Personality:
personality blurb goes here

[+] Loyal
Peregrin would never purposefully turn his back on someone he considers a friend. Though it takes a lot to gain his trust, he would never dream of backstabbing or even gossiping about someone he holds in high regards. Having grown up in a pack, where everyone was close and worked together to provide for the pack, it is sometimes difficult for him to understand that human society is often full of deceitful people who lie and cheat to make their way in the world. He believes in more honest and straightforward methods, and would never choose to be successful at the cost of harming others. He would rather remain true to himself, and to the values he learned from both his pokemon family and his human friends.

[+] Protective
Peregrin is very protective of the ones he loves, and sometimes the sentiment carries over toward people he doesn't know. The ranger Grin befriended taught him the joy that accompanied protecting his home and all of its inhabitants. Generally, if Peregrin is faced with a situation in which someone weak is being threatened, he will jump in to assist. This is extended towards pokemon more than anything (since Grin has not had much contact with humans yet), but in truth he would attempt to aid just about anyone who required his help. Similarly, he will not hesitate to fight off the offenders of the crime being committed. This characteristic can obviously have its downsides at times. He can be a bit overbearing with those who are close to him, and sometimes misunderstandings occur and he will try to protect those who don't need help at all. Peregrin is slowly learning to pick and choose his battles so as to make fewer mistakes, and to let small things go.

[+] possible third

[=] Contemplative
Despite being given a very wonderful gift, Peregrin does still harbor some pain about the past. That self-doubt still lingers, and he will always have his own fears and worries. He is slow to trust others, and slow to make friends. Around people he doesn't know, he is polite, but distant. He keeps others at arms length for a long time if he can't discern their intentions right away. While it does sometimes prevent him from making friends easily, it also allows him to see who is worth trusting and who isn't. He doesn't like to grant his allegiance with anyone at the drop of a hat, because when that happens he'll often give that someone his all, and he doesn't want to make bad choices only to be hurt by them later on.

[-] Predatory
Grin had a lot of trouble getting used to human living. He'll always be a predator at heart, and that often conflicts badly with his protective nature. He still gets the urge to chase small creatures, to hunt for his meals. He still does sometimes, and the only reason that he does this is because his human saw no wrong in it. It was his nature, and it was natural for his kind to hunt. Now that he is human, he has tried to wean himself off of it and to enjoy all of the human food that's available to him. Old habits die hard, unfortunately, and he has trouble sometimes not seeing smaller creatures as a potential meal. Sometimes his urges get in the way of his good intentions, and he still struggles with them when he's around certain types of pokemon or gijinka. He's tried hard to condition himself to ignore these feelings, knowing he can't rescue someone just to turn around and try to make a meal of them. He hasn't slipped yet, but a lot of factors go into this, like movement and smell. Sometimes it also relies on the response he gets when he arrives to help. Fear is a powerful motivator for him and also affects the way he deals with the problem. Around prey-creatures or Gijinka, he will often behave in a more detached manner than he usually does, knowing that if he focuses on the task at hand he can avoid giving in to the predator response. Regardless of the species of a pokemon or gijinka, if they are being threatened by a human, he will rarely ignore the situation and side with the former.

[-] Ruthless
If Grin categorizes someone as a threat or enemy, it's going to be trouble for them. If he can find a way to neutralize the threat, you had better believe he'll do so in a heartbeat, without mercy. Once you try to hurt him or someone he loves, he loses all compassion for the perpetrator and will go all out to make sure they don't do it again. He is not above fighting dirty or using underhanded moves to get the edge over an opponent. This is also something that has carried over from his wild days, and is part of his nature as a 'dark' type pokemon; he has few qualms over killing when he's sure he's doing the right thing, which is usually protecting himself, a friend, or his territory. Unfortunately in the human world, violence isn't always the answer, and he's been forced to learn a lot about talking things out. It still carries into this realm; if he comes across someone doing things he doesn't agree with he can be very hard-hearted at times. He is slowly learning to see things from multiple perspectives, and not just his own.

[-] possible third

Strengths:
- Heightened sensory perception ; Grin has retained an excellent sense of scent and hearing, as well as the ability to see in the dark. In some instances these abilities have become somewhat of a hindrance in the noisy human world.

- Navigation ; When it comes to being in the wilderness, Grin has an excellent sense of direction and also knows many survival tactics, even in his new body.

-

Weaknesses:
- technology; Most human gadgets are beyond Peregrin's understanding, despite their much-touted usefulness. Though he isn't too bad with the simplest of human inventions(number dial telephones, for instance), he simply cannot seem to get the hang of cellphones or computers or the complicated watch contraptions that so many of his human acquaintances have. People have tried to teach him on multiple occasions, only to have to give up later.

- Cities/heavily populated areas; Peregrin's heart will always belong to the forest, and with that in mind, going into big cities is very daunting for him. The crowds, the noise, and the smells are all overwhelming, and he tries to avoid such places if he can. He's tried his best to overcome this problem, but still needs a bit of work.

-

Other Quirks:
Likes: Sunny days, chasing small creatures, practicing with his bow, being in nature.
Dislikes: Loud places, loud people, having his tail pulled, wearing clothes, dishonesty, liars.

History

Life
His earliest memory would always be one of emerging from a very dark, warm place and into an endlessly beautiful world of green, full of birdsong and more interesting sights and sounds than he could ever count. It was a lush paradise, unseen by the likes of mankind, and vastly diverse in its population. For Peregrin, it was the perfect place to begin one's life.

Peregrin was raised in a massive forest within a pack of his own kind, alongside a handful of siblings. All of them were instilled early on with the value that was so intrinsic to his species; loyalty. A deep, fierce, unwavering loyalty to his family and pack members. He lived and flourished there, growing into a strong young poochyena, fearless in his youth and bold in demeanor. Their pack claimed a sizable territory within the forest, and they were respected and feared as the predators they were. Though they were a fearsome bunch, they knew little conflict, merely doing what was needed for survival.

Their simple life was not fated to last forever, unfortunately. Though their forest was visited regularly by trainers and other travelers moving through, a new threat made itself apparent to its inhabitants. A band of unscrupulous poachers had moved in, and saw fit to capture as many pokemon as they could get their hands on. They were not like the young trainers that came through from time to time, who often ended up befriending or capturing the pokemon that lived in the forest. They were a cruel bunch, using traps and gadgets to subdue their unwary prey.

Despite his speed and clever ways, even Peregrin was not immune to capture. He fell victim to a well placed trap one day, and though his pack mates struggled to free him, no one could bite through the mesh of the wire trap. The situation seemed hopeless, until an unexpected savior arrived. A group of rangers had come to combat the trouble, once the rumors of the poachers had reached them, and it was a ranger who had found Grin and set him free. Indebted to the man, and curious about his intentions, the little poochyena formed a sort of friendship with him. The rangers were different from other humans. They did not make pokemon battle or try to bend them to their will; they sought only temporary cooperation in order to achieve goals that would benefit everyone.

It was for this reason, perhaps, that allowed Peregrin to become close to the man, whose name was Leo. He could be with him without restraint and be able to return to his pack at the end of the day. They became fast friends; it was Leo who ended up giving Peregrin his name, affectionately shortened to 'Grin', for his wolfish smirk. Peregrin recognized that they shared the same foe, the poachers, and devoted himself to aiding the ranger and his friends in ridding the forest of them. It was a long process, a game of cat and mouse during which Grin and Leo learned much about each other, and grew during their adventures. Grin would eventually end up evolving with Leo's help, maturing into a strong mightyena.

It was on the very edge of their victory that tragedy struck. The rangers had pinpointed the poachers' lair after months spent tracking them down. They were cornered, no where to go...nothing left to do but fight. The conflict that erupted would leave the poachers thwarted in the end, but not without losses to both sides. Leo, the ranger Grin had grown so close to lost his life in the fight. In the flurry of pokemon and weaponry, he had simply been in the wrong spot at the wrong time; unable to rescue the man he'd come to see as one of his closest friends.

Dream
Peregrin fled into the woods once it was over. With the poachers gone, life in the forest swiftly returned to normal, but the inner turmoil the mightyena experienced afterwards was horrible and intense. He missed his friend terribly, and blamed himself for Leo's death. Leo's friends had called out to him, begged him to return, but he did not answer their calls. Grin would attempt to forget his sorrow, and try to go back to living the way he had before the poachers had come. Try as he might, however, the impact of his friendship with the human was too large to be forgotten so easily. He slipped into a sluggish state, riddled with guilt, wishing he had done things different.

As time dragged on, he began to sleep more often. Much of the time his sleep was undisturbed, blissful stretches of nothingness that allowed him some amount of peace. It was on one gentle summer day, though, that something different happened. It seemed as if the moment he'd drifted off, he'd awoke again. He was in an unimaginably vast field, parts of it enveloped in mist. There was a pink-haired man there who called out to him, and Grin was so overcome with the peacefulness of the place he approached as if the stranger were an old friend. The conversation that followed was long, and pain had crept into parts of it, but at the end, an offer was made, and Peregrin had come to a realization.

Leo would not have wanted Grin to waste away in sadness. Hadn't he taught him better than that? He'd have wanted his friend to live on. He would have wanted Grin to be happy. The pink-haired man was not offering happiness, per say, but he was offering change, and a chance to make a difference. A bigger difference than he could ever hope to make in his current form. Peregrin wanted to help those in need, didn't he? To make the ranger proud. Of course he did, yes! The Mightyena made his choice, and accepted the offer to become human.

After
Peregrin awoke with a start in his new form, completely naked, save for the thick black and grey cloak wrapped around him. Though it was unsettling, he remembered the dream, and the offer that he had accepted. As luck would have it, he managed to stumble into a pair of travelers who quickly helped him to the ranger station. Leo's friends were in shock when he revealed his name to them. Despite his new form, he was welcomed back with open arms. Apparently cases like his had been occurring across the land, and where else would he be able to go now? Peregrin would quickly come to the painful understanding that he could never really fit in with his pack again (even though they could still understand him). Even his own family members could not seem to understand what had happened to him, try as he did to explain. Grin did not allow the discovery to eat away at him. He tried instead to investigate the new world which he found himself in, and was ultimately grateful to have assistance from the rangers.

His new family fed him, and dressed him. After he had acclimated to an extent, one of Leo's closer friends presented him with a gift, something that almost caused him to break down and weep; Leo's bow. They had recovered it after the show down with the poachers and had kept it in his memory. It only seemed fitting that Grin have it. Leo himself, and several of the others, were excellent archers. They would teach him, too, if he wanted, and of course he did.

The training helped him get used to his new body. By the time he could fluently speak the human's tongue, he'd grown curious of the world he'd become apart of. With the his friends' blessings, he began to wander, wanting to see more, to learn more, and to help those who needed it along the way.
