It was dry and warm. The sun lingered overhead, bright against its sky blue background. Not a cloud was in sight and the critters were busy making use of the wonderful weather. Chipmunks skittered along the forest floor collecting seeds for a distant winter, whilst playful birds danced among the leaves of the Kell's forest, looking for twigs to build nests with.

Marble wasn't paying attention to the creatures, he had a specific goal in mind. Cool Down. Tongue lolling out and nose scenting, he was headed for the most desirable location on a day like this: The Kell's Run. He knew the lake wasn't too far off and as he padded through the forest the smell was getting increasingly stronger.

When he finally broke out of the forest and onto the pebbly shore of the lake, all his instincts went on mute.

Water!

Marble bounded across the rocks before splashing into the cool, crisp liquid. Exuberant, he padded in up to his chest and began to lap up the water as fast as he could. He wasn't paying any attention to his surroundings at this point. A puppy-like frenzy had overcome him and he was just enjoying the water.

Even if Marble had been paying attention, he may not have noticed the wolf that was already beside the lake. She was resting in the reeds, partly covered in mud and the occasional flick of her ear the only movement she made.

When the male wolf appeared, she was tempted to simply stand up and announce that this was her lake and that he had better move on. But she had learnt her lesson from the last time she had decided to try pushing an unknown male around.

That thought left Minnow pouting and she lay there for a long time watching the other wolf splash around.

… it sure looked like fun.

Eventually she stood, shaking off some of the mud and reeds, and padding out into the water. Her green eyes gleamed as she gave a short bark to get his attention.

Marble bounced, splashed and caught water droplets on his tongue. Little waves lapped against his legs and it became his own little game. Chase the waves till they hit the beach then tromp back out to find another 'prey' wave. This game held his attention for a little while until a bark interrupted his playing.

He paused, straightening up to his full height. His ears flicked in the direction of the sound and his head followed immediately after.

A brown two-shaded she-wolf with piercing green eyes caught his attention. She was already in the water, closer than Marble had anticipated, and he was mentally kicking himself for not keeping his guard up more.

"Hello?" His voice was tinged with a growl. The abrupt she-wolf's appearance set Marble on edge.

In response to his growl, Minnow’s posture shifted from defensively curious into overly aggressive. Her tail rose, her ears pricked forward and she bared her teeth in a silent snarl. So what if he was twice as big as her? Minnow had been bested by a male once, and though some part of her quivered with fear and asked her why she wanted to repeat her past mistake, she still stalked towards Marble.

Minnow stopped a wolf’s length from the male and glowered. “What’s your problem?” She demanded with a huff. “I was here first. Try speaking a bit nicer to the ruler of this lake.” She was in fact not a ruler of any lake. She usually patrolled the rivers, and she could hardly be called a ruler of them either. No, Minnow was just a little female trying to play alpha.

Marble's ears flicked back towards his head and if he hadn't been standing in the lake, he probably would have lowered himself into a crouch. As it was, he stood tense, body language signalling his anxiety. His lips had drawn back into a scowl in response to her aggressive approach, but he didn't appear to be ready, or willing, to attack the she-wolf.

"You are the ruler of the lake? really?" His tone was neutral with a slight dubious edge. He'd never heard of a lake being claimed as a territory before, and he couldn't determine whether this she-wolf was telling him the truth or not. She certainly did seem feisty enough to claim a lake as her own, but the real question was whether she had the support of a pack behind her.

Marble decided to dig a little deeper. "....if you are the ruler of this lake, as you say you are, that probably means that you have some kind of pack behind you I assume?" He left the question open, hoping that she'd give him a little bit more information on the number of wolves nearby and the potential danger he'd put himself in.
