Hazzan Octbre was on the prowl, her eyes narrowed attentively as she stalked through the bookstore aisles. There was a new edition of the FLARP rulebook out, and as the most innovative Clouder in Four Fronds (a self-proclaimed title), she needed to be the first troll on the block to get it. The chubby tealblood was eager to see what new scenarios this latest revision would help her to craft - no doubt that Frossa and Alifax would eventually grow tired of her if she didn't keep up with the latest trends.
Clouding was extremely competitive, at least in Hazzan's mind. If she didn't keep her game at least as exciting as the next closest group then she risked losing her players. She dragged a finger along the shelf, trying to pinpoint the exact spot where the book ought to be, nestled between the previous editions and the first expansion book. (She had all of those, pfff.)
There was a quite obvious gap. Hazzan let out a growl of frustration and spun on her heels, intent on finding a manager and hassling them until they explained to her why the book wasn't where it was supposed to be. It was a brand new edition, and clearly they'd had it in stock at some point - this was the official franchise outpost, and in New Hemisect to boot!
"This is unacceptable," grumbled Hazzan, channeling some of Frossa's grouchiness as she crossed her arms over her ample torso. If the store was going to hang a dozen posters promoting the latest edition, then they'd better have more than enough copies of the book! It was only reasonable.

Vremea was excited.
Oh, was she excited! She couldn't wait to arrive at the store- she was so anxious to buy the new rule book, to leaf her hands through the oages and spend hours reading and rereading the text, analyzing every single paragraph, memorizing every single word written in the book.
And then she'd probably, most likely, do the exact same thing again. Minus the memorizing, since it was already done. She couldn't wait.
Seeing the store within distance, she could easily spot a few large posters on it's facade, making her even more excited then the usual. Just the pure excitement was getting to her- Books would do that to her sometimes.
Arriving at the store and opening the door, she patted in her bag, just checking to see if her wallet was there one last time. Yes, it was– she could let out a breath of relief. If she had to go back home after traveling all the way here just because she a), lost the money, or b), left it at home, she would probably freak. She looked around the store with her usual pout, eyeing the bookshelves and going to walk over to the books to get a closer look- but she bumped into a troll who was walking towards the cashier. "Oh, my apologies," she said, noticing the trolls blood color- a tealblood. She inched away slightly and almost winced, somewhat intimidated even without knowing her personality or anything about her. Middlebloods weren't as bad as highbloods with the fear she had- but they were bordering blue. They just... made her feel uncomfortable. Not as much as a regular blueblood-purpleblood, but getting there.

Hazzan stumbled forward a step on impact and glanced over towards the troll who'd bumped her. It wasn't of particular importance that the girl was a yellowblood. She was not one to give heed to the hemospectrum, being close enough to the middle that it had very little impact on her life. Furthermore, she ran amok on a regular basis with one of the highest of high and the lowest of low. Between Frossa and Alifax, Hazzan had very little reason to care that someone was in the yellow.
"It's fine," she sighed, pausing momentarily to regain her sense of equilibrium. Balance restored, she took several more confident strides towards the cashier, planted her hands primly on the counter, and asked, "What kind of FLARP shop do you think you are if you haven't got the latest edition of the rulebook in stock? You've got posters all over the store but I don't see the actual book anywhere!"
Well. So much for primness. The limeblood behind the counter muttered something about going to go look for another box and disappeared into the rear of the store. Hazzan spun on her heels and gave the yellowblood a smile.
"Are you here for the new edition, too?" she asked, happy to meet what looked to be another FLARP enthusiast. "I heard there's a whole new set of rules for creating armies! And three new classes, and seven new elements of power-"
Hazzan read all the gaming magazines. All of them. She'd been dreaming of getting this book for ages, and now the chance was going to be denied to her because it was out of stock? Preposterous! "I'm Hazzan Octbre," she explained for the yellowblood's benefit. "I play clouder for the best game in Four Fronds."

Vremea couldn't help but exhale as the teal blood walked away, about to step straight to where the newest releases had been made to find the book— when she heard the same teal blooded troll yell at the cashier about the newest FLARP rulebook not being in stock. Her eyes widened slightly, and she turned around, looking over to the teal blood just as she turned around to look at her with a smile. She tensed almost instantly, almost walking away right on the spot, but again, the troll started talking again. "Oh, um," she hesitated, just wanting to leave, but decided against it. "...Yes. Yes I am," she said truthfully, and her eyes brightened when she heard the part of the three new classes and elements. Oh gog new elements she could try out and new classes this was so awesome and you're talking to a teal blood oh gog. Just thinking of hot the tealblood yelled at the cashier made her want to stop talking to her, what if she lashed out at her??? What if she threw herself in a killing fit, what if she set out to cull her what if she screamed at her what if what if what if—
STOP. Calm down. She seems friendly enough. She's a teal blood, not a purple blood. They're the crazy ones. Not her.
Hazzan Octbre. It sounded strange, but elegant, how the names flowed together. "Hello Hazzan. I'm Vremea Everai, just your average healer and/or mage. A pleasure to meet you." She allowed her pout to merge into a hesitant smile, her voice unwavering. "Me and you'll have to play sometime then!" Vremea said with bright eyes, already excited. The best clouder? That's so awesome oh gog!!
What if when you play together she tries to cull— No. Nonononono. Too friendly!!
"Where and with whom do you play? And oh gog new things— how do you know this?!" she asked curiously, her voice having a hint of an excited tone. When talking to someone who has the same tastes as you, you can't help but ignore the differences between the others and talk about it.

Luckily for Vremea, Hazzan was a pretty mellow troll. Running with Frossa Fyrste did make her sway towards playing the straight man, and it suited her just fine. "We run our game in and around Four Fronds," she explained. "It's a town a few hours from here, lakeside-like. It's nice." The nice was a tinted sort of nice, a euphemistic nice. Highblood nice. The kind of nice that Hazzan, with her middling blood color, barely qualified for. She gave Vremea a sympathetic shrug.
"I play with my friend Frossa, and sometimes Alifax joins in, which is cool, because he can light things on fire..." Strictly speaking, Alifax wasn't allowed in Four Fronds, but Frossa had a decent amount of sway owing to her highblood status. Hazzan insisted he play with them, mostly because she loved plotting for him. Having a boy - and one with magical powers, at that - on their team just made everything better.
"Do you have a regular game going where you live?" Hazzan added interestedly, already starting to envision the competitive possibilities. To Flarp properly you needed two opposing Clouders, and strictly speaking the version she played with her friends was sort of bastardized. "Maybe we could all play together sometime. That would be really cool."
Entirely awesome, really. Hazzan leaned against the counter, starting to grow mildly annoyed with the sales clerk's absence. "I've been reading the gamer issues," she explained casually. She'd been waiting for the new book for ages - it only made sense to try and get every bit of advanced information possible! "It's going to be amazing, seriously!

It was as if the higherblood didn't even notice that she was a yellowblood. As if she didn't care. This troll... Hm. Hopefully she didn't care, at least.
Four fronds?
Wasn't that where all the highbloods lived? "I've been to Four Fronds before, it was a nice place..." she paused, listening to the rest of th— fire? She visibly cringed as Hazzan said that, and her pouty-mouth turned into a straight line as she shuffled her feet around. "I really can't say I have a team. I sometimes play on my own, but it's not very fun," she said with a frown, realizing how little time she had for practically anything fun. She was going to have to change her shifts around or something to be able to have more free time.
"All of my FLARPing friends are either not interested anymore, or have done too many drastic things and ended up dead." She said this with a hanging sadness in her voice, thinking about how she had run for her life when her close friend, Karina, died with her friend against a blue blood who they had meerly bumped into.
"But maybe we could play on the same team? I'm currently not as avalible as one would think, but I will be trying to get myself out of my problems." Sure, a redblooded fire guy would be rather... scary to FLARP with, but it was for fun, something she hadn't done much in these past few weeks. Hopefully nothing would catch fire...
"The library I work at doesn't release the FLARP issues, and I usually don't have the beetles to buy the magazines, so I wait for the book to come out to surprise myself. I heard if you exchange the old one with the new one you only have to pay the money that was added to it!" She pulled out her old book from her bag, still in perfect condition, even after the millions of times she's read and re-read it. The only thing different in it was the dog ears in every page, bookmarking the many times she would want to take note of something important. "I can't wait until I get it..."
She looked to the desk, expecting the lime-green blood to come back at any moment so she could buy the book already.

Had ended up dead...? Perhaps other Flarpers ran in far more extreme circles than Hazzan. As she and Frossa and Alifax all tended to value their lives, her games were probably pedestrian compared to what Vremea was used to. Hazzan reserved all the really dangerous roles for herself. If her friends were ever at risk of grievous injury, it was because something had gone wrong. She liked to toy with the illusion of danger, and didn't mind risking herself to back up the claim.
Shaking her head, the tealblood agreed, "No, Flarping by yourself can't possibly be much fun!" Her heart went out to the other girl. Losing your gaming partners had to be a tragedy. Hazzan could only imagine - her Flarp buddies were her best friends. If anything bad were ever to happen to Frossa and Alifax... well, she'd be devastated for sure. But she'd survive.
With an exasperated sigh, she cast her eyes towards the counter again. "Yeah, I heard that, too," she said, pulling out her copy of the last edition as well. Hazzan's book was well-loved and well used. The pages were dog-eared at funny angles. Half the cover looked like it had had tea spilled on it and the other half was slightly singed (undoubtedly Alifax's doing). If Vremea were to flip it open, she would find there were notes scrawled in every imaginable margin where Hazzan had felt the need to jot down plot ideas and her own personal innovations.
"But I doubt I'm going to get anything for this," she said, completely straight-faced, as she put the book back into her satchel.
The greenblood clerk returned, and not a moment too soon. Hazzan threw her hands in the air as if to declare, Finally! and rushed forward to examine the pair of books he'd set on the counter. Identical. Glossy. Perfect. She handed the one on the bottom to Vremea and immediately started flipping through the pages of her copy, eyes going wider and wider as each new page of wonder was revealed to her.
"Ring me up!" she demanded of the clerk, reaching for the purse of beetles in her satchel. "I've got a new game to plan!"

Vremea looked to Hazzan with a solemn smile, already excited on the game she was to play with the tealblood and her friends. "This is so exciting, I cannot wait!" She said honestly– she wanted fun, and her offer was the most fun she had heard for a while.
Looking at her tattered and battered up book, Vremea could only imagine what had happened to that book. She barely took hers to the field if she ever FLARPed– too dangerous, too risky. She didn't want to loose it to buy another, nor did she want to destroy it in the rush of the game. It was too precious to her. Putting the book back in her bag, she felt around for her stone and rubbed it comfortingly. "Don't put yourself down, you just might," She said, her face returning to a pout as the limeblood returned with two books.
Her heart practically stopped.
As Hazzan handed her the second one, her eyes looked down and her smile took up her whole face.
FLARP. Book.
Amazing. It was beautiful, so amazing, she loved it, she couldn't stop herself from silently squealing. Vremea skimmed the pages quickly, and gasped a few times before closing the book reluctantly. 'Later,' she told herself, 'Later, you'll be able to enjoy it more throughly.'
She couldn't stop herself from smiling as she reached in her bag and pulled out the beetles, patiently awaiting her turn to the cash register, all the while trying her darnedest not to peek into the book.

Hazzan was right in her assumption that she would get no resale value on her old book, which was fine because she hadn't really wanted to sell it, anyway! It was full of too many memories and plots! Who knew when you would have to look up the stats of a monster her team had fought two sweeps ago? She happily paid full price and moved aside to let Vremea carry out her transaction.
Hazzan held her new book up to her face and took a long sniff - it smelled amazing. Like the promise of lots of adventures! She grinned toothily at Vremea. "Your team and my team should meet up sometime," she said. "I'd love to cloud against you."
Right now, though, she really just wanted to go get on the train back to Four Fronds and crack this book's spine open and see what kinds of amazing new gameplay innovations were in store! "So, like, I'll catch you around later?" she said, tucking the book into her satchel for safe keeping... but just for now. "Cuz, like, I've gotta get going or I won't get home until really late and my Lusus won't like that at all."
Koaowl would go full-out dropbear on her, she bet. Hazzan gave her new friend a small wave and spun on her heel with surprising dexterity for someone of her... chub. "Seeya!" she called as she left the store.
