Tiresome, but necessary.
That was how Cais deemed his nightly roundabout of the city. Though never asked and not sure if was truly the right action to take, he had taken to keeping this vigil each and every night in the hopes of dealing any damage to any Legionnaire he may come across. In recent days it had exceedingly difficult given the new social structure of the city, leaving it open for the new guard to take up posts in areas which had previously been left unguarded. Leaving before nightfall was the best way to avoid detection until outside their normal post areas, back to where the young fighter could search and plot to his heart's content.
Despite the majority of nights when he had little to show for his efforts, he was feeling lucky about this particular evening. It was a clear night with a waning moon, enough moonlight to see but not enough to see him from far off. It was pleasantly warm enough, though he'd always wish it were warmer from time to time, but those sentiments were soon lost as soon as he was on the move, weapons tied at his side.
The melancholy overtone of the city hadn't quite caught up with him in the wake of the Emperor's death. All he could feel was the sting of destruction that had ravaged the town, the Lunarians there mattered far more than one, Emperor or not. Moving down one of his well traveled streets he let out a grunt as he thought it over. What was the point in dwelling on it? His self-induced work felt more important to him than any old man sitting on a throne.
Tonight was going to be proof of that, he had decided earlier that day. He'd learned a few things about Legion activity in the past few days and decided to keep his focus on his hatred, leading him back into the fray with who had deemed the enemy, his enemy. With that impulse leading him he wandered under the falling sun, passing few Lunarians as many began to make their way back home. Tonight it would change, tonight it would all be different.
But with him things always had a habit of not working out just right.

Like the Nobleman, the Legionnaire and her team had a self-imposed duty of monitoring the night. It wasn't righteous and it wasn't even required, but Li had trained herself and kept herself short with her rigorous outlook; since her 'accident' and subsequent promotion, a few of her fellow Fighters had taken a shine to her ways and had opted to make a team for the nightly rounds for safety in numbers. The streets were still shaken and rehabilitating from the slew of bad news, but Li - now a Fighter - had put the grief behind her. It wasn't because she was stronger or because she had any greater hatred to nurse, as that was where she and the erstwhile Noble parted ways: Li now had an obligation to keep more of her kin safe. Whereas the Legion and Noble were drawing lines in the sand writ with blood, testing the waters of the Neutral faction, Li now had a whole new troupe to look after and a great sense of urgency to protect her people from themselves. The further they degenerated into hate and civil unrest, the more the body count would climb. She had to find a way to maneuver key pieces and hope she could reach them...
But it was not time for such heavy thoughts. Casting a smile to her fellow Legionnaire's, Li was feeling good for the coming night. It was unusual for her to be surrounded by her peers, much of a lone wolf as she was, but there was something comforting in it after spending the majority of her time as a student on her own or with Huang. It was perhaps for that same reason that she didn't really feel very tightly bound to the other Fighter's; indeed, their bravado and flippancy in some ways made her feel like she'd be busier this eve than if she had patrolled on her own. She did her best to usher those that were going home to do so in a swifter pace, for as the night encroached with darker tidings, she did not want innocents to be mingled in the confusing knot that was the bid for dominance in Lunaria. It was bad enough so many of her friends were caught and bound by the snaring web of political movements.
As the moon started to rival the falling sun for the brightest mantle in the sky, the group came to a pause by one of the crossroads between the dock and the quieter streets, each lounging in their silent manner as they set up the small torches for visibility. It was one of the darkest stretches and one she didn't care to come by herself, but had no qualms with the right company. Li watched the gathered begin their soft bickering and banter, lazing about the stone wall that separated the path from the distant gem of the ocean, the city sprawling out clearly with small dots of light like stars in the blanket of the night. Try as they might, her group could not get her to be involved in their machismo, as indeed, Li was content to stand beneath one of the torches and lean against the thick pole, arms crossed as her eyes roved the area with a familiarity and experience that prompted most of her Legionnaire brethren to let her be.
"It's going to be one of those nights," she said to no one in particular, not knowing even the half of what was coming.

Somehow the shorter Lunarian had managed to take a higher vantage point along a roof and crept silently over it, keeping his eyes moving constantly. The fighter was making good time and he slid down from the building, moving onward to where it was less and less crowded. With a smirk he'd taken into a run - he knew where his target lay, and he was going to make sure he made an impression.
He'd heard tale of a group that would be gathered. Something even I can handle. Cais had made mistakes before, he'd been beaten, nearly killed and brought down a few pegs here and there. Not tonight, stop dwelling. He bit his lip as he slid to a stop, peering around a corner of a crumbling wall. Catching his breath, he stopped to listen as he could hear the mumbled voices moving over the area. Poking his head over the wall he could clearly see where they had placed torches to light the way.
"Idiots." He muttered under his breath with a shake of his head. If I could sideline this group.... There was a grin before he huddled down, sneaking a bit closer. The greens of his outfit and hair often worked to his advantage when it came to disguising into bushes and the like, and he stared at the group, counting them quickly. This was the group he'd heard about he was certain, to their purpose he was unsure - but any trouble he could make for the Legion was well enough for him.
He'd start it slowly, he thought, grabbing a thick rock from beneath the bushy disguise, throwing it near the largest members head and allowing it to pass him, hitting the rock wall behind the big lug. Maybe it was just fun, but he knew them well enough that it would cause some sort of stir in their ranks.
Regardless of how harmless it seemed, his weapons were still poised. "C'mon." He said in a hushed voice, watching carefully.

The rock whizzed by the largest of the group, causing him to do a double-take. His head snapped in the direction of the sound but - very aware he'd felt it fly by his earfin - he turned again to look towards the bushes. "Hey," his throaty call wasn't angry as much as it was perplexed. "Kids shouldn't be out 'bout this time."
A wiry male leaped up on the wall in the back, peering almost directly to where Cais was hidden. "Kids don't throw that far," his quiet, thoughtful voice didn't carry far.
"Oi?" The second largest popped into view, followed by two others. "We gotta scrapper do we?" Clearly a bit more eager for action than the others, he unsheathed the daggers on his thighs, swirling them over his index fingers. "Think I can throw back, 'ey?" The sharp blade was quickly held between forefinger and thumb, the hilt resting on his shoulder; a quick movement would have the blade in motion if he so pleased, the only thing that kept him in place being the uncertainty of who had thrown a rock at a group of Legionnaires. A big group at that.
From her vantage point further down the wall, Li frowned. "Are you Fighters or frightened? Check it out. Make sure it's not a child, a dog or a Noble ambush." Her tone indicated she didn't believe it was any of the listed, but it was better to know than to stand around and guffaw over what it was or wasn't. This was not time to play, insofar as she was concerned.
The males exchanged glances before doing just that -- advancing on the bushes, all five, with the others still watching.

An air of anticipation picked up around Cais as they seemed to stir. Then a curious thing began to happen as more than anticipated stepped out of the shadows. Cais blinked and began to recount the numbers as the anticipation seemed to falter and turn to nervousness. Well this is a tricky thing... He thought to himself as he flattened under the bush, thinking over his options.
The idea behind his actions didn't have to include fighting - he'd only meant to sideline them, and though he thought he could take them all it wasn't entirely the point. Cais had to get them to move, or at least get some of them to move. Cais stared as he heard them approaching quickly. It's only 5, would 5 be enough? He thought as he heard a small twig break nearby.
It'll have to do. All of his heroic ideas were thrown out immediately and he closed his eyes, shifting his body slightly so he was on his haunches. It was a barely audible whisper. "One... Two..." A shadow fell on the bushes. "Go."
It was quick, a sprint as his skin scratched against the bushes and he was off, quickly. Either to get away or make a chase - either result would suit him fine. He only hoped the mere shock of the bush bursting open would distract them for the few precious seconds he needed to gain momentum. He wasn't even sure where he was going, just that in the ever creeping darkness he was moving further away from the city.
He didn't even bother to turn and look yet.
