past couple weeks, spreading the word, making plans, and organizing the preparation efforts. At long last though, it was ready: The First Annual Mardi Gras Picnic.

Set up in the park were several tables, a couple of them laden with a variety of Cajun food, including a large, centrally displayed King Cake. The area looked like an explosion of purple, green, and gold, including Marie, who was happily decked out in a rather gaudy toga.

“ Millie! Millie dear, do ya' know how to work dis contraption?”

Someone had kindly loaned Marie a music system for the event, but Marie would be the first to admit that she didn’t know how to work it, or the iPod it came with. She figured it wouldn’t be a problem though, as surely the promise of free food would lure in some young person more technologically inclined then she was.

“ Oh, dis is gonna be grand!”

Mardi Gras 2012
The main set-up is in the park, and includes a lot of food and music (once someone turns it on) and a costume contest. Ballot boxes are set up to receive costume votes, and towards the end of the picnic Marie will counts and announce the winner, crowning them King or Queen of Mardi Gras.

No rain, no snow nor wind or storm was going to keep Gwendolyn Caspian from enjoying a good party, and no could the cold. The promise of great Cajun food, King Cake, and yet another chance to dress up made the hassle of getting out of bed and downing the medicine worth the trip, and though it meant sneaking out of the house (to escape her over protective sister), she had found a bathroom to change into her costume.

Not her Senshi costume, though she secretly hoped that there was no need for that. No, instead, she had brought a costume that she had been secretly working on behind Maddy's back. So many weeks spent saving up supplies, putting off homework and even a few hours sacrificed from her video games, all to make her own Mr. Mistoffelees costume.

"I don't care if it has nothing to do with Mardi Gras," Gwen told herself, applying the last bit of her costume and stepping out of the bathroom. "But who knows how to party more than the original Conjuring Cat?"

She knew who, but she had resigned to the fact that she couldn't afford to have made a Rum Tum Tugger costume. It was too complicated, and Mr. Mistoffelees felt that her hair style as more suited for the magical cat instead. She approached the table, oogling at all of the great looking food and unable to stop gushing over it. "Jambalaya, Andouille gumbo, and that's just the START of it!"

She especially gushed over that King Cake, and she regretted that she'd have to eat it last. That was when she noticed Marie was having trouble with the sound system. She couldn't help but butt in to the conversation, not even taking the time to introduce herself before offering her services. "Hey, you look like you're having trouble with that. Mind if I help?"

Gwen waited to see if she needed or wanted her help, telling her stomach to shut up long enough to at least get an answer before diving into the food. She was sure there'd be enough left...

Millicent was at the park, happy to help Marie, after all, the lady had watched out for her while her mom was in the hospital for those few days. She was dressed up in a fun little dress and her hair had a few feathers in it. She looked up at the woman and laughed. “Yeah, I can turn it on!”

The child ran over, inspecting the machine for a few moments, then, after pressing a few buttons and hooking the iPod into the dock that was there for it, music began to blare from the speakers. The sound startled Millicent and she jumped backwards, then just laughed at herself and ran to Marie.

“Music is working, Marie! Do you want it louder than that, or should I turn it down a little?” She was very excited for this party, even if her sniffles hadn’t yet gone away. It was so colorful, and there was a lot of purple, her favorite color. If any sort of event or party allowed her to have and wear purple, she loved it. No matter what it was. The food seemed to be wonderful, judging by its smell.

She had dragged Jett to the party with her, and smiled when someone else walked up. It was Gwen!

"HI! Welcome to the party!" She called, grinning from ear to ear.

Gwen was taken by surprise when the stereo she was standing next to suddenly came to life, the blaring trumpets catching her completely off guard and causing her to nearly fell onto her butt. She was lucky to catch herself, no doubt thanks to years in gymnastics or perhaps her Cats costume played a factor into that, and she moved away from the stereo, walking into Millicent's line of sight as her ears rung.

"Hi! Welcome to the party!" Said the girl, catching Gwen's attention by her bright outfit, as well as her even brighter smile. She seemed extremely happy, too happy, and Gwen merely thought that she was getting in the spirit of Mardi Gras.

"Thanks, I feel welcomed! I arrive and BAM, music! Looks like you have that under control..." Gwen smiled, not realizing who she was talking to at all. She looked at the food around them, not wanting to be rude but unable to silence her stomach any longer. "So wheres the line for the food? I can't wait to dig in... it all looks so good!"

“ Dat’s perfect baby, thank ya’.”

The music started playing and Marie started swaying; now this was more like it! Couldn’t have a party without music. And people. Speaking of, there was a people!

“ Hey dere! Dere ain’t no line yet sweetie, so you can dive right on it. Come on!”

Whistling along with the music, Marie produced a bandana from somewhere within the bosom of her toga– an excellent place to store things, she found – and, waving it in the air, did a little second line over to the food table.

“ Jambalya, red beans, gumbo, cole slaw, ‘tater salad, biscuits… well, grab a plate a dig around! I’m sho you’ll find somethin’ ya’ like. And later,” Marie drew herself up, seemingly proud of what she was about to say, “ Later, I’m boilin’ crawfish.”

Anyone that knew anything about crawfish would likely find that statement impressive, because getting any amount of live crawfish to Destiny City? Not an easy feat. Marie was just magic like that.

Though Millicent had dragged Jett to the party, that didn’t mean he was particularly thrilled to be there. He had offered to drive on a whim; being home alone was driving him stir crazy and with Raven being sick, he couldn’t go over and bother her. Despite attending a Mardi Gras party, he wore a barely affiliated ensemble; he was clad in no costume but instead a pair of jeans and a white shirt, accented with a purple vest with shiny golden buttons and a green tie. His hair was accented by a cute little hairpiece Millicent had made for him--a combination of green and purple and yellow feathers with two strings of beads--and glitter. So much glitter. It certainly was not his style, but...how could he say no when she'd put so much effort into it?

Dressing up wasn’t really a priority, but Jett didn’t want to stick out against the crowd too much. He had let Millicent run along and stayed with the car for a few moments longer to make a call and send a few last minute texts to Raven. He could hear the music from the parking lot before he wandered over to the heavily decorated party.

Upon entering the area, Jett was met with the pleasant aroma of food—a sudden reminder that he had skipped lunch. Pulling out a stick of gum, he slid it into his mouth as he made his way over to Millicent, holding out a second stick for her. “Finished talking with Raven,” he informed the girl, glancing around as he chewed on the gum. If Jett were one to feel odd, he might have been a bit embarrassed that he didn’t strive to introduce himself to the woman hosting the party or any of the other guests while on his way to Millie, though instead, he just seemed rather laid back about it all—if not a bit bored with everything, too. “She said to have fun and keep your top on,” Jett added with a little smirk, resisting the urge to ruffle Millie’s hair.

Though Jett didn’t approach anyone as he held out the stick of gum for Millie, his eyes scanned the food curiously, wondering if some of the odder looking dishes were even edible.

Micah had her thumb on the pulse of Brony News. And this week in the community there was outrage. Complete and utter disgust with what was being dubbed by some "Derpy-caust" and "Derp-ocolypse". And Micah couldn't blame them. The idea that someone who didn't understand what Derpy meant trying to take their beloved klutz away from them was... well it was disgusting. She wasn't a cruel parody of the mentally handicapped, but rather a reminder that everyone messes up, but that makes them no less wonderful. A symbol of happiness in the face of adversity. A beacon of determination before impossibility. She messed up. Constantly. But she didn't stop. And everyone loved her.

It was that idea that spawned her costume. Her own protest of this atrocity. Don't take away our Derpy. Oh god, please don't take her.

The park smelled like super delicious food.

That's all the invitation that a certain manx cat needed to join in the festivities. Of course, she really didn't know what specific festivities were waiting for her. All she knew was that there was a lot of food here that people would have to be willing to share with a cute kitty such as herself.

Her ears did perk up specifically the moment a familiar voice pretty much advertised all the different foods that were being served at the moment. Following said voice, the little cat soon enough found herself rubbing up against a pair of ankles that belonged to said voice. However, Marie was not a cat this time, so it was almost like meeting the woman again for the first time.

Dressing up for Mardi Gras, wasn't really a priority to Kallista, she just went to enjoy the music and enjoy herself. Perhaps meet some new friends. She blew out a breath and looked around at the crowds, it was her first ever Mardi Gras and she wasn't sure what was considered appropriate for this kind of festivity. So she came semi-casual, perhaps if she enjoyed herself she would go next year and be well prepared with a costume and all. She smiled lightly to herself, festivities eased her academic lifestyle and she would take every festivity that came up to take a break from her academics.

Taking a break gave her time to get some R & R time to herself out of school. She stretched and looked at the increasing number of people showing up, this would definitely a fun event to attend for anyone. Perhaps she will make some friends by the end of it.

Marie’s eyes immediately focused on the blonde boy that approached Millie. She gave him a playful, exaggerated once-over and whistled.

“ Ooo-ee! Millie my girl, I must say, you gots good taste. Who’s dis friend o’ yours?”

The large woman’s attention was briefly diverted from Millie and her friend by the sensation of something rubbing against her ankles. Looking down and spying the gray cat making its presence known, Marie grinned and dropped down to let the cat sniff at her hand.

“ Hello kitty! You smelt da food, didn’t ya’? If you a nice kitty, I’ll fix ya’ a plate.”

Glancing back up at the blonde, she grinned and added, “ I’m sure Millie’ll vouch for da fact dat all my food is at least edible. More fillin’ den gum anyway, ‘n you skinny things need fillin’ food.”

Millicent was absolutely giddy with how this party was shaping out to be. She saw Micah and gave a happy little wave, then put the stick of gum into her mouth, chewing it happily. “Oh! Marie, this is my big brother, Jett! Jett, this is my friend Marie…she was the one who watched me when my mom got hurt and ended up in the hospital…”

Well…Marie was a good thing that came out of that awful time. She really was. The woman was absolutely delightful, and it wasn’t hard to imagine her as a third mother, after her own, and Jett’s mother, of course.

She looked down to Marie’s ankles, and her eyes lit up even more. It was *********! It was really *********! She grinned and knelt down, smiling. “Hi kitty! Did you come to the party for some fun and food? Or did you just come here to be completely adorable?”

She didn’t want to give it away that she knew the cat, but…she hoped that ********* would come and love on her despite her not calling her by her name. She hoped.

The child looked up at Marie once more, then nodded. “She does have really good cooking, guys. Really, really good cooking! I like eating what she makes, it’s a lot better…Then the food that you can get in other places…”

Azzo had been attempting to avoid getting sick for the past while after the flu pandemic seemed to have broken out. However, as weird as it was, everything seemed to be going rather peachy. No symptoms, in fact he was fit as a fiddle. Which struck him as slightly odd since it seemed a great deal of people were getting sick.

He had stopped to read a flyer when he ran into Lil, it'd been ages since he'd seen her. In fact the Mardi Gras picnic sounded like just the place to catch up, maybe even Aurora would feel up to coming. He wasn't sure but the promise of free food was enough to entice Azzo, so he'd mentioned it to Lil, who was standing beside him as he read the poster aloud.

Which is how he ended up going to the party dressed up, in what he considered an interesting outfit for the occasion tossing together his Hatter costume from Halloween and some ideas he'd gotten from the internet based on the Venice Carnival. In the end he was probably pretty unrecongizable by most, which is why he shot a quick picture to Aurora via text just in case, and luckily met up with Lil on the way. Of course she'd be able to tell from his voice who he was.

"So, have you ever been to a Mardi Gras party?" He asked curiously, surely the picnic would be interesting right? As they walked towards the location of the picnic he could already hear the music and see people gathered. At least Azzo wasn't one to worry about being over dressed for the occasion.

There was a certain mixture of pleasure and horror at being whistled at by an older woman, and Jett wasn’t quite sure what to make of Marie. It was one thing to charm ladies his age, or to sweet talk an older woman, though when he was suddenly the center of unwanted attention. “Is she, now?” Jett asked in an only slightly strained conversational tone. “Well, then.”

He forced a smile to his lips—amiable enough to count as charming, yet hardly as enthusiastic as the smile he used when he wanted something. A part of him wanted to correct Millicent and inform Marie that he was not, in fact—biologically, at least—her big brother, though it seemed like a trivial point to make. They didn’t look the least bit alike and he assumed that if Marie had watched Millicent than he knew that Bellatrix was not old enough to have been his mother.

“That was very nice of her. Marie, was it?” he inquired rhetorically. Not wanting to be rude, he extended his hand to the woman. “Pleasure to meet you.” He didn’t suppose he had to introduce himself again given that Millicent had already tossed around his name. Despite both Marie’s reassurance of her food—and Millicent’s vouch—he wasn’t sure he wanted to touch anything that looked too foreign. No, thank you, he liked his nice, normal steak and potatoes.

When the large woman dropped down to give the feline attention, the feline was more than willing to give some back of her own. She completely skipped the whole sniffing thing and was already rubbing her cheeks up against the lady's hand. She managed to catch a few people calling her the name Marie, which as she recalled, was the same name as that large brown cat she had met a while back. The way this woman spoke did sound quite similar to how the large brown cat had, so it was probably her. It was nice being able to make such connections.

In reply to the mention of getting her own plate, the guardian mewled out enthusiastically. She approved of getting food. Free food!

Of course, another familiar voice spoke up. Pale green eyes flitted away towards another familiar sight. It was Millie! Not everyone feigned ignorance when it came to the manx, so the fact she had called her 'kitty' was actually pretty clever in the feline's mind. From her current spot at Marie's hand, the feline replied with a few more trilling mewls to confirm she was there to do all of the above. Fun, food, and being adorable was not all that hard to balance!

Micah had gotten good at being quiet when she approached someone. She had to, with her patrols. Sneaking up on youma and negas. She'd learned to control her breathing, where she stepped, and how softly to put her feet down.

She practiced this on Millie and Jett now. Carefully she snuck up on the both of them, but her main target was Millie. Micah had grown oddly affectionate with her master and little partner. Like Millie had entered at exactly the right time, trying her best to fill the void left by Lesath, though maybe she didn't know what she was doing.

"It must be destiny, you and I meeting up like this, Master," she chirpped, dropping to her knees and placing her chin gently on Millie's little shoulder. "You too, teach!"
