The sun was just dipping to the horizon and as long as he didn't look directly west, Nap's eyes could tolerate the twilight comfortably. He pushed his way through the shrub brush that lined the sand dunes by the shore. The weather was peaceful at the moment, partially cloudy but dry. The sky glowed red with the setting sun. Behind him a thin line of trees hid the bulk of the academy, though it's spire could still be seen piercing the starry sky above him. Nap took a deep breath of the cooling air, feeling almost relaxed for once. This time of night was the closest Earth came to resembling his home. The fact that human's had poor night vision was just an added bonus. Though he kept it on his wrist, Nap didn't have to turn on the hologram projector as long as he was on academy grounds.
Nap scanned the beach in front of him. Experience had shown that what he was looking for was rarely found out on the open sand. He usually stuck to the thicker grasses. He couldn't stomach most of what they served food wise at the Academy. Vegetables and a few fruits were about it and even then, if they were cooked too long or mixed with any sort of dressing or sauce it made him sick. Thankfully Earth had a wide range of insect life. Nap had discovered in his first few days that most were in fact edible and quite pleasing. The Academy didn't seem to thrilled about adding bugs to the menu though. They fed him well enough but it didn't stop him from going out in the evenings to forage.
Nap turned his eyes back to the grass and crouched down. He rustled about, hoping to scare up something he could catch. The little jumping ones were some of his favorites.

A large, fat bug crept along the ground, pushing blades of grass aside and leaving a visible trail in it's wake. Sometimes it would spring up and land on it's back, tiny feet wiggling in unison until it somehow managed to get them back below itself. It had wings, one of which stuck awkwardly out to the side and the other of which seemed glued in tight to it's body, and the overall effect made it seem as though the creature simply couldn't fly with a wounded wing, but it was doubtful something so fat could take flight with such small wings anyway. The proportions of the creature seemed a little... off, and anyone familiar with bugs might have discounted it for it's bright silver color or it's size (very close to a ping-pong ball) as something natural straight off. It didn't seem to mind the rustling and kept up with it's strange crawl-jump-wiggle-jump-crawl pace undisturbed.
In the distance and nestled deep into the grass, Isaac stared off in the direction of the bug before slowly making his way towards it, idling here or there or making a show of looking for the bug. Truthfully, he knew exactly where it was, but it wouldn't have been a good game of hide and seek if he went straight to him, would it? And he couldn't actually see Nikolai or much beyond the blades of grass in front of him, but focusing in on manipulating Nikolai gave him a directional anchor.
Right now, Isaac smiled to himself, he was like a cat stalking it's prey. And that was neat, because Nikolai was usually the one to try to find him. He slunk down deeper into the grass, inching up as slowly and quietly as he could. Almost there... just another foot or two now and he could reach out and grab it...
The bug seemed to take notice and hopped away, landing on Napoleon and scuttling up the alien's arm.
Isaac, meanwhile, fancied that Napoleon had just hopped onto a stick that was stuck in the grass, and he was going to pounce up and catch Nikolai against it.

Nap froze, bent over in the grass as the shiny little creature crawled into view. He'd never seen a bug like that one before. Napoleon grinned, this thing looked even better than the little jumping ones he was after. It was huge! He watched it make it's way towards him with it's odd clumsy gait. This was going to be too easy.
He didn't even flinch when the bug jump to his arm. It was shockingly light for such a large beetle. Nap hoped it wasn't all air inside. That would be a disappointment. With his focus on the beetle Nap didn't even notice the noises in the grass right beside him. He watched it crawl it's way up his arm and in a flash had snatched it up and stuffed it whole into his mouth.

Three things happened at the same time: One, Nikolai was snatched up by an alien looking for lunch, two, Isaac pounced from the grass to tackle Nikolai against the 'branch' he was on, and three, what he thought was a branch was almost certainly not a branch unless they grew pink.
There wasn't time to stop himself from crashing into the small alien boy, and he took them both tumbling down to the ground in a messy pile of limbs. As soon as they'd hit the ground Isaac made a strange startled noise and pulled himself away from the pink thing, the shock quickly being replaced by recognition.
He winced and pushed himself up, offering a hand to other boy. Jheez, that was probably not a good way to make friends with someone so shy. "I'm really sorry, I didn't mean to do that... I was trying to find Nikolai, and I..." Isaac look startled for a moment as he glanced around.
"I... don't know where... He should be here, this shiny silver thing... Have you seen him?"

A lure! His peace was shattered as something came flying out of the tall grass and slammed into his side. The bug had been a lure and now HE was the one who was going to be eaten! A strangled shriek escaped Nap before he was sent rolling with his attacker. His skin glistened and turned hard as granite as they tumbled.
When they came to a halt Nap got a look at his attacker. It was only a human child, at least it probably wasn't going to eat him. The kid looked familiar...Nap knew only one human who was that small. He flipped onto his hands and feet and shrank back defensively, spreading his wings wide. The prince was asking about something called a Nikolai. Nap had no idea what he was talking about. He tongued the bug into his cheek, glad for a moment that he at least hadn't lost it."What's a Nikolai?"

Isaac didn't note the change in texture or resiliency in the other's skin, noting only that ouch, that really hurt, and good, the little guy didn't seem hurt. When his hand was ignored and Napoleon shrank back-- again like a startled cat-- Isaac himself shrank back to give the other more space. He didn't want him attacking, and there was something about the boy's posture that he couldn't place but was certainly a set up for a fight-or-flight response.
Nikolai began to lose his shape as Isaac's attention slipped, becoming a bit more fluid but staying put.
"He's my pet. He's silver, and... uhm... looks kind-of like this..." Isaac reached into his pocket and pulled out a small glob of roskyy-- the other half of Nikolai, which he'd taken off to better suit their game. "Uhmn, but looks a lot more like this..."
Isaac poked and prodded at the glob until it resembled the bug from earlier, if far rougher in shape. "He's... here... somewhere... I think... Have you seen him?"

Napoleon mouthed the bug, frowning as it went gummy. Maybe he wouldn't look for more like it. It wasn't that pleasant tasting and normally bugs kept their shape till he started chewing at least!
Nap came out of his crouch slowly, watching Isaac intently as he pulled out more of the roskyy. He remembered Isaac had been playing with that same stuff back in the Control room. Nap hadn't seen anything like it out here tonight though and was about to say so when Isaac began to mold it. He crept closer as it began to take shape.
Nap's eyes grew wide when Isaac was finished. It was a bug! Just like the one...He gagged. Nap quickly dropped the beetle from his mouth into him palm, looking at it with horror as it no longer resembled the creature he'd been trying to eat.

Isaac smiled at the new bug before holding it out in upturned hands towards Napoleon. Maybe if he got a closer look, he'd be able to tell? It wasn't much of a guaranteed thing, but Nikolai had been right where he was just a moment ago...
When Napoleon gagged, Isaac drew back and pulled the roskyy sculpture in closer as though to protect it from... a hairball or something; it sounded like Napoleon was going to cough up a hairball. (Maybe that was just because he kept thinking of the other as cat-like, though.)
When something was spat out into the boy's hand, Isaac leaned forward just to check and see if it was-- though it was just a half-stable glob of roskyy. Isaac's eyes widened for a moment and he grabbed it up, frowning as he looked it over.
"Oh, Nikolai... I'm sorry, I shouldn't have let you go so far. I... Thank you, Mister, for returning him to me."

Nap's eye twitched as Isaac snatched the roskyy blob from him. He tried to work the taste off of his tongue. He couldn't believe he'd almost EATEN that thing! "That's a Nikolai? What is it?!" Nap was offended by the roskyy, as if it was Nikolai's fault for not being a tasty little bug.
He looked back up at Isaac noting the boy's frown. Had he killed it? It certainly didn't look like it was alive...but then again it had been moving about on it's own before he'd tried to eat it. Erp, if he'd killed it...the prince wasn't going to be very happy with him. "...Is it dead? I didn't want to..." Well actually he did, but that was before he knew it belonged to the prince. Had he known...he probably would have bolted the moment he saw it.

Isaac's frown deepened when Napoleon asked what 'it' was. "He's not an 'it'! How would you like it if I started calling you an 'it' just because I didn't know what you were?" It was quiet for a moment before the younger hero slapped the two bits of roskyy together and crouched down on the ground, poking and prodding at the larger ball.
"He can't die." He pinched onto a bit of the material and stretched it out, and then did the same on the other side. He smoothed it out here and there and added detail until it looked like another small sculpture of Napoleon-- though this one moved in slow, jerky movements. "He's not alive."
Isaac made a face and pressed his tongue against the inside of his teeth, holding out the new miniature to Napoleon. It flapped it's wings once and floated from his hands very slowly before dropping back down into them. "But he's not an 'it', see?"

Napoleon shrank back as Isaac scolded him. Yep he'd pissed him off. Nap glanced about wildly, looking for the best route to escape by. He was pretty sure by this point that on average the human's were a slow species. The knowledge gave him enough courage to get close to them. Plus the hologram he'd recieved at the ball kept them ignorant of what he was. Nap's hand went to his wrist but hesitated. If he turned it on now the Prince would know his human disguise. He'd have to wait till he was ought of sight.
The sound of the roskyy slapping together brought him back to the moment. The light was dimming but Napoleon's large eyes could see clearly what Isaac had made. "It- He's like me!" Nap hastily corrected himself, looking up at Isaac fearfully. "Are there other Nikolai's?" The hesitant question came slowly.

The little silver creature in Isaac's hand took up his attention too much for him to notice how flighty Napoleon looked-- he didn't have any idea that the alien was about to run off. He couldn't have caught him if he did, particularly not with the way he seemed to climb all over everything without a second thought.
Isaac smiled when Napoleon recognized what he made. Good. It wasn't perfect, it was shaped a little wrong and it didn't move as fluidly as Napoleon-- but it was recognizable, and that made him happy.
"I tried to make you one earlier, but there were so many people, and I shouldn't have, and... ... No, Nikolai is the only one, but... there's more of what he's made out of."
Isaac dropped his hand but the creature stayed in the air, flapping it's wings too slowly to be a likely form of suspension. "It's what I do, why I'm here." He stuck his tongue out and pulled roskyy in a thin string from a vacant space in the air in front of him.
"Like this. It's called roskyy. Neat, huh?"

"I saw it. This one is closer." He poked Nikolai gently. It felt just like the bug had. Nap shuddered, recalling the feeling of it melting in his mouth.
"Why you're here?"Nap still was confused about the purpose of this place. It was a school but not like normal schools on this planet. He'd already noticed the extra abilities most of the humans here seemed to possess but without encountering other humans Nap didn't realize it was something that wasn't normal.
Nap thought a moment, a frown on his face. "Can all Prince's do that?"
The little pink alien's already large eyes bugged out as Isaac pulled the long string of roskyy out of the air. "You make it?"

A grin crossed Isaac's lips briefly as Napoleon reached out to touch Nikolai, but it faded to one of confusion when he pulled back. He was about to ask when the alien asked for him to explain his own situation a little, and... well, if he didn't know...
He thought about how to explain for a moment, and Napoleon moved onto a few more questions. Princes and making roskyy, huh? How was he going to answer those?
Isaac's head listed softly to the side as he thought about it, and when he finally had answers, he smiled again.
"Not everyone here can do things. Uhm... not all people have powers; most people don't. It's hard for them to be here because we're here to become heroes-- to stand up for those who don't. To make sure bad things don't happen; to protect them."
He sucked in a deep breath and began curling the roskyy into a loose spiral. "And not all Princes, no. I'm the only one. I'm special." Maybe, if Napoleon were more familiar with humans, he might have seen the spark of mischief in Isaac's eyes. He did his best to keep it subdued, so maybe he'd get away with it...
"And I don't quite make it... or... I do. Kind-of. See, there are these places-- rifts where things meet. You can't see them, but I know where they are. I kind-of... pull on them like a string on an old shirt or something. They unravel, kinda. They never empty; they never stop existing, but it feels like that a bit. It's a little rougher... like dragging a stick against concrete or sparking a rock against another. But what I pull out is this."
