Introduction:
If you have a character that's a new student or new faculty member in the school, it can be really hard to start interacting with people right away. All the characters have already molded into their own group of friends, and they all want to do their own thing. Sometimes, the social butterfly of the classroom will take notice of your character, but if that character is busy, it might not happen. So how do you make your character fit in?

The First Thing To Do:
Take a peek at who is active and which characters are being used. You need to do some investigation. Do not approach people just because of how they look because you might be in for a surprise and it'll get awkward. So what you should do instead is take a look at which characters are RPing at the moment and take a moment to look at their RPers and then go to the Accepted Character Profile subforum and do your research! You need to figure out what species their character is and if your character will be compatible with theirs! If not, it's going to be one awkward moment when you jump in.

Some people are cranky pots and if you approach them because of how they appear, they might just make your character cry or upset. You need to know what makes them mad or what they don't like. That way, if you're prepared to make them mad, go for it. If you're not prepared, then avoid it so you're not stuck dealing with an angry character that you didn't prepare yourself to deal with. You don't want to make your character look silly due to a lack of investigation!

So take the time and look around and find people who your character will make friends with. It's terrible to just jump in because it's a spot where a lot of people are or because a certain person looks cute.

For those with friendly characters:
Well, if you have a character that doesn't mind talking and introducing him or herself to other people, then you've got the easy road to making a lot of friends for your character. Just find a group of characters that your character would want to be friends with and just introduce your character! Highly likely the other party will be accepting and will let her join the group right away since Rosentale is full of very friendly people. It's that simple!

For those with shy characters:
It might be a little harder for your shy character to jump into the RP, but usually if your character is showing signs of nervousness and fear, someone might take notice and then try to drag your character into their group of friends so your character won't be scared anymore. But if that doesn't work, you could have your character man up and try to squeak a little tiny "hello" to someone.

Shyness is a flaw if you play your character right. If your character loses their shyness quickly, it's not really a flaw but rather a one time trait and that's no fun. The goal is to have your character gradually open up to the other characters while trying to make reactions that are easy for others to respond to. It's nice to create a barrier that other characters have to slowly break down, but if you make to strong a barrier around your character, the other RPers will have a hard time with your character. Small reactions are a good way to start out. Your character can nod and agree with the other people and input some of their ideas.

It can be a rough start at first for shy characters, but the other characters are very accepting and friendly and eventually your shy character will see that person as a friend. But remember, shy characters may see one person as a friend, but will still be shy around other strangers! Shyness is not something that is cured by becoming friends with people!

For those with antisocial characters:
Having an antisocial character can be difficult, but if you do it right, it's pretty fun! This section is very long since antisocial characters have the most difficult time interacting with other characters. Antisocial characters apply to characters that usually have a dark past or just doesn't like people. If your character prefers to be alone or doesn't bother to chat with other people, there might be a chance that your character might not get noticed at all and it's difficult to interact with other people since quiet people do not give a lot to respond to. If you stick your character in the corner of a room while a group of friends are chatting away, it might be likely that they are occupied with what the are doing so you can't expect them to drop what they are doing to notice your poor person in the corner.

It is especially difficult if you put an antisocial character in a scene where a lot of things are going on. The RPers have a lot to read and if they can't keep up with the pace or are pressed to make a post soon, sometimes they skim over the background text and look only for the things that people say and the actions that people do. If your character just stands and watches while thinking thoughts about their dark past, it's going to be hard for anyone to incorporate your character into what they're going to post next because there's a lot of stuff happening at once, right? Often times, they can only do a measly "Oh, look a person" sentence about your character. Internal thoughts are usually nice as a background to what your character is like and helps remind the reader what your character's past is, but no character will ever respond to internal thoughts since none of them are mind readers.

Usually, it's awkward if you play a person out of character, but you need to do your best to tweak your character for the sake of the RP. I'm not saying you have to do some major tweaks, but just some minor tweaks that will help your character fit in more.

A good way is to make them a little more talkative. If your character sees someone do something, usually a comment to the person about the action can help get their attention or give them a way to pull your character into the group. Just because your character doesn't like people, that doesn't mean her or she doesn't have a voice. If your character thinks something about someone, what's so wrong about saying it? Most antisocial characters don't care about making friends so there's no need to be polite. If your antisocial character cares about making friends, you might want to refer to the shy section then.

Another way to have your antisocial character interact better with people is to expand on their flaws. People are not perfect and antisocial people can't always look cool all the time. If they look cool all the time, then that sure is boring and RPers rarely stop to think about how cool a character is. It's the hard truth, so this is why flaws are very important because RPers love to stop and interact with someone with a lot of flaws. You can use their flaws to have them lose their cool in some way.

Overall, having an antisocial character is difficult, and it might be a bit lonely sometimes, but if you can do it right, it's actually really fun! And remember, once your character gets someone's attention, don't start getting too quiet or their attention might veer off! Other characters can only respond to what is said and done, not what is thought!

What Not To Do:
So obviously the goal is to capture people's attention when first starting out, but there are a few ways to go about it that will just make everything awkward and no one will respond to it because they don't know how. It's fine if you you do something subtle like dropping a pencil or tripping on a bag. That's completely fine. The main point is try not to do something so disruptive that will cause people to stop what they're doing to look at your character. That's annoying for RPers. It's easier if your character just slips into a group if that's what you want.

Here are some examples of what you shouldn't do:

Use Character Abilities for Attention:
Using your character's abilities to wow people is just a big no. Big blasts of fire or flooding the room or making things float... Please don't. The school is full of all kinds of people with different powers. It looks silly if your character is in a corner by him or herself playing with their magic or abilities. No one will care to notice it since they don't know how to respond.

"Wow, look at that person create that ball of light while floating in the air! That's amazing!"

That won't happen. I'm sorry. People are doing their own thing and if they have to turn away from their friends to look at you, it's just too much work and they'll choose to ignore it. Just talk to them, but don't go showing off your character's powers. The other characters have powers too. They're not impressed.

Get your character sick:
It's fine if you already have a set of friends and your character has been healthy for some time and you think that a change of pace would be nice. It's not fine if you use it for a mass attention thing. This is also the worst tactic for a first meeting if people are doing something. It's fine if it's one person just happens to be in the room and if you want a first impression of a sick and weakly character, then go for it and make your character faint, but if there are more than one characters in one room and they are all busy, making your character faint and creating a loud crashing noise as she or he falls, is very disruptive.

The characters in the room will be forced to help your character since most of them are good people and they will have to stop what they are doing since your character interrupted them because of his or her dramatic fainting action. Dramatic sickness is just a big no.

Closing:
Well, that's all the general personalities that needs to be covered as of right now. As I find more general types of personalities, I will be adding more to this. You do not have to use the ideas that I gave you and I don't want people to always have a formulaic kind of entrance for their characters. Usually introductions are always a good way to start, but it's fun every now and then to come up with really funny ideas to get your character to get to know someone! Don't forget that this is an RP and it's okay to use your imagination! But you can always refer back to this if you ever get stuck and find that your character is having a hard time interacting with people!
