Danny stared at her ashen walls, as she had been doing for the past couple of minutes. After punching the perky orange into a charred version of their old self, she had just settled into doing nothing. Staring at her refrigerator, and doing nothing.
She hated this school. She hated it so much right now. It made her meet stupid people that just left her at the drop of a hat. No one actually cared about her here. Well that wasn’t right. She had a lot of friends- not a surplus or anything, but more friends than she’d made back at home. Most demons at home wanted to talk about makeup and the maul. Not really Danny’s forte, unless you counted the toy store in the maul?
Angrily, Danny gripped the lantern off of her tail, sliding her hooked tail out with ease. The lantern had originally been for protecting her friends- the undead ones yes, but not just them. Roch’s pants, Rikki’s hair, Moure’s skin, Yin’s shirt. It was a symbol of all the hard work she had done making friends … and her first boilfriend. Her fingers moved listlessly over the iron wrought case. The inside had been badly damaged from the last few months, the inside becoming more and more blackened every day. It was getting old and overused, being pushed to its limits. The glass had cracked in one spot from an incident while she was climbing.
Upset, Danny continued to rub the lantern aimlessly while thinking. Rikki, Rikki, Rikki. She’d really messed that one up, hadn’t she. He had been so gentle with her, and she’d freaked out over a simple insult. Well, it was an insult that hurt a lot, but that’s just what it was. A simple insult. It was her fault he was gone now though.
Gone, just like Roch. Though she couldn’t explain why, that one hurt a lot more than Rikki leaving. She couldn’t think about his empty dorm without beginning to tremble in a foreboding way. Rikki she could understand; Danny had caused that one, it made sense. Roch though … Roch had just left. Danny pressed the lantern to her forehead, her jaw clenching in an attempt to control the shaking and sniffing. All at once, her had snapped and she threw the lantern down, causing the glass to smash while the iron frame bent inwards. Her lantern was officially useless.
Danny slammed against her kitchen wall and slowly slid down it, her fiery claws singing the wallpaper as she went. Why did Roch have to leave? Why did he do this to her? He knew she was upset. He knew. In a flash of anger, Danny almost felt like Roch was to blame for all of this, but the feeling passed almost immediately. Of course he wasn’t the cause of this. She was. This was all her fault. She’d annoyed Rikki with her lack of … well anything, and then annoyed Roch doing the same thing. Danny, with her lack of any true cognitive effort, couldn’t see any other reason he would just leave. A kidnapping wasn’t even in her mind; Roch would put up too much of a fight, and he would never leave his phone. It just wasn’t an option to Danny, even if it was the truth.
Just then, Gamyiel came scampering around the corner, investigating her room, searching for the source of the crashing noise. Clearly satisfied by his deductions, the little treat noticed Danny against the wall. Like a squirrel, he climbed up her leg and rubbed his face against her stomach. Idly, Danny knocked the treat off, irritated by the soft furry touch. G gave her an upset look, then marched off to the closet before Danny could even get in a word. Great, now G was gone too. Just great.
She was sick of this. So very sick of this. With a shaking hand, she pulled out her phone and called her mother. A dial tone at first, ringing, and then-
“Danny? Danny dear whatever are you calling me for? Mummy’s very busy right now-“ her mothers voice rang through the phone, she could hear the party in the background already.
“Sorry mom. I just- … What was that one school you wanted me to go to?” Danny replied, her voice cracking a little, not that her mother noticed.
“Griswalda’s School for Demoness’?” her mother’s annoyed tone came over the phone. Clearly she had other people she was supposed to be talking to right now.
“Yeah that one. I want to go there,” she didn’t, “Can you transfer me?” Her voice hung stagnant in the air. She was being rash, but at the time Danny thought it was the proper thing to do. Well, perhaps part of her did want to leave. She wanted to go to a place where she wasn't constantly reminded of Roch or Rikki. Everything reminded her of them, and it hurt twice as much to have to smile through it. Seeing the reaper's dorm was the worst. She wished she could just burn the entire damn building down. Yes, going someplace new sounded really nice right about now.
There was silence from the other end of the phone, her mother was moving into another room. Danny could tell because the voices slowly faded away and she heard a door close faintly. Finally, her mother said, “Of course I can dearest, but it will have to wait until the morning.”
“Okay,” Danny said emotionlessly.
“Dannydear, I can’t help but wonder why you want to make this switch. Not that I blame you- I heard that school was … involved with some shady business recently.” Danny bit back the urge to defend her school. “It’s just a mother simply needs to know these things!”
Danny held her breath for a moment. As much as she wanted to tell her mother, she knew the other woman would never understand. Besides, it sounded a tad silly to say “two boils left me.” It would take hours to explain it to her mother. “I … yeah, it’s the shady business mom. I’m worried about my safety,” she lied into the phone.
Another silence, then, “Well if you insist dearest. I just knew you would get tired of that Amityville. I told your father from the start- she needs to go to Griswalda’s!” Her mother let out a laugh like the entire ordeal was over (though quite frankly, for her mother it probably was).
“Thanks mom,” Danny said quietly.
“Anything for you screechie. In the morning I’ll talk to your school. Stay put until then!” The other line went silent, the phone quietly buzzing with silence now.
Right now it was midday, meaning she had all afternoon and night to pack, and a day or so giving how long the transfer would take. Danny’s head knocked back against the wall. It was going to be a long night.
