While his brothers were off playing - gaining the courage to venture further and further away form their parents - Mikaeus stayed close to the warm and comforting presence of his parents. He was just a few days out of the basket now, and he had yet to learn to speak on his own. He stepped around on his wobbly legs, putting his head up and sniffing the wind - silently taking in all the scents and sensations that flowed over the breeze. His mane was short yet, but still rustled in the spring wind and it made him smile. His little white tail wagged happily as he hobbled back over to his mother and leaned against her side, feeling her warmth.

Laikaylah nuzzled her son affectionately, looking down over him proudly. She nibbled at his short mane, untangling a few wind-blown knots. She looked out in the distance, also keeping a close eye on her other two colts that seemed pleased as punch to be frolicking and playing just a short while away. She frowned just a bit, looking back down to her son who seemed content to be nuzzled close by her side. He didn't look fearful or timid: just content.

Glacier was happy as a clam as he also surveyed his beautiful trio of children. They were so.... perfect. Colorful and spotty and healthy. Three colts. Three beautiful, perfect, stallions-in-the-making. He couldn't have asked for better. He felt truly blessed by the spirits. Winter had passed, it was now the dawn of spring: the sun was bright and the wind was cool and the flowers were just starting to bloom and here he was: standing in a pristine field watching his children playing.
Well, two of them were playing. Mikaeus, the purple one, was staying awfully close. Was he scared? Timid? Glacier stepped over to him and nuzzled his face. But then, gently and encouraging, nudged him towards his brothers.

Little Mikaeus felt the nudging of his father. His comfort seemed to shake as he shakily moved away. He stood on his stilt-like legs for a moment before taking a steadying breath and putting one hoof in front of the other. His steps were wide and unsteady, seemed to feel around ahead of him before putting his miniscule weight fully on it. He would take a few steps then stop, looking up and around, before trying to head out again. After several awkward, loping, movements,he caught his hoof on a rock and tumbled to the ground.

Laikaylah trotted over to him, checking over him to make sure he was okay. All baby foals take a tumble or two, and Mikaeus seemed in one piece. But it was something else that was bothering her just a bit. She helped her colt back to his feet and looked over him worriedly. She blinked her silver eyes and looked deep into his, frowning.

Glacier trotted over with his mate, eager to ensure his son was allright. As Mikaeus stood back up, with only alittle assistance from Laikaylah, he gave an audible sigh of relief. He shook out his short mane and nudged his shouldn't again with his nose, encouraging him to try again. No need to give up so soon!
But he caught the look Laikaylah was giving his son, and that gave him pause. "What's wrong?" he asked softly, hoping his son wouldn't overhear.

He wasn't hurt, just a bit surprised. Of course, he was far too young to be embarrassed, but he was frustrated by the tumble. But any tears were quelled as his parents, both of them, trotted to his side. He was instantly comforted by their presence, giving a small whinny of appreciation. He felt his mother and father gently nuzzling him and licking him, and he began his efforts to stand back up. It took a bit of concentration, but he was soon back on his legs and wagging his short tuffy tail proudly.

Laikaylah gave a concerned look to Glacier, but stayed quiet for a few moments. She nudged little Mikaeus on his way and took a few steps back herself, indicating Glacier should follow her. They stood back a bit, far enough where Mikaeus couldn't hear but still within distance where the couple could keep an eye on all their children. "He's not clumsy..." she started with a somber expression. "I'm afraid it's not that, hmmm...simple."

The draft stallion followed his mate over a ways, just as relived as she was to see their son back on his feet. But even before Laikaylah said it, he was concerned by their purple son's seemingly lack of coordination. Certainly he was just a bit...slow. His other brother's seemed to be taking to their frolicking easily, but that didn't mean anything, right? He's get stronger in the coming weeks and he grew into them...
"..Simple?" he asked, cocking his head at his mate as she spoke. Laikaylah wasn't always the most simple or straightforward mare.

"I should have told you..." she started, before shaking her head a bit. "You see, in my family the silver-eyes are considered a sign of great beauty. But, it comes with a price sometimes," she said looking at Glacier - her intense, nearly pupil-less eyes burning into his.

The realization hit him hard, looking into her mysterious eyes. He couldn't deny that he hadn't wondered the same about her when they first met. They just seemed to blank and deep - like looking into a mirror. "Blind?" he choked out, his eyes suddenly glancing between Laikaylah and his son.

Indeed, looking at with that perspective did seem to click everything into place. Mikaeus was just as steady on his hooves as any foal his age. But as he walked, he wasn't unsteady, just uncertain. He would put one hoof out in front of him and slowly seem to pat around, until he was sure of his footing before putting his weight on it. In retrospect, his parents knew that the young colt never seemed to look them directly in the eyes, or focus in anything but some unknown, distant gaze.
While his brothers frolicked and tumbled about, Mikaeus's ears swiveled around and he began to slowly head towards them, using his hearing to determine where they were.

Laikaylah just nodded, following her mate's gaze to their son. "My mother was blind," she confessed. "She was so beautiful. And her mother as well... you see she was considered a profit. Her eyes, they were so mysterious. As if all the colors of the world floating against them. My family called it a window to her soul." She paused and looked back over to Glacier. "Please... I should have told you, but please don't be mad. In my family, it's viewed, well, as a blessing."

Glacier's face -usually never without a genial smile - was pulled into a taught line. He looked between his beautiful mate and their equally stunning son and felt a tugging of uncertainty in his heart. He couldn't be angry at Laikaylah. It was really her fault, right? It wasn't like she was blind herself... and even if she was - would he love her any less?
But he was worried for his son - even, well, pitied. Would he be safe? Would he be able to play with his brothers or other foals? His worried blue eyes traveled back to Laikaylah. "But you have the same silver eyes and you can see just fine... right?"
