Ugh. Chem lab. Guen stared balefully at a bag of apples, cups, vinegar, and various other implements the instructor had requested they bring to class. Apparently it was something to do with browning apples. And acids. She had dark circles under her eyes - something most of her classmates probably wouldn't notice anyway. So, naturally, when the teacher sorted out the lab partners- she ended up paired with the one student whom she'd never seen before. Ugh. She tried to smile, but it had been a long and particularly cold night, and she was in a sour mood. She glanced up at her occasionally while arranging her supplies at her half of the workstation. ((THE EXPERIMENT: enzymatic browning !))

Ana wasn't sure what to do or how to act when faced with a person she hadn't met who was looking at her as though they'd sucked on a lemon. There was a smile, sure, but that smile made her feel a little uneasy? Maybe it was just the nerves of moving to a new place, enrolling into a new school, and suddenly having a new lab partner? Maybe it also had something to do with the fact her new partner looked like death warmed over.
"You look like death warmed over, are you okay?" It was....well, a nice way to start the conversation but it just wouldn't have been Ana to beat around the bush. Her lack of tact was no way to make friends but at the moment she was more or less concern that her lab partner looked like they were ready to fall over and die. Well, not die but they at least looked really tired. Perhaps there was something she could do for them considering her grade hinged on their efforts as well?

"Uh..." Guen was a little taken aback, and resisted the urge to check her reflection in the sink. Okay, so she'd looked kind rough this morning but she hadn't realized just how rough. She blushed a bit, and tried to turn her head so the other girl could only see her profile.
"Um, well, I um. I couldn't sleep. I uh...had some homework. And soccer practice. I'm Guenievere by the way, but you can call me Guen. Are you new?"
Ah, the art of deflection. She could go in the bathroom and to save her face later, for now she just didn't want to talk about it. She wondered where this girl had been in chemistry class at whichever school she'd transferred from. Would she need help catching up? At least today's experiment was relatively easy.

"I'm Anastasia Hughes but please, call me Ana. It's so nice to meet you Guen." Ana didn't even hesitate to reach over and grab Guen's hand, clasping it between both of hers before giving it a vigorous shake. She released it only after it seemed that she got her fill of shaking it in introduction, and she smile warmly at this new person friend lab partner. "And yes, I am new here. My family just recently relocated here and I was placed into the academy. It's an adventure that I am excited for."
Really, she couldn't wait to get out and see more of the city. Strange things were sure to happen and ana hoped they'd all happen for the best. Life before coming here had been exciting, sure, but a new place was just ripe for an adventure and for a good time. Making new friends was the first thing on her list and so she decided to turn her focus towards Guen. If she and her lab partner could get along then surely there was nothing she couldn't do!
Of course to even get started on getting along they'd need to get the experiment under way. Things like school-related classes weren't really hard for her thanks to her desire to learn more and more, but maybe the sleepiness of her partner would cause trouble. "If you'd like, we can maybe split the work load? Is there anything you'd like me to be doing?"

"Ah, um, nice to meet you too..." Boy, she was certainly enthusiastic. Guen didn't mind though, and nodded at her admission. "Where're you from, if you don't mind me asking?"
She then began to divvy out the supplies evenly across the table, and pointed at the worksheet they'd been handed. "Well, it looks like our first step is going to be carving them up in slices. We couldn't use the pre-sliced ones because they have like, preservatives apparently." She frowned at the sheet, skimming it.
"....Yeah, yeah, and then we put them in the cups. Oh, and we need to label them. Drat, do you have a sharpie?"

"Sharpies? Um...." Ana looked around and found her satchel, the blond quickly poking her hand inside and fishing around. She bumped a few things ( some gum, maybe a pencil ) and eventually fished out what looked to be a thin marker. "I have this thin sharpie, will it work?" She wasn't too fond of the thicker marker, it was hard to write with, and she handed it over to her lab partner without really waiting for an answer. "We don't need to peel them before slicing, right?"
Okay so she was asking a ton of questions for things that could have been easily answered by reading her lab sheet but Ana mostly just wanted conversation. It never hurt to ask questions and have your partner answer them because it was a good way to see if they wanted to talk to you or not. It was also a really good way to annoy them but Ana was hoping for the former rather than the latter. She could be a chatterbox if she wanted to and right now, she wanted to. Talking was good!
"I can cut up the apples while you write, if you don't want to have to hold the knife. I know you're sleepy so maybe I can help that way?"

"Sure, I can do the labels, let's see..." She glanced back at their supplies and started labeling which substance went into which cup. It took a second before she realized she handn't answered the girl's other questions. "Oh, I'm sorry! Uh, yes, this pen's great, and go ahead and slice them. I don't think peeling matters as long as some of the, er, meat of the apple is exposed." She was quite grateful of the girl's offer honestly, as she was fairly certain she'd butcher her hand on accident if she had to carve. She didn't seem to notice the girl had missed her questions, but it seemed like she wanted to chat and it would keep her from embarrassing herself by falling asleep.
"Today's lab is really easy. Last week we covered, like, combustion, and my other lab partner burned off his eyebrow." She glanced passively at a boy sitting a few rows away, who noticed her look and grinned sheepishly. "Do you like chemistry?"

"I'm from Russia. I like it here so far, but I'd like cold more." Ana responded to one of the first questions asked, totally skipping back in the order in which they'd been presented to her. She didn't feel bad doing so, it was very important to answer everything. "I am not sure I like chemistry very well but I'm more than glad to give it a try."
Everything, at least once or twice, was worth the old college try in Ana's mind. Her parents had taught her not to be so shallow, seeing as learning new things and going to new places was an important part of living, so naturally she wanted to experience it. Plus it was in her nature to be curious and tempt her fate with something new anyway so that was an added plus.
"Wait, you said burned off an eyebrow? That sounds pretty painful, is he okay?" She asked, reaching up and rubbing her own eyebrows out of felt empathy. She'd never lost her own eyebrows, not that she wished to try it, but something so risky as burning anything was certainly something she wanted to avoid. Even if she wanted to take a chance there was a limit to what she was willing to do. "You did not get hurt at all though?"Ravvlet okay so i lied it took me a little longer but HERE YOU GO

Guen made eye contact with the boy again, who glanced away nervously, and remarked, "Nah. He was alright. It was pretty funny though." Wow, she could see him blush from here. "It wasn't like, you know, fire. Just chemicals. He had to go to the nurse's office though." "You're from Russia?" Guen tilted her head to the side curiously. "... Cool." Blonde AND foreign? Some people just had ALL the luck.

"Oh, yes. I have photos of things from there if you'd like to see sometime. Papa and Mama always took me places with them before we came here, mostly because we all liked to adventure." Ana smiled and pressed her hands together, pleased to see that one of her first interactions with a lab partner at school was going so well. She had to be careful though, she didn't wish to brag and make it seem like she was so much better than others, but the desire to share with everyone sort of edged on the end of her mind.
As her partner mentioned the boy she worked with, as well as looked at him, Ana followed her gaze and waved. When he looked away she thought it was her own fault, prompting a momentarily hurt look, but she lowered her hand and decided that focusing on the task at hand was much more important. Perhaps later she would find him and ask him if he needed anything.
To take her mind off that, and to keep things going, Ana started in with the knife on the apples. It had been her original task after all and she took care not to take a slice out of her finger in the process. It wasn't really hard work, anyone could slice an apple if they were careful, but still she went a little slower than usual just in case. "After we have these all sliced, then what do we do?"
