She had found a book. It was rather general and only gave basic information, but there was a LOT of that basic information to look through. Sydney was fascinated, finding pictures of monsters that she had never even dreamed of. It was like the best extra credit type work she'd ever done, she admitted silently.
Her eyes were glued to the pages of the book even as she lifted one page to turn it. She didn't want to stop to turn the page, really, so she would set it up so she could flip as soon as she read.

Ofelia was just ...well, browsing. She'd done a lot of things in the short time it'd been since she came to the Island - what with going to Alaska (!?), punching people and being punched, and playing a game where her friend got sliced into ribbons as she fell. That all in all had been an adventure (she'd done some exploring too, couldn't forget that) but for now she just needed to. . . well, crash.
She wadded her way down into the dorm commons, a place she liked because it was usually occupied with people, and to her sadness she found that only one person was currently there and they seemed to be reading. Not wanting to outright disturb them since they looked to be focusing so much, Ofelia took the more subtle approached and tossed herself down into a chair with a very, very loud sigh.

She almost jerked. After that episode with the termites, Sydney was just a bit wary about loud noises. But that--that was one of those "I don't want to disturb you, but I WANT YOUR ATTENTION" sounds, right? Slowly she turned the page before looking up at the other female. "Hello," she said quietly. Izy complained.
Really, Izy, do you even know what doldrums are? she asked him as she waited for the sun hunter to reply.

"Oh, Ah'm sorry! Ah didn' mean ta bother ya from yer book!" She totally did and it looked as though it had been a success. Ofelia loved company, sure, but she didn't like always having to get the first word in. Sometimes it was best to let someone believe that they were the ones leading the conversation, not her. Whenever she did that she always felt so kinda proud of herself in a weird way too. Rue told her she was just retarded but whatever, moving along.
Okay, now to move the conversation along more. "Was it a good book? Ya seemed so inta it."

"It's a general book on the monsters we might be dealing with in the future," Sydney said. "It isn't very in depth, but it's still very much an eye opener," she admitted, getting the feeling she might have to SHARE her find. But... "Yes, Darkling, as if you weren't sharing it with me, already,> Izy said.
Barefoot--no, she's wearing flip flops, see?
Why would I think of another female's footwear as sexy?
"Oh, uh--would you like to see it?" Sydney asked, feeling awkward as she realized the silence had reigned for an entire minute.

"Um...how 'bout ya jus' read out anythin' that seems ta be the most interestin' ta ya? Ah've got a passin' interest in what we might be eventually fightin' but not enough ta really look inta'a book or sommin' for infos." In reality Ofelia wasn't much for reading, too many words and not nearly enough pictures, so she figured it would force the other person to speak with her more anyway. It was a win/win/win all things considered.
Inside her head Rue was totally mocking her as hard as possible but Ofelia wasn't really listening. She was instead positioning herself around so that she was laying on her stomach while looking at this new person, her feet resting above her head as she wiggled her ankles and made her flip-flops smack in alternating patterns. This was fun and she was curious enough to know what this new person thought to be important from the book. The teen had a general idea of monsters from movies and things but actual knowledge? None to be had.
She rolled off her stomach and onto her back, apparently the chair/coush was not comfy. "Anythin' good in there?"

"Well there are different types, it says, monsters, demons, undead, ghosts, and reapers," Sydney said hesitantly. "They've got a few examples in here, nothing deep, or anything, but... did you know that the term "monster" covers millions of different species?" she asked, her fascination with the subject starting to show as she spoke.
"They've only got a handful of them in the book, but they say anything that doesn't qualify as one of the other groups is classified as a monster." She frowned. "But I'm still not sure how WE tell the difference between monsters and demons," she admitted.

"Does it really matter, the difference that is? Our job is jus' ta shoot an' kill 'em, right? Or capture 'em?" Ofelia really didn't know what they would be doing because no one had explained anything to her. The one mission she'd been on had them taking pictures and her her freezing her a** off. No real clear explanation for the points of this club, other than the whole 'Hunter' and creepy offer she'd been given when she burned the shed down. No one had bothered to say why they needed weapons or to scout things out, but it didn't take a genius to gather they were going to destroy things.
She filtered the list of names through her head, trying to figure out the different things. "What's a reaper? They mean like a Grim reaper thing?"

"Yeah, I guess. They REALLY don't have much information on them," Syd said, frowning at the book. "I'm betting they're gigantic skeletons in black robes, you know, like in the movies. Creepy."
Izy said thoughtfully.
Do you know what they are, Izy? she asked him.
It's okay, she told him quickly. Don't worry. I'm sure it'll come back to you soon!

Ofelia rolled back onto her stomach and looked over at her new companion, her hands placed in front of her and her chin resting on the back of them. She raised an eyebrow at the remark about their appearance. "Um, wouldn' everyone know them ta be sommin' wrong if they looked like that? Fer some reason whenever Ah'd see stuff when Ah was younger mah brother never saw 'em." Well, he said he did but the things he said always had her full of doubts. Kinda like she said she'd see something with wings and he'd say it was purple - they just didn't see eye-to-eye.
Aren't you going to ask me what I know?
Newp.
Die in a fire.
Ofelia cackled as she stayed on her stomach, watching this other person. "Do ya think we're gonna fight witches? Ah know they look kinda human but aren't. Or are they?"

"That would be interesting, but aren't witches REALLY human?" Sydney asked blankly. "Wiccans, I think they call themselves. I mean, I think I used to have people accuse me of being a witch a lot..." She frowned, trying to remember. "I mean, what you believe or don't believe doesn't make you not human--it's only the not humans that are, well, not human."
Izy commented. Abruptly Sydney looked a tiny bit pink. No we are not reading a romance novel!!

"Anythin' that's got sommthin' a normal human shouldn't have, like magic or anythin' else, ain't a human no more. Ah got no problem takin' down sommin' that thinks it can wear human skin an' get away wit' it." Ofelia punched her hands together as if trying to emphasize a point. She was always more than willing to knock things down a few pegs, moreso now that she knew she could actually hit them and do damage, so it was somewhat exciting to know she could punch humanoid things and not get in trouble.
Rue told her that she was being stupid and primitive, but that the weapon was hardly surprised. Ofelia ignored her and continued to plow on into their conversation, delighted to be able to talk about something since the other person was joining in. It took at least two people to talk, always.
"Ah wonder if we're gonna see zombies an' stuff, if they're really real. Ah've always been curious 'bout things like that - the whole 'what we made up an' what's really out there'. That kinda thing." Ahh...so exciting.

"But going by that logic," Syd started out, only to be stopped by Izy.
the weapon told her, sounding quite amused.
But doesn't she realize--
"Well... wait, do you mean wearing human skins--you think they slaughter humans and wear their forms?" she asked, completely distracted by the morbid imagery.

"Nope, not that - Ah mean sommin' other than us that are humans. Ah'm well aware we got powers an' such now ta fight back, but the power is our weapons - not from us. Witches an' such get it from wit'in, yeah? Wit'out our weapons we're jus' normal peoples, so Hunters an' such dun count if yer trying ta say that." What that what this person was trying to hint at? It sounded like she was, or at least they sounded like they were beating around the bush, and Ofelia frowned at her companion's supposed attempt to dig at her. The trainee wasn't as stupid as her questions lead on, if maybe this person was thinking that.
"As fer wearin' human skin, ya ever hear someone say sommin' 'bout a person jus' bein' a beast in human skin on account they act nothin' like a human should? That's what Ah mean, though Ah've heard stories 'bout monsters an' stuff that do wear people 'round like jackets." Skinwalkers, she thought they were called, or something. Dopplegangers? Meh, it was hard to remember and she didn't really care to.

"I see," Syd said. "But isn't the reason we were brought into this the fact that we could see things that others couldn't? Shadows, hints of things that shouldn't be there?" she asked, curious as to what the other girl thought on that fact. "Doesn't that make us different from normal humans to begin with, weapon or not?"
