User ImageAfter the debacle with Siscalus knocking over the Lady's china, and having to trek all the way to Palisade to retrieve it -- no horse for him to use -- it was time for a well-deserved rest. The way back had been hard, and though he was relatively certain Siscalus could have carried the china back in saddlebags, Siscalus, being a master of the sideways glance, had killed that idea before it had even started. Imagining the yearling with saddlebags bulging to either side of his flanks was ridiculous. It would have ruined his delicate gait, not to mention make him look like a pack-horse, something he most assuredly was not.

So Ayle had come home with the china carefully packaged up in a box; Juhua had been more than accommodating with making sure nothing would slip around and break inside of the package. The Lady had been pleased with the replacements, though she still had not quite finished giving him the evil eye whenever he ventured too far into the kitchen. Even Siscalus was shooed out with head drooping and ears flat against his head.

A week later he found himself back in Palisade again: this time because he wanted to be there. He'd earned a little extra money by, of all things, delivering a foal. The mother was one of the prized horses, and the delivery had been a delicate procedure, but somehow Siscalus had calmed the dam enough to allow the foal to be born. He was whistling as he strolled down the bright, sunlit streets of Palisade, his bootheels clicking on the worn flagstones, and Siscalus gamboling (a rare display of such emotion) behind him.

If you had asked Lytka a few years ago if she thought she would someday be riding through the streets of Palisade on a deer the size of a horse, she would have probably burst into hysterical laughter and called you crazy. But here she was, at fifteen, straddling the back of a blue-eyed buck as he trotted down the cobbled street. She got stares -- but she was used to those. Being a blonde-haired gypsy was unusual enough...riding atop a strangely pattered deer only made the stares follow her a little farther.

Still, Lytka was less comfortable in the city than she could ever be out on the road with the caravans of her people. Palialas, however, seemed to have taken it upon himself to find all the other damn guardians Sunderland. He had a sort of sixth sense for finding them -- and was ridiculously adept at persuading his chosen to follow along on his searches. Why so many people would continue to live in the city when they had giant deer following their every move was beyond Lytka, but she trusted Pali's instincts. And although she would never admit it, she actually enjoyed meeting other chosen. She didn't know why any of them had been chosen, or for what -- Pali didn't seem to either -- but it was nice to feel like she was a part of something bigger than herself for once.

A sending from Palialas -- simple, a light tug on her consciousness -- brought Lytka's attention back to the street ahead of them where a darkly colored yearling was frolicking along behind a blonde man. "And here we go again," Lyt muttered to herself as her mount sped up to a trot and brought them alongside the deer and his chosen.

The click-click-click of hooves was something Ayle had learned to drown out: he had grown up among livestock, and then there was the delicate yearling behind him, its hooves lighter and softer but no less loud. When the girl on her deer swept up beside him, Ayle passed it off as merely another rider out on a pretty spring day in Palisade -- until something caught his eye and he glanced up, face rapidly showing a gamut of emotions: a blank carefree look, then surprise, and then something like disbelief or -- god help him -- even amusement. Maybe he was one of those types who was naturally given over to amusement: not having much by way of worldly possessions he sought it where he could. But maybe, just maybe, he was laughing at Lytka, or the deer, or--

Siscalus stopped him short by butting his head, complete with its sharp nubs of antlers, square into the small of his back, which provoked a grunt out of him. He'd likely have two small round bruises there for some time. He flicked a reproachful glance the yearling's way and was met by the studied innocence Siscalus was so good at.

Abashedly (though -- maybe not, that emotion seemed unfamiliar on such a rogueish face), he ran a hand through hair that was hot to the touch, bleached nearly white by the sun. "--I didn't know they'd get that big." His accent rounded out the vowels, making his voice twangy and thick with an uncommon accent. "When were you chosen?"

"Neither did I," Lytka snorted in response, tugging on one of Palialas' ears gently. "As if he wasn't big enough at that age," she remarked, nodding down to the yearling at the man's feet. Pali flicked his ear out of Lyt's grasp with a patient roll of his eyes.

"It's been about two years now," the gypsy girl continued, flinging a leg over the buck and sliding down his flank to the ground. Bells and trinkets jingled at her neck and waist as she landed, her colorful skirt swirling around her. Pali shook off and then bent his head down to the darkly colored yearling in greeting.

"I'm Lytka, and this is Palialas," the girl said, crossing her arms over her chest and leaning back against her guardian. "How long have you two been together?"
