User Image There was a slight pause to the raising of the hoof one one Dark Tempest, her gaze straight ahead of her as her nostrils busily flared and ears swiveled and perked. She had stopped short in front of her obstacle before taking large steps over the giant mound of waste. "Eww...Even I could smell that one coming." The mare giggled coming from the forests into a clearing that was close to her home. Father, with coaxing from Mother, allowed their blind daughter to walk the grounds by herself. Kainda expressed to her mate that if Tempest was babied, she would never be able to learn and grow by herself. Tide was simply scared for his little girl, his only girl, and was being much like a devoted, protective Father. Dark Tempest loved her parents - and even her dork brother Kai Darksun - but they were stifling. And besides even if she couldn't see them, half the time she would sense them close by which irritated her constantly. She didn't need a nanny. All she needed was freedom to do what she pleased and wanted.

The mare stopped short of the herd boundaries and gave a stretch of her frame. She lowered her muzzle to the ground taking in the scents of the earth. Dark Tempest wandered forward and sideways a little snaking her own trail until she smelled a patch of clovers. She loved their texture and taste, and what luck to find them so close! Immediately the mare took down a bite chewing contently all the while keeping herself alert and aware. The nostrils often time snorted and took in air for her to get the scent from whatever the winds chose to share with her. Her ears listened carefully for the sounds of steps, breathing of others - and her own - as well as the sound of life happening around her. For being blind, Dark Tempest could see fairly well. But there were times where she wished she could see...to know what her parents and brother looked like...what she looked like.

Sterling was standing in a clearing not far from the forest, his ears attuned to any sound that might alert him to any danger. He took a calming breath, not used to being out here all by himself like this. The handsome stallion was used to being around his chosen, Dea, and the rest of the group he considered his family. Of course, Dea had insisted he needed to try to do things on his own, since they wouldn't always be able to be there to help him. Sterling knew Dea was right, but it didn't make him any less nervous. Dea had promised that the family would be close by, so if he got into any trouble, they would be there as quickly as they could.

Sterling sniffed around and a sweet smell filled his nostrils, one he instantly recognized as a patch of clover. A rumble of his stomach reminded him he was hungry, so he thought he might as well have a sweet snack. He gently trotted over to where he could smell the clover, thinking how delicious it would taste to him. Unfortunately, he didn't pay attention to the sounds of breathing and ran into something soft, not knowing it was another Azrein.

Tempest had been lost in thought forgetting to hear her surroundings. Her mind was preoccupied with her musings when she felt something soft bump into her. The mare jumped not being able to contain her squeal taking a few steps away from the stallion. "Whoever you are, I have nothing to offer. And don't try to hurt me. My father and his brothers are just over there!" Okay so maybe that was a lie. But whoever bumped into her didn't have to know the specifics. Her chest heaved slightly from the scare, but as she calmed down she took in the smell of clovers and the scent of the one that bumped into her. It was strange to be so close to another without her brother telling her who it was and what it looked like. It felt strangely fun.

Sterling was startled when he heard a voice and he backed up a little. He couldn't tell what the Azrein in front of him felt like, but he could tell by the voice it was a female. He wished he had Dea or Serenity here to tell him what the other looked like. He took a calming breath, trying to think of how best to answer.

"I mean you no harm, whoever you are, I just came over here for a snack. I didn't hear anyone out here, but I might have been too preoccupied by my hunger. Please, I beg your forgiveness for not being careful where I was going and bumping into you,"Sterling apologized.

Tempest kept quiet listening to the voice as it spoke. From the tone and pitch, she felt safe to assume that it was a stallion which would mean the first male to ever speak to her besides her brother, father, and uncles. A deep flush formed on her cheeks causing her to move her head down and out of sight from the other male. She wasn't naive and she wasn't helpless. She could do this without any help no problem.

As he finished apologizing, the mare shook her head expecting him to be able to see. "N-No, it's quite all right. I guess I just got really scared...it's hard for me to tell who is friend and who isn't half the time unless someone is with me. Please, eat to your heart's content. I'm sure no one will mind." Dark Tempest slowed her speech wondering why she was telling a stranger all of this. It's not like she'd ever meet up with him again. For all she knew, he had probably moved on which would mean she was talking to the winds. A sigh escaped her maw as she let her head hang, her mane and bangs brushing against her face. At least that was one trait she got from her mother - long hair to hide her impurities. "That's just kinda great...he's probably gone..." The mare grunted loudly lowering her head to start grazing in her one spot only moving and craning her neck to feed on the rest of the clover.

Sterling heard the other explain that it was hard for her to tell who was friend or foe unless she had someone with her. His heart skipped a beat, wondering if she was in the same boat as he was, that she was blind. When he heard her speaking to herself, he let out a gentle laugh.

"I assure you, I have not gone anywhere, I am still right in front of you as you are muttering. You are not the only one who cannot tell anything about the world around you without someone to help you. I cannot either, I always have my chosen, Dea, or any of our family. Dea thought it would be best if I go solo for once, though she said she would be close by, if I needed her,"Sterling explained. He didn't know why he was telling about himself, but he just felt like doing so.

The mare felt herself jump at the sudden voice. He was still here? Her ears perked forward as she tried to calm her fast beating heart even stepping forward slowly as she craned her neck out to gather a scent. "You're...still here...?" Tempest's head tilted stopping a few paces in front of him, her nostrils flaring to gather his scent. "Really? You have that same problem too? Wow..." Her mind began to swirl with the possibility of finally finding someone like her. Well the odds weren't terrible, but she wasn't banking on finding anyone that was blind. It was so exciting that she felt her skin quiver, even letting out a small purr to signal her excitement. Oh what a day!

"You have a family? And a chosen? Oh wow! You're so lucky. I mean I have a family, but I don't have a chosen. Dad says I may or may not get one. But he has one. I'm so jealous!" Tempest couldn't help but fume as she wondered what it would be like to have a human. To have constant eyes. She snorted roughly shaking her head suddenly changing topic. "Mom says that I needed this practice. At first Dad wouldn't let her let me, but she has her ways." Tempest giggled. "Mom just wants me to be able to get around without her. And I don't blame her. She's just wanting me to get stronger." The mare stretched her neck a little lowering her head to sniff at the clovers. "They taste good, don't they? The clovers?" Her ears tilted forward to catch his voice as she munched on some. "You're blind like me aren't you?" Tempest wasn't sure where that came from, but she had to know for sure. She just had to...

Sterling listened to the voice of the other, thinking what a beautiful voice she had. He could tell in her voice how much she wanted to have a chosen like he did. As her last words filled his ears, he was surprised she had figured out he was blind. Then he reminded himself, he had figured it out about her, at least was pretty sure he had figured that out.

"Yes, I am blind as well, I have been blind since I was born. As for my chosen, she is a sweet thing and has a tendency to help others a lot. She is happily married and her husband seems to like others too. So, what is it like being out on your own for the first time?"Sterling asked. He wished he knew what the mare looked like, but knew that without someone to tell him, he would just have to paint a picture in his mind himself.

Tempest swelled with excitement! The stallion was blind! Of course that was a horrid thing to bestow on anyone, but he was...he was just like her! A kindred spirit to swap stories and experiences with. Someone that would actually understand her frustrations and feelings. Oh it felt wonderful! Even though she was quivering, she was trying to keep as calm as possible. Hopefully her scent wasn't becoming too strong to signal him of her excitement.

"Really? I have too! Mom said when I was born, my eyes used to glow. They don't anymore, but she said that they are still a pretty green. Like clovers." The mare giggled a little. Oh how she desperately wished to know what he looked like. Was he strong? Was he tall? Was he small and fat? What kind of markings did he have? His question caught her back to the conversation at hand. "Oh wow. So you guys have like this little big family then? I wonder what it's like to be in a family of humans. Is it different than being around other azrein?" Tempest stopped to think before she replied to the next question. "It's...different. I'm so used to my brother being around. We're close but more in a brother-sister rivalry type close. We're always there for each other ,but we pick on each other constantly. Still, I'd rather have no other brother but mine." Her ears flicked a little as she paused to take a breath. "But it's always scary being out here by myself...I'm not quite used to it. I want to be able to see and be told what's around me...but I suppose I have to make due with what I got. How was it when you were on your own for the first time?" Tempest flicked her ears in question as she slowly started to come forward. She wasn't exactly sure where she was going but she followed his scent...

Right up until she felt her chest against his side. She felt heat spread across her cheeks as she stayed completely still. Oh I'm sorry!" Tempest felt her ears go against the back of her head as she looked down in embarrassment. "I should have told you I was walking...I'm just so used to being seen by others.." She laughed the last part out keeping close to him. She felt like she was on his mid section closer to his rump. Her nostrils flared taking in his scent and the feel of his coat. She wondered how his mane and tail felt as well as the other parts of him. Again her cheeks began to flush with the thought. She'd never touched another male before that wasn't related to her in some way...

Sterling could hear the excitement in her voice as she started to speak and he couldn't blame her. He had known there were probably other blind Azrein around, but he had never met any. It was wonderful to think that there was someone like him, someone who had to rely on their other senses to get around and learn about the world around them. Someone else who relied on others to explain colors and other things to him and it made him excited to know he would have someone to talk to who understood. Plus, it didn't hurt that it was a female, one he imagined must be pretty beautiful, if her melodic voice was any indication.

"Well, my chosen said I have blue eyes, when she can get my bangs out of the way. She says my hair is the color of clovers with a mixture of yellow the color of what she says is the hay she sometimes gives me. She said my mane and tail have stars all over them, which glows sometimes. As for growing up with humans and other Azrein is pretty much the same as your family. We tease one another, but we always have one another's backs. And to tell you the truth, this is my first time by myself as well. I must admit, it scares me, but I know Dea is right, I can't always rely on her and the rest of my family to always walk with me. I mean, I know they will most of the time, but even they need a break sometimes,"Sterling admitted with a laugh.

Then he felt something soft bump into his back side and he let out a whinny of surprise. When he heard her voice next to him, he knew it had been she who had run into him and this made him laugh a little.

"It's okay, I think that happens to all of us at some point,"he admitted gently.

Tempest still felt embarrassed for bumping into Sterling. She should have known better but her brash nature got the best of her. She flicked her tail as she took a breath. "Excuse me for this next part..." Tempest breathed as she settled her nose on his side. At first she started going one way but when stomach turned into back leg muscles she brushed her velvet nose the other way back over his stomach until she got to his front leg. From the front leg she gestured up until now they both stood side to side her head turned as if to look at his face. "All right so we're both out of the danger zone then!" Tempest gave a laugh as if to try and make light of their current situation.

"Earlier, what you said. You have the colors of green and yellow. Those must be pretty. Mom and Dad try to describe them to me when they can.." Her nose wrinkled in thought before she continued. "I never grew up around humans before. I guess they're kind of alike to us. Mom doesn't like them very much but Dad seems to not mind them. And I know what you mean. Sometimes I feel like I'm a burden to my parents and my brother that someone has to keep constant tabs on me. At first I was hurt when Mom said I needed to go on my own, but I realize that she just wants me to be able to survive. Mom's a little harsh, but she means well." She sneezed a laugh shaking her head at the memory of her mother teaching her how to fight. Kainda was no push over of a parent, but she wasn't a ruthless dictator. Tempest could tell that her mother loved her with everything that the warrior mare was.

"What's it like for you? Being on your own for the first time?" Tempest suddenly asked leaning her neck against Sterling's so that she could get a better feel of him. The fact that they were touching was strange enough as it was. She could feel his side heave against hers when they both breathed, and feel his skin quivering whenever theirs touched. Her own body was mirroring his actions however, her tail even flicking to feel it brush against his. As many other times as she touched others, none of them were not family. In this sense, Sterling was her first.

Sterling wondered what she meant when she said excuse me for something, until he felt her nose brushing against his side. He felt her go to his back legs, then make her way along his stomach to where his head was. He laughed along with her when she talked about the danger zone, then listened to her speak.

"Yes, I can only imagine the colors of yellow and green are quite beautiful. The others try to describe them to me, but without anything to really base them on, I am afraid I can only picture in my mind what they might look like. As for humans, I can only assume your mother has come across some very bad humans. Dea and her husband are wonderful people, they would never want to hurt anyone. I know Dea does a lot of work for the king, making sure the people and Azrein of the kingdom are well cared for. As for being out on my own, it is a mixture of fear and excitement. It is scary to be out here without my family, but exciting that I get to experience the world myself,"Sterling explained. He could feel her heart beating beside him and her breathing as well. It seemed to bring a calm to him as he felt them breathing in sync.

"From what my parents have said, I am black with white stripes and white markings on my belly, mouth, and ankles... I have a necklace from Dad's side of the family made from his own. He said that it was an heirloom from his side of the family." Tempest scrunched her nose as she tried her best to describe herself. "Oh and long hair! Really really long black hair!" The mare couldn't help but giggle a little flicking said tail. "I must sound boring." She suddenly hushed herself looking down a little, her nostrils flaring reminder her that she was still standing beside Sterling, their bodies in a rhythmic sync. "Mom doesn't really have a preference for humans...she'd rather avoid them all together. Even the King." Tempest gave a bit of a snort. "I'd love to meet a human one day. I'm sure it would be fantastic to...oh I was about to say see. Silly me." She laughed at her mistake shaking her head, but not wanting to complete her thought. What was the point? Tempest was baffled at herself sometimes at the fact that she wanted to experience all these things that she never fully could because of her lack of sight.

"I was scared too. And a little nervous. I haven't been this far from the herd before, and it's...well it's fun too!" She admitted turning in his direction then centering her head back down toward the ground, nostrils flaring to catch the different scents of the area. "I wonder what time it is...We'll probably have to be going home soon, huh?" Tempest said quite absent in thought. "Are you far from here or do you think you're close by?" Her hoof pawed at the ground a little digging up the scent of the earth to make it stronger, the clover smell penetrating her nostrils making her even more comfortable. She really liked clovers...

Sterling listened to what she said and had to admit, he liked the sound of her. When she said she must be boring, he shook his head and gave a whinny of disagreement. He didn't think she sounded boring at all, he actually wanted to get to know her better. At the mention of the time, he perked his ears and tried to see what he could hear. He also lifted his head to the sky, trying to figure out where the sun was.

"You are not boring, so do not even think such a thing like that. As for humans, maybe one day you will actually get to meet some of them. You may not be able to see them, but you can hear them and get to know them, like I do. As for the time of day, I would say it is about 3 or 4 in the afternoon. My family should be in their cabin they have out here, which is only a short walk from here. They will probably want to head back to the castle tomorrow, since Dea worries the king may need her for something,"Sterling replied.

His disapproved whinny made her start a bit. Did she say something that he didn't like? She immediately felt the flush of embarrassment rush to her cheek. Did he meant that she wasn't boring? Tempest decided not to investigate the answer further a little afraid of what the reply would be in case she was wrong. However, he answered her own question soon enough which made her release an unknowingly held breath in relief. "Oh I...I guess I won't anymore. If you really want me to..."

"It's not that late then. Now that I feel it, the sun isn't as hot, but I can still feel the rays." Her pelt quivered a little in response to the feel of the sun, her tail flicking behind her. "Well..maybe one day I'll meet a human for the first time. Oh the castle? Is it far from where your cabin is? Does Dea know the king personally?" Tempest's head tilted a little in question more out of habit than anything else. The stallion couldn't see her, she knew that, and yet she couldn't help her mannerisms. Old habits and what not. She lightly pawed at the ground giving a grunt. "Daddy's chosen has met the king. He said that his chosen is Duke Edward Drake, but I've yet to meet him. Mom's not too thrilled about the idea yet." Tempest laughed thinking about her mother's comical outburst at her mate's idea to bring the Duke home. Kainda was still unsure of humans, and was afraid to let them around her offspring. But Tempest sill wanted to know. There was so much she still wanted to learn!
