The queen of the Amazons approached the pair of rogue males with a wary eye, though she held herself with pride, the way a queen should. Ebere had such glowing things to say about them, or at least about the one, and Hippolyta had felt perhaps it was time to take a chance and step outside the pride for the first time since... well. She would be far more careful this time. It was a comfort to know that members of the Elite Guard waited within the shadows of the trees, within shouting distance of the queen and consort. The same mistake would not be made twice.
Hippy stifled a frown, smoothing her face as her mate went to greet the dark-maned male, assuming that was the one she had spoken of before. That left the light one unpartnered and she approached him slowly, looking him over with somewhat of a critical eye. She had seen many males in her travels, but each one was different and unique from the ones before.
She bowed her head marginally, saluting him as an equal, or close enough. "Greetings stranger. My name is Hippolyta. I think you may have met my mate, Ebere, before. She has certainly met your brother." She said quietly, glancing at the two as they stood to the side, engaged in conversation. Ebere always had such an ability to talk to people... part of what she loved about her, the way she befriended people so well.

Asper was often dragged into situations by his foolhardy brother, and usually these situations required a gilded tongue when all was said and done. There were countless times that Atheris dragged Asper into this situation or that, and while Asper did not appreciate it, he did love his brother dearly. Quite obviously, this was another of these situations, and Asper's face was pinched. He'd forced himself to listen patiently as Atheris explained about the females that took other females as mates, females that required males only for breeding - and while Asper thought Atheris quite foolish, he was not one to deny his brother an audience. He balked when his brother spoke of Asper joining Atheris to meet the queen of said pride, and while Atheris was not going to overtly pressure his brother to join him, Asper had to admit that he was curious. And so he found himself drawn in to the area that Atheris led him, curious more than anything, and when his younger brother parted to speak with a rather fetching lioness, Asper found himself faced with a dark female. When she dipped her head, he did the same, and cleared his throat as he listened to Hippolyta speak. "I am Asper. My brother, Atheris... he ah.." Asper cleared his throat. How to breech such a delicate topic? "He speaks fondly of your mate."

Hippolyta's rounded ears lay back a little, though she swiftly throttled the jealousy that flashed to life at the thought of a male speaking fondly of her mate. Things had been different, once... she'd been friends with the male that had sired her precious Calypso, and had found refuged with a few when she was exiled. But... things had changed since coming back, and this was part of the healing she had chosen for her pride.
Some of the feelings leeched away when she turned to view her mate, the two speaking in a way friends will do. It was hard to feel anything but happy and content around Ebere. She was just that way.
"My mate has spoke fondly of your brother." Hippy commented back, trying to keep the shading of feeling from her voice. "And you as well, of course. Though I suppose what she has heard has come mostly from your brother. I admit, I'm not entirely comfortable here, but I do feel that I need to learn to let down my guard a little bit more, the way I used to... Though, I have of course taken sensible precautions."
Hopefully that would be enough of a warning for this male if he thought of doing anything untoward...

In all honesty, if Hippolyta was worried about one of the brothers acting unsavory, it would undoubtedly come from Atheris. More straight-laced and duty-bound than his brother, Asper was not want to make unwanted advances or place himself in a situation that would cause him more harm than good. No, Asper was the more intelligent of the two brothers, and it was a brand he took lightly. While he might be the first to call his brother stupid, nobody else was permitted to act in such a way. "I do hope you understand that my brother - and myself - we mean no harm. That is a solemn promise, I assure you, my Queen." Polite, always polite, even when the female he spoke to was not his Queen. It did not matter. There was no need for bad blood; it was obvious by Hippolyta's words that she was not going to take chances with her mate - or herself, for that matter. "Atheris has only given vague descriptions of the things he spoke of with Ebere. He is ... a kind lion, to be certain, but he lacks common sense." Asper cleared his throat and watched the dark lioness warily.

The dark lioness blinked at him with wide, red eyes, thinking on what he'd said. Well... there was really no reason to be distrustful or rude now. She'd done all she could to protect herself and her mate and had to trust in the strength of her guards to do the rest. Besides... she couldn't live her life worried about those from outside the pride. It was a good way to overlook deceit from inside the pride and shun a lot of good creatures that could be of great benefit to everyone and everything she held dear.
She nodded slowly, finally turning away and wandering a few steps along the edge of the tree line. It marked the invisible boundary of the pride and she followed it from habit. She'd walked it so many times before, her paws simply knew the way.
"Sometimes I wonder how much Ebere is the same way. She often surprises me with flashes of steel under that soft exterior. She is a shining example of one face of our pride, one that is often overlooked with some of the stories I've found outside our lands. We do not hate male, at least, not all of us. Most simply wish to live apart from them, or feel most comfortable with their own kind. Ebere, I think, could live wherever she chose... I'm glad she chose here though." She said softly. "She has so much of a mother's attitude that she can't help but make a good leader for a pride."
It was hard not to go on about the virtues of her mate. Ebere was always a favorite subject to talk about, but she wondered if he was bored by that topic.
"What is your home like? What brings you here?" She said as she walked slowly, changing the subject.

Asper's muzzle lifted in a wry smile. It was all so strange, really. "My brother and I were born and raised in a pride called the Ongozona'Ke. Our pride was much like your own, though there are males that call it home. The leader of the pride is female, as are most of the huntresses and guards. Females hold all of the council seats, as well - in fact, my own mother, Sebae, is one of the founding members." He chuckled softly, shaking his head and peering at his feet. "Males are not hated in my home pride, either. It is just that... Atheris and I, we wanted to see more of what the world had to offer. My brother has a wanderer's spirit, and I myself love him far too much to simply stand idly by while he finds various ways to get himself in trouble. In all honesty if he were less adventuresome, it is unlikely that we would have ever left the pride at all." With a shake of his head, he lifted his gaze to boldly meet Hippolyta's once more. "Females are to be respected," he said quietly, a sudden seriousness in his gaze, "and I hope you find that you can trust my brother and myself enough to ah.. assist yourself and your mate with this ... delicate situation." Somehow he'd turned the topic back to the original one, and it was obvious he felt foolish in doing so. It was also obvious that he felt it very important that this proud Queen understood that he was not planning on taking advantage of this situation.

It was interesting, to hear of another pride dominated by females. Till now, she had only ever known of the Kunanda, the pride her mother had visited and left her then-mate behind in. Last she had heard, though, that pride had grown thin in numbers and there had been a rumor it had dispersed entirely. It went a ways, to hear his background. He at least had respect for what a female could do, unlike some males she had met who thought her own good for bringing down small game and raising cubs. She'd never wasted much time on males like that.
Hippolyta's ears went back as he brought the purpose of this little visit up again, her eyes dropping to the dusty ground and waving grasses. She was silent a moment, wondering how to reply to that. She hadn't wanted to think about it... it was just like the first time she had ever tried to get with cubs (and failed to do so). Awkward and nerve-wracking.... The second time she had tried had been much easier. It seemed to help to get to know the male a little, before hand.
"You sound, perhaps, a little wary of this situation you've been dragged in to." She said softly, finally coming to a stop and settling back on her haunches. "Do you have cubs of your own?"

Asper narrowed his eyes briefly as he lowered his gaze to his feet, an ear flicking at the question. He knew the basics, had flirted with females plenty of times before but... "No," he said suddenly, lifting his gaze to meet hers. His eyes were bright and clear - he'd decided that there was no shame in what he was about to admit. Asper was not one to feel awkward over such an admittance, though he couldn't help but feel like a foppish juvenile. "I have never ah.. been in a situation where cubs might arise," he continued. "There has never been a reason to engage in such acts, with all honesty, my Queen." Whether or not she would find his softly spoken words charming or even endearing, well, that remained to be seen. "And to be truthful, if this will help your pride strengthen and grow... there is no way that I can deny any assistance I might be able to offer."

Hippolyta chuckled softly as she watched him screw up his courage to make such a bold statement, suddenly feeling older and maturer than she had.
"I failed, the first time I sought for cubs. I returned to my pride empty handed and ashamed. I grew up with only females and males were an alien species to me... stuff of stories. At least you understand, somewhat, how hard it can be to ask someone for something others take for granted..." She mused in silence for a moment, wondering a few different things. Finally, she spoke again.
"You know that, should there be any boys in the litter, they will have to be raised by someone else... or cast out when they come of age? Are you and your brother ready to take on that responsibility? Will you... be willing to part with children you may never see again?" Her voice was soft as she said it, her questions probing. She felt a need to ask these questions of him, as she probably would not have of another male. There was something in him, something she sensed, that made her speak up.
Strangely innocent and naive, yet strong of heart and mind... he would be a good father for her daughters, but at the same time, he was more than that. No matter what other lionesses might do or think... She saw him as a person, a being with his own mind and soul. These cubs would share as much of that spirit as they would of hers... and that wasn't such a bad thing.
"I don't ask to make you uncomfortable or to try to persuade you one way or the other... I simply... want to know your mind." She laid her ears back, feeling suddenly shy again, though not awkward now. She hadn't meant for the conversation to take such a turn, but it had helped her some.

Asper fell very silent as Hippolyta spoke, his gaze slipping once more to land upon the ground beneath his feet. Only when she asked him a question did he clench his jaw slightly, swinging his gaze back up to meet hers. He did not waver as he opened his mouth to speak. This was not something that the lion took lightly, and it was not a decision that he was making rashly. "I cannot say where my brother and I will end up after we leave this place, but... I would rather be a father to any sons that might come to be." He narrowed his eyes slightly as his vivid gaze met hers. Was this a condition that he was placing on the situation he found himself in? It sounded very much like one. "I will find a way to make my way here when the males are of an age to leave their mothers. I do not relish the thought of having any son of mine to be left to his own devices... as I'm sure you can understand, Hippolyta." Asper cleared his throat and fell silent once more though he continued to watch her closely. "This decision has not come easy to me, and I.. I would come back for my sons. And those of Atheris," he added on, almost as an afterthought.

The dark lioness smiled, nodding her head. It was good. She was rather relieved to hear him say that, really. Any male that choose to take on such responsibility was worth knowing, in her mind. It would be far easier for one to simply do the deed and leave. That he understood that there would be young lives from this... it eased some of the tension she had been feeling. It hadn't really been the thought of the act that had worried her, once she thought it over. It had been that she had to find a male suitable for it, and she had seen so few lately...
"Thank you, for that." She said softly, rising and pacing over to gently bump her shoulder against his. "I am glad, if for nothing else... I got to meet you and your brother. It eases a burden I didn't know I had, to know that there are males such as you out in the world." Hippolyta smiled as she paced away, glancing back over her shoulder.
"Why don't we go collect our two wayward loved ones, hmm?" She said softly, teasingly. "I think we might have some things to talk about together."
