Calder had never been to the reaper dorms. In fact, he didn't think he actually spoke to many reapers. His friends were mainly undeads and demons. It was interesting for him to find out Roch's groanspring and mention of music, and strike up a conversation. It also meant he could find out more about OTHER music. As far as his culture was concerns, bagpipes were classic, second to woodwinds.

Curious to the building and a tad excited, Calder went to the given dorm room number offered to him via the Web, and checked himself once over before knocking.

The doorknob turned and the door opened slowly, a little will o the wisp fairy peeking at him curiously. With the door opened the gentle sound of music reached the visitor, a lazy, laid back song that was rather inviting.

"Who is it, screech?" Roch called from inside as the door opened wider. The little fairy flitted away, heading for the teenager sitting on the wrought iron papasan bed in the middle of the room. "Oh, hey, c'mon in," he said with a grin as he caught sight of Calder.

His eyes glanced down at the small fairy and gave a unsure wave as it looked up at him. "Hello?" Was this the right room? He wasn't sure. Figuring out room numbers were always confusing concepts for him. He didn't exactly know Roch's scent either.

When the door opened, he stepped in and looked around the room before spotting the boil sitting on the bed. Reapers were startling for him nowadays. What with the ongoing war with the Hunters, but he knew Roch from the pictures on his profile and breathed out. "Roch, right?"

He stepped in, slowly shutting the door behind him. "You said you knew a thing or two about music?" He glanced around, before slowly moving to the boil. "I'm Calder."

"Yeah, I know," Roch said. "I was in that room with you when you were tryin' to break Barth free from the hunters," he said quietly. "You were a bit busy with other things at the time, so I don't blame you for forgetting or anything."

He had his guitar in his hands, but he had stopped playing it. "But hell, now isn't the time to talk about that! What are you after learning? Playing the guitar? Singing?" He stood, giving the kelpie an easy grin. "I got a soundproof booth over there, with a scareoke machine in it, so you can sing anything you want!"

Calder rubbed his shoulder, looking around the room again and ever curious about the many objects he didn't know, before his green eyes settled back on the boil. "I really don't know much about other music. I heard a lot at the dances there have been, but I don't know them. They are....very different to the ones back home. I don't ...is that guitar?" He pointed at the thing that Roch was holding. "....it looks a little weird to play, and...I'd be okay with singing, but if a scareoke is another instrument like that, I don't think I could play it either." To which he pointed to the guitar again.

"I really am interested in knowing the songs everyone else knows around here." He wanted to be 'in' with everyone else. To be exposed and knowledgeable in all things other boils an ghouls knew and not feel out of the group if the subject of music ever came up.

"Nah, c'mon," Roch said, standing and heading for the booth in the corner. He opened the door and flipped on the lights, revealing a small room with a black couch and a stage to the side. There was a mic on a stand on the stage and a machine next to it, as well as a screen mounted to the wall.

He headed for the stage, grabbing a gigantic folder off of a small shelf and putting it on the stand next to the mic. Motioning Calder over he started flipping through the book. "I got a TON of songs programmed into this," he explained. "We can pick one that'll suit your voice, it's got the words on this screen over here, see? You just sing along with that."

The sound booth was a weird, little room, and he was once again reminded how much bigger some of the other dorm rooms were. Walking inside, he looked at the floor, then wide screen, and the little box thingie that was apparently the scareoke.

Moving over, he knelt over to examine it and glance back up at the screen. "So it's like one of those TV things but with words?" He fiddled with his jacket as he stood up straight. "I don't know any songs....and my voice?" He gently touched his neck. "I don't know what songs would be good for it. How do we even figure that out?" He was a little worried that none of the songs would be good for him. He loved making music and being loud, but he worried about sounding badly and somehow failing.

"What kind of songs do you have?"

"Hmm, okay, let's start with scales first," Roch said at the confusion. He thought for a second, then brought his hands to his guitar and played a short series of notes. Then he played the first note. "Sing this," he said as the note lingered on the air.

Scales? What scales? He looked around and then at his skin. Dragon scales? He wasn't like that. You didn't sing scales. Did you sing ABOUT scales? Was that what was popular now?

Looking very confused, Roch tried to help by strumming his guitar. It was very pretty, but when the reaper told him to SING it, he was even more confused. "Um...Okay. If you say so." He cleared his throat, stood straight, and then sang. "Strummmmm." He hummed, trying to imitate the sound. "Was that good?"

"Y'don't gotta say strum, just try to make the same sound as the guitar," Roch said, looking amused. "Let's try it again," he said, playing the note one more time. He was almost certain, though... that the guy was tone deaf.

Not positive, no, but it WOULD explain the bagpipes...

(Roch, why so judgmental about music?? Jerk.))

Calder was still confused. How did you SOUND like a guitar without sounding like the guitar? It went 'strum', so didn't that mean he made that noise too. Wondering if he was going to look even more crazy, he nodded slowly without fully understanding, and produced a simple. "Ahhh." To be the best of his ability. While he could sing Scottish ballads with easy and did quite well with the songs he knew, this sort of practice he had never done and matching an exact sound was strange to him. This sorta of music was so DEMANDING!

"Good," Roch said. "Are there any songs you DO know?" he asked, foreseeing a very long day of playing notes and listening if he didn't. "Something from your homeland? I bet I could find at least one on the scareoke machine! You could sing it for me!"

He headed for the book, flipping it open. "Got any titles in mind?"

"Really?" Calder didn't know he had songs he knew, and moved close to the boil, smiling. "Do you have The Dark Island, or Scottish Rivers? Oh, how about Mist Covered Mountains?" He wanted to see if he had any he knew at all.

"What songs do ..you like? You have a lot. Do you know all these songs?" If he had a big machine and a room for it, he must know LOTS of songs.
PostPosted: Sun Jan 29, 2012 10:49 am

"Heck no," Roch said cheerfully. "The machine came super equipped, it's pretty awesome! Sometimes I just open it to something random and try it out! But lessee," he said, flipping through the book.

"Mist Covered Mountains, got it right here," he said. "See this number, you type it in on this pad here," which he did, "and here's the mic," he said, handing it over. "You can see the lyrics right there, see?" Then he moved out of the way to let Calder sing.

The music was already starting and Calder was left with the mic in his hand and panicking. "What? Wait! Now?!" He looked at Roch as the boil stepped aside, the screen, the mike, Roch again and then noticed that words were already coming up on the screen. Heart racing, he tried to catch up, put on the spot to sing then and there. He at least thought there would be a warning first.

"Oh ro soon shall I see them;
Oh he ro see them oh see them.
Oh ro soon shall I see them the
mist covered mountains of home.

There shall I visit the place of my birth
And they'll give me a welcome the warmest on earth
All so loving and kind full of music and mirth,
In the sweet sounding language of home.
"

His voice went to the rather clear, English dialect he typically used around school to a thick, Scottish accent that cut vows, lengthened syllables, and turned sounds. Soon he wasn't looking so much as the lyrics, he knew them by heart, as he was looking as the screen that showed various mountains and he felt a terrible pang in his chest.

He was feeling dreadfully homesick.

"Oh ro soon shall I see them;
Oh he ro see them oh see them.
Oh ro soon shall I see them the
mist covered mountains of home.

There shall I gaze on the mountains again,
On the fields and the woods and the burns and the glens,
Away 'mong the corries beyond human ken
In the haunts of the holideer I will roam."

While it wasn't the voice of a angel or a seductive siren, it was at least a song he knew and practiced and sang without faltering. He finished one more chorus before ending the song.

"Hail to the mountains with summits of blue,
To the glens with their meadows of sunshine and dew.
To the women and men ever constant and true,
Ever ready to welcome one home.
"

The song ended, and Calder watched it turn to a wait screen before his ears went down. He smiled at Roch. "It's...it's very nice you had this song." He wished there was a band around him instead, and dancing, but it was at least nice to hear a song of home.

Oh, he was going to get all misty! "But...But I want to learn some new songs. What songs do you like? Can you show me one?"
