Training, training, training. That seemed to be all Lenka did now. She was just a kid, meeting with Shalott and having the lady be so mean really…did something. Lenka just wanted to train more, and grow stronger, much stronger than that lady. She had to prove that children could fight in the war, and that they could and would do the very best that they could.

Tonight was no different, though her arms and legs were numb with cold, she still struggled through the snow, doing the jungle gym over and over and over again

It was nearing midnight, and Lenka shivered violently, struggling up the steps once more, rubbing her arms before going to tackle the monkey bars again. This was going to be it. Even with all her movement, she was so, so cold…

Maybe she’d skip tomorrow’s patrol and just…stay warm in her bed…Yeah. That was a good plan, a really good one. And a warm one. A smile graced her face as she jumped onto the monkey bars, running across their icy surface once, before turning and dropping down, swinging herself from one cold piece of metal to the other.

Remarque had assumed this was going to be most bland evening of energy collection. He’d been traversing the park with little interaction with anyone; he’d found someone, drained a bit of energy, and then went along his merry way. Noises from the park attracted him; he assumed it was some child and had full intentions of chasing them home.

No one should be out at this our—especially not a child.

He moved past a tree and then froze, eyes locking on the culprit.

Lenka.

Go ******** figure. What the hell was she doing out? It didn’t look like she was ruining anyone’s life. Yet.

A smirk grew onto his face. He hadn’t forgiven her for the incident where she’d pushed him over in the sandbox, and now seemed like the perfect excuse to pay her back. As he walked nearer, keeping quiet as he approached, he scooped a ball of snow into his hands, pressed it tightly, aimed—and then hurled it, right at the back of the girl’s head.

Sadly, Remarque had very good aim. With a cry, the snowball collided with Lenka’s head and the surprise and sudden cold made her lose her grip on the monkey bars, falling down into the snow with a yelp.

She had been cold before, now she was absolutely freezing beyond belief. After a moment, the child stood up, shivering and looking around to see who threw the snowball, and when her eyes landed on Remarque, she paled. Had she not been so cold, perhaps she would have felt the Dark Mirror Senshi…he looked different, and now that she knew he was there, she could feel him…and he felt a lot stronger.

Trembling with cold, Lenka narrowed her eyes. “You big mean stupid bully! What was that for?” He was just so…awful! Why…how could anyone ever like this guy? Ever? He was the worst person in the whole entire world.

Remarque—no surprise—laughed. “Oh, look at you. You’re just adorable. Not a very good senshi if you can’t even mind your surroundings. What if I’d thrown a stick, instead?” he asked, approaching the girl with an amused expression.

He had been aiming for her but hadn’t been entirely sure it had hit; at the very least he’d expected to give her a surprise. He had not anticipated her falling from the monkeybars, but that only enhanced his mirth.

He wasn’t afraid of Lenka—he hadn’t been before, when she had upgraded to super in front of him, and he sure as hell wasn’t now. Looking down at her gave him a little rush of power. “Or a rock? I'd have knocked that hollow head right off your shoulders.”

Lenka’s lip trembled though she stood her ground, summoning her watermelon rind to her hand. “Yes, well, my head doesn’t come off that easily!” At least, she very much hoped that it didn’t…Her mom would be really sad to have a headless daughter…oh goodness. That would be just awful!

“Yeah. It doesn’t come off easy at all! But, but.” She drew her arm back, then hesitated, dispelling the rind, and scooping up a snowball, throwing it as hard as she could at Remarque, just wanting to hit him and make him super cold too.

“Don’t you even know the rules of a good snowball fight? You’re not allowed to just…hit people with snowballs! You have no manners!” This guy was the lowest of the low. Lenka figured he had no friends outside of being a bad guy, and she figured he really deserved that. But…Maybe he just needed a friend? Maybe…he was just a really lonely bad guy, who needed…someone to play with while on patrol. Maybe he was just shy, and really did want to be her friend?

Or maybe all the cold was starting to freeze her brain.

The snowball collided with Remarque’s chest; he hadn’t bothered trying to dodge it. Lenka had good aim, but that didn’t mean he was afraid of a little frozen water. He moved to brush the clinging snowflakes from him. “There aren’t any rules to a good snowball fight. You can’t have a surprise attack if your enemy knows you’re attacking them, duh. What are they teaching you kids in school these days?”

…Probably things like math and reading, but still. There were some things you were just supposed to know.

He shrugged, hand dropping to his side when he’d wiped off the snowball. “Anyway, speaking of manners, you’re certainly one to talk. I’ve got a bone to pick with you about that. Running around like a little hooligan, attacking strangers, picking fights. That was very rude of you to push me over into the sandbox, Lenka. So I’ve come to teach you a lesson.”

Remarque knelt a bit and scooped up another handful of snow, packing it into a tight ball as he stood up, smirking at the girl.

“Rude for me to push you over? You’ve pushed me over a million times, Remarque! And I only fight with you because you’re the bad guy…and nothing you’ve ever done has made me think you were ever the good guy! You’re just…a monster, you’re no better than the youmas you know! You’re a big bully, and a jerk!”

And by now, Lenka was very, very cold, shivering, trying to stop her teeth from chattering as she spoke to him.

She didn’t want to be in a snowball fight, not when she was half frozen…it wasn’t fair! With a sigh, she summoned her watermelon rind. Maybe if she…could just bind him, and run…run like crazy, then he wouldn’t be able to get her, and she could get warmed up! Yeah. That was a good plan.

She liked the fact that she could bind someone now…it really made life easier.

“I wouldn’t have to push you over if you weren’t always getting in my way, you know,” Remarque chastised, “And you and I maybe could have even been friends if you hadn’t been so obnoxious. I ran into another chibi senshi, you know,” he said; he assumed Hypnos had been a chibi despite her not mentioning such and—well, even if she wasn’t, he could have just lied about it. “She was very nice and polite. Unlike you. And do you know? She didn’t call me a monster or a bully or a jerk.”

His eyes had drifted down to the snowball to make sure it was nice and round, though he frowned when he noticed the watermelon rind in her hand. “You know,” he quipped quickly, “If you throw that like you did last time, unless you get a really good shot, I am going to chase you down and kick you, and then I am going to bury you in snow and leave you there.”

It wasn’t a particularly violent threat, but it was a threat all the same. “Which isn’t really how I wanted this evening to end. I just wanted to tell you that maybe you should chill out and not attack everyone you see without stopping to think if it was a good idea or not. Oh. And to throw some snow at you,” he said, chucking his second snowball towards the girl’s stomach.

Lenka shook her head. “If she didn’t call you a bully or a jerk, then she really must not have known anything!” She called, trying to move out of the way of the snowball by ducking, only to have it hit her right in the face.

She let out a cry as the cold, icy ball hit her, then wiped it off, lip trembling. “I hate you! I don’t ever want to be your friend, I just…” She gripped her watermelon rind very tightly. “I don’t like you at all. Not one little bit. Lenka binding boomarind!” She threw her rind at him, wanting it to hit, needing it to hit and bind him. She just wanted to go home now. She didn’t want to deal with him. How could he not think he was a bully when she had just been minding her own business, and he threw a snowball at her? Wasn’t that just a mean thing to do? And now he hit her in the face with a snowball!

One of these days, she was going to get her team and they were going to make him pay for being such a mean person. One of these days.

The watermelon rind wrapped around Remarque’s arms and torso and he scoffed, seeming flabbergasted that the girl had the nerve to bind him even after her threat. He was a bit surprised that the snowball had hit her in the face, though was quick to blame her and not just a bad throw. “Hate is a strong word, you know,” he chastised, trying to kick some snow at her in retaliation for her using her attack on him. “That wouldn’t have hit you in the face if you hadn’t moved. Jeez, Lenka. I was just playing. You don’t have to be such a sore loser. It’s not my fault you suck at snowball fights.”

He really needed to find some way to get Lenka to be so afraid of him that she just ran away; there was a part of him that didn’t want to hurt her, given the fact that he sympathized with the girl’s parents and didn’t want to imagine them having to deal with a poor, hurt child—but then there was the larger, less empathetic side, that just wanted to scare the girl enough to get her to stay out of his hair.

Lenka remained where she was for only a moment, a long enough moment so she could stick her tongue out at Remarque, before making a run for it, heading home to get a hot bath and defrost some of her limbs. Well, at least he hadn’t…really pushed her over…her falling in the snow had been…her falling. Not him pushing her down.

So today had been…a sort of success. Sort of.

Still. She never really wanted to see Remarque ever again

Remarque watched after the child, scoffing at her juvenile actions. Not that throwing a snowball at her was any better, but he was just sort of ignoring that fact for now. Remarque wondered if he should have chucked a rock or stick at her for good measure, though the fact that she had scampered off was fair enough. It didn't look like she was really working to fight off any youma or agents of chaos this evening, but at least now he didn't have to worry about her getting in his way while he tried to snag some energy.

He wriggled for a few seconds until the rind around him snapped off and wrinkled his nose at the heavy aroma of watermelon. He brushed himself off, looked after Lenka, and decided she wasn't worth harassing any more this evening. Pleased with himself, he brushed his chilled hands off on his pants and turned, heading in the opposite direction of the child.
