The long and short of it was simple: working sucked. Elle's week had been nothing but work--the horrid, icky chores that nobody else wanted. Such was the life of a Trainee. If she had to clean up one more unidentifiable puddle of god-knows-what she was going to have a psychological meltdown.

She had returned to her quarters, a tiny sliver of a room that she shared with ALL THE TRAINEES EVER. Much to her dismay. But there was nothing she could do about that. She stripped down, tossed her uniform at the laundry basket (missing by several inches), and stormed off to the showers to wash the layer of grossness off of her skin. She didn't care that she was half naked. If anyone was about, they were welcome to enjoy the show.

Unbeknownst to Elle, her poor uniform toss had knocked over a stack of papers on the floor, uncovering two nondescript white envelopes--both of which had the word "URGENT" stamped on them in bold red letters.

Arcadie's day had been somewhat more merciful than Elle's, comprised of basic duties in the clinic such as washing linens and restocking various medical supplies. She didn't exactly return to the room smelling fresh as a spring flower, but she was not in such a rush to remove the outermost layers of her skin that she would overlook the disheveled uniform that didn't quite make its way to the hamper and the toppled papers strewn in its wake.

"Eeeelllle," she called halfheartedly after the other trainee, "you've made a mess!" Not that she expected the woman to return and sort out said mess, so Arcadie tasked herself with the organizing of the sad heap. She tossed the discarded uniform into its proper container and knelt beside the papers to shuffle them into some semblance of order, though the glaring red labels caught her attention. Common courtesy dictated that it was nothing but unethical to go reading another's mail, but an ingrained sense of nosiness concern for her comrades led her to inspect the letter that peeked out from the envelopes torn seal - just a little look out of curiosity for what sort of letters one would receive as a member of Team Rocket...

God, showers were paradise. Even if someone was using her sixty dollar shampoo. Thank god it wasn't her toothpaste, that would be so weird. It would serve them right if they ever tried--her toothpaste was of the whitening variety and it tasted like bleach and a** mixed together into a horrific taste-bud killing poison. But her teeth were white. And that was all that mattered.

Elle didn't hear Arcadie call her--the sound of the water pelting all around her drowned out all but the loudest noises. So it was a few minutes later that Elle slunk out of the shower, a fluffy pink towel wrapped around her body. Her hair was similarly bound in a white towel, and she wore her shower shoes--gel flip flops that protected her from the germy shower floor.

She walked back into the room to find Arcadie holding some mail. But wait--it wasn't just any mail, it was the mail. The mail Elle had tried so hard to forget, the mail that nobody could ever know about.

"Arcadie! What are you doing?!" she exclaimed, her eyes wide with shock--or was that fear in her turquoise eyes?

She hadn't read far before the sound of her name pulled her attention away from the papers and towards the trainee. "You dropped this," she said, autonomously pulling the letter the rest of the way from the envelope to hold it up in indication. She then gestured to the rest of the fallen paper, "Well, all of this, really. I figured I would save you the trouble of picking it up, but I didn't even know we got mail. Though the date on this is awfully old for it being so urgent..." She tilted her head at the letter in her hand curiously.

"We don't. Or...I don't know, maybe we could," Elle bit her lip, a nervous habit. "Ah, uh....I already sort of thought I had taken care of that, actually...but...well, it's really nothing you have to worry about." Elle was starting to panic. If Arcadie read that letter, then she'd know Elle was in trouble.

Elle told herself to calm down. It would be okay. She just had to talk her way out of this. A mask of calm slid over her face, hiding the terror she felt. She smiled demurely at Arcadie, and reached out her hand for the mail. "Thank you for picking that up for me. I hadn't even realized I had knocked over all that paper. I was just in such a hurry to take a shower--I must've missed the hamper with my epic uniform toss! I'll just take that back now..."

"Hmmmmm." She listened to her roommate's explanation, noting the hurriedness of her speech and her eagerness to retrieve the letter from Arcadie's hands. There was something to it, that letter. Rather than return the paper to Elle's reaching hand, Arcadie instead fluidly stood and spun on her heel, bringing the envelope and its contents further from the other trainee's reach. She did, however, continue to refrain from outright reading it. "If you'd taken care of it, you would have thrown it out, right?" she said with a glance over her shoulder. "I'm pretty good with things that are urgent, you know. Comes with training for hospital work." An indication, attempting to be more subtle than it actually was, that Arcadie wouldn't return the letter unless she heard more of this matter that apparently wasn't so taken care of after all.

And then Elle was annoyed. It was her paper, not Arcadie's. It wasn't her business--but...Elle sighed. She supposed that technically this concerned Arcadie too--and everybody else at this stupid base. But that didn't mean that she wanted Arcadie to know about it.

Elle frowned at Arcadie. "I don't think you can help with this one. It's my own fault, and I'll get myself out of it." She shrugged. "And besides, it should be taken care of....I just don't know why it hasn't been yet is all..."

"I could be helpful!" she replied with a smile, hugging the paper to her chest as if it were something precious. "But we wouldn't know that until I know what's up, non? If it's a secret, you don't have to worry. I'm stellar with secrets." She inclined her head to a side, her expression inviting and entreating. "Two heads are better than one, as they say." Incorrigibly nosy girl.

Damn. She really wouldn't let this go.

Elle sighed again. "Okay, fine. Read it." Arcadie would see the debt, know that she owed a ridiculous amount of money...but she wouldn't know why or what had happened to that money, and Elle was going to keep it that way.

One thing was clear: Elle wasn't going to be able to pay it back. Which meant only one thing. Collectors.

A momentary brightness flashed in Arcadie's smile, like that of a child who had bothered her mother for a cookie so incessantly that she was forced to cede, and a more composed visage settled into her features as eyes turned downwards to the letter in her hands. That expression shifted slightly with concern as comprehension settled in. "Ahh, this is..." That was a scary-looking letter. "Something like college loans?" she said with a laugh - a vague attempt at lightening the mood. "And you say this should have been cleared up already...?" The fact that it wasn't likely meant that there were people looking for her. That didn't really bode well; if they got hold of her, it would jeopardize the team as a whole, wouldn't it...?

College loans. Sure, let her think that's what it was. And sure, the astronomical $100,000 could have been used for college. But Elle had never been to college. She was supposed to have gone, once... She would have much rather accrued the debt that way.

"Yes, but...my cli--uh, my friend never sent the check. I got a phone call on the ship over. Naturally, I dumped the phone. Thank god for caller ID." Elle frowned again, tugging at the corner of her towel. "And now I'm just not sure why the check wasn't sent, but it doesn't look good."

"Ooooohh, so what, they just stole the check for themselves or something?" She frowned disapprovingly at the idea. "That's no good. Who is this friend? Not a very good friend. Do you think you could contact them?" It couldn't be but so hard to track them down, right? Especially with the power of Team Rocket behind them - not that Arcadie knew much about the organization's tracking abilities or if those abilities could even be used by some random trainee. Probably not, but it was at least worth looking into for some idea of a direction.

"It was his money, so it's more like he just decided he didn't want to help me out." Elle sighed. He was her best client too. "As for contacting him...I don't know how. He always called me--restricted number."

He had promised her he'd take care of everything. He'd said that he wouldn't let his little flower go without anything. And then when the collectors had shown up, he'd said it must be a mistake somehow. That Elle should go lay low for a while while he sorted it out. He had heard rumors of a place in Kodo that would take her in.

So she left. But then she had gotten the phone call on the ship over.

"I think he lied to me when he said he'd pay for me. I think he just wanted me gone..." His wife was getting suspicious, so maybe that was it. Still, there were better ways to say "get lost" than damning someone to a life of crime and then siccing the collectors on them.

"Hm." Arcadie listened, and when Elle had finished speaking, she looked back to the paper in her hands, her expression largely blank as she read and considered and reread. Eventually her shoulders raised slightly, a vague mixture of indignation and resolution emerging in her features. She crumpled the letter suddenly and turned back to Elle, pointing at her energetically with the hand that held the balled up sheet of paper.

"This is a very scary place!" she declared cheerily. "And there are some very scary people here! Much scarier than a little bit of debt, oui? And the good news is that all this scariness," she gestured broadly to the room, "is on your side."

Elle grinned wickedly. Arcadie was right. For months, Elle had been living here but hadn't claimed this place as hers. Her new life at a criminal organization. It wasn't something she had wanted. But now...well, she was starting to like it here. Scariness and all.

Elle reached for the letter again, pulling it gently out of her roommate's hands. "You're absolutely right," she said, running a finger over the letter. "Looks like I get to be a real criminal after all," she said mischievously, ripping the letter into pieces and dropping the shredded remains in the wastebasket.

"Whoever thinks about coming after me is in for a real surprise," she said, chuckling darkly.
