For some, particularly the single, or those in budding romances, Valentine's Day could be a stressful, or lonely event. Not for Kess. She had s**t to do. Of course, she also lacked the desire to do any of the drawn-out planning that most people committed to. Her version of arranging a date for 'V-Day' went as follows:
-PICK YOU UP IN 20 Y/N-
It was an address she recognized, so she tugged on her helmet and revved the Judge's engine, pulling away from the curb. It was uptown, the kind of apartments too expensive to really justify. The blonde dropped her kickstand and cut the motor, swinging a leg over the bike and grabbing a wrapped bouquet from the back of the bike. She reached out to rapp on the door with gloved knuckles, before pulling the helmet off her blonde head and flashing her wide, lopsided grin as it opened.
"Hey, Valentine." The flowers were held out in offering.

Daphne's relief when her phone had exploded with the merry jingle signifying Kess wanted to make her thoughts known, was all-consuming. Her friends, what few of them she had these days, had gone out of their way to make her feel like she didn't have to be lonely on this most romantic of days. The bluenette had wisely kept to herself that she had a slight entanglement for most of the afternoon until it came time a cringe-inducing ritual. Singles' Awareness was not at all something that she wanted. Yes, she was technically single. Was she aware of it?
Every ******** day of her miserable life.
For her there was nothing to celebrate other than the destruction of something she'd once striven for with all her pathetic energy. That was not worth celebrating and so she had done the single most ridiculous thing she could think of when cornered. "I have a date!" It had blurted out almost in concert with her phone. "Ahaha, there they are now!" Fingers had furiously typed out the responding text, face red.
-Save me. Plz omg be my Lance.-
So the apartment had cleared as they prepared for their night of girly companionship, chatter, movies that celebrated that they were emotionally strong and needed no crutch. Personally, she was looking forward to spending time with one of her many emotional crutches. Especially when they showed up with an assortment of tightly-budded roses and a charmingly cocky grin.
The grin always sold her. Reaching out and snagging her by one sassy suspender Daphne pulled Kess into a laughingly grateful hug. "My hero, knight in leathery armor, with sexy steed. I owe you." The relief was palpable.

The tug made her laugh, shooting a jolt through her lanky frame that made her vaguely consider something more friendly than a hug. Her cheerful face was hidden briefly in blue hair, as she gave her a good, hard squeeze. "You smell good," Kess informed her, as they separated. "I've got a thing I need to be at tonight, but I want you to come with me."
She could've gone alone, and had plenty of fun, but Daphne was a great time, and, well, who better to take as a 'date'? In fact, the bluenette might even meet a real special somebody at the party, or, special somebodies.
Her grin was stupidly pleased with herself, as she caught hold of Daphne's hand and tugged her out of the doorway and onto the stoop. Dark eyes moved over her shoulder to find purple and her brows raised slightly. "Hey, Jada. Happy Valentine's Day, yeah?"
She was backpedaling down the stairs already, flashing the brunette at the door a two-fingered salute in farewell as she pulled Daphne along.

That was generally how this whole relationship worked for the pair of them. There were those rare, incredibly rare, times when Daphne was the one leading the way and dragging Kess. Most times though it was Kess taking her by the hand and leading the bluenette into yet another more than fun, slightly insane, adventure. Her favorites though were times hanging out at her house, or even what Kess swore up and down was a suitable apartment, trying to beat each other at video games. Watching movies. Talking about...everything.
Friendship had snuck up on her when she hadn't really been paying much attention. Yes they had this weirdly powerful attraction that tended to dissolve into things like laughing over bad movies turning into making out over bad movies, but it didn't ruin the fact that an even worse scene would come on and they'd be laughing like nothing had happened.
It wasn't complicated like so many things were in Daphne's life. For that she was endlessly grateful.
The flowers had been deposited for safekeeping to be retrieved later. Or tomorrow. It was getting late enough that odds were if they were 'going out to do something' they'd end up collapsed in a pile of tossed blankets and pillow fights with exhaustion somewhere in the middle of tomorrow morning. Plus she didn't want them to die, which was practical.
"You look good. Am I underdressed?" Traipsing out front wasn't a problem at all even though the cool February wind made her bare legs want to curl up and die somewhere. Skirt. Winter. Derp. "We should stop by my place after, I have something for you."

"No, you're perfect," The blonde's intense dark eyes ran over Daphne as she tossed the blunette a helmet, before straddling the bike. "You're gonna be awful cold on the ride there, though." She grinned. "I'll warm you up. Promise." She pulled on her own helmet, hiding the dorky, crooked smile on her face in favor of starting the bike.
They were getting to the point where they actually knew where s**t was in each other's pads. That was a level of friendship Kess didn't have with many people. Her line of work [both civilian and powered], and her lack of desire for close ties prevented her from having the kind of friends whom were free to come and go at her house. She rarely brought hook-ups there. Daphne, of course, had long since stopped being a hook-up. She cared about Daphne.
"Here we go," Kess mumbled, revving the engine in a familiar, playful way, to let Daphne know they were about to take off, and fast.
