When he was much younger, near the age of two, his father was almost killed by an "accidental" fire in the fields caused by the Capitol. Darby received 3rd degree burns on nearly 40% of his body. Bentley was recognized as one of the most intelligent students in all of Panam after school testing and visited the Capitol to be honored for his academic excellence. This was 5 months before Darby's fire incident. Bentley has never figured out what he had done, but feels almost certain that he was the reason for that attack on his father.
