Hugin sighed softly.
This argument felt like it had been dragging on forever. Well it wasn't really angry enough to be an agrument. More like a differing of opinions? Whatever it was, it felt akin to him chasing his tail in circles for hours.
Though why he'd be chasing his tail, he had no clue.
"Vetis, I'll be fine," Hugin said in his soft, patient voice, sounding a bit tired. "It's actually not that far."
The debate? Hugin wanted to go back home to visit his mothers and brother, and tell them that he had found a mate. His mothers had never met Vetis, but Munin had. That's what had sparked the second condition, and the one Vetis was objecting to most...
"You can come with me next time, but this time I have to make the trip alone. You and Brother argue too much, it would be better if you weren't there when I tell my family the news."

It was clear he was losing this fight.
The male did not like this idea, nor did he like the others that spouted from Hugin's mouth. He never had thought it was a choice for him to come next time, he simply thought it was a given. It was clearly obvious to anyone with sight that he was frustrated, however, he hid it well from Hugin, mostly because he did not want to add to Hugin's discomfort.
"I do not argue with Munin. We simply disagree at times."
Why was it such a huge ordeal, him coming along? More frustration kicked in, the dark furred male's sparkles growing thicker in response. "What if I promise to be gentle with Munin? Besides, wouldn't it be odd if you told them and I wasn't with you?"

Hugin sighed, trying not to let his mate's energy influence him. He had always been able to read Vetis' moods. Maybe not all of them all the time, but he knew Vetis better than even his own family.
"Not when I explain. Munin will just be glad to get some time with me. Arcana is a gypsy and won't find it unusual. Wynter will understand if I explain."
Most found it odd that Hugin called his mother's by their names. Arcana and Munin certainly did, Wynter just accepted it in that calm, placid way of hers. It was just too odd to say Mom and Mother, not to mention confusing.

This time, he did show frustration, letting out a loud, unsteady sigh. His head cocked to the side like a bird, fidgeting with the earth between his tails. It took him all his will not to just declare that Hugin was not going alone, however he bit back his words.
It was unreasonable to try and control his mate. He could remember now, this was almost the exact reason he didn't reach out and steal Hugin in the beginning. He was afraid of his need to possess Hugin completely, to devour his love and make him only his. To never let Hugin a inch away from his side.
Yet, now he trusted himself to control this demon inside him. Having met a vixen named Cascade he had been convinced that this was a normal feeling for someone in love, and everyone had to balance that emotion.
"I worry something will happen." Vetis sighed lowly, viewing his mate with narrow eyes. "I worry you will get hurt."

Hugin followed his mate's voice and stepped forward, pressing his forehead against Vetis' shoulder.
"I'll be fine," he said, trying to put as much confident reassurance as he could into his tone. "I used to live alone for the most part before we came together, I can manage a few days on my own again."
He pulled back, eyes roaming sightlessly. "Besides, it's only a few days away. I'll be back in a week, no more than two at the very most. It shouldn't even run that long, neither Wynter nor Arcana are clingy parents."

His mates movement did reassure him enough, sighing gently. "Yea, but I visited a lot," He grumbled, though it was apparent that he was giving in.
"I'll give you a week and a half." He sighed, looking up at him with narrow eyes. "And if a major storm happens or I hear of an event happening near or on the way to your parents I'm going to look for you."
Hng. He had a horrible feeling about this.

"Stalker," Hugin chuckled, smiling and leaning for to press against Vetis again.
"Sound fair though," he condeeded, pulling back and wiping at the blood starting to flow around his eyes. It very cat-like how he cleaned his face, wiping away blood with his paw and licking his paw clean, repeating the process until he couldn't taste blood or at least didn't take much.
"If I leave today I'll make it to a safe point by nightfall. Sooner I get there, sooner I can return."

"Stalker? I protest that." However, he smiled when his mate rubbed his eyes, kneading the ground. "Leave today?" He grumbled, ears flicking back. Wait, Hugin was going to leave today? He frowned at Hugin, letting out a low huff.
"You better not forget to tell your brother I have no intention of giving you up." The male grumbled, shaking himself off, leaves flying here and there. The male glanced at the sky, looking over at Hugin once more. "There will be rain soon. Find a safe place by then."

Hugin smiled reassuringly. "Of course, on both accounts." He tilted his head up and sniffed the air, taking his own measure on the weather, then "looked" back down towards Vetis.
"One week, no more than two. I'll be back soon, my heart." Hugin turned and walked off into the trees, soundlessly blending in with the scenery.

When Hugin left, Vetis let out a low whimper, folding his arms and flicking his tail right around his body. Dammit. He hated when Hugin wandered to far, but he wasn't one to force Hugin to do anything. He'd wait patiently, like a good mate.
Mate. A smile twitched onto his lips. God he loved saying that. God, he loved knowing Hugin was his, and he was Hugin's. Hnnn. This would be a long week.

SKIP Hugin had been traveling and partially into the night. Light didn't make a difference to the blind fox, and he knew where he wanted to stop to sleep before continuing his journey.
His brow furrowed as he tilted his head skyward, subconsicously cringing towards the ground as he did so. All day he'd felt the pressue in the air changing. Everything smelled like a normal bout of rain was on its way, but his instincts were shrieking that something was very, very wrong.
Hugin shook his head, trying to clear his mind before irrational fear gripped him. It was probably just being away from Vetis for the first time since they'd made it official between them. Trying to place his worries aside, he moved towards his shelter, sniffing to make sure no one else was using it as a home.
He was close to the moutains, where these boulders had probably once rested. Now they were lumped together, and if you knew where to look they formed a small cave that was sheltered from wind and rain and could be quite cozy. He found the entrance with no problem and wiggled inside, settling down and trying to relax for the night.

CRASH!
Hugin jolted awake, and instantly cringed into the side of the cold rock as another deafening crash sounded overhead. He whimpered, covered his ears with his paws in an attempt to keep the sounds from disorienting him.
Outside his shelter a vicious storm was tearing up the land. Trees were uprooting, rain caused flooding and mudslides, rivers swelled and pelted along, deadly with its cargo of tree trunks and rocks being carried along in the swirling waters.
Morning dawned on a scarred land. Deep in the forest was a series of boulders that had once formed a small cave. Now, there was nothing but a smooth expanse of rock with not even a crevice to be seen.

His heart hadn't stopped aching. His mind hadn't stopped racing. His breath hadn't softened. Vetis was pushing himself to the breaking point, his body torn and fur dripping with thin lines of blood.
He had spent the night in a cave, though his heart wanted to find Hugin. The storm was savage, it was violent and destructive. He couldn't go out and find Hugin, he'd die in that weather. What use would he be if he was dead? He knew he wouldn't find his mate in time, and yet he almost betrayed his logic. The only thought that had prevented him was the fact that if he died, which he probably would have, then Hugin would be on his own. Alone in the world, and he might even never discover Vetis' fate...
The second the sun rose he had leapt out, leaping over stones, falling in thorn bushes, and plowing through the destruction the storm had brought. He didn't care if he was hurt, his heart needed to find Hugin. He needed to get him, now. Today. He...
What if Hugin was hurt? What if... a tree had fallen on him? Hugin was smart and capable, he had to find shelter quickly. He didn't doubt his mates ability to do that... right ?
Yet the images flowed. A dead Hugin, torn apart from the trees. Trapped between two trees. Swept down a river. His heart hurt and his chest tightened at each thought. Why? Why hadn't he...
Why had he just let him go by himself?

Hugin was curled up in a ball of damp, shivering purple fur. The male was caked in mud and blood, leaves and small twigs clinging to the sticky mass. He let out a tiny whimper and he contracted further into himself, trying to retain what little heat he had and still lost in the horror of the storm.
He had huddled in the shelter of the rocks, back pressed against the wall furthest from the entrance with his paws still pressed over his ears. He could still hear the fury of the storm, could even feel it pressing against the boulders that formed his shelter.
Halfway through the course of the storm he'd felt the boulders begin to shift, and knew he had to brave the elements. As much as it terrified him, the thought of being crushed between rocks being ground together by the wind was worse.
The instant he stepped outside his little cave the wind had plucked him up and slammed him to the ground. Hugin spent most of the night as a toy for the wind, staggering wildly and running into things as he looked for some kind of shelter. He'd gone on memory alone, trying to run into deeper forest where there might be at least a reprieve from the wind. He was unsure of how successful he'd been, for the wind continued to slam him about and change his sense of direction.
The worst was when he got caught in the river. He didn't know how far it had swept him along, all he knew was he fought desperately to stay above the water and swam with all his might towards the wind which he at least knew was blowing from the land. It had been terrifying, not knowing what was up or down, sideways or forward, nor when something might hit him from above or below.
When he got out of the water he'd managed to run with trembling steps until the sound of the river faded into almost nothing. He'd collapsed then, with no energy to continue further even if his life depended on it.
Thankfully nature had sated her rage and the storm had moved on, leaving Hugin, cold, wet, dirty, injured, and lost.
He tucked his head tighter against his chest, thinking of his beloved Vetis and how much hurt he was causing his mate. He was only alive by sheer force of will. It would have been easier to fall into the warm, dark, comforting lull of eternal sleep. It if were only himself he would have given in long ago. But Hugin refused to destroy Vetis like that.
And so he clung to life.

He reached the forest in record time, later he'd compliment his speed and ability, though right now he was just a tad distracted. Hugin's scent was everywhere and yet at the same time he couldn't pin-point where. His throat produced a loud, frustrated growl, claws tearing up the soil beneath him as a fit of rage consumed him briefly.
When he was done being a child (having realized he was wasting time), he shook himself off, mentally shaking the anger, and calmed himself. He'd need to focus to find Hugin...
"Hugin?!" He cried out, almost loud enough to hurt his lungs. "Hugin?!" Padding forward, one of the strongest scents of Hugin was inside a cave, though it was caved in. Fear had eaten at his heart, however when he began to dig and noticed that the scent diminished here his body relaxed, sighing in relief. No, the scent of blood would be here if Hugin was crushed....
So onwards he went. "Hugin?!"

Hugin began to shiver. Despite the fact that he was as curled up as he could possibly be without merging his face to his body, cold was still setting in. Dark oblivion swam at the edge of his senses, whispering to him. It didn't understand why he fought so much against the inevitable. If he just gave in all the pain and hurt and cold would vanish.
'Vetis,' Hugin thought, clinging to the name. 'I can't leave Vetis.'
Why not, the darkness asked. If he just gave in, he wouldn't even remember his mate. There was no pain in oblivion.
'No,' Hugin thought, a bit more firmly. 'No oblivion is painless if I have to leave without Vetis.'
Fine, the darkness whispered. It could wait. He would give in eventually.
'We'll see.'
