The Deep Sea Research Center (海洋探査人工島, Kaiyou Tansa Jinkou Shima?, lit. " Artificial Ocean Research Island" ), also known as Battleship Island, is a hidden island located far out in the middle of the ocean, in the very south-west corner of the world map of Final Fantasy VIII. It is an abandoned, half-sunken laboratory which was formerly used to research draw effects, however, other, less commonly known, research may have been going on.

Blue Light
The blue light in the middle warns vistors with a message "blue light leads to death." Those who reach the center and answer the mysterious voice's questions, fight Bahamut to claim him as a Guardian Force.

Cavern
After defeating Bahamut a hole appears on the ground. The player can't initially go down, but if they leave the Deep Sea Research Center and return, a save point has appeared and they can advance down the hole.

Floors
After defeating Bahamut the party can descend deeper into the facility. The player can access the next floor by expending units of steam pressure. The deeper the player advances in the complex the different fish they can see from the windows.

Steam Room
If the player expends the correct amount of steam in each floor they open access to the steam room on level 3 where they can get more steam pressure units.

Elevator
In the elevator room the door takes four pressure units to open, or the player may ask Zell to open the door without using any units if he is in the party. Using Zell wakes up the monsters in the lower parts of the facility. The player needs to conserve ten units to have enough to fight Ultima Weapon at the bottom.

Depths
In the areas after the elevator the player will encounter many strong monsters. The first area has a save point.

Bottom Floor
The bottom floor has a hidden save point and a device that requires the use of ten steam pressure units to summon the Ultima Weapon.

Somewhere along the way when Azura was walking the beach trying to find some place to stay that wasn't of human structures, she heard a certain voice in her mind, claiming she would gain her powers back, had she proved she was worthy to receive them again. She would have to go to the deepest and most unknown location in the world of Gaia, known formally as the Deep Sea Research Facility. A very old abandend structure that went deep into the sea. Upon accepting this mission, she would be teleported there by the 'ones above', and then, worked on proceeding her way there into the entrance.They had given her vague information on the place and stated it had very deadly, dangerous monsters lurking everywhere. Should she survive this mission, and reach the 'pearl' at the very bottom of the cavern, she would receive her powers upon touching it..

"H-how much...further do I have ...to go..? " Azura asked herself. She had been here for days, and still wasn't at the bottom yet.Though she was amazingly close. With no powers and no way to heal, this was pretty much amazing she had managed to get so far and escaped every encounter she had come across. Of course she got hit fifty percent of the time in her attempt to escape, when they had the upper hand of attacking first things didn't work out so perfectly. But still, she managed to escape them. Azura was already very well known for escapeing the dangers she got into nearly daily, but that was her life and she was used to it.

But not used to this.She was beyond tired, injured and nearly able to stand anymore much less walk and climb more steps down.These people were rather cruel, to take her powers away, and make her go on this 'test' to make sure she should possess the powers she had taken away. At the last step down, Azura collapsed to her knees, breathing heavily. That was when she heard a terrifying growl ahead of her and when she raised her head...She would see a Tri-face staring her down. "No...not...that kind.." She was dead..The creature suddenly opened it's jaws, as it's own little ability was cast upon her. Her vision would be come blackened, and poison now surrounded her body as it cast it's attack on her. This usually caused blindness, sickness from the poison and even confusion and sleep at times. Luckily she had no one there with her to attack or her powers for that matter! The question was, would the legendary escapee manage to escape THIS one?
